Dinosaur locomotion and biomechanics, especially of their pelvic girdles and hindlimbs, have been analyzed in numerous studies. However, detailed volumetric musculoskeletal models of their tails are rarely developed. Here, we present the first detailed threedimensional volumetric reconstruction of the caudal epaxial and hypaxial musculature of the Late Jurassic sauropod Giraffatitan brancai, and highlight the importance and necessity of 3D modeling in musculoskeletal reconstructions. The tail of this basal macronarian is relatively short compared to diplodocids and other coexisting macronarians. The center of mass lies well in front of the hindlimbs, which support only ca. half the body weight. Still, our reconstruction suggests a total weight for the entire tail of ca. 2500 kg. We conclude that the hypaxial and tail-related hindlimb muscles (most specifically the M. caudofemoralis longus and its counterpart the M. ilioischiocaudalis) in Giraffatitan were well developed and robustly built, compensating for the shorter length of the M. caufodemoralis longus, the main hindlimb retractor muscle, in comparison with other sauropods. Our methodology allows a better-constrained reconstruction of muscle volumes and masses in extinct taxa, and thus force and weight distributions throughout the tail, than non-volumetric approaches. Biomechanical studies in sauropod dinosaurs are mainly focused on neck posture and feeding strategy. Few works investigate other aspects such as tail movement and function, especially in the clade Titanosauria, the most diverse within Neosauropoda. This study applied biomechanical concepts of neutral pose (cartilaginous neutral pose) and range of motion to verify the shape and direction of the caudal region of the advanced titanosaurs Adamantisaurus mezzalirai and Baurutitan britoi, in addition to comparing it with other titanosaurs (e.g., Arrudatitan maximus, Lirainosaurus astibiae, and Trigonosaurus pricei). As a result, the tails analyzed have a sigmoidal‐convex shape, probably close to the ground (but not touching it). The sigmoidal‐convex shape could increase the moment arm for the M. caudofemoralis longus, making it possible to use the tail as a fifth stabilizing member. This work expands our knowledge about sauropod dinosaurs by exposing a diversity of shapes for the tails of titanosaur sauropods and brings new possibilities for how these dinosaurs could use their tails. It can be arduous to discriminate between lamellar bone fibres, Sharpey's fibres (tendon insertions) and the pneumosteum (air sac diverticula interaction with the bone) during histological observations. We analysed thin sections of several avemetatarsalians from the Cretaceous of Brazil and used characters from optical mineralogy to differentiate these biomineralized tissue types, resulting in a solid criterion for histological comparison. The observation scale is one of the best guides to differentiate the tissues. Lamellar bone fibres are only perceptible at very high magnifications (100×) whereas Sharpey's fibres are detectable at low magnification (5×). Pneumosteal bone fibres are discernible at 40–50×. Hence, fibre length is longer in Sharpey's fibres than in the pneumosteum. High optical relief is a good proxy to detect connective tissue insertion scars (Sharpey's fibres). Finally, texture is an excellent proxy to identify pneumosteal bone. The asbestiform aspect of this structure is so far unique among several bone tissue types. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The first paleontological works on Mesozoic vertebrates from Portugal, carried out from the end of the 19th and the first half of the 20th century, provided the discovery of significant collections of vertebrate fossils. These collections are particularly relevant because they include several specimens collected from different regions of the Lusitanian Basin (some of the sites are currently inaccessible), whose fossil record is poorly known. Theropod remains are relatively scarce and generally consist of fragmentary material, mostly assigned to the megalosaurid Megalosaurus from the Middle Jurassic of England, the first dinosaur to be named and a “wastebasket” taxon used by many scientists to identify theropod material. The studied fossils mostly consist of isolated teeth and vertebrae collected from Upper Jurassic levels of the coastal region, with also some material from Lower and Upper Cretaceous strata from the central and northern sectors of the Lusitanian Basin. Here specimens attributed to Megalosaurus from different Portuguese institutions are reviewed and their taxonomic affinity and stratigraphic context are updated. Most specimens actually belong to different theropod groups, including several isolated teeth from different Upper Jurassic localities here assigned to Ceratosaurus, Torvosaurus, and Allosaurus, as well as an isolated tooth from the Lower Cretaceous that is attributed to an indeterminate allosauroid. Other theropod remains consist mostly of vertebral fragments of indeterminate avetheropods and allosauroids. Elements of other dinosaur groups are also represented, including a few vertebrae here referred to stegosaurians and iguanodontians, as well as a vertebra and some appendicular remains attributed to sauropods. Two vertebrae assigned to thalattosuchians were also identified. The study of this collection allows to better characterize the diversity of Late Jurassic dinosaur faunas from different areas of the Lusitanian Basin and provides some data on the poorly known Cretaceous fossil record of theropods from Portugal.

