The high photoluminescence efficiency, color purity, extended gamut, and solution processability make low-dimensional hybrid perovskites attractive for light-emitting diode (PeLED) applications. However, controlling the microstructure of these materials to improve the device performance remains challenging. Here, the development of highly efficient green PeLEDs based on blends of the quasi-2D (q2D) perovskite, PEA2Cs4Pb5Br16, and the wide bandgap organic semiconductor 2,7 dioctyl[1] benzothieno[3,2-b]benzothiophene (C8-BTBT) is reported. The presence of C8-BTBT enables the formation of single-crystal-like q2D PEA2Cs4Pb5Br16 domains that are uniform and highly luminescent. Combining the PEA2Cs4Pb5Br16:C8-BTBT with self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) as hole-injecting layers (HILs), yields green PeLEDs with greatly enhanced performance characteristics, including external quantum efficiency up to 18.6%, current efficiency up to 46.3 cd/A, the luminance of 45 276 cd m^-2, and improved operational stability compared to neat PeLEDs. The enhanced performance originates from multiple synergistic effects, including enhanced hole-injection enabled by the SAM HILs, the single crystal-like quality of the perovskite phase, and the reduced concentration of electronic defects. This work highlights perovskite:organic blends as promising systems for use in LEDs, while the use of SAM HILs creates new opportunities toward simpler and more stable PeLEDs.

Solution-processed, large-area, and flexible electronics largely relies on the excellent electronic properties of sp$^2$-hybridized carbon molecules, either in the form of $\pi$-conjugated small molecules and polymers or graphene and carbon nanotubes. Carbon with sp-hybridization, the foundation of the elusive allotrope carbyne, offers vast opportunities for functionalized molecules in the form of linear carbon atomic wires (CAWs), with intriguing and even superior predicted electronic properties. While CAWs represent a vibrant field of research, to date, they have only been applied sparingly to molecular devices. The recent observation of the field-effect in microcrystalline cumulenes suggests their potential applications in solution-processed thin-film transistors but concerns surrounding the stability and electronic performance have precluded developments in this direction. In the present study, ideal field-effect characteristics are demonstrated for solution-processed thin films of tetraphenyl[3]cumulene, the shortest semiconducting CAW. Films are deposited through a scalable, large-area, meniscus-coating technique, providing transistors with hole mobilities in excess of 0.1 cm$^2$ V$^{-1}$ s$^{-1}$, as well as promising operational stability under dark conditions. These results offer a solid foundation for the exploitation of a vast class of molecular semiconductors for organic electronics based on sp-hybridized carbon systems and create a previously unexplored paradigm.

Substrate engineering for steering cell growth is a wide and well-established area of research in the field of modern biotechnology. Here we introduce a micromachining technique to pattern an inert, transparent polymer matrix blended with a photoactive polymer. We demonstrate that the obtained scaffold combines the capability to align with that to photostimulate living cells. We present the galaxy power spectrum in general relativity. Using a novel approach, we derive the galaxy power spectrum taking into account all the relativistic effects in observations. In particular, we show independently of survey geometry that relativistic effects yield no divergent terms (proportional to $k^{-4}P_m(k)$ or $k^{-2}P_m(k)$ on all scales) that would mimic the signal of primordial non-Gaussianity. This cancellation of such divergent terms is indeed expected from the equivalence principle, meaning that any perturbation acting as a uniform gravity on the scale of the experiment cannot be measured. We find that the unphysical infrared divergence obtained in previous calculations occurred only due to not considering all general relativistic contributions consistently. Despite the absence of divergent terms, general relativistic effects represented by non-divergent terms alter the galaxy power spectrum at large scales (smaller than the horizon scale). In our numerical computation of the full galaxy power spectrum, we show the deviations from the standard redshift-space power spectrum due to these non-divergent corrections. We conclude that, as relativistic effects significantly alter the galaxy power spectrum at $k\lesssim k_{eq}$, they need to be taken into account in the analysis of large-scale data., Comment: 29 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in JCAP

Indacenodithiophene (IDT) based materials are emerging high performance conjugated polymers for use in efficient organic photovoltaics and transistors. However, their preparation generally suffers from long reaction sequences and is often accomplished using disadvantageous Stille couplings. Herein, we present detailed synthesis pathways to IDT homopolymers using C-H activation for all C-C coupling steps. Polyketones are first prepared by direct arylation polycondensation (DAP) in quantitative yield and further cyclized polymer analogously. This protocol is suitable for obtaining structurally well-defined IDT homopