A better understanding of the materials' fundamental physical processes is necessary to push hybrid perovskite photovoltaic devices towards their theoretical limits. The role of the perovskite grain boundaries is essential to optimise the system thoroughly. The influence of the perovskite grain size and crystal orientation on physical properties and their resulting photovoltaic performance is examined. We develop a novel, straightforward synthesis approach that yields crystals of a similar size but allows the tuning of their orientation to either the (200) or (002) facet alignment parallel to the substrate by manipulating dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and tetrahydrothiophene-1-oxide (THTO) ratios. This decouples crystal orientation from grain size, allowing the study of charge carrier mobility, found to be improved with larger grain sizes, highlighting the importance of minimising crystal disorder to achieve efficient devices. However, devices incorporating crystals with the (200) facet exhibit an s-shape in the current density-voltage curve when standard scan rates are used, which typically signals an energetic interfacial barrier. Using the drift-diffusion simulations, we attribute this to slower-moving ions (mobility of 0.37 × 10-10 cm2 V-1 s-1) in combination with a lower density of mobile ions. The preferential orientation of the perovskite (PVK) is typically accomplished by manipulation of the mixed cation/halide composition of the solution used for wet processing. However, for PVKs grown by thermal evaporation, this has been rarely addressed. It is unclear how variation in crystal orientation affects the optoelectronic properties of thermally evaporated films, including the charge carrier mobility, lifetime, and trap densities. In this study, we use different intermediate annealing temperatures Tinter between two sequential evaporation cycles to control the Cs0.15FA0.85PbI2.85Br0.15 orientation of the final PVK layer. XRD and 2D-XRD measurements reveal that when using no intermediate annealing primarily the (110) orientation is obtained, while when using Tinter = 100 °C a nearly isotropic orientation is found. Most interestingly for Tinter > 130 °C a highly oriented PVK (100) is formed. We found that although bulk electronic properties like photoconductivity are independent of the preferential orientation, surface related properties differ substantially. The highly oriented PVK (100) exhibits improved photoluminescence in terms of yield and lifetime. In addition, high spatial resolution mappings of the contact potential difference (CPD) as measured by KPFM for the highly oriented PVK show a more homogeneous surface potential distribution than those of the nonoriented PVK. Multiple-source thermal evaporation is emerging as an excellent technique to obtain perovskite (PVK) materials for solar cell applications due to its solvent-free processing, accurate control of stoichiometric ratio, and potential for scalability. Nevertheless, the currently reported layer-by-layer deposition approach is afflicted by long processing times caused by the multiple repetitions of thin films, which hinder industrial uptake. On the other hand, the coevaporation entails higher complexity due to the challenges of controlling the sublimation of multiple sources simultaneously. In this work, we propose a simplified approach consisting of a single-cycle deposition (SCD) of three thick precursor layers to obtain high-quality Cs0.15FA0.85PbI2.85Br0.15 (CsFAPbIBr) films. After annealing, the optimized PVK film exhibits comparable properties to the one deposited by multicycle deposition in terms of crystal structure, in-depth uniformity, and optoelectrical properties. Also, the formation and evolution of SCD PVK during annealing are investigated. We found that, in the competitive processes of precursor diffusion and reaction, the presence of cesium bromide can assist precursor mixing driven by the annealing treatment, demonstrating a reaction-limited process in the PVK conversion. At ambient conditions, rare-earth oxyhydride thin films show reversible photochromism and photoconductivity, while their mechanism and relation are still unclear. In this work, this question is explored with in situ time-resolved measurements of both optical and transport properties of Gd-based oxyhydride thin films. It is found that p-type large polaron conduction is the initial mechanism of charge transport; however, upon photo-darkening, a 104-fold increase of conductivity occurs, and n-type carriers become dominant. Further, photochromism and photoconductivity are shown to originate from a single process, as indicated by the fact that the photoconductivity is exponentially proportional to the increase of optical absorption. Metal-halide perovskites deposited by wet-chemical deposition have demonstrated great potential for various electronic applications, including solar cells. A remaining question is how light-induced excess charges become distributed over such polycrystalline material. Here, we examine the local conductive properties of MAPbI3 and CsFAPbI3 by using scanning microwave microscopy (sMIM) in the dark and light. sMIM is an atomic force microscopy (AFM)-based technique measuring variations of the in-phase and out-of-phase signals due to changes in the tip-sample interaction, yielding MIM-Re and MIM-Im images, respectively. Combining this information leads to a picture for CsFAPbI3 in which excess charges are distributed evenly over the grains, but due to local defect-rich areas, possibly related to different crystal facets, local perturbations in carrier concentration exist. For solar cells, this distribution in carrier concentration under illumination leads to variation in the local Fermi level splitting, which should be suppressed to reduce the voltage deficit., ChemE/Opto-electronic Materials, ChemE/O&O groep