Sauropods were a successful group of herbivorous dinosaurs that colonised all continents throughout the Mesozoic. At first glance, the organisms in this group present a conservative shape of quadrupedal animals with elongated necks and tails. However, there was great diversification in the morphology of sauropods, which is still poorly understood in detail, especially during the Early Cretaceous. In this study, we describe a new ichnosite dated from the earliest stages of the Cretaceous of Brazil. The site includes a well-preserved trackway of a large sauropod dinosaur, with manus and pes prints, as well as tracks of theropods and indeterminate tetrapods. The sauropod trackway shows a unique set of characteristics that allowed the erection of a new ichnogenus and ichnospecies, Sousatitanosauripus robsoni igen. nov. et isp. nov. The basal macronarian sauropod Europasaurus holgeri is known only from the Late Jurassic of the Langenberg Quarry near Goslar, Lower Saxony, Germany. Europasaurus has been identified as an insular dwarf and shows a clear resemblance to Camarasaurus and Giraffatitan. This study provides a detailed description of the dentition of Europasaurus based on an array of fossils outstanding in their abundance, variety of preservation, and ontogenetic range. Dental morphology for the replacement and functional dentitions, the tooth replacement pattern, and implications for food intake are described for the Europasaurus dentition, which is characterized by broad-crowned teeth. Characteristic features for Europasaurus are the presence of denticles on replacement teeth, the wrinkled enamel, and large wear facets both on the apex and on the carinae of the tooth crowns. The partially articulated skull SNHM-2207-R and isolated tooth rows DfmMh/FV 580.1 and DfmMh/FV 896.7 suggest the presence of strong connective tissue partially covering the teeth. This connective tissue would have provided stability and protection for the teeth. Evidence for this connective tissue include exposed tooth necks, in-situ teeth with strongly resorbed roots which no longer would have been connected to the jaw bone, and wrinkled enamel and its surface pattern. The same features can be observed in other sauropod taxa as well. We therefore suggest that eusauropods in general possessed this connective tissue structure, which may be an autapomorphy of the group. Possibly, this hypothetical structure is homologous to the rhamphotheca in birds and some non-avian theropods, which, however rarely, show such a close integration of keratinous tissue and teeth that we hypothesize here. The cranial remains of the holotype of the Lower Cretaceous Bajada Colorada Formation (Neuquén, Argentina) Bajadasaurus pronuspinax and its associated 3D model are studied and compared herein. These materials comprise a complete braincase, skull roof and occiput, several periorbital elements, several palatal elements, a partially complete upper jaw and complete lower jaw, a partially complete functional dentition, and an indeterminate element. Three potential synapomorphies for the taxon, related to the temporomandibular articulation area, were recognised, two of them in the quadrate and one in the squamosal. Four potential synapomorphies for Dicraeosauridae were recognised, related to the braincase and the jaws, in the orbitosphenoids, prefrontals, maxillae and dentaries, and surangulars. The new information highlights the variability and similarities among Dicraeosauridae, allowing the reassessment of previously suggested skull configurations within the group, which are reinterpreted here a presenting stylised lower jaws, and suggests the presence of a cornified sheath on the rostral portions of the muzzle, such as the observed in other dinosaurian groups. The Barremian-aged Wessex Formation of the Isle of Wight, UK, offers a globally significant glimpse into the sauropod dinosaur faunas of the early Cretaceous. These deposits have yielded specimens of several neosauropod lineages, such as rebbachisaurids, titanosauriforms (including some of the earliest titanosaur remains), and possible flagellicaudatans. Here, we report an undescribed sauropod partial hindlimb from the Wessex Formation (NHMUK PV R16500) and analyse its phylogenetic affinities. This hindlimb preserves the left tibia, astragalus and pes, lacking only a few phalanges. NHMUK PV R16500 can be diagnosed based on two autapomorphies: an unusually high distal end to midshaft transverse width ratio in metatarsals III and IV, and the presence of small bump-like projections located in the centre of the proximal articular surfaces of the unguals of pedal digits I and II. The phylogenetic affinities of NHMUK PV R16500 are uncertain: although our analyses recover it as an early-branching somphospondylan, a single character change moves it to close to Flagellicaudata when extended implied weighting is applied. The possibility of flagellicaudatan affinities for NHMUK PV R16500 implies a potential ghost lineage that survived the Jurassic/Cretaceous boundary; however, we present evidence that the somphospondylan position is more probable and should be preferred.

Rebbachisauridae is a clade of sauropod dinosaurs whose maximum diversification and abundance are known from the Cretaceous of South America. We describe an anterior caudal vertebra, MDPA-Pv 007, from the Upper Cretaceous of Argentine Patagonia, whose characters allow it to be referred to this clade. Also, two phylogenetic analyses reinforce the referral of the new material more exclusively to Rebbachisaurinae. We analyze pneumatic structures using the first CT scans of a caudal element of a rebbachisaurid. The excellent preservation of MDPA-Pv 007, combined with CT images, allows us to document external fossae and foramina that connect to larger internal chambers, constituting unambiguous evidence of pneumaticity. The centrum of MDPA-Pv 007 is camerate, with large interconnected internal chambers; this is accompanied by a neural arch with wide and deep fossae. Caudal pneumaticity has a complex phylogenetic distribution among neosauropods. This feature may have evolved independently in diplodocoids and titanosauriforms, or it could be ancestral for Neosauropoda but secondarily lost in a few lineages. Future investigations, taking advantage of new technologies, will provide insights into the phylogenetic distribution and paleobiological implications of pneumaticity in sauropod dinosaurs and other fossil archosaurs.

