We report the observation of photo-induced plasmon-phonon coupled modes in the group IV-VI semiconductor PbTe using Fourier-transform inelastic X-ray scattering at the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS). We measure the near-zone-center dispersion of the heavily screened longitudinal optical (LO) phonon branch as extracted from differential changes in x-ray diffuse scattering intensity following above band gap photoexcitation., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures

We investigate from first-principles theory and experiment the generation of phonons on picosecond timescales and the relaxation of carriers in multiple conduction band valleys of photo-excited Ge by inter-valley electron-phonon scattering. We provide a full description of the phonon and electron relaxation dynamics without adjustable parameters. Simulations of the time-evolution of phonon populations, based on first-principles band structure and electron-phonon and phonon-phonon matrix elements, are compared with data from time-resolved x-ray diffuse scattering experiments, performed at the LCLS x-ray free-electron laser facility, which measures the diffuse scattering intensity following photo-excitation by a 50 fs near-infrared optical pulse. Comparing calculations and measurements show that the intensity of the non-thermal x-ray diffuse scattering signal, that is observed to grow substantially near the L-point of the Brillouin zone over 3-5 ps, is due to phonons generated by scattering of carriers between the $\Delta$ and L valleys. Non-thermal phonon populations throughout the Brillouin zone are observed and simulated from first principles without adjustable parameters for times up to 10 ps. With inclusion of phonon decay through 3-phonon processes, the simulations also account for other non-thermal features observed in the x-ray diffuse scattering intensity, which are due to anharmonic phonon-phonon scattering of the phonons initially generated by electron-phonon scattering., Comment: 12 pages, 14 figures

Calcium ruthenate ($CaRuO_3$) is widely believed to be located close to a quantum critical point due to the strong non-Fermi-liquid behavior expressed in the temperature dependence of electronic transport, specific heat, optical conductivity, etc. However, the corresponding anomalous behavior, marking crossover temperature regimes in the magnetic response of $CaRuO_3$, is still lacking. Here we report detailed AC and DC magnetic susceptibility measurements of $CaRuO_3$ and $CaRu_{0.97}Ti_{0.03}O_3$. The AC magnetic susceptibility measurements of the $CaRuO_3$ show a slight dependence on the frequency of AC magnetic field below ~ 40 K, and an additional subtle change of curvature around 12 K. We interpret these results as a critical slowing down of spin fluctuations towards T=0 K. We confirm these observations by magnetic measurements of $CaRu_{0.97}Ti_{0.03}O_3$, which show a pronounced magnetic response corresponding to the above temperatures., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

The interactions between electrons and phonons drive a large array of technologically relevant material properties including ferroelectricity, thermoelectricity, and phase-change behaviour. In the case of many group IV-VI, V, and related materials, these interactions are strong and the materials exist near electronic and structural phase transitions. Their close proximity to phase instability produces a fragile balance among the various properties. The prototypical example is PbTe whose incipient ferroelectric behaviour has been associated with large phonon anharmonicity and thermoelectricity. Experimental measurements on PbTe reveal anomalous lattice dynamics, especially in the soft transverse optical phonon branch. This has been interpreted in terms of both giant anharmonicity and local symmetry breaking due to off-centering of the Pb ions. The observed anomalies have prompted renewed theoretical and computational interest, which has in turn revived focus on the extent that electron-phonon interactions drive lattice instabilities in PbTe and related materials. Here, we use Fourier-transform inelastic x-ray scattering (FT-IXS) to show that photo-injection of free carriers stabilizes the paraelectric state. With support from constrained density functional theory (CDFT) calculations, we find that photoexcitation weakens the long-range forces along the cubic direction tied to resonant bonding and incipient ferroelectricity. This demonstrates the importance of electronic states near the band edges in determining the equilibrium structure., Comment: 9 page, 3 figures