Since the first application of a metal halide perovskite (PVK) absorber in a solar cell, these materials have drawn a great deal of attention in the photovoltaic (PV) community, showing exceptional rapid progress in power conversion efficiency. The potential advantages of low-cost, high efficiency, easy processability, and wide range of applications make PVK solar cells (PSCs) a desirable candidate for future uptake in the PV market over traditional semiconductors such as silicon. Furthermore, PVK thin-film technology holds a concrete potential to closely approach the theoretical efficiency limit for single-junction solar cells via unique control of the optoelectronic properties. However, for a disruptive breakthrough of PVK technology from fundamental research to industry, systematic research efforts are required to unravel the poor long-term stability and to reach a reliable large area fabrication process. In this review, we examine in detail recent progress on large-scale PSCs and we discuss challenges for commercialization touching upon the following aspects: material properties, fabrication technology, and industrialization challenges. Besides, the long-term stability and efficiency of large-area PSCs as well as PVK-based two-terminal tandem devices are discussed. In addition, strategies for PSC upscaling are further studied for scalable deposition technologies. Mobilities and lifetimes of photogenerated charge carriers are core properties of photovoltaic materials and can both be characterized by contactless terahertz or microwave measurements. Here, the expertise from fifteen laboratories is combined to quantitatively model the current-voltage characteristics of a solar cell from such measurements. To this end, the impact of measurement conditions, alternate interpretations, and experimental inter-laboratory variations are discussed using a (Cs,FA,MA)Pb(I,Br)3 halide perovskite thin-film as a case study. At 1 sun equivalent excitation, neither transport nor recombination is significantly affected by exciton formation or trapping. Terahertz, microwave, and photoluminescence transients for the neat material yield consistent effective lifetimes implying a resistance-free JV-curve with a potential power conversion efficiency of 24.6 %. For grainsizes above ≈20 nm, intra-grain charge transport is characterized by terahertz sum mobilities of ≈32 cm2 V−1 s−1. Drift-diffusion simulations indicate that these intra-grain mobilities can slightly reduce the fill factor of perovskite solar cells to 0.82, in accordance with the best-realized devices in the literature. Beyond perovskites, this work can guide a highly predictive characterization of any emerging semiconductor for photovoltaic or photoelectrochemical energy conversion. Co-evaporation of metal halide perovskites by thermal evaporation is an attractive method since it does not require harmful solvents and enables precise control of the film thickness. Furthermore, the ability to manipulate the Fermi level allows the formation of a graded homojunction, providing interesting opportunities to improve the charge carrier collection efficiency. However, little is known about how these properties affect the charge carrier dynamics. In this work, the structural and optoelectronic properties of co-evaporated MAPbI3 films varying in thickness (100, 400, and 750 nm) with a gradient in composition are analyzed. The X-ray diffraction patterns show that excess PbI2 is only present in the thick layers. From X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy depth analysis, the I/Pb atomic ratio indicates methylammonium iodide deficiencies that become more prominent with thicker films, resulting in differently n-doped regions across the thick MAPbI3 films. We suggest that due to these differently n-doped regimes, an internal electric field is formed. Side-selective time-resolved microwave photo conductivity measurements show an elongation of the charge carrier lifetimes on increasing thickness. To increase the open-circuit voltage in perovskite-based solar cells, recombination processes at the interface with transport layers (TLs) should be identified and reduced. We investigated the charge carrier dynamics in bilayers of methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI3) with C60 or Spiro-OMeTAD using time-resolved microwave conductance (TRMC) measurements with and without bias illumination (BI). By modeling the results, we quantified recombination losses in bare MAPbI3 and extraction into the TLs. Only under BI did we find that the density of deep traps increases in bare MAPbI3, substantially enhancing trap-mediated losses. This reversible process is prevented in a bilayer with C60 but not with Spiro-OMeTAD. While under BI extraction rates reduce significantly in both bilayers, only in MAPbI3/Spiro-OMeTAD does interfacial recombination also increases, substantially reducing the quasi Fermi level splitting. This work demonstrates the impact of BI on charge dynamics and shows that adjusting the Fermi level of TLs is imperative to reduce interfacial recombination losses., ChemE/Opto-electronic Materials

