Predator prey interactions are one of ecology's central research themes, but with many interdisciplinary implications across the social and natural sciences. Here we consider an often-overlooked species in these interactions, namely parasites. We first show that a simple predator prey parasite model, inspired by the classical Lotka Volterra equations, fails to produce a stable coexistence of all three species, thus failing to provide a biologically realistic outcome. To improve this, we introduce free space as a relevant eco-evolutionary component in a new mathematical model that uses a game-theoretical payoff matrix to describe a more realistic setup. We then show that the consideration of free space stabilizes the dynamics by means of cyclic dominance that emerges between the three species. We determine the parameter regions of coexistence as well as the types of bifurcations leading to it by means of analytical derivations as well as by means of numerical simulations. We conclude that the consideration of free space as a finite resource reveals the limits of biodiversity in predator prey parasite interactions, and it may also help us in the determination of factors that promote a healthy biota., 14 pages, 6 figures, Supplementary material related to this article can be found online at https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jtbi.2023.111446

With synchronization being one of nature's most ubiquitous collective behaviors, the field of network synchronization has experienced tremendous growth, leading to significant theoretical developments. However, most of these previous studies consider uniform connection weights and undirected networks with positive coupling. In the present article, we incorporate the asymmetry in a two-layer multiplex network by assigning the ratio of the adjacent nodes' degrees as the weights to the intralayer edges. Despite the presence of degree-biased weighting mechanism and attractive-repulsive coupling strengths, we are able to find the necessary conditions for intralayer synchronization and interlayer antisynchronization and test whether these two macroscopic states can withstand demultiplexing in a network. During the occurrence of these two states, we analytically calculate the oscillator's amplitude. In addition to deriving the local stability conditions for interlayer antisynchronization via the master stability function approach, we also construct a suitable Lyapunov function to determine a sufficient condition for global stability. We provide numerical evidence to show the necessity of negative interlayer coupling strength for the occurrence of antisynchronization, and such repulsive interlayer coupling coefficients can not destroy intralayer synchronization., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures (Accepted for publication in the journal Physical Review E)

In this paper, the existence (invariance) and stability (locally and globally) of relay interlayer synchronisation (RIS) are investigated in a chain of multiplex networks. The local dynamics of the nodes in the symmetric positions layers on both sides of the non-identical middlemost layer(s) are identical. The local and global stability conditions for this synchronisation state are analytically derived based on the master stability function approach and by constructing a suitable Lyapunov function, respectively. We propose an appropriate demultiplexing process for the existence of the RIS state. Then the variational equation transverse to the RIS manifold for demultiplexed networks is derived. In numerical simulations, the impact of interlayer and intralayer coupling strengths, variations of the system parameter in the relay layers and demultiplexing on the emergence of RIS in triplex and pentaplex networks are explored. Interestingly, in this multiplex network, enhancement of RIS is observed when a type of impurity via parameter mismatch in the local dynamics of the nodes is introduced in the middlemost layer. A common time-lag with small amplitude shift between the symmetric positions and central layers plays an important role for the enhancing of relay interlayer synchrony. This analysis improves our understanding of synchronisation states in multiplex networks with nonidentical layers.

The persistence of biodiversity of species is a challenging proposition in ecological communities in the face of Darwinian selection. The present article investigates beyond the pairwise competitive interactions and provides a novel perspective for understanding the influence of higher-order interactions on the evolution of social phenotypes. Our simple model yields a prosperous outlook to demonstrate the impact of perturbations on intransitive competitive higher-order interactions. Using a mathematical technique, we show how alone the perturbed interaction network can quickly determine the coexistence equilibrium of competing species instead of solving a large system of ordinary differential equations. It is possible to split the system into multiple feasible cluster states depending on the number of perturbations. Our analysis also reveals the ratio between the unperturbed and perturbed species is inversely proportional to the amount of employed perturbation. Our results suggest that nonlinear dynamical systems and interaction topologies can be interplayed to comprehend species' coexistence under adverse conditions. Swarmalators are entities with the simultaneous presence of swarming and synchronization that reveal emergent collective behavior due to the fascinating bidirectional interplay between phase and spatial dynamics. Although different coupling topologies have already been considered, here we introduce time-varying competitive phase interaction among swarmalators where the underlying connectivity for attractive and repulsive coupling varies depending on the vision (sensing) radius. Apart from investigating some fundamental properties like conservation of center of position and collision avoidance, we also scrutinize the cases of extreme limits of vision radius. The concurrence of attractive-repulsive competitive phase coupling allows the exploration of diverse asymptotic states, like static $\pi$, and mixed phase wave states, and we explore the feasible routes of those states through a detailed numerical analysis. In sole presence of attractive local coupling, we reveal the occurrence of static cluster synchronization where the number of clusters depends crucially on the initial distribution of positions and phases of each swarmalator. In addition, we analytically calculate the sufficient condition for the emergence of the static synchronization state. We further report the appearance of the static ring phase wave state and evaluate its radius theoretically. Localization of hidden attractors is one of the most challenging tasks in the nonlinear dynamics due to deficiency of properly justified analytical and numerical procedures. But understanding about the emergence of such unexpected occurrence of hidden attractors is desirable, because that can help to diminish the unexpected switch from one attractor to another undesired behavior. We propose a novel autonomous three-dimensional system exhibiting hidden attractor. These attractors can not be tracked using perpetual points. The reason behind this inefficiency is explained using theory of differential equations. Our system consists a slow manifold depicted through the time-series, although the system has no equilibrium points or such multiplicative parameters. We also discuss the behavior of the attractor using time-series analysis, bifurcation theory, Lyapunov spectrum and Kaplan-Yorke dimension. Moreover, the attractor no longer exists for a range of parameter values due to sudden change of strange attractors indicating a possible inverse crisis route to chaos.

