Abstract

Background and Objectives: The European Medicine Agency extended the use of Comirnaty, Spikevax, and Nuvaxovid in paediatrics; thus, these vaccines require additional real-world safety evidence. Herein, we aimed to monitor the safety of COVID-19 vaccines through Covid-19 Vaccine Monitor (CVM) and EudraVigilance surveillance systems and the published pivotal clinical trials. Methods: In a prospective cohort of vaccinees aged between 5 and 17 years, we measured the frequency of commonly reported (local/systemic solicited) and serious adverse drug events (ADRs) following the first and second doses of COVID-19 vaccines in Europe using data from the CVM cohort until April 2022. The results of previous pivotal clinical trials and data in the EudraVigilance were also analysed. Results: The CVM study enrolled 658 first-dose vaccinees (children aged 5–11 years; n = 250 and adolescents aged 12–17 years; n = 408). Local/systemic solicited ADRs were common, whereas serious ADRs were uncommon. Among Comirnaty first and second dose recipients, 28.8% and 17.1% of children and 54.2% and 52.2% of adolescents experienced at least one ADR, respectively; injection-site pain (29.2% and 20.7%), fatigue (16.1% and 12.8%), and headache (22.1% and 19.3%) were the most frequent local and systemic ADRs. Results were consistent but slightly lower than in pivotal clinical trials. Reporting rates in Eudravigilance were lower by a factor of 1000. Conclusions: The CVM study showed high frequencies of local solicited reactions after vaccination but lower rates than in pivotal clinical trials. Injection-site pain, fatigue, and headache were the most commonly reported ADRs for clinical trials, but higher than spontaneously reported data.

Abstract

To date, four vaccines have been authorised for emergency use and under conditional approval by the European Medicines Agency to prevent COVID-19: Comirnaty, COVID-19 Vaccine Janssen, Spikevax (previously COVID-19 Vaccine Moderna) and Vaxzevria (previously COVID-19 Vaccine AstraZeneca). Although the benefit–risk profile of these vaccines was proven to be largely favourable in the general population, evidence in special cohorts initially excluded from the pivotal trials, such as pregnant and breastfeeding women, children/adolescents, immunocompromised people and persons with a history of allergy or previous SARS-CoV-2 infection, is still limited. In this narrative review, we critically overview pre- and post-marketing evidence on the potential benefits and risks of marketed COVID-19 vaccines in the above-mentioned special cohorts. In addition, we summarise the recommendations of the scientific societies and regulatory agencies about COVID-19 primary prevention in the same vaccinee categories. Abstract

The European Non‐native Species in Aquaculture Risk Analysis Scheme (ENSARS) was developed in response to European ‘Council Regulation No. 708/2007 of 11 June 2007 concerning use of alien and locally absent species in aquaculture’ to provide protocols for identifying and evaluating the potential risks of using non‐native species in aquaculture. ENSARS is modular in structure and adapted from non‐native species risk assessment schemes developed by the European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organisation and for the UK. Seven of the eight ENSARS modules contain protocols for evaluating the risks of escape, introduction to and establishment in open waters, of any non‐native aquatic organism being used (or associated with those used) in aquaculture, that is, transport pathways, rearing facilities, infectious agents, and the potential organism, ecosystem and socio‐economic impacts. A concluding module is designed to summarise the risks and consider management options. During the assessments, each question requires the assessor to provide a response and confidence ranking for that response based on expert opinion. Each module can also be used individually, and each requires a specific form of expertise. Therefore, a multidisciplinary assessment team is recommended for its completion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In the summer of 2011, the infralittoral fringe of Linosa Island (Sicilian Channel, Italy) was surveyed through visual census, by both scuba diving and snorkelling, with the aim of collecting updated data on marine alien species distribution and abundance on the island. Surveys revealed the presence ofPinctada imbricata radiata, an invasive alien bivalve of Indo-Pacific origin, first recorded in the Mediterranean Sea at the end of the 19th century in Egyptian waters. Since then, the species has successfully spread throughout the Mediterranean, systematically colonizing new habitats of the eastern basin and becoming very abundant in the Levantine Sea. Conversely, occurrences in the western basin have been reported only sporadically. Many studies have been carried out onP. imbricata radiatain its native range (Indian Ocean and Red Sea) while the Mediterranean populations have been investigated only in Tunisia. The finding ofP. imbricata radiataaround Linosa Island (Sicilian Channel, Italy) is discussed analysing the biometric features of the species and taking into consideration its ecological characteristics and possible pathways of introduction in the Marine Protected Area of Linosa Island. Abstract

