Abstract

The Var prodelta progrades across a straight, narrow shelf (less than 2 km wide) with a very steep continental slope reaching locally more than 30°. Historically, the Var delta front is sadly famous for the 1979 catastrophic submarine landslide that resulted in several casualties and infrastructural damage. Geotechnical and geophysical investigations carried out in late 2007 to the east of the 1979 landslide scar provide evidence for the possible occurrence of a new important sedimentary collapse and submarine landslide. Geophysical data acquired in the area show the presence of several seafloor morphological steps rooted to shallow subsurface seismic reflections. Moreover, in situ piezocone measurements demonstrate the presence of several shear zones at the border of the shelf break at different depths below the seafloor. The aim of this technical note is to present and discuss acquired geotechnical and geophysical data in terms of failure mechanisms and submarine landslides. Both geophysical and geotechnical data suggest the start-up of a progressive failure mechanism and reveal the possible occurrence of a submarine landslide and the urgent need for mitigation procedures. Le systeme prodelta'ique du Var prograde directement sur une plateforme etroite (inferieure a 2 km de large) jusqu'a une pente continentale abrupte, superieure a 30° localement. Historiquement, le delta du Var est malheureusement celebre pour la catastrophe de 1979 provoquee par un glissement sous-marin ayant entraine des victimes et des dommages materiels. Les explorations geotechniques et geophysiques menees fin 2007 dans la partie orientale de la cicatrice du glissement de 1979 temoignent de la forte probabilite que des effondrements seedimentaires a venir provoquent a nouveau des glissements sous-marins. Les donnees geophysiques acquises sur la zone montrent l'existence de plusieurs terrasses morphologiques sur le fond de la mer connectees en profondeur a des surfaces sismiques superficielles. De plus, les mesures in-situ des piezocones demontrent la presence de plusieurs zones de cisaillement en rebord de plateau a plusieurs profondeurs sous le fond de la mer. L'objectif de cette note est de presenter et discuter les donnees geotechniques et geophysiques acquises en relation avec les mecanismes de rupture et de glissement sous-marin. L'ensemble de ces donnees met en evidence l'initiation d'un processus progressif de rupture qui pourrait etre a l'origine d'un possible glissement sous-marin; il revele l'urgente necessite de mettre en place des procedures pour la reduction des risques. Abstract

Flood-generated turbidity currents represent an important process of marine sedimentation. However, no deposit related to this process has yet been described at sea. Turbiditic sequences cored at 2000 m water depth in the Mediterranean show tractive structures and superposition of reverse and normal grading. They are related to floods triggered during the twentieth century. Deposits from flood-generated turbidity currents have a great impact on the interpretation of deep-ocean paleoclimate records obtained near continental margins by linking deep-marine sedimentary records to continental climatic changes through flood frequency and magnitude. Implications of this study should help redefine the reservoir character of oil fields in fine-grained turbidites. Abstract

Ce rapport présente l'étude d'impact d'un programme de réhabilitation urbaine dans un quartier pauvre de la ville de Djibouti. Ce projet intégré comprend la construction et l'aménagement de voies, la mise en place d'équipements collectifs et un accompagnement social. L'impact est estimé par deux méthodes en double différence, l'une qui compare la zone du projet à une zone témoin, l'autre, les individus et les ménages à l'intérieur de la zone du projet, selon le degré de désenclavement dont ils ont bénéficié grâce au projet. Nous montrons que le projet a eu, moins d'un an après son achèvement, un impact non négligeable sur la régularisation des titres de propriété. En revanche, aucun impact n'est observable sur l'investissement des ménages dans leur habitat ni sur leur perception de la valeur de leur parcelle. Le projet n'a pas eu d'impact sur l'offre de travail, contrairement aux attentes, mais il a tout de même permis l'émergence d'activités indépendantes. La santé des enfants n'a pas non plus été impactée par le projet. Enfin, le Projet de développement urbain intégré de Balbala (PDUI) a engendré un effet d'éviction à proximité des nouvelles routes, de ménages plus pauvres par des ménages sensiblement plus aisés.

Abstract

International audience; We investigate the active seismogenic fault system in the area of the 2003 Mw 6.9 Boumerdes earthquake, Algeria, from a high-resolution swath bathymetry and seismic survey. A series of 5 main fault-propagation folds ∼20–35 km long leave prominent cumulative escarpments on the steep slope and in the deep basin. Fault activity creates Plio-Quaternary growth strata within uplifted areas such as a rollover basin on the slope and piggyback basins in the deep ocean. Most thrusts turn to fault-propagation folds at the sub-surface and depict ramp-flat trajectories. We find that the two main slip patches of the 2003 Mw 6.9 Boumerdes earthquake are spatially correlated to two segmented cumulative scarps recognized on the slope and at the foot of the margin. The overall geometry indicates the predominance of back thrusts implying underthrusting of the Neogene oceanic crust.

