Abstract

The Vârghiș Gorges karst system (Perșani Mountains, Eastern Carpathians) constituted a point of interest for speleologists, paleontologists and archaeologists since the second half of the 19th century. Their efforts succeeded in highlighting the notable archaeological potential of the area, although the actual research results were not always thoroughly reported. Since 2014, our team reunited specialists from 10 different institutions and various fields of research and initiated archaeological excavations, coupled with achaeozoological, sedimentological and chronometric investigations, in several caves within the Vârghiș Gorges. As the paper below will show, although the results obtained so far are definitively informative, further investigation are clearly needed, in order to accurately clarify aspects pertaining to the intricate cultural and chronological framework.

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to present a series of discoveries attributed to the Turkic nomadic populations (11th– 12th centuries), resulting from archaeological research conducted in 2018 and 2019 in several burial mounds placed in the localities of Târgșoru Nou and Inotești from Prahova County, as well as Lunca from Buzău county. It includes descriptions of the investigated archaeological features, the results of the anthropological and archaeozoological determinations as well as those of the physico-chemical investigations of some metal artefacts, and absolute chronology dates. Given that artefacts were part of the archaeological features investigated, we briefly present information regarding their analogies and occurrence. These discoveries highlight a time period which is otherwise scarcely known in this region and at the same time add weight to other materials already published during past years

Abstract

Human skeletal remains of at least three individuals were unearthed during excavations at the Early Neolithic site of Grumăzeşti – Deleni in northeast Romania (Moldova region) between 1968 and 1978. They comprise the articulated skeleton of an adult buried in a crouched position (M1), and the disarticulated remains of another adult and a juvenile found together in another part of the site and interpreted by the principal excavator, S. Marinescu-Bîlcu, as a disturbed burial (referred to here as M2/ 1– 2). The human remains are described and analysed in terms of state of preservation, age-at-death, sex, stature and pathology. Results of radiocarbon dating and carbon and nitrogen stable isotope analysis of bone collagen from M1 and radiocarbon dates on herbivore bones from the site are presented and discussed.

Abstract

The $\beta^{-}$ decay of $^{81}$Zn to the neutron magic $N=50$ nucleus $^{81}$Ga, with only three valence protons with respect to $^{78}$Ni, was investigated. The study was performed at the ISOLDE facility at CERN by means of $\gamma$ spectroscopy. The $^{81}$Zn half-life was determined to be $T_{1/2}=290(4)$ ms while the $\beta$-delayed neutron emission probability was measured as $P_n=23(4)\%$. The analysis of the $\beta$-gated $\gamma$-ray singles and $\gamma$-$\gamma$ coincidences from the decay of $^{81}$Zn provides 47 new levels and 70 new transitions in $^{81}$Ga. The $\beta^-$$n$ decay of $^{81}$Zn was observed and a new decay scheme into the odd-odd $^{80}$Ga nucleus was established. The half-lives of the first and second excited states of $^{81}$Ga were measured via the fast-timing method using LaBr$_3$(Ce) detectors. The level scheme and transition rates are compared to large-scale shell-model calculations. Abstract

Fast-timing measurements were performed recently in the region of the medium-mass 103,105,107Cd isotopes, produced in fusion evaporation reactions. Emitted gamma-rays were detected by eight HPGe and five LaBr3:Ce detectors working in coincidence. Results on new and re-evaluated half-lives are discussed within a systematic of transition rates. The $7/2_1^+$ states in 103,105,107Cd are interpreted as arising from a single-particle excitation. The half-life analysis of the $11/2_1^-$ states in 103,105,107Cd shows no change in the single-particle transition strength as a function of the neutron number.

Abstract

The content of selenium in basic broiler diets was 50 ± 10, 100 ± 10, 150 ± 10 and 250 ± 10 μgkg-1. At day 14, 28 and 42 tissue samples were collected. Dynamics and selenium deposits in blood, liver, muscle and heart were estimated in relation to the level of dietary selenium and age of broilers. When broilers were fed with diet containing 250 μgkg-1 Se, at day 42 the highest concentration of Se was in liver (570.8 ± 44.1 μgkg-1), blood (430.3 ± 46.5 μgL-1) and heart (237.5 ± 42.8 μgkg-1). At day 14, increase of dietary selenium content from 50 μgkg-1 to 250 μgkg-1 was followed by decrease of selenium deposits in heart: when broilers were fed with basic diet containing 50 μgkg-1 Se measured content of Se in heart muscle was 49.8 ± 15.6 μgkg-1 (99.6%) while in broilers fed with basic diet containing 250 μgkg-1 Se measured content of Se in heart was 147.2 ± 33.4 μgkg-1 (58.9%), respectively. The point of saturation as well as maximal concentration of selenium in liver was reached in period between fourth (556.7 ± 40.6 μgkg-1) and sixth (570.8 ± 44.1 μgkg-1) week of age. Also, feeding with basic diet containing 250 μgkg-1 Se the selenium blood level reached 162.8 ± 28.9 μgL-1 already at day 14 that represent 65.1% of dietary selenium.

Abstract

Half-lives of the low-lying yrast states of $^{212}$Po have been measured using the delayed coincidence fast-timing method. We report on the first measurement of the 41+ half-life, as well as a new measurement of the 61+ half-life with improved accuracy compared to previous studies. The extracted lifetime of the 41+ and 61+ state have been determined to be 100(14) ps and 1.66(28) ns respectively. With these measurements, precise values are now available for the reduced transition strengths B(E2) of all ground state band levels in $^{212}$Po up to the first 8+ state, in particular B(E2; 41+→21+) = 9.4(13) W.u. and B(E2;61+→41+) = 8.7(15) W.u. Comparison of the new available data with an α-clustering model calculation provides evidence that the inclusion of the α-cluster degree of freedom significantly improves agreement with experimental data compared to earlier shell model calculations.

Abstract

We investigated the reaction dynamics induced by the 7Be,8B+208Pb collisions at energies around the Coulomb barrier. Charged particles originated by both the col- lisions were detected by means of 6 ΔE-Eres telescopes of a newly developed detector array. Experimental data were analysed within the framework of the Optical Model and the total reaction cross-sections were compared together and with the 6,7Li+208Pb colli-sion data. According to the preliminary results, 7Be nucleus reactivity is rather similar to the 7Li one whereas the 8B+208Pb total reaction cross section appears to be much larger than those measured for reactions induced by the other weakly-bound projectiles on the same target.

Abstract

Background: No compelling evidence is available about surveillance and follow-up of patients with testicular germ cell tumour (TGCT). Methods: In the light of the best clinical evidence, the Italian Germ cell cancer Group (IGG) and the Associazione Italiana di Oncologia Medica (AIOM) set up a multidisciplinary national consensus conference, involving 42 leading experts and 3 TGCT survivors. A minimum of 50% of votes was required in order to achieve a consensus recommendation on 29 questions. Results: Recommendations have been summarized in three tables, divided by stage I seminoma, stage I nonseminoma and the advanced disease, which may be useful for clinicians to appropriately choose the clinical investigation and its timing during the surveillance and follow-up of TGCT patients based on an accurate estimation of their risk of disease relapse. Conclusions: The IGG-AIOM consensus recommendations may help clinicians to choose appropriate clinical investigations for the surveillance and follow-up of TGCT patients.

Abstract

The scattering process of the Radioactive Ion Beam 7Be from a 208Pb target was measured at three near-barrier energies. The quasi-elastic angular distributions were analyzed within the framework of the optical model to extract the reaction cross sections. The results are compared with those obtained for the reactions induced by the mirror projectile 7Li and by the lightest particle-stable lithium isotope 6Li on the same target. The angular distributions for the production of the two 7Be constituent clusters, namely 3He and 4He, were also measured. In agreement with what observed for the interaction of 7Be with lighter targets, the production of the heavier helium isotope resulted to be much more abundant than that of its lighter counterpart.

International audience; The structure of $^{80}$Ge has been investigated at the ISOLDE facility at CERN. A previous study reported for the first time a low-lying $0^+_2$ intruder state at 639 keV, based on the coincidence with a previously unobserved 1764-keV $γ$ ray, and suggested it as evidence for shape coexistence in $^{80}$Ge. We used the $\beta$ decay from the $3^-$ 22.4-keV state in $^{80}$Ga to enhance the population of low-spin states in $^{80}$Ge, including any excited $0^+$ level, and $\gamma \gamma$ coincidences to investigate it. We observed a 1764-keV $\gamma$ ray in coincidence with strong transitions in $^{80}$Ge, thus not feeding the proposed 639-keV $0^+_2$. No connecting transitions from previously known levels to the 639-keV and 2403-keV $2^+_3$ states could be established either. Shell-model calculations for Ge isotopes and $N=48$ isotones were performed. They succeed to explain most of the experimental levels, but fail to reproduce the presence of a $0^+_2$ state below $≈1200$ keV in $^{80}$Ge. Our experimental findings and shell-model calculations are difficult to reconcile with a very low-lying $0^+_2$ state in $^{80}$Ge.