Well-defined manus and pes print couple, likely from a trackway attributable to a sauropod dinosaur are revealed on a fallen block of Ravenscar Group sandstones in a cliff fall at Whitby, Yorkshire, England. The pes print displays four, possibly five toes and thus closely resembles that of the ichnogenera Brontopodus and Parabrontopodus. They are here referred to Brontopodus cf. pentadactylus Kim and Lockley, 2012. Impressions of a scaled integument are present around parts of the pes. The prints were likely made by a sauropod with a hip height of between 1.92 m and 2.83 m. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Skeletal remains of sauropod dinosaurs have been known from Australia for over 100 years. Unfortunately, the classification of the majority of these specimens to species level has historically been impeded by their incompleteness. This has begun to change in the last 15 years, primarily through the discovery and description of several partial skeletons from the Cenomanian-lower Turonian (lower Upper Cretaceous) Winton Formation in central Queensland, with four species erected to date: Australotitan cooperensis, Diamantinasaurus matildae, Savannasaurus elliottorum, and Wintonotitan wattsi. The first three of these appear to form a clade (Diamantinasauria) of early diverging titanosaurs (or close relatives of titanosaurs), whereas Wintonotitan wattsi is typically recovered as a distantly related non-titanosaurian somphospondylan. Through the use of 3D scanning, we digitised numerous specimens of Winton Formation sauropods, facilitating enhanced comparison between type and referred specimens, and heretofore undescribed specimens. We present new anatomical information on the holotype specimen of Diamantinasaurus matildae, and describe new remains pertaining to twelve sauropod individuals. Firsthand observations and digital analysis enabled previously proposed autapomorphic features of all four named Winton Formation sauropod species to be identified in the newly described specimens, with some specimens exhibiting putative autapomorphies of more than one species, prompting a reassessment of their taxonomic validity. Supported by a specimen-level phylogenetic analysis, we suggest that Australotitan cooperensis is probably a junior synonym of Diamantinasaurus matildae, but conservatively regard it herein as an indeterminate diamantinasaurian, meaning that the Winton Formation sauropod fauna now comprises three (rather than four) valid diamantinasaurian species: Diamantinasaurus matildae, Savannasaurus elliottorum, and Wintonotitan wattsi, with the latter robustly supported as a member of the clade for the first time. We refer some of the newly described specimens to these three species and provide revised diagnoses, with some previously proposed autapomorphies now regarded as diamantinasaurian synapomorphies. Our newly presented anatomical data and critical reappraisal of the Winton Formation sauropods facilitates a more comprehensive understanding of the mid-Cretaceous sauropod palaeobiota of central Queensland. Pneumatic dorsal ribs are known for many sauropods, but to date costal pneumaticity has received relatively little attention. In particular, the pneumatic ribs of the holotype specimen of Brachiosaurus altithorax have been largely overlooked, although they present a unique configuration of pneumatic features. One rib, with a pneumatic foramen some distance down the shaft, was briefly described and illustrated in the early 20th century by Elmer S. Riggs. A second rib with a pneumatic foramen in the tuberculum of the rib has not previously been described or illustrated. This previously undescribed foramen is similar in location to those in some dorsal ribs of Brontosaurus excelsus and Giraffatitan brancai, but differs from them in both size and shape. The contrasting sites of costal pneumaticity in the holotype individual of Brachiosaurus altithorax emphasize the generally opportunistic mode of postcranial pneumatization, in both sauropods and other ornithodirans, but conform to models of pneumatization following vascularization.

A new gigantic titanosaur Bustingorrytitan shiva gen. et sp. nov. is described. The four specimens upon which this species is erected come from Neuquén Province, Argentina, from levels of the Huincul Formation (Cenomanian). Bustingorrytitan shiva gen. et sp. nov. exhibits some autapomorphic characters such as posterior dorsal vertebrae with spinodiapophyseal laminae bifurcated in two, very well developed anterior and posterior spinodiapophyseal lamina rami, which limit a deep, vertical, socket-like fossa; posterior dorsal neural arches with forked centropostzygapophyseal laminae; hyposphene in anterior caudal vertebrae; humerus with deltopectoral crest strongly expanded distally; and femur with a low longitudinal crest on the lateromedial half of the anterior face, bifurcated in two minor crests, which are directed to their respective condyles. The phylogenetic analysis performed recovers B. shiva gen. et sp. nov. as a lithostrotian, the sister taxon of Saltasauridae. The estimated body mass is 67.297 metric tons (with a standard error of ±17.228), which makes B. shiva gen. et sp. nov. one of the largest sauropods ever recorded. The record of this new sauropod corroborates the idea that gigantism (evolution of forms over the 50 metric tons) would have evolved many times within Eutitanosauria.

A new mamenchisaurid sauropod dinosaur, Jingia dongxingensis gen. et sp. nov. from the Upper Jurassic of Southernmost China is reported here. The holotype consists of partly preserved dorsal, sacral, and caudal vertebrae, left and right ulna, and right femur. Anatomical comparison and phylogenetic analysis indicate that the new taxon belongs to Mamenchisauridae and bears a unique combination of characteristics, such as the ratio of the length of the neural spine to the narrowest width of the neural arch of the dorsal vertebra is about 4.4; sacral centrum is opisthocoelous with shallow depression exists on the lateral surface; centrum of anterior caudal vertebrae are amphicoelous, and the articular surfaces are transversely compressed; the anterolateral and anteromedial processes of the ulna are generally perpendicular in proximal view. Phylogenetically, Jingia dongxingensis gen. et sp. nov. is located at the later diverged position in Mamenchisauridae. This discovery increases the diversity of Mamenchisauridae and provides additional information to help understand the evolutionary radiation of eusauropods in China. Turiasauria is a clade of basal sauropod dinosaurs hitherto only known from the Middle Jurassic (Bathonian) to the Lower Cretaceous (Valanginian). A new find of a shed tooth crown from the Lower Jurassic (Pliensbachian), Halse Formation of Bornholm, Denmark, is spoon-like, asymmetrical, and heart-shaped, which identifies the tooth as turiasaurian, pushing the origin of the Turiasauria some 17 My back into the Lower Jurassic. This suggests a North Pangean/Laurasian origin of the turiasaurian clade, which then, during the Middle to Late Jurassic, dispersed through Europe, India, and Africa, with their latest representatives found in the Early Cretaceous of England and North America. The Upper Cretaceous fossil vertebrate fauna of the Bajo de la Carpa Formation (Santonian), derived from several different locations in the Neuquén Basin, is relatively abundant and diverse, comprising mainly small to medium-sized reptiles, birds and fishes. The Cerro Overo – La Invernada locality (CO – LI), in the north of the basin, records a similar faunal component for that age, but stands out for its relatively greater abundance and diversity of titanosaur sauropods. The study of the materials presented here allows us to establish the presence of specimens of sauropods other than Overosaurus, the only titanosaur recorded so far in the area, the coexistence of small–medium sized forms with larger forms, which in turn represent some forms with more basal characteristics and others with more derived features. The abundance of the record of sauropods in CO – LI shows both morphological and evolutionary variations, so the discovery of more complete specimens will allow paleofaunistic, paleobiological, and paleoecological studies to be carried out. This will provide a better understanding of the role of titanosaurian sauropods in Late Cretaceous ecosystems.