Extreme events gain the attention of researchers due to their utmost importance in various contexts ranging from finance to climatology. This brings such recurrent events to the limelight of attention in interdisciplinary research. A comprehensive review of recent progress is provided to capture recent improvements in analyzing such very high-amplitude events from the point of view of dynamical systems and random walkers. We emphasize, in detail, the mechanisms responsible for the emergence of such events in complex systems. Several mechanisms that contribute to the occurrence of extreme events have been elaborated that investigate the sources of instabilities leading to them. In addition, we discuss the prediction of extreme events from two different contexts, using dynamical instabilities and data-based machine learning algorithms. Tracking of instabilities in the phase space is not always feasible and precise knowledge of the dynamics of extreme events does not necessarily help in forecasting extreme events. Moreover, in most studies on high-dimensional systems, only a few degrees of freedom participate in extreme events' formation. Thus, the notable inclusion of prediction through machine learning is of enormous significance, particularly for those cases where the governing equations of the model are explicitly unavailable. Besides, random walks on complex networks can represent several transport processes, and exceedances of the flux of walkers above a prescribed threshold may describe extreme events. We unveil the theoretical studies on random walkers with their enormous potential for applications in reducing extreme events. The concurrence of ecological and evolutionary processes often arises as an integral part of various biological and social systems. We here study eco-evolutionary dynamics by adopting two paradigmatic metaphors of social dilemmas with contrasting outcomes. We use the Prisoner’s Dilemma and Snowdrift games as the backbone of the proposed mathematical model. Since cooperation is a costly proposition in the face of the Darwinian theory of evolution, we go beyond the traditional framework by introducing punishment as an additional strategy. Punishers bare an additional cost from their own resources to try and discourage or prohibit free-riding from selfish defectors. Our model also incorporates the ecological signature of free space, which has an altruistic-like impact because it allows others to replicate and potentially thrive. We show that the consideration of these factors has broad implications for better understanding the emergent complex evolutionary dynamics. In particular, we report the simultaneous presence of different subpopulations through the spontaneous emergence of cyclic dominance, and we determine various stationary points using traditional game-theoretic concepts and stability analysis.

Ecology and evolution are inherently linked, and studying a mathematical model that considers both holds promise of insightful discoveries related to the dynamics of cooperation. In the present article, we use the prisoner's dilemma (PD) game as a basis for long-term apprehension of the essential social dilemma related to cooperation among unrelated individuals. We upgrade the contemporary PD game with an inclusion of evolution-induced act of punishment as a third competing strategy in addition to the traditional cooperators and defectors. In a population structure, the abundance of ecologically-viable free space often regulates the reproductive opportunities of the constituents. Hence, additionally, we consider the availability of free space as an ecological footprint, thus arriving at a simple eco-evolutionary model, which displays fascinating complex dynamics. As possible outcomes, we report the individual dominance of cooperators and defectors as well as a plethora of mixed states, where different strategies coexist followed by maintaining the diversity in a socio-ecological framework. These states can either be steady or oscillating, whereby oscillations are sustained by cyclic dominance among different combinations of cooperators, defectors, and punishers. We also observe a novel route to cyclic dominance where cooperators, punishers, and defectors enter a coexistence via an inverse Hopf bifurcation that is followed by an inverse period doubling route.