Cs2AgBiBr6 (CABB) has been proposed as a promising nontoxic alternative to lead halide perovskites. However, low charge carrier collection efficiencies remain an obstacle for the incorporation of this material in optoelectronic applications. In this work, we study the optoelectronic properties of CABB thin films using steady state and transient absorption and reflectance spectroscopy. We find that optical measurements on such thin films are distorted as a consequence of multiple reflections within the film. Moreover, we discuss the pathways behind conductivity loss in these thin films, using a combination of microsecond transient absorption spectroscopy and time-resolved microwave conductivity measurements. We demonstrate that a combined effect of carrier loss and localization results in the conductivity loss in CABB thin films. Moreover, we find that the charge carrier diffusion length and grain size are of the same order of magnitude. This suggests that the material's surface is an important contributor to charge-carrier loss., ChemE/Opto-electronic Materials

A long photoluminescence decay lifetime has been regarded as a generic indication of long charge carrier recombination lifetime in semiconductors such as metal halide perovskites (MHPs), which have shown tremendous success in solar cells. Here, we report that MHP polycrystalline films with extrinsic metal ions have a very long charge recombination lifetime, but a much shorter photoluminescence decay lifetime, and this huge difference can be explained by a model of lateral homojunction within each individual grain. The lateral homojunction is formed due to the doping along grain boundaries by metal ions, and then verified by nanoscale potential mapping and transient photo-response mapping. The built-in electric field within each grain reduces the recombination of free charge carriers within the perovskite grain and along grain boundaries, while the free electrons and holes are collected to cathode and anode through the grain boundaries and grain interiors, respectively. Then, the efficiencies of MHP polycrystalline solar cells are increased., ChemE/Opto-electronic Materials

Wide-band-gap perovskites such as methylammonium lead bromide (MAPB) are promising materials for tandem solar cells because of their potentially high open-circuit voltage, which is yet still far below the maximum limit. The relatively short charge-carrier lifetimes deduced from time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) measurements seem in strong contrast with the long lifetimes observed with time-resolved photoconductance measurements. This is explained by a large amount of hole defect states, NT > 1016 cm-3, in spin-coated layers of MAPB residing at or near the grain boundaries. The introduction of hypophosphorous acid (HPA) increases the average grain size by a factor of 3 and reduces the total concentration of the trap states by a factor of 10. The introduction of HPA also increases the fraction of initially generated holes that undergo charge transfer to the selective contact, Spiro-OMeTAD (SO), by an order of magnitude. In contrast to methylammonium lead iodide (MAPI)/SO bilayers, a reduction of the carrier lifetime is observed in MAPB/SO bilayers, which is attributed to the fact that injected holes undergo interfacial recombination via these trap states. To further understand the optoelectronic properties of metal halide perovskites, we investigate sub-bandgap absorption in methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI3) films. Charge carrier dynamics are studied using time-resolved microwave conductivity measurements using sub-bandgap excitation. From changes in the decay dynamics as a function of excitation energy and intensity, we have identified three regimes: (i) Band-like charge transport at photon energies above 1.48 eV; (ii) a transitional regime between 1.48 and 1.40 eV; and (iii) below 1.40 eV localized optically active defects (8 × 1013 cm-3) dominate the absorption at low intensities, while two-photon absorption is observed at high intensities. We determined an Urbach energy of approximately 11.3 meV, indicative of a low structural and/or thermal disorder. Surprisingly, even excitation 120 meV below the bandgap leads to efficient charge transfer into electron (C60) or hole (spiro-OMeTAD) transport layers. Therefore, we conclude that for MAPbI3, the band tail states do not lead to nonradiative losses., ChemE/Opto-electronic Materials

In this contribution we demonstrate a solid-state approach to triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion for application in a solar cell device in which absorption of near-infrared light is followed by direct electron injection into an inorganic substrate. We use time-resolved microwave photoconductivity experiments to study the injection of electrons into the electron-accepting substrate (TiO2) in a trilayer device consisting of a triplet sensitizer (fluorinated zinc phthalocyanine), triplet acceptor (methyl subsituted perylenediimide), and smooth polycrystalline TiO2. Absorption of light at 700 nm leads to the almost quantitative generation of triplet excited states by intersystem crossing. This is followed by Dexter energy transfer to the triplet acceptor layer where triplet annihilation occurs and concludes by injection of an electron into TiO2 from the upconverted singlet excited state., ChemE/Opto-electronic Materials, ChemE/O&O groep

Recently, several studies have investigated dielectric properties as a possible origin of the exceptional optoelectronic properties of metal halide perovskites (MHPs). In this study we investigated the temperature-dependent dielectric behavior of different MHP films at different frequencies. In the gigahertz regime, dielectric losses in methylammonium-based samples are dominated by the rotational dynamics of the organic cation. Upon increasing the temperature from 160 to 300 K, the rotational relaxation time, τ, decreases from 400 (200) to 6 (1) ps for MAPb-I3 (-Br3). By contrast, we found negligible temperature-dependent variations in τ for a mixed cation/mixed halide FA0.85MA0.15Pb(I0.85Br0.15)3. From temperature-dependent time-resolved microwave conductance measurements we conclude that the dipolar reorientation of the MA cation does not affect charge carrier mobility and lifetime in MHPs. Therefore, charge carriers do not feel the relatively slow-moving MA cations, despite their great impact on the dielectric constants., ChemE/Opto-electronic Materials

Mixed-halide lead perovskites have attracted significant attention in the field of photovoltaics and other optoelectronic applications due to their promising bandgap tunability and device performance. Here, the changes in photoluminescence and photoconductance of solution-processed triple-cation mixed-halide (Cs0.06MA0.15FA0.79)Pb(Br0.4I0.6)3 perovskite films (MA: methylammonium, FA: formamidinium) are studied under solar-equivalent illumination. It is found that the illumination leads to localized surface sites of iodide-rich perovskite intermixed with passivating PbI2 material. Time- and spectrally resolved photoluminescence measurements reveal that photoexcited charges efficiently transfer to the passivated iodide-rich perovskite surface layer, leading to high local carrier densities on these sites. The carriers on this surface layer therefore recombine with a high radiative efficiency, with the photoluminescence quantum efficiency of the film under solar excitation densities increasing from 3% to over 45%. At higher excitation densities, nonradiative Auger recombination starts to dominate due to the extremely high concentration of charges on the surface layer. This work reveals new insight into phase segregation of mixed-halide mixed-cation perovskites, as well as routes to highly luminescent films by controlling charge density and transfer in novel device structures., ChemE/Opto-electronic Materials