Tooth-marked bones provide important evidence for feeding choices made by extinct carnivorous animals. In the case of the dinosaurs, most bite traces are attributed to the large and robust osteophagous tyrannosaurs, but those of other large carnivores remain underreported. Here we report on an extensive survey of the literature and some fossil collections cataloging a large number of sauropod bones (68) from the Upper Jurassic Morrison Formation of the USA that bear bite traces that can be attributed to theropods. We find that such bites on large sauropods, although less common than in tyrannosaur-dominated faunas, are known in large numbers from the Morrison Formation, and that none of the observed traces showed evidence of healing. The presence of tooth wear in non-tyrannosaur theropods further shows that they were biting into bone, but it remains difficult to assign individual bite traces to theropod taxa in the presence of multiple credible candidate biters. Brachytrachelopan is a dicraeosaurid sauropod that comes from the Jurassic of Argentine Patagonia. With the purpose to infer different palaeobiological traits (e.g., ontogenetic stage, growth dynamics, temporal correlation between morphological and anatomical parameters of maturation), we perform an osteohistological study on different postcranial elements from the holotype individual, including axial (i.e., cervical hemispinous process, dorsal ribs) and appendicular (i.e., femur) bones. The absence of a distinct external fundamental system indicates that the individual died before full body size achievement (i.e., somatic maturity). Furthermore, although not conclusive, the histological data suggest that despite its body size, which is comparable with fully grown individuals of other dicraeosaurid taxa, the individual also corresponds to a sexually immature specimen. Predominance of highly vascularised fibrolamelar with only a cyclical growth mark (CGM) in the outer cortex of the femur reveals a sustained, accelerated growth, typical feature of neosauropod dinosaurs. The external anatomy (i.e., neurocentral sutures are visible in presacral vertebrae) is consistent with histological data, since both indicate some degree of immaturity. Dorsal ribs are best elements to estimate age. The new evidence reinforces the hypothesis that mechanical forces were higher in the anterior edge of cervical hemispinous processes, although, these findings do not support the presence of horn cores or interspinous ligament system in the neck of Brachytrachelopan. Pneumatic dorsal ribs are known for many sauropods, but to date costal pneumaticity has received relatively little attention. In particular, the pneumatic ribs of the holotype specimen of Brachiosaurus altithorax have been largely overlooked, although they present a unique configuration of pneumatic features. One rib, with a pneumatic foramen some distance down the shaft, was briefly described and illustrated in the early 20th century by Elmer S. Riggs. A second rib with a pneumatic foramen in the tuberculum of the rib has not previously been described or illustrated. This previously undescribed foramen is similar in location to those in some dorsal ribs of Brontosaurus excelsus and Giraffatitan brancai, but differs from them in both size and shape. The contrasting sites of costal pneumaticity in the holotype individual of Brachiosaurus altithorax emphasize the generally opportunistic mode of postcranial pneumatization, in both sauropods and other ornithodirans, but conform to models of pneumatization following vascularization. A new gigantic titanosaur Bustingorrytitan shiva gen. et sp. nov. is described. The four specimens upon which this species is erected come from Neuquén Province, Argentina, from levels of the Huincul Formation (Cenomanian). Bustingorrytitan shiva gen. et sp. nov. exhibits some autapomorphic characters such as posterior dorsal vertebrae with spinodiapophyseal laminae bifurcated in two, very well developed anterior and posterior spinodiapophyseal lamina rami, which limit a deep, vertical, socket-like fossa; posterior dorsal neural arches with forked centropostzygapophyseal laminae; hyposphene in anterior caudal vertebrae; humerus with deltopectoral crest strongly expanded distally; and femur with a low longitudinal crest on the lateromedial half of the anterior face, bifurcated in two minor crests, which are directed to their respective condyles. The phylogenetic analysis performed recovers B. shiva gen. et sp. nov. as a lithostrotian, the sister taxon of Saltasauridae. The estimated body mass is 67.297 metric tons (with a standard error of ±17.228), which makes B. shiva gen. et sp. nov. one of the largest sauropods ever recorded. The authorship of the sauropod dinosaur genus Astrodon is frequently cited as Johnston, 1859, and its type species Astrodon johnstoni is usually cited as Leidy, 1865. Although Johnston's publication does satisfy the Code's requirements for published work, the lack of description means it does not satisfy the criteria of availability in Article 12 for names published before 1931. Astrodon was a nomen nudum until it was made available by Leidy in his subsequent description of the nominal genus with its single new nominal species. Tooth-marked bones provide important evidence