The role of a new form of dynamic interaction is explored in a network of generic identical oscillators. The proposed design of dynamic coupling facilitates the onset of a plethora of asymptotic states including synchronous states, amplitude death states, oscillation death states, a mixed state (complete synchronized cluster and small amplitude unsynchronized domain), and bistable states (coexistence of two attractors). The dynamical transitions from the oscillatory to death state are characterized using an average temporal interaction approximation, which agrees with the numerical results in temporal interaction. A first-order phase transition behavior may change into a second-order transition in spatial dynamic interaction solely depending on the choice of initial conditions in the bistable regime. However, this possible abrupt first-order like transition is completely non-existent in the case of temporal dynamic interaction. Emerging collective behavior in complex dynamical networks depends on both coupling function and underlying coupling topology. Through this Perspective, we provide a brief yet profound excerpt of recent research efforts that explore how the synergy of attractive and repulsive interactions influence the destiny of ensembles of interacting dynamical systems. We review the incarnation of collective states ranging from chimera or solitary states to extreme events and oscillation quenching arising as a result of different network arrangements. Though the existing literature demonstrates that many of the crucial developments have been made, nonetheless, we come up with significant routes of further research in this field of study.

A series of recent publications, within the framework of network science, have focused on the coexistence of mixed attractive and repulsive (excitatory and inhibitory) interactions among the units within the same system, motivated by the analogies with spin glasses as well as to neural networks, or ecological systems. However, most of these investigations have been restricted to single layer networks, requiring further analysis of the complex dynamics and particular equilibrium states that emerge in multilayer configurations. This article investigates the synchronization properties of dynamical systems connected through multiplex architectures in the presence of attractive intralayer and repulsive interlayer connections. This setting enables the emergence of antisynchronization, i.e., intralayer synchronization coexisting with antiphase dynamics between coupled systems of different layers. We demonstrate the existence of a transition from interlayer antisynchronization to antiphase synchrony in any connected bipartite multiplex architecture when the repulsive coupling is introduced through any spanning tree of a single layer. We identify, analytically, the required graph topologies for interlayer antisynchronization and its interplay with intralayer and antiphase synchronization. Next, we analytically derive the invariance of intralayer synchronization manifold and calculate the attractor size of each oscillator exhibiting interlayer antisynchronization together with intralayer synchronization. The necessary conditions for the existence of interlayer antisynchronization along with intralayer synchronization are given and numerically validated by considering Stuart-Landau oscillators. Finally, we also analytically derive the local stability condition of the interlayer antisynchronization state using the master stability function approach.

Evolutionary game theory in the realm of network science appeals to a lot of research communities, as it constitutes a popular theoretical framework for studying the evolution of cooperation in social dilemmas. Recent research has shown that cooperation is markedly more resistant in interdependent networks, where traditional network reciprocity can be further enhanced due to various forms of interdependence between different network layers. However, the role of mobility in interdependent networks is yet to gain its well-deserved attention. Here we consider an interdependent network model, where individuals in each layer follow different evolutionary games, and where each player is considered as a mobile agent that can move locally inside its own layer to improve its fitness. Probabilistically, we also consider an imitation possibility from a neighbor on the other layer. We show that, by considering migration and stochastic imitation, further fascinating gateways to cooperation on interdependent networks can be observed. Notably, cooperation can be promoted on both layers, even if cooperation without interdependence would be improbable on one of the layers due to adverse conditions. Our results provide a rationale for engineering better social systems at the interface of networks and human decision making under testing dilemmas.