Measurements of the magnetic field penetration depth \lambda in superconductor Mo_3Sb_7 (T_c~2.1 K) were carried out by means of muon-spin-rotation. The absolute values of \lambda, the Ginzburg-Landau parameter \kappa, the first H_{c1} and the second H_{c2} critical fields at T=0 are \lambda(0)=720(100)nm, \kappa(0)=55(9), \mu_0H_{c1}(0)=1.8(3)mT, and \mu_0H_{c2}(0)=1.9(2)T. The zero temperature value of the superconducting energy gap \Delta(0) was found to be 0.35(1)meV corresponding to the ratio 2\Delta(0)/k_BT_c=3.83(10). At low temperatures \lambda^{-2}(T) saturates and becomes constant below T~0.3T_c, in agreement with what is expected for s-wave BCS superconductors. Our results suggest that Mo_3Sb_7 is a BCS superconductor with the isotropic energy gap, Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

In a recent article Tran et al. [Phys. Rev.B 78, 172505 (2008)] report on the result of the muon-spin rotation (\muSR) measurements of Mo_3Sb_7 superconductor. Based on the analysis of the temperature and the magnetic field dependence of the Gaussian relaxation rate \sigma_{sc} they suggest that Mo_3Sb_7 is the superconductor with two isotropic s-wave like gaps. An additional confirmation was obtained from the specific heat data published earlier by partly the same group of authors in [Acta Mater. 56, 5694 (2008)]. The purpose of this Comment is to point out that from the analysis made by Tran et al. the presence of two superconducting energy gaps in Mo_3Sb_7 can not be justified. The analysis of \muSR data does not account for the reduction of \sigma_{sc} with increasing temperature, and, hence, yields inaccurate information on the magnetic penetration depth. The specific heat data can be satisfactory described within the framework of the one-gap model with the small residual specific heat component. The experimental data of Tran et al., as well as our earlier published \muSR data [Phys. Rev. B 78, 014502 (2008)] all seem to be consistent with is the presence of single isotropic superconducting energy gap in Mo_3Sb_7., Comment: Comment on Phys.Rev.B 78, 172505 (2008)

We report on measurements of the in-plane magnetic penetration depth \lambda_{ab} in the infinite-layer electron-doped high-temperature cuprate superconductor Sr_0.9La_0.1CuO_2 by means of muon-spin rotation. The observed temperature and magnetic field dependences of \lambda_{ab} are consistent with the presence of a substantial s-wave component in the superconducting order parameter in good agreement with the results of tunneling, specific heat, and small-angle neutron scattering experiments., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

Oxygen isotope (^{16}O/^{18}O) effects (OIE's) on the superconducting transition (T_c), the spin-glass ordering (T_g), and the antiferromagnetic ordering (T_N) temperatures were studied for Y_1-xPr_xBa_2Cu_3O_7-\delta as a function of Pr content (0.0\leq x \leq 1.0). The OIE on T_c increases with increasing x up to x\approx0.55, where superconductivity disappears. For decreasing x the OIE's on T_N and T_g increase down to x\approx 0.7 where antiferromagnetic order and down to x\approx0.3 where spin-glass behavior vanish, respectively. The OIE's on T_g and T_N are found to have {\it opposite signs} as compared to the OIE on T_c. All OIE's are suggested to arise from the isotope dependent mobility (kinetic energy) of the charge carriers., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, 1 table

The oxygen-isotope (^{16}O/^{18}O) effect (OIE) on the in-plane magnetic penetration depth \lambda_{ab}(0) in optimally-doped YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-\delta} and La_{1.85}Sr_{0.15}CuO_4, and in slightly underdoped YBa_2Cu_4O_8 and Y_{0.8}Pr_{0.2}Ba_2Cu_3O_{7-\delta} was studied by means of muon-spin rotation. A substantial OIE on \lambda_{ab}(0) with an OIE exponent \beta_O=-d\ln\lambda_{ab}(0)/d\ln M_O\approx - 0.2 (M_O is the mass of the oxygen isotope), and a small OIE on the transition temperature T_c with an OIE exponent \alpha_O=-d\ln T_{c}/d \ln M_O\simeq0.02 to 0.1 were observed. The observation of a substantial isotope effect on \lambda_{ab}(0), even in cuprates where the OIE on T_c is small, indicates that lattice effects play an important role in cuprate HTS., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Specific heat of the layered NaxCoO2 (x=0.65, 0.70 and 0.75) oxides has been measured in the temperature range of 3-360 K and magnetic field of 0 and 9 T. The analysis of data, assuming the combined effect of inter-layer superexchange and the phase separation into mesoscopic magnetic domains with localized spins embedded in a matrix with itinerant electronic character, suggests that the dominant contribution to the specific heat in the region of short-range ordering is mediated by quasi-2D antiferromagnetic clusters, perpendicular to the CoO2 layers.