for feeding choices made by extinct carnivorous animals. In the case of the dinosaurs, most bite traces are attributed to the large and robust osteophagous tyrannosaurs, but those of other large carnivores remain underreported. Here we report on an extensive survey of the literature and some fossil collections cataloging a large number of sauropod bones (68) from the Upper Jurassic Morrison Formation of the USA that bear bite traces that can be attributed to theropods. We find that such bites on large sauropods, although less common than in tyrannosaur-dominated faunas, are known in large numbers from the Morrison Formation, and that none of the observed traces showed evidence of healing. Jurassic strata are widely distributed in the eastern part of Tibet Autonomous Region, and have yielded many dinosaur bones. However, none of these specimens has been studied extensively, and some remain unprepared. Here we provide a detailed description of some new sauropod material, including several cervical vertebrae and a nearly complete scapula, recovered from the Middle Jurassic of Chaya County, East Tibet. The cervical vertebrae have short centra that bear ventral midline keels, as in many non-neosauropod sauropods such as Shunosaurus. Moreover, the cervical centra display deep lateral excavations, partitioned by a septum. The scapula has proximal and distal ends that are both expanded as in mamenchisaurids and neosauropods. However, relatively small body size and lack of fusion of neurocentral sutures in the cervical vertebrae suggest that the available material is from a juvenile, and the length of the cervical centra may have increased relative to the size of the rest of the skeleton in later ontogenetic stages. Phylogenetic analysis provides limited evidence that the new Tibetan sauropod specimen belongs to Eusauropoda, being more derived than Shunosaurus, but is basal to Mamenchisauridae. The new material provides important information on the morphological transition between Shunosaurus and mamenchisaurids, and extends the known biogeographic range of early-diverging sauropods in the Middle Jurassic of East Asia. Turiasauria is a clade of basal sauropod dinosaurs hitherto only known from the Middle Jurassic (Bathonian) to the Lower Cretaceous (Valanginian). A new find of a shed tooth crown from the Lower Jurassic (Pliensbachian), Halse Formation of Bornholm, Denmark, is spoon-like, asymmetrical, and heart-shaped, which identifies the tooth as turiasaurian, pushing the origin of the Turiasauria some 17 My back into the Lower Jurassic. This suggests a North Pangean/Laurasian origin of the turiasaurian clade, which then, during the Middle to Late Jurassic, dispersed through Europe, India, and Africa, with their latest representatives found in the Early Cretaceous of England and North America. Furthermore, this is the first record of a sauropod from the Pliensbachian in Europe.

Titanosaurian sauropod dinosaurs were diverse and abundant throughout the Cretaceous, with a global distribution. However, few titanosaurian taxa are represented by multiple skeletons, let alone skulls. Diamantinasaurus matildae, from the lower Upper Cretaceous Winton Formation of Queensland, Australia, was heretofore represented by three specimens, including one that preserves a braincase and several other cranial elements. Herein, we describe a fourth specimen of Diamantinasaurus matildae that preserves a more complete skull—including numerous cranial elements not previously known for this taxon—as well as a partial postcranial skeleton. The skull of Diamantinasaurus matildae shows many similarities to that of the coeval Sarmientosaurus musacchioi from Argentina (e.g. quadratojugal with posterior tongue-like process; braincase with more than one ossified exit for cranial nerve V; compressed-cone–chisel-like teeth), providing further support for the inclusion of both taxa within the clade Diamantinasauria. The replacement teeth within the premaxilla of the new specimen are morphologically congruent with teeth previously attributed to Diamantinasaurus matildae, and Diamantinasauria more broadly, corroborating those referrals. Plesiomorphic characters of the new specimen include a sacrum comprising five vertebrae (also newly demonstrated in the holotype of Diamantinasaurus matildae), rather than the six or more that typify other titanosaurs. However, we demonstrate that there have been a number of independent acquisitions of a six-vertebrae sacrum among Somphospondyli and/or that there have been numerous reversals to a five-vertebrae sacrum, suggesting that sacral count is relatively plastic. Other newly identified plesiomorphic features include: the overall skull shape, which is more similar to brachiosaurids than ‘derived' titanosaurs; anterior caudal centra that are amphicoelous, rather than procoelous; and a pedal phalangeal formula estimated as 2-2-3-2-0. These features are consistent with either an early-branching position within Titanosauria, or a position just outside the titanosaurian radiation, for Diamantinasauria, as indicated by alternative character weighting approaches applied in our phylogenetic analyses, and help to shed light on the early assembly of titanosaurian anatomy that has until now been obscured by a poor fossil record.