We investigate the impact of attractive-repulsive interaction in networks of limit-cycle oscillators. Mainly we focus on the design principle for generating an anti-phase state between adjacent nodes in a complex network. We establish that a partial negative control throughout the branches of a spanning tree inside the positively coupled limit-cycle oscillators works efficiently well in comparison with randomly chosen negative links to establish zero frustration (anti-phase synchronization) in bipartite graphs. Based on the emergence of zero frustration, we develop a universal 0-$\pi$ rule to understand the anti-phase synchronization in a bipartite graph. Further, this rule is used to construct a non-bipartite graph for a given non-zero frustrated value. We finally show the generality of 0-$\pi$ rule by implementing it in arbitrary undirected non-bipartite graphs of attractive-repulsively coupled limit-cycle oscillators and successfully calculate the non-zero frustration value which matches with numerical data. The validation of the rule is checked through the bifurcation analysis of small networks. Understanding and predicting uncertain things are the central themes of scientific evolution. Human beings revolve around these fears of uncertainties concerning various aspects like a global pandemic, health, finances, to name but a few. Dealing with this unavoidable part of life is far tougher due to the chaotic nature of these unpredictable activities. In the present article, we consider a global network of identical chaotic maps, which splits into two different clusters, despite the interaction between all nodes are uniform. The stability analysis of the spatially homogeneous chaotic solutions provides a critical coupling strength, before which we anticipate such partial synchronization. The distance between these two chaotic synchronized populations often deviates more than eight times of standard deviation from its long-term average. The probability density function of these highly deviated values fits well with the Generalized Extreme Value distribution. Meanwhile, the distribution of recurrence time intervals between extreme events resembles the Weibull distribution. The existing literature helps us to characterize such events as extreme events using the significant height. These extremely high fluctuations are less frequent in terms of their occurrence. We determine numerically a range of coupling strength for these extremely large but recurrent events. On-off intermittency is the responsible mechanism underlying the formation of such extreme events. Besides understanding the generation of such extreme events and their statistical signature, we furnish forecasting these events using the powerful deep learning algorithms of an artificial recurrent neural network. This Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) can offer handy one-step forecasting of these chaotic intermittent bursts. Most previous studies on coupled dynamical systems assume that all interactions between oscillators take place uniformly in time, but, in reality, this does not necessarily reflect the usual scenario. The heterogeneity in the timings of such interactions strongly influences the dynamical processes. Here, we introduce a time-evolving state-space-dependent coupling among an ensemble of identical coupled oscillators, where individual units are interacting only when the mean state of the system lies within a certain proximity of the phase space. They interact globally with mean-field diffusive coupling in a certain vicinity and behave like uncoupled oscillators with self-feedback in the remaining complementary subspace. Interestingly due to this occasional interaction, we find that the system shows an abrupt explosive transition from oscillatory to death state. Further, in the explosive death transitions, the oscillatory state and the death state coexist over a range of coupling strengths near the transition point. We explore our claim using Van der Pol, FitzHugh-Nagumo and Lorenz oscillators with dynamic mean field interaction. The dynamic interaction mechanism can explain sudden suppression of oscillations and concurrence of oscillatory and steady state in biological as well as technical systems.

Chimera state is a simultaneous combination of synchronous and asynchronous environments in a network of identical oscillators, attracts the attention of researchers in the different fields of science. Neuroscientists believe that existing both the synchronous and asynchronous behavior in the brain plays a vital role in brain neuronal activity. As a result, in this paper, we investigate the ability of a neural network to produce chimera. Our focus has been on using a discrete neuronal model which resolve the curse of dimensionality by retraining the complex behavior at the same time. Each neuron is coupled to its neighboring with limited scope. The interdependency of the spatiotemporal dynamic on the coupling strength in a fixed range made the switching process visible, which rises with the appearance of thin bands of incoherence, occupying the whole space ultimately.

Exploration of coherence phenomena in ensembles of interacting dynamical systems has been in the centre of research in social, physical, biological and technological systems for decades. But, in most of the studies, either completely percolated time- and space-static networks or temporal connectivities disregarding the systems' own dynamics have been dealt with. In this work, we examine the correlation between structural and dynamical evolution in networks of interacting dynamical systems. We specifically demonstrate the scenario of convergence of a set of chaotic attractors into a single attractor as a result of sufficient interaction based on the closeness of their own states. We characterize this occurrence through different measures, and map the collective states in network parameters' space. We further validate our proposition while exposing the whole scenario for different chaotic systems, namely Lorenz and Rossler oscillators.

Interactions amongst agents frequently exist only at particular moments in time, depending on their closeness in space and movement parameters. Here we propose a minimal model of moving agents where the network of contacts changes over time due to their motion. In particular, agents interact based on their proximity in a two-dimensional space, but only if they belong to the same fixed interaction zones. Our research reveals the emergence of global synchronization if all the interaction zones are attractive. However, if some of the interaction zones are repulsive, they deflect synchrony and lead to short-lasting but recurrent deviations that constitute extreme events in the network. We use two paradigmatic oscillators for the description of the agent dynamics to demonstrate our findings numerically, and we also provide an analytical formulation to describe the emergence of complete synchrony and the thresholds that distinguish extreme events from other intermittent states based on the peak-over-threshold approach.

Synchronization in time-varying (i.e. , dynamic) network has been explored using different types of couplings during the last two decades. In this paper, we consider a dynamic network where the spatial position of each node decides the number of nodes with which it interacts. We analytically derive the density-dependent threshold of coupling strength for synchrony using linear stability analysis and numerically verify the obtained results. We use two paradigmatic chaotic systems, namely the Rossler and Lorenz models to affirm our claims.