Abstract

This paper is focused on the seismic stratigraphy of the Culf of Lions continental shelf and slope, off the present Rhone Delta. A low resolution multichannel seismic profile allows to divide the Plio-Quaternary section in 10 seismic units (S9-Sf0) bounded by unconformities. The Plio-Quaternary boundary has been tentatively correlated on this profile from oil-exploration wells drilled near the study area. High-resolution seismic profiles allows a more detailed analysis of the uppermost part of the sedimentary section. The continental shelf section is divided into 6 major units (A-F) bounded by unconformities. ■ These units are Quaternary in age and correlate with units 5? and S,0 on multichannel seismic records. Units B-F shows a wedge shaped geometry and reach a maximum thickness at the shelf edge. These wedge-shaped seismic units are traced onto the slope in an intercanyon area. Detailed analysis of the seismic facies on the slope shows that the sedimentary series defines cycles. Each basic cycle is composed of a couplet of two different sub-units: a lower mostly transparent sub-unit which correlates with a wedge shaped seismic unit on the shelf, and an upper mosdy layered seismic unit on the slope which correlates with an erosiona/ unconformity on the shelf. Abstract

The evaluation of the first year of intensive scientific use of the French deep sea Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) "VICTOR 6000" is presented.VICTOR was used in 2001 during five cruises on continental margins. ZAIROV 1 & 2, BIOZAIRE 1 & 2 cruises were conducted offshore Western Africa and CARACOLE cruise along the North East Atlantic margins (Porcupine and Rockall bank). Cold seep settings (up to 3000m depth), coral mounds (400-1000m), oil exploration rigs (1300m) and the Zaire channel (about 4000m) were explored. VICTOR carried out on site work during two cruises (IRIS & ATOS) on the hydrothermal vent areas in the Mid Atlantic Ridge (Menez Gwen 850m, Lucky Strike 1650m and Rainbow 2350m). Finally, VICTOR was used by Alfred Wegener Institute, through a French-German co-operation in arctic deep sea, to study high diversity of species in the deep sea, in high latitude (AWI leg).Different strategies were tested during those cruises like survey and exploration or experimental work on small areas. The dives duration ranged between 8 to 28 hours on the bottom. The high potential of Victor was confirmed in both strategies with a high ability for manipulation and the trials of varied instrumentation. The status and recent evolutions of the VICTOR 6000 are presented showing the essential role of a dynamic technical support oriented toward the satisfaction of the scientific objectives and operability.

Abstract

The Petit-Rhône Fan Valley (north-western Mediterranean) is a broad, sinuous filled valley that is deeply incised by a narrow, sinuous thalweg. The valley fill is differentiated into three seismic subunits on high-resolution seismic-reflection profiles. The lower chaotic subunit probably consists of channel lag deposits that seem to be in lateral continuity with high-amplitude reflections representing levee facies. The intermediate transparent subunit, which has an erosional base and clearly truncates levee deposits, is interpreted to be mass-flow deposits resulting from the disintegration of the fan-valley flanks. The upper bedded subunit shows an overall lens-shaped geometry and the seismic reflections onlap either onto the top of the underlying transparent subunit or onto the Rhône levees. Piston core data show that the upper few meters of this upper subunit consist of thin turbidites, probably deposited by overflow processes. The few available [SUP14]C ages suggest that the upper stratified subunit filled the Petit-Rhône Fan Valley between 21 and 11 kyr BP. The upper bedded subunit is deposited within the Petit-Rhône Fan Valley downslope of a major decrease in slope gradient. This upper subunit and the thalweg are genetically related and represents a small/levee system confined within the fan valley. Previous studies interpreted this thalweg to be an erosional feature resulting from a recent avulsion of the major channel course. Our interpretation implies that the thalweg is not a purely erosional feature but a depositional/erosional channel. This small channel/levee system is superimposed on a large muddy channel/levee system after the sediment supply changed from thick muddy flows during the main phase of aggradation of the Rhône Fan levees, to thin, mixed (sand and mud) flows at the end of Isotope Stage 2(≈ 16-18 ka BP).