The osteology of Pilmatueia faundezi Coria, Windholz, Ortega & Currie, 2019, a dicraeosaurid sauropod from the Lower Cretaceous of Patagonia, is reassessed from the perspective of a new specimen (MLL-Pv-010) that provides additional information on the axial skeleton and the pectoral girdle. The specimen MLL-Pv-010 is composed of three articulated anterior-middle cervical vertebrae (with their respective ribs in position and an associated fourth rib), seven dorsal vertebrae with associated dorsal ribs, a distal caudal vertebra, a left scapula and the proximal end of a right scapula. The new specimen shows features, especially in the middle cervical vertebrae, that link it to Pilmatueia faundezi. Additionally, the specimen MLL-Pv-010 shows features previously unknown for the species, such as the morphology and orientation of the bifid neural spines of the anterior and mid-cervical vertebrae. The information obtained from the specimen MLL-Pv-010 allows us to propose an expanded diagnosis of Pilmatueia faundezi. Moreover, two phylogenetic analyses focusing on South American dicraeosaurids show that Pilmatueia Coria, Windholz, Ortega & Currie, 2019 is well nested within Dicraeosauridae Huene, 1927. One of our phylogenetic hypotheses differs from previous contributions in showing South American dicraeosaurids as a monophyletic group. However, in the second hypothesis these are not recovered as a natural group. We think that it is reasonable to recover a South American dicraeosaurid clade, and that eventually it will be best supported once more evidence is recovered. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Middle Jurassic lower Shaximiao Formation in Sichuan Province of south-western China has yielded a diverse terrestrial vertebrate fauna dominated by sauropod dinosaurs. However, many of these sauropods lack detailed descriptions or explicit phylogenetic diagnoses. Here, we present a comprehensive redescription of Dashanpusaurus dongi, a species of sauropod found only in the lower Shaximiao Formation. We define the revised autapomorphies of the species as follows: neural canals are sub-square in anterior dorsal vertebrae; the presence of a thin accessory lamina that contacts the prezygodiapophyseal and paradiapophyseal laminae of the middle dorsals, forming an angle of 75° to the horizontal; and four ridges on the anterodistal edge of the humerus. Often considered part of the epipophyseal-prezygapophyseal lamina, a strut invades the spinodiapophyseal fossa in the cervical and anterior dorsal vertebrae. Anatomical comparisons indicate that this feature was widespread among early-diverging Middle Jurassic eusauropod lineages. This comparative anatomical data provides an opportunity to revisit the phylogenetic position of Dashanpusaurus and the relationships of the neosauropod clade. Recovered as a macronarian, a better understanding of Dashanpusaurus dongi will allow for clarification of the origin, early evolution, and palaeogeographical distribution of neosauropods. Ichnofossils are a useful tool in determining some aspects of the palaeoecology from past ecosystems, being often used as evidence of interactions between extinct organisms. In this paper we describe tooth traces found in UFRJ-DG 705 R, a fragmentary sauropod epiphysis, from the Presidente Prudente Formation, Bauru Group. We infer that these traces were made by a small to medium-sized crocodyliform, most likely an itasuchid, in a possible act of necrophagy. This new record of tooth traces in the Bauru Group showcases important evidence concerning trophic relations between sauropods and crocodyliforms in this locality during the Late Cretaceous. The previously unknown second cervical vertebra (axis) of the sauropod Sibirotitan astrosacralis Averianov et al., 2018 from the Early Cretaceous locality Shestakovo 1 (Ilek Formation, Aptian) in Kemerovo oblast, Russia, makes it possible to supplement the morphological characterization of this dinosaur species. The described axis is characterized by unique features such as a flat and rectangular ventral surface of the vertebral centrum and dorsally ascending spinopostzygapophyseal laminae. A unique common feature of the axis and other cervical vertebrae of Sibirotitan is the presence of large and deep centropostzygapophyseal fossae on the posterior surface of the neural arch between the neural canal and the postzygapophyses. The Barremian-aged Wessex Formation of the Isle of Wight, UK, offers a globally significant glimpse into the sauropod dinosaur faunas of the early Cretaceous. These deposits have yielded specimens of several neosauropod lineages, such as rebbachisaurids, titanosauriforms (including some of the earliest titanosaur remains), and possible flagellicaudatans. Here, we report an undescribed sauropod partial hindlimb from the Wessex Formation (NHMUK PV R16500) and analyse its phylogenetic affinities. This hindlimb preserves the left tibia, astragalus and pes, lacking only a few phalanges. NHMUK PV R16500 can be diagnosed based on two autapomorphies: an unusually high distal end to midshaft transverse width ratio in metatarsals III and IV, and the presence of small bump-like projections located in the centre of the proximal articular surfaces of the unguals of pedal digits I and II. The phylogenetic affinities of NHMUK PV R16500 are uncertain: although our analyses recover it as an early-branching somphospondylan, a single character change moves it to close to Flagellicaudata when extended implied weighting is applied. The possibility of flagellicaudatan affinities for NHMUK PV R16500 implies a potential ghost lineage that survived the Jurassic/Cretaceous boundary; however, we present evidence that the somphospondylan position is more probable and should be preferred., Competing Interests: We declare we have no competing interests., (© 2024 The Authors.)

Macronaria is a clade of gigantic body-sized sauropod dinosaurs widely distributed from the Late Jurassic to the Late Cretaceous globally. However, its origin, early diversification, and dispersal are still controversial. Here, we report a new macronarian Yuzhoulong qurenensis gen. et sp. nov. excavated from the Middle Jurassic (Bathonian) Lower Shaximiao Formation. Yuzhoulong qurenensis bears a unique combination of features, such as two accessory fossae that exist on the posterior surface of dorsal diapophyses of anterior dorsal vertebrae. Results of phylogenetic analyses demonstrate it is one of the earliest-diverging macronarians. This new material represents a Middle Jurassic fossil record of macronarian sauropod worldwide and improves the understanding of the early diversity and dispersal of the Neosauropoda. This discovery further supports that sauropods achieved a more rapid and varied morphological diversity and palaeogeographical dispersal in the Middle Jurassic.