Abstract

18 pags., 10 figs., 4 tabs., The β- decay of Zn81 to the neutron magic N=50 nucleus Ga81, with only three valence protons with respect to Ni78, was investigated. The study was performed at the ISOLDE facility at CERN by means of γ spectroscopy. The Zn81 half-life was determined to be T1/2=290(4) ms while the β-delayed neutron emission probability was measured as Pn=23(4)%. The analysis of the β-gated γ-ray singles and γ-γ coincidences from the decay of Zn81 provides 47 new levels and 70 new transitions in Ga81. The β-n decay of Zn81 was observed and a new decay scheme into the odd-odd Ga80 nucleus was established. The half-lives of the first and second excited states of Ga81 were measured via the fast-timing method using LaBr3(Ce) detectors. The level scheme and transition rates are compared to large-scale shell-model calculations. Abstract

We investigated the reaction dynamics induced by the Radioactive Ion Beams 7Be and 8B on a 208Pb target at energies around the Coulomb barrier. The two measurements are strongly interconnected, being 7Be (Sα = 1.586 MeV) the loosely bound core of the even more exotic 8B (Sp = 0.1375 MeV) nucleus. Here we summarize the present status of the data analysis for the measurement of the elastic scattering process for both reactions and the preliminary results for the optical model analysis of the collected data.

Abstract

The elastic scattering of the weakly bound radioactive nuclei B8 and Be7 from a Pb208 target was measured for the first time in the energy range around the Coulomb barrier. The data were analyzed using the optical model and the continuum discretized coupled channels (CDCC) formalisms. The reaction cross sections extracted from the optical model fits clearly indicate a remarkably enhanced reaction probability for the very weakly bound B8 (Sp=137.5keV) compared to similar mass nuclei interacting with the same target nucleus. CDCC calculations assuming a He3+He4 cluster model well described the Be7 experimental elastic scattering angular distributions, whereas the use of a Be7+p cluster model of B8 with an inert Be7 core gave a relatively poor description of the corresponding experimental data, suggesting that this model may be too simplistic and the possibility of core excitation should not be ignored.

Abstract

The elastic scattering process for the nuclear reactions induced by the Radioactive Ion Beams Be-7 and B-8 on a Pb-208 target was measured for the first time in the energy range around the Coulomb barrier. Extensive theoretical calculations within the framework of the optical model were performed. An excellent agreement between experimental data and theoretical predictions was achieved for the reaction Be-7 + Pb-208 while a comprehensive understanding of the reaction dynamics induced by the more exotic projectile B-8 is still far to be reached. Predictions of the cross section for the breakup for both systems will also be given.

Abstract

The lifetime of the 9/2+ state of 65Cu, at 2534 keV, has been measured by fast timing techniques, in order to establish wether such state arises from a weak coupling between a p3/2 proton and the 3− octupole vibration at 3.56 MeV in the 64Ni core. The 65Cu nucleus was populated by the reaction 7Li + 64Ni at 32 MeV, at the Horia Hulubei National Institute of Physics and Nuclear Engineering (NIPNE) in Bucharest, and its γ-decay was detected by the ROSPHERE array. The measured lifetime coresponds to a B(E3) reduced transition probability to the ground state equal to 8.89 W.u., in agreement with theoretical predictions in the weak coupling limit.

Abstract

The beta-decay of Zn-81 to the neutron magic N = 50 nucleus Ga-81, with only three valence protons with respect to Ni-78, was investigated. The study was performed at the ISOLDE facility at CERN by means of gamma spectroscopy. The 81Zn half-life was determined to be T-1/2 = 290(4) ms while the beta-delayed neutron emission probability was measured as P-n = 23(4)%. The analysis of the beta-gated gamma-ray singles and gamma-gamma coincidences from the decay of Zn-81 provides 47 new levels and 70 new transitions in Ga-81. The beta(-)n decay of Zn-81 was observed and a new decay scheme into the odd-odd Ga-80 nucleus was established. The half-lives of the first and second excited states of Ga-81 were measured via the fast-timing method using LaBr3(Ce) detectors. The level scheme and transition rates are compared to large-scale shell-model calculations. The low-lying structure of (81)Gais interpreted in terms of the coupling of the three valence protons outside the doubly magic Ni-78 core.