Rapana venosa (Valenciennes, 1846; Gastropoda, Muricidae), `Rapa whelk', is a predator of bivalves, native to the Japanese seas. It has been reported in the Northern Adriatic Sea since 1973. Recently, its biogeographical distribution has been widening (probably favoured by ship traffic) including the Atlantic coasts of the USA, Argentina and France, where the species colonised transition zones, such as estuaries or lagoons, economically important for shellfish harvesting. This work investigates the population structure of the Rapa whelk (size classes distribution, sex ratio) in Cesenatico (Emilia-Romagna coast), where local fishermen have been recently observing increasing numbers of Rapana in their by-catches. During summer 2001, analyses were performed on sexually mature adult specimens obtained from sandy bottoms and artificial rocky breakwaters. Male and female individuals were reported in approximately equal numbers with a minimum shell length of 67.0 and a maximum of 136.7 mm. Rapana collected on breakwaters were significantly larger and heavier than Rapana from sand substratum (ANOVA, P < 0.05). Sand shells and rock (breakwater) shells differed also in colour and epibiont cover. The role of man-made hard structures such as breakwaters in maintaining and promoting a further expansion of R. venosa is discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

33. Experience in awake glioma surgery in a South American center. Correlation between intraoperative evaluation, extent of resection and functional outcomes.

Abstract

Introduction: Gliomas are the second most frequent primary brain tumors. Surgical resection remains a crucial part of treatment, as well as maximum preservation of neurological function. For this reason awake surgery has an important role.The objectives of this article are to present our experience with awake surgery for gliomas in a South American center and to analyze how intraoperative functional findings may influence the extent of resection and neurological outcomes., Materials and Methods: Retrospective single center study of a cohort of adult patients undergoing awake surgery for brain glioma, by the same neurosurgeon, between 2012 and 2022 in the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina., Results: A total of 71 patients were included (mean age 34 years, 62% males). Seventy seven percent of tumors were low grade, with average extent of resection reaching 94% of preoperative volumetric assessment. At six months follow up, 81.7% of patients presented no motor or language deficit.Further analysis showed that having a positive mapping did not have a negative impact in the extent of resection, but was associated with short term postoperative motor and language deficits, among other variables, with later improvement., Conclusion: Awake surgery for gliomas is a safe procedure, with the proper training. 34. An Improvement in the Antimicrobial Resistance Patterns of Urinary Isolates in the Out-Of-Hospital Setting following Decreased Community Use of Antibiotics during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Abstract

After the onset of COVID-19 pandemic, a decrease in antibiotic consumption in the out-of-hospital setting was observed. However, data about the impact of this reduction on antimicrobial resistance are lacking. The aim of this study was to assess antibiotic consumption and antibiotic resistance at the community level in an Italian province before and after the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. We carried out an observational study, comparing antibiotic consumption in the community during 2019 and 2020 and the antibiotic resistance patterns of Enterobacterales cultured from urine samples from the out-of-hospital setting during the first semester of 2020 and 2021. Overall, antibiotic consumption decreased by 28% from 2019 to 2020 (from 13.9 to 9.97 DDD/1000 inhabitants/day). The main reductions involved penicillins (ATC J01C, from 6.9 to 4.8 DDD/1000 inhabitants/day, −31%), particularly amoxicillin/clavulanate (ATC J01CR02, −30%) and amoxicillin (J01CA04, −35.2%). Overall, 6445 strains of Enterobacterales were analyzed; in 2020, the susceptibility rate of amoxicillin/clavulanate increased from 57.5% to 87% among isolates from the primary care setting (p < 0.001) and from 39% to 72% (p < 0.001) among isolates from LTCF. The reduction in the community use of antibiotics observed in 2020 was followed by a change in the antimicrobial resistance patterns of urinary isolates.