While the power conversion efficiency of metal halide perovskite (MHP) solar cells has increased enormously, the open-circuit voltage, V oc , is still below the conceivable limit. Here, we derive the Fermi level splitting, μ F , for various types of noncontacted MHPs, which sets a limit for their achievable V oc , using rate constants and mobilities obtained from time-resolved photoconductivity measurements. Interestingly, we find that for vacuum-evaporated MAPbI 3 and K + -doped (MA,FA,Cs)Pb(I/Br) 3 , the μ F /e values are close to the reported V oc values. This implies that for an improvement of the V oc , charge carrier recombination within the bare perovskite has to be reduced. On the other hand, for MHPs with Cs + and/or Rb + addition, the experimental V oc is still below μ F /e, suggesting that higher voltages are feasible by optimizing the transport layers. The presented approach will help to select which techniques and transport layers are beneficial to improve the efficiency of MHP solar cells., ChemE/Opto-electronic Materials

Despite intense research into the optoelectronic properties of metal halide perovskites (MHPs), sub-bandgap absorption in MHPs remains largely unexplored. Here we recorded two-photon absorption spectra of MHPs using the time-resolved microwave conductivity technique. A two-step upward trend is observed in the two-photon absorption spectrum for methylammonium lead iodide, and some analogues, which implies that the commonly used scaling law is not applicable to MHPs. This aspect is further confirmed by temperature-dependent conductivity measurements. Using an empirical multiband tight binding model, spectra for methylammonium lead iodide were calculated by integration over the entire Brillouin zone, showing compelling similarity with experimental results. We conclude that the second upward trend in the two-photon absorption spectrum originates from additional optical transitions to the heavy and light electron bands formed by the strong spin-orbit coupling. Hence, valuable insight can be obtained in the opto-electronic properties of MHPs by sub-bandgap spectroscopy, complemented by modelling., ChemE/Opto-electronic Materials, ChemE/O&O groep

Two of the key parameters that characterize the usefulness of organic semiconductors for organic or hybrid organic/inorganic solar cells are the mobility of charges and the diffusion length of excitons. Both parameters are strongly related to the supramolecular organization in the material. In this work we have investigated the relation between the solid-state molecular packing and the exciton diffusion length, charge carrier mobility, and charge carrier separation yield using two perylene diimide (PDI) derivatives which differ in their substitution. We have used the time-resolved microwave photoconductivity technique and measured charge carrier mobilities of 0.32 and 0.02 cm2/(Vs) and determined exciton diffusion lengths of 60 and 18 nm for octyl- and bulky hexylheptyl-imide substituted PDIs, respectively. This diffusion length is independent of substrate type and aggregate domain size. The differences in charge carrier mobility and exciton diffusion length clearly reflect the effect of solid-state packing of PDIs on their optoelectronic properties and show that significant improvements can be obtained by effectively controlling the solid-state packing., ChemE/Opto-electronic Materials

Growing large, oriented grains of perovskite often leads to efficient devices, but it is unclear if properties of the grains are responsible for the efficiency. Domains observed in SEM are commonly misidentified with crystallographic grains, but SEM images do not provide diffraction information. We study methylammoinium lead iodide (MAPbI3) films fabricated via flash infrared annealing (FIRA) and the conventional antisolvent (AS) method by measuring grain size and orientation using electron back-scattered diffraction (EBSD) and studying how these affect optoelectronic properties such as local photoluminescence (PL), charge carrier lifetimes, and mobilities. We observe a local enhancement and shift of the PL emission at different regions of the FIRA clusters, but we observe no effect of crystal orientation on the optoelectronic properties. Additionally, despite substantial differences in grain size between the two systems, we find similar optoelectronic properties. These findings show that optoelectronic quality is not necessarily related to the orientation and size of crystalline domains., ChemE/Opto-electronic Materials