Muon spin rotation (mSR) measurements of the in-plane penetration depth lambda_ab have been performed in the electron-doped infinite layer high-Tc superconductor (HTS) Sr0.9La0.1CuO2. Absence of the magnetic rare-earth ions in this compound allowed to measure for the first time the absolute value of lambda_ab(0) in electron-doped HTS using mSR. We found lambda_ab(0)=116(2) nm. The zero-temperature depolarization rate sigma(0)?1/lambda_ab(0)^2=4.6(1) MHz is more than four times higher than expected from the Uemura line. Therefore this electron-doped HTS does not follow the Uemura relation found for hole-doped HTS., Comment: to be published in Physical Review Letters

Magnetization and muon spin relaxation on MgB2 were measured as a function of field at 2 K. Both indicate an inverse-squared penetration depth strongly decreasing with increasing field H below about 1 T. Magnetization also suggests the anisotropy of the penetration depth to increase with increasing H, interpolating between a low Hc1 and a high Hc2 anisotropy. Torque vs angle measurements are in agreement with this finding, while also ruling out drastic differences between the mixed state anisotropies of the two basic length scales penetration depth and coherence length., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

Muon-spin rotation (muSR) studies of the oxygen isotope (^{16}O/^{18}O) effect (OIE) on the in-plane magnetic field penetration depth lambda_{ab} in cuprate high-temperature superconductors (HTS) are presented. First, the doping dependence of the OIE on the transition temperature T_c in various HTS is briefly discussed. It is observed that different cuprate families show a similar doping dependence of the OIE on T_c. Then, bulk muSR, low-energy muSR, and magnetization studies of the total and site-selective OIE on lambda_{ab} are described in some detail. A substantial OIE on lambda_{ab} was observed in various cuprate families at all doping levels, suggesting that cuprate HTS are non-adiabatic superconductors. The experiments clearly demonstrate that the total OIE on T_c and lambda_{ab} arise from the oxygen sites within the superconducting CuO_2 planes, demonstrating that the phonon modes involving the movement of planar oxygen are dominantly coupled to the supercarriers. Finally, it is shown that the OIE on T_c and lambda_{ab} exhibit a relation that appears to be generic for different families of cuprate HTS. The observation of these unusual isotope effects implies that lattice effects play an essential role in cuprate HTS and have to be considered in any realistic model of high-temperature superconductivity., Comment: 22 pages, 12 figures. NMR, EPR and magnetization measurements in Na$_x$CoO$_2$ for $0.65\leq x\leq 0.75$ are presented. While the EPR signal arises from Co$^{4+}$ magnetic moments ordering at $T_c\simeq 26$ K, $^{59}$Co NMR signal originates from cobalt nuclei in metallic regions with no long range magnetic order and characterized by a generalized susceptibility typical of strongly correlated metallic systems. This phase separation in metallic and magnetic insulating regions is argued to occur below $T^*(x)$ ($220 - 270$ K). Above $T^*$ an anomalous decrease in the intensity of the EPR signal is observed and associated with the delocalization of the electrons which for $T