Dicraeosaurid sauropods are iconically characterized by the presence of elongate hemispinous processes in presacral vertebrae. These hemispinous processes can show an extreme degree of elongation, such as in the Argentinean forms Amargasaurus cazaui, Pilmatueia faundezi and Bajadasaurus pronuspinax. These hyperelongated hemispinous processes have been variably interpreted as a support structure for a padded crest/sail as a display, a bison‐like hump or as the internal osseous cores of cervical horns. With the purpose to test these hypotheses, here we analyze, for the first time, the external morphology, internal microanatomy and bone microstructure of the hemispinous processes from the holotype of Amargasaurus, in addition to a second dicraeosaurid indet. (also from the La Amarga Formatin; Lower Cretaceous, Argentina). Transverse thin‐sections sampled from the proximal, mid and distal portions of both cervical and dorsal hemispinous processes reveal that the cortical bone is formed by highly vascularized fibrolamellar bone interrupted with cyclical growth marks. Obliquely oriented Sharpey's fibres are mostly located in the medial and lateral portions of the cortex. Secondary remodelling is evidenced by the presence of abundant secondary osteons irregularly distributed within the cortex. Both anatomical and histological evidence does not support the presence of a keratinized sheath (i.e. horn) covering the hyperelongated hemispinous processes of Amargasaurus, and either, using a parsimonious criterium, in other dicraeosaurids with similar vertebral morphology. The spatial distribution and relative orientation of the Sharpey's fibres suggest the presence of an important system of interspinous ligaments that possibly connect successive hemispinous processes in Amargasaurus. These ligaments were distributed along the entirety of the hemispinous processes. The differential distribution of secondary osteons indicates that the cervical hemispinous processes of Amargasaurus were subjected to mechanical forces that generated higher compression strain on the anterior side of the elements. The late Campanian-Maastrichtian in the Ibero-Armorican domain is rich in titanosaurian fossils. The sauropod remains exhibit a high degree of morphological variability, especially in the commonly-found appendicular elements. The phylogenetic relationships of the Ibero-Armorican titanosaurs are still uncertain but we do know that they experienced a Campanian-Maastrichtian herbivorous faunal turnover. It is probable that the small-to-medium-sized Lirainosaurinae-dominated faunas of the Campanian were replaced by late–early Maastrichtian large-bodied lithostrotian dominated faunas. In this context, the Villalba de La Sierra Formation has yielded an abundant sample of medium-to-large sized titanosaurs. In this study we analyze the morphological variability in the appendicular skeleton of the titanosaurs from the Campanian-Maastrichtian Ibero-Armorican domain. We follow previous attempts to classify the commonly-found isolated titanosaurian femora and expand the proposed methodology. The use of combined phenotypic characters and linear morphometrics can be helpful to analyze the morphological variability and diversity of the Ibero-Armorican titanosaurs. Our findings corroborate the presence of at least two exclusive morphotypes in the Lo Hueco fossil site and one exclusive morphotype in the Poyos site, as well as the presence of previously defined Lirainosaurinae across the Pyrenees during the Campanian-Maastrichtian. The Villalba de La Sierra Formation titanosaurs are also clustered with large-bodied late Maastrichtian titanosaurs. It is possible that either the large-bodied late–early Maastrichtian immigrants, with possible Gondwanan affinities, entered the Iberian Peninsula much earlier or that this group was already present at least during the Campanian-Maastrichtian transition, as the small-sized Lirainosaurinae declined. The Upper Cretaceous Winton Formation of Queensland, Australia, has produced several partial sauropod skeletons, but cranial remains—including teeth—remain rare. Herein, we present the first description of sauropod teeth from this formation, based on specimens from three separate sites. An isolated tooth and a dentary fragment from the Diamantinasaurus matildae type locality are considered to be referable to that titanosaurian taxon. A single tooth from the D. matildae referred specimen site is similarly regarded as being part of that individual. Seventeen teeth from a new site that are morphologically uniform, and similar to the teeth from the two Diamantinasaurus sites, are assigned to Diamantinasauria. All sauropod teeth recovered from the Winton Formation to date are compressed-cone-chisel-shaped, have low slenderness index values (2.00–2.88), are lingually curved at their apices, mesiodistally convex on their lingual surfaces, and lack prominent carinae and denticles. They are markedly different from the chisel-like teeth of derived titanosaurs, more closely resembling the teeth of early branching members of the titanosauriform radiation. This provides further support for a ‘basal’ titanosaurian position for Diamantinasauria. Scanning electron microscope microwear analysis of the wear facets of several teeth reveals more scratches than pits, implying that diamantinasaurians were mid-height (1–10 m) feeders. With a view to assessing the spatio-temporal distribution of sauropod tooth morphotypes before and after deposition of the Winton Formation, we provide a comprehensive continent-by-continent review of the early titanosauriform global record (Early to early Late Cretaceous). This indicates that throughout the Early–early Late Cretaceous, sauropod faunas transitioned from being quite diverse at higher phylogenetic levels and encompassing a range of tooth morphologies at the start of the Berriasian, to faunas comprising solely titanosaurs with limited dental variability by the end-Turonian. Furthermore, this review highlights the different ways in which this transition unfolded on each continent, including the earliest records of titanosaurs with narrow-crowned teeth on each continent.