The highest reported efficiencies of metal halide perovskite (MHP) solar cells are all based on mixed perovskites, such as (FA,MA,Cs)Pb(I1-xBrx)3. Despite demonstrated structural changes induced by light soaking, it is unclear how the charge carrier dynamics are affected across this entire material family. Here, various (FA,MA,Cs)Pb(I1-xBrx)3 perovskite films are light-soaked in nitrogen, and changes in optoelectronic properties are investigated through time-resolved microwave conductivity (TRMC) and optical and structural techniques. To fit the TRMC decay kinetics obtained for pristine (FA,MA,Cs)Pb(I1-xBrx)3 for various excitation densities, additional shallow states have to be included, which are not required for describing TRMC traces of single-cation MHPs. These shallow states can, independently of x, be removed by light soaking, which leads to a reduction in the imbalance between the diffusional motion of electrons and holes. We interpret the shallow states as a result of initially well-intermixed halide distributions, which upon light soaking segregate into domains with distinct band gaps., ChemE/Opto-electronic Materials

Double perovskites, comprising two different cations, are potential nontoxic alternatives to lead halide perovskites. Here, we characterized thin films and crystals of Cs2AgBiBr6 by time-resolved microwave conductance (TRMC), which probes formation and decay of mobile charges upon pulsed irradiation. Optical excitation of films results in the formation of charges with a yield times mobility product, φΣμ > 1 cm2/Vs. On excitation of millimeter-sized crystals, the TRMC signals show, apart from a fast decay, a long-lived tail. Interestingly, this tail is dominant when exciting close to the bandgap, implying the presence of mobile charges with microsecond lifetimes. From the temperature and intensity dependence of the TRMC signals, we deduce a shallow trap state density of around 1016/cm3 in the bulk of the crystal. Despite this high concentration, trap-assisted recombination of charges in the bulk appears to be slow, which is promising for photovoltaic applications., ChemE/Opto-electronic Materials

The relationship between the dipole moment of the methylammonium cation and the optoelectronic properties of lead halide perovskites remains under debate. We show that both the temperature-dependent charge carrier mobility and recombination kinetics are identical for methylammonium and cesium lead iodide, indicating that the role of the monovalent cation is subordinate to the lead iodide framework. From the observation that for both perovskites the electron-hole recombination is thermally activated, we speculate that the bandgap is slightly indirect., ChemE/Opto-electronic Materials

Two-dimensional (2D) halide perovskites are a class of materials in which 2D layers of perovskite are separated by large organic cations. Conventionally, the 2D perovskites incorporate organic cations as spacers, but these organic cations also offer a route to introduce specific functionality in the material. In this work, we demonstrate, by density functional theory calculations, that the introduction of electron withdrawing and electron donating molecules leads to the formation of localized states, either in the organic or the inorganic part. Furthermore, we show that the energy of the bands located in the organic and inorganic parts can be tuned independently. The organic cation levels can be tuned by changing the electron withdrawing/donating character, whereas the energy levels in the inorganic part can be modified by varying the number of inorganic perovskite layers. This opens a new window for the design of 2D perovskites with properties tuned for specific applications., ChemE/Opto-electronic Materials

Recently, halide double perovskites (HDPs), such as Cs2AgBiBr6, have been reported as promising nontoxic alternatives to lead halide perovskites. However, it remains unclear whether the charge-transport properties of these materials are as favorable as for lead-based perovskites. In this work, we study the mobilities of charges in Cs2AgBiBr6 and in mixed antimony-bismuth Cs2AgBi1-xSbxBr6, in which the band gap is tunable from 2.0 to 1.6 eV. Using temperature-dependent time-resolved microwave conductivity techniques, we find that the mobility is proportional to T-p (with p ≈ 1.5). Importantly, this indicates that phonon scattering is the dominant scattering mechanism determining the charge carrier mobility in these HDPs similar to the state-of-the-art lead-based perovskites. Finally, we show that wet chemical processing of Cs2AgBi1-xSbxBr6 powders is a successful route to prepare thin films of these materials, which paves the way toward photovoltaic devices based on nontoxic HDPs with tunable band gaps., ChemE/Opto-electronic Materials