We report site-selective oxygen isotope ($^{16}$O/$^{18}$O) effect (OIE) measurements on the in-plane penetration depth $\lambda_{ab} $ in underdoped Y$_{0.6}$Pr$_{0.4}$Ba$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-\delta}$, using the muon-spin rotation ($\mu$SR) technique. A pronounced OIE on the transition temperature $T_c$ as well as on $\lambda_{ab}^{-2}(0)$ was observed, which mainly arises from the oxygen sites within the superconducting CuO$_2$ planes (100 % within error bar). The values of the corresponding relative isotope shifts were found to be $T_c/T_c= -3.7(4)%$ and $\Delta\lambda^{-2}_{ab}(0)/\lambda^{-2}_{ab}(0)= -6.2(1.0)%$. The magnetic penetration depth $\lambda(0)$ in polycrystalline MgB$_{2}$ for different boron isotopes ($^{10}$B/$^{11}$B) was investigated by transverse field muon spin rotation. No boron isotope effect on the penetration depth $\lambda(0)$ was found within experimental error: $\Delta\lambda(0)/\lambda(0) = -0.8(8)%$, suggesting that MgB$_{2}$ is an adiabatic superconductor. This is in contrast to the substantial oxygen isotope effect on $\lambda(0)$ observed in cuprate high-temperature superconductors., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, 1 table

We present a study of the vortex lattice in untwinned YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-x}$ crystals, using a combination of muon spin rotation and neutron small angle scattering measurements. Both methods show a very sharp melting temperature consistent with a first order transition. The dependence of the melting temperature on the angle of the field with respect to the crystallographic c-axis is studied. We discuss the properties of new superconducting compositions of Ru(1-x)Sr2RECu(2+x)O(8-d) (RE=Gd, Eu) ruthenocuprates that were synthesized at 600 atm. of oxygen at 1080 C. By changing ratio between the Ru and Cu, the temperature of superconducting transition (Tc) raises up to Tc max=72 K for x=0.3, 0.4. The hole doping achieved along the series increases with Cu->Ru substitution. For x different than x=0, Tc can be subsequently tuned between Tc max and 0 K by changing oxygen content in the compounds. The magnetic characteristics of the RE=Gd and Eu based compounds are interpreted as indicative of constrained dimensionality of the superconducting phase. Muon spin rotation experiments reveal the presence of the magnetic transitions at low temperatures (Tm=14-2 K for x=0.1-0.4) that can originate in the response of Ru/Cu sublattices. RuSr2Gd(1-y)Ce(1-y)Cu2O8 (0Gd substitution. Properties of these two series allow us to propose phase diagram for 1212-type ruthenocuprates that links their properties to the hole doping achieved in the systems. The oxygen-isotope (^16O/^18O) effect (OIE) on the in-plane penetration depth $\lambda_{ab} (0)$ in underdoped Y_{1-x}Pr_xBa_2Cu_3O_{7-delta} was studied by muon-spin rotation. A pronounced OIE on $\lambda_{ab}^{-2}(0)$ was observed with a relative isotope shift of $\Delta\lambda^{-2}_{ab}/\lambda^{-2}_{ab}$=-5(2)% for x =0.3 and -9(2)% for x=0.4. It arises mainly from the oxygen-mass dependence of the in-plane effective mass $m_{ab}^{\ast}$. Synthesis in 1% oxygen at 930C leads to non-superconducting RuSr2GdCu2O8 in which superconductivity subsequently can be induced with oxygen annealings without observable stoichiometric changes. Detailed ac susceptibility and zero-field muon spin rotation experiments reveal that the superconducting compounds always exhibit a lower temperature of the magnetic transition and larger values of the internal magnetic field in the ordered state of the Ru sublattice. The same annealings in oxygen, however, lead to non-superconducting RuSr2EuCu2O8. The magnetic properties of a newly discovered series of Ru1-xSr2GdCu2+xO8-y superconductors (maximum Tc=72 K for x=0.4) are reported. Low temperature behavior of the magnetization shows a significant contribution of the paramagnetic system of Gd ions to the magnetic response below the superconducting transition. Muon-spin rotation experiments reveal the presence of bulk magnetic transitions at low temperature for compounds with x<=0.4.