Following the Late Jurassic, megaherbivore communities in North America undergo a dramatic turnover in faunal composition: sauropods decline to the point of becoming relatively minor components of ecosystems, stegosaurs become extinct, and hadrosaurids, ceratopsids and ankylosaurs rise in diversity and abundance. Although a variety of causes have been proposed to account for the dramatic decrease in sauropod diversity following the Late Jurassic and could have also been applicable to the disappearance of stegosaurs, the potential for competitive replacement of sauropods by hadrosauroids as an explanation has been previously dismissed due to morphological differences without further investigation. Using twelve ecomorphological correlates of the skull, this study provides a preliminary investigation into ecomorphospace occupation of major megaherbivore clades from the Late Jurassic through to the Late Cretaceous of North America and assess if morphological differences were enough to have potentially facilitated dietary niche partitioning between sauropods and iguanodontians and stegosaurs and ankylosaurs. Overlap in reconstructed ecomorphospace was observed between sauropods (particularly non-diplodocid sauropods) and iguanodontians, as would be expected if morphological differences were not enough to facilitate niche partitioning, contrary to original claims used to dismiss the competitive replacement hypothesis. Overlap was also observed between stegosaurs and ankylosaurs, particularly between Late Cretaceous ankylosaurs. Whether this overlap is reflective competitive replacement or opportunistic occupation of recently vacated niches will require further assessment as sampling of some clades prior to the Late Cretaceous is too poor to make a reliable assessment and several underlying assumptions necessary for competition to occur (e.g., resource limitation) still need investigation. Teasing out the cause(s) of the ‘sauropod decline’ and extinction of stegosaurs in North America following the Late Jurassic will require future research not only into the competitive exclusion hypothesis, but other hypotheses as well with better sampling from Early Cretaceous and Late Jurassic intervals. Although a variety of causes have been proposed to account for the dramatic decrease in sauropod diversity following the Late Jurassic and could have also been applicable to the disappearance of stegosaurs, the potential for competitive replacement of sauropods by hadrosauroids as an explanation has been previously dismissed due to morphological differences without further investigation. Using twelve ecomorphological correlates of the skull, this study provides a preliminary investigation into ecomorphospace occupation of major megaherbivore clades from the Late Jurassic through to the Late Cretaceous of North America and assess if morphological differences were enough to have potentially facilitated dietary niche partitioning between sauropods and iguanodontians and stegosaurs and ankylosaurs. Overlap in reconstructed ecomorphospace was observed between sauropods (particularly non-diplodocid sauropods) and iguanodontians, as would be expected if morphological differences were not enough to facilitate niche partitioning, contrary to original claims used to dismiss the competitive replacement hypothesis. Overlap was also observed between stegosaurs and ankylosaurs, particularly between Late Cretaceous ankylosaurs. Whether this overlap is reflective competitive replacement or opportunistic occupation of recently vacated niches will require further assessment as sampling of some clades prior to the Late Cretaceous is too poor to make a reliable assessment and several underlying assumptions necessary for competition to occur (e.g., resource limitation) still need investigation. Teasing out the cause(s) of the ‘sauropod decline’ and extinction of stegosaurs in North America following the Late Jurassic will require future research not only into the competitive exclusion hypothesis, but other hypotheses as well with better sampling from Early Cretaceous and Late Jurassic intervals.

Ichnogeneric classification of sauropod trackways is determined using qualitative and quantitative descriptions of morphological parameters. More recently, the validity of several of these parameters has been called into question (e.g., trackway gauge). This paper aims to test traditional and more novel landmark-based geometric morphometric (GM) analysis to describe sauropod tracks and trackways. The Courtedoux-Tchâfouè (TCH) tracksite, in NW Switzerland, has been used as a test site because it hosted several Late Jurassic sauropod track-bearing levels, over a short time period (∼40 ka), creating a time capsule of sauropod activity. Exploratory statistical analyses suggest that the TCH trackway dataset can be partitioned into clusters based on trackway parameters (e.g., width of pes angulation pattern/pes length) that demonstrate differences between trackways. Nevertheless, clustering reflected a moderate degree of intercluster similarity and a continuum in TCH trackway morphologies. The GM analysis of TCH pes impressions, from several trackways, indicates a similar morphotype and did not significantly differentiate pes tracks from various stratigraphic levels. Currently, the results indicate that neither linear nor landmark-based geometric morphometric methods strongly segregate tracks at TCH nor show a time-control (i.e., via stratigraphic level) over the short interval studied. The methods reinforce that sauropod pes impression shape is conservative and that combining morphological methods to be inclusive of sauropod trackway data is important. The TCH site demonstrates that variability may reflect morphological continuums and behavioural factors and does not unambiguously differentiate unique sauropod trackmakers. More exploration on the minimum number of trackway parameters as predictors of sauropod ichnotaxonomy is needed. Integrating complementary techniques will provide more insight and practical means of identification and delineation of sauropod tracks and their trackways.

Remains of Garrigatitan meridionalis nov. gen. et sp. were found in two bonebeds of sequence 2 from the upper Campanian site of Velaux-La Bastide Neuve (Aix-en-Provence Basin, Bouches du Rhône department). The vertebrate assemblage is dominated by dinosaurs, including the titanosaur Atsinganosaurus velauciensis. Garrigatitan meridionalis presents three diagnostic characters: hourglass-shaped humeri (proximal and distal thirds of almost the same transversal width) in anterior and posterior views, ilium with a broad rounded hollow slightly posterior to the base of the pubic peduncle, proximolateral margin of the femur only slightly medially deflected. Garrigatitan was a small to medium-sized sauropod (sub/adult individuals between 4–6 metres and 2–2.5 tonnes), showing anatomical differences with Atsinganosaurus, and with the other Late Cretaceous Ibero-Armorican titanosaurs. Large titanosaurian specimens found at Velaux-La Bastide Neuve could belong to adult Garrigatitan individuals reaching a body length of at least 12 metres. Histological analysis of long bones shows features similar to other Late Cretaceous European titanosaurs, indicating that all individuals had reached skeletal maturity (presence of an EFS, heavy remodelling HOS 12 to 14). The new taxon is recovered within the clade Lirainosaurinae. Garrigatitan meridionalis increases the diversity of Late Cretaceous titanosaurs within the Ibero-Armorican Island. A new species of Omeisaurus, O. puxiani sp. nov., from the Middle Jurassic of Southwest China is reported. The holotype consists of partial articulated vertebrae, forelimb, hind limb and other materials of an individual. Comparative study and cladistic analysis show that this new taxon belongs to Omeisaurus, and bears a unique combination of character states, such as all presacral vertebrae opisthocoelous, complex pneumatic fossa system in middle cervical centra, lateral fossae of dorsal centra divided by secondary septa, end of anterior caudal neural spines expanding posteriorly, edge of humerus deltopectoral crest turning posterolaterally and ratio of length of ulna to humerus of 0.69. The previously reported single middle cervical (S66) from the same locality and horizon can be referred to this new species. The discovery of Omeisaurus puxiani enriches the diversity of the genus of Omeisaurus and provides additional information to help understanding the evolutionary history of this genus in Eastern China.