Metal halide perovskites are of great interest for various high-performance optoelectronic applications. The ability to tune the perovskite bandgap continuously by modifying the chemical composition opens up applications for perovskites as coloured emitters, in building-integrated photovoltaics, and as components of tandem photovoltaics to increase the power conversion efficiency. Nevertheless, performance is limited by non-radiative losses, with luminescence yields in state-of-the-art perovskite solar cells still far from 100 per cent under standard solar illumination conditions. Furthermore, in mixed halide perovskite systems designed for continuous bandgap tunability (bandgaps of approximately 1.7 to 1.9 electronvolts), photoinduced ion segregation leads to bandgap instabilities. Here we demonstrate substantial mitigation of both non-radiative losses and photoinduced ion migration in perovskite films and interfaces by decorating the surfaces and grain boundaries with passivating potassium halide layers. We demonstrate external photoluminescence quantum yields of 66 per cent, which translate to internal yields that exceed 95 per cent. The high luminescence yields are achieved while maintaining high mobilities of more than 40 square centimetres per volt per second, providing the elusive combination of both high luminescence and excellent charge transport. When interfaced with electrodes in a solar cell device stack, the external luminescence yield - a quantity that must be maximized to obtain high efficiency - remains as high as 15 per cent, indicating very clean interfaces. We also demonstrate the inhibition of transient photoinduced ion-migration processes across a wide range of mixed halide perovskite bandgaps in materials that exhibit bandgap instabilities when unpassivated. We validate these results in fully operating solar cells. Tailoring the physical properties of hybrid lead metal halide APbX3 perovskites by means of compositional engineering is one of the key factors contributing to the development of highly efficient and stable perovskite solar cells. While the beneficial effects of partial ionic replacement at the A- and X-sites are largely demonstrated, partial replacement of Pb2+ is less explored. Here, we developed a solution-based procedure to prepare thin films of mixed-metal MAPb1-aMnaI3 perovskites. Although Mn2+ ions have a size that can potentially fit in the B-sites of MAPbI3, using a combination of structural and chemical analysis, we show that only less than 10% of Pb2+ can be replaced by Mn2+. A 3% replacement of Pb2+ by Mn2+ leads to an elongation of the charge carrier lifetimes as concluded from time-resolved PL measurements. However, by analysis of the time-resolved microwave conductance data, we show that the charge carrier mobilities are largely unbalanced, which is in accordance with density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicating that the effective mass of the hole is much higher than that of the electron. Increasing the concentration of Mn2+ in the precursor solution above 10% results in formation of amorphous Mn-rich domains in the film, while the perovskite lattice becomes depleted of Mn2+. These domains negatively affect the charge carrier mobilities and shorten the lifetime of photogenerated carriers. Metal halide perovskites such as methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI3) are highly promising materials for photovoltaics. However, the relationship between the organic nature of the cation and the optoelectronic quality remains debated. In this work, we investigate the optoelectronic properties of fully inorganic vapour-deposited and spin-coated black-phase CsPbI3 thin films. Using the time-resolved microwave conductivity technique, we measure charge carrier mobilities up to 25 cm2/(V s) and impressively long charge carrier lifetimes exceeding 10 μs for vapour-deposited CsPbI3, while the carrier lifetime reaches less than 0.2 μs in the spin-coated samples. Finally, we show that these improved lifetimes result in enhanced device performance with power conversion efficiencies close to 9%. Altogether, these results suggest that the charge carrier mobility and recombination lifetime are mainly dictated by the inorganic framework rather than the organic nature of the cation, ChemE/Opto-electronic Materials