36. In vitro evaluation of nematophagous activity of fungal isolates.

Abstract

Four filamentous fungi associated with nematodes were isolated and identified from litter samples collected in the Integral Natural Reserve "Bosco Siro Negri" (PV, Italy): Arthrobotrys dactyloides, Arthrobotrys oligospora var. oligospora, Pochonia bulbillosa, and Pochonia chlamydosporia var. catenulata. Their capacity to break down the nematode population was evaluated in vitro by means of simple and reproducible multiwell plates method. All fungal strains were able to cause a death-rate significantly different from the controls (p < 0.05). Precisely, A. dactyloides caused, on average, a 26% death rate increase in the nematode population compared to the control, A. oligospora var. oligospora 25%, P. bulbillosa 12%, and P. chlamidosporia var. catenulata 17%. The method has also allowed to determine the more active fungi as regards the prey's life cycle stage. The most active strains against nematodes (adults) were A. dactyloides and A. oligospora var. oligospora, known to attack adults or larval stages by means of tridimensional traps. On the contrary P. bulbillosa and P. chlamydosporia, known to attack mainly the nematode life stage of cysts, showed lower activity against adult nematodes., (© 2014 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Abstract

This paper proposes a set of web-based indicators for quantifying and ranking the relevance of terms related to key-issues in Ecology and Sustainability Science. Search engines that operate in different contexts (e.g. global, social, scientific) are considered as web information carriers (WICs) and are able to analyse; (i) relevance on different levels: global web, individual/personal sphere, on-line news, and culture/science; (ii) time trends of relevance; (iii) relevance of keywords for environmental governance. For the purposes of this study, several indicators and specific indices (relational indices and dynamic indices) were applied to a test-set of 24 keywords. Outputs consistently show that traditional study topics in environmental sciences such as water and air have remained the most quantitatively relevant keywords, while interest in systemic issues (i.e. ecosystem and landscape) has grown over the last 20 years. Nowadays, the relevance of new concepts such as resilience and ecosystem services is increasing, but the actual ability of these concepts to influence environmental governance needs to be further studied and understood. Abstract

Soft bottom macrobenthos at a station located off Cesenatico (Emilia Romagna, Northern Adriatic Sea) was investigated seasonally for six years from July 1996 to July 2002. Species composition and abundance of the community have been studied in relation to fluctuation in the water environment parameters, sediment texture patterns and mucilage, that occurred mainly in the water column at the study site. Three major Po river flow peaks occurred in November 1996, October 2000 and May 2002; after these events the community was reduced to minimum abundance values (total density<2000 individuals m(-2)). In the period between the first two episodes the river discharge remained rather low and conditions of increased salinity, lower nutrients and chl a and good oxygen saturation were experienced. The fossorial Crustacean Ampelisca diadema became dominant in the community between the first two river flow events, reaching maximum density of 10,200 individuals m(-2) and substituting the bivalve Corbula gibba, indicator of sediment instability. Species richness increased in the same period. The role of Ampelisca as a facilitator in structuring the community is discussed. Corbula gibba never recovered to initial densities, apart from an abundance peak that occurred in the summer of 2000. Faunal composition seemed to evolve slowly towards a higher degree of structural complexity (positive trend in diversity and evenness index). In the study site near-bottom mucilage events occurred in the summers of 1997, 1998, 2002; they appeared uncorrelated with the observed changes in the community structure. Multivariate analysis of community structure (MDS, ANOSIM) illustrates that community changes in this station are driven mainly by hydrographical conditions influencing sediment texture patterns and trophic resources for the benthos.
