In an oxidizing environment, the oxide formed on plutonium (Pu) metal is composed of a plutonium dioxide (PuO2) top layer and a thin cubic plutonium sesquioxide (Pu2O3) middle layer. In a reducing environment, the PuO2 layer auto-reduces to cubic Pu2O3. The speed and extent of this conversion depend on the combination of temperature and time. While PuO2 provides a strong diffusion barrier against unwanted Pu corrosion by gaseous species (like hydrogen), Pu2O3 does not, since its crystal structure has chains of oxygen vacancies. The kinetics of the PuO2 reduction are, therefore, of fundamental interest and enable researchers to better protect Pu from corrosion. In this report, the oxygen-diffusion-limited kinetics of the dioxide to sesquioxide conversion were obtained by dynamically heating a PuO2-covered Pu sample from 294 to 418 K in a high-vacuum vessel equipped with an in situ spectroscopic ellipsometer. The physical/chemical constraints in the conversion process were combined with the ellipsometry method of multi-sample analysis to track the percentage of PuO2 and to compute the extent of Pu2O3 formation. The resulting diffusion coefficients were compared against and then combined with complementary literature data to produce a comprehensive set of kinetic parameters for reliably modeling oxide conversion over a larger temperature range than spanned by prior studies. The extracted thermal activation energy barrier (43.7 kJ/mol) and pre-exponential factor (5.0 × 10−10 cm2/s) for the oxygen-diffusion-limited process can be used to accurately model the PuO2 to Pu2O3 transformation in vacuum and/or inert gas applications. Spectroscopic ellipsometry is combined with scanning electron microscopy and multisample analysis of the measured oxide thickness difference from one sample at two different times during the oxide growth phase or from two separate samples to obtain the optical constants of the oxides. With the obtained thickness and optical constants of the oxides, the optical properties of the substrate material can be uniquely deduced. This methodology has been applied to obtain, the refractive indices and extinction coefficients of delta plutonium (δ-Pu) metal with 0.5 wt. % Ga in the wavelength region from 435 nm to 850 nm, without the influence of surface oxides. The presented methodology can also be applied to metals and semiconductors from surface oxidized samples, even when the oxides do not possess a common set of optical characteristics. B12P2 was grown epitaxially on (0001) 4H-SiC using two different substrate miscuts: a standard 4° miscut toward the [112̅0] and a custom miscut 4° toward the [11̅00]. Epitaxy on substrates miscut to the [112̅0] resulted in highly twinned B12P2 films with a rotational twin density of approximately 70% twin orientation I and 30% twin orientation II. In contrast, epitaxy on substrates tilted toward the [11̅00] produced films of >99% twin orientation I. A H2 etch model is used to explain the 4H-SiC surface morphology for each miscut prior to epitaxy and demonstrate how the surface steps influence the nucleation of B12P2 twin orientations. Surface steps on substrates miscut to the [112̅0] tend to be zig-zagged with steps rotated 60° from one another producing B12P2 crystals that nucleate in orientations rotated by 60°, hence forming rotationally twinned films. Steps on substrates tilted to the [11̅00] tend to be parallel resulting in crystallographically aligned B12P2 nucleation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An iron-based amorphous metal with good corrosion resistance and a high absorption cross section for thermal neutrons has been developed and is reported here. This amorphous alloy has the approximate formula Fe49.7Cr17.7Mn1.91Vlo7.4W1.6B15.2C3.8Si2.4 and is known as and is known as SAM2X5. Chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten were added to provide corrosion resistance, while boron was added to promote glass formation and the absorption of thermal neutrons. Since this amorphous metal has a higher boron content than conventional borated stainless steels, it provides the nuclear engineer with design advantages for criticality control structures with enhanced safety. While melt-spun ribbons with limited practical applications were initially produced, large quantities (several tons) of gas-atomized powder have now been produced on an industrial scale, and applied as thermal-spray coatings on prototypical half-scale spent-nuclear-fuel containers and neutron-absorbing baskets. These prototypes and other SAM2X5 samples have undergone a variety of corrosion testing, including both salt-fog and long-term immersion testing. Modes and rates of corrosion have been determined in various relevant environments and are reported here. While these coatings have less corrosion resistance than melt-spun ribbons and optimized coatings produced in the laboratory, substantial corrosion resistance has been achieved. An iron-based amorphous metal, Fe49.7Cr17.7Mn1.9Mo7.4W1.6B15.2C3.8Si2.4 (SAM2X5), with very good corrosion resistance has been developed. This material was prepared as a melt-spun ribbon, as well as gas atomized powder and a thermal-spray coating. During electrochemical testing in several environments, including seawater at 90 °C, the passive film stability was found to be comparable to that of high-performance nickel-based alloys and superior to that of stainless steels, based on electrochemical measurements of the passive film breakdown potential and general corrosion rates. This material also performed very well in standard salt fog tests. Chromium (Cr), molybdenum (Mo), and tungsten (W) provided corrosion resistance, and boron (B) enabled glass formation. The high boron content of this particular amorphous metal made it an effective neutron absorber and suitable for criticality control applications. This material and its parent alloy maintained corrosion resistance up to the glass transition temperature and remained in the amorphous state during exposure to relatively high neutron doses. We investigate the laser-induced damage performance of KD(2-chi)H(chi)PO(4) crystals following exposure to X-ray irradiation. Two important issues addressed by our study are i) the performance of the material when operational conditions lead to its exposure to ionizing irradiation and ii) the way the radiation-induced transient defects interact with the pre-existing precursor defects responsible for laser-induced damage. Our results indicate that the damage performance of the material is affected by exposure to X-rays. This behavior is attributed to a change in the physical properties of the precursors which, in turn, affect their ability to initiate damage following interaction with X-ray generated defects.