Metal halide perovskites such as methylammonium lead iodide (CH3 NH3 PbI3) are generating great excitement due to their outstanding optoelectronic properties, which lend them to application in high-efficiency solar cells and light-emission devices. However, there is currently debate over what drives the second-order electron-hole recombination in these materials. Here, we propose that the bandgap in CH3 NH3 PbI3 has a direct-indirect character. Time-resolved photo-conductance measurements show that generation of free mobile charges is maximized for excitation energies just above the indirect bandgap. Furthermore, we find that second-order electron-hole recombination of photo-excited charges is retarded at lower temperature. These observations are consistent with a slow phonon-assisted recombination pathway via the indirect bandgap. Interestingly, in the low-temperature orthorhombic phase, fast quenching of mobile charges occurs independent of the temperature and photon excitation energy. The optoelectronic properties of hybrid perovskites can be easily tailored by varying their components. Specifically, mixing the common short organic cation (methylammonium (MA)) with a larger one (e.g., butyl ammonium (BA)) results in 2-dimensional perovskites with varying thicknesses of inorganic layers separated by the large organic cation. In both of these applications, a detailed understanding of the dissociation and recombination of electron-hole pairs is of prime importance. In this work, we give a clear experimental demonstration of the interconversion between bound excitons and free charges as a function of temperature by combining microwave conductivity techniques with photoluminescence measurements. We demonstrate that the exciton binding energy varies strongly (between 80 and 370 meV) with the thickness of the inorganic layers. Additionally, we show that the mobility of charges increases with the layer thickness, in agreement with calculated effective masses from electronic structure calculations., ChemE/Opto-electronic Materials

In view of its band gap of 2.2 eV and its stability, methylammonium lead bromide (MAPbBr3) is a possible candidate to serve as a light absorber in a subcell of a multijunction solar cell. Using complementary temperature-dependent time-resolved microwave conductance (TRMC) and photoluminescence (TRPL) measurements, we demonstrate that the exciton yield increases with lower temperature at the expense of the charge carrier generation yield. The low-energy emission at around 580 nm in the cubic phase and the second broad emission peak at 622 nm in the orthorhombic phase originate from radiative recombination of charges trapped in defects with mobile countercharges. We present a kinetic model describing both the decay in conductance as well as the slow ingrowth of the TRPL. Knowledge of defect states at the surface of various crystal phases is of interest to reach higher open-circuit voltages in MAPbBr3-based cells., ChemE/Opto-electronic Materials

Organic-inorganic hybrid halide perovskites are a promising class of materials for photovoltaic application with reported power efficiencies over ∼22%. However, not much is known about the influence of the organic dipole rotation and phase transitions on charge carrier dynamics. Here, we report substantial changes in mobility and lifetime of charge carriers in CH3NH3PbI3 after the low-temperature tetragonal (β) to orthorhombic (γ) phase transition. By using microwave conductivity measurements, we observed that the mobility and lifetime of ionized charge carriers increase as the temperature decreases and a sudden increment is seen after the β-γ phase transition. For CH3NH3PbI3, the mobility and the half-lifetime increase by a factor of 3-6 compared with the values before the β-γ phase transition. We attribute the considerable change in the dynamics at low temperature to the decrease of the inherent dynamic disorder of the organic cation (CH3NH3 +) inside the perovskite crystal structure., ChemE/Opto-electronic Materials

In photovoltaic devices, the photo-generated charge carriers are typically assumed to be in thermal equilibrium with the lattice. In conventional materials, this assumption is experimentally justified as carrier thermalization completes before any significant carrier transport has occurred. Here, we demonstrate by unifying time-resolved optical and electrical experiments and Monte Carlo simulations over an exceptionally wide dynamic range that in the case of organic photovoltaic devices, this assumption is invalid. As the photo-generated carriers are transported to the electrodes, a substantial amount of their energy is lost by continuous thermalization in the disorder broadened density of states. Since thermalization occurs downward in energy, carrier motion is boosted by this process, leading to a time-dependent carrier mobility as confirmed by direct experiments. We identify the time and distance scales relevant for carrier extraction and show that the photo-generated carriers are extracted from the operating device before reaching thermal equilibrium.

We discuss the formation of TiO2 thin films via DC reactive magnetron sputtering. The oxygen concentration during sputtering proved to be a crucial parameter with respect to the final film structure and properties. The initial deposition provided amorphous films that crystallise upon annealing to anatase or rutile, depending on the initial sputtering conditions. Substoichiometric films (TiOx), obtained by sputtering at relatively low oxygen concentration, formed rutile upon annealing in air, whereas stoichiometric films formed anatase.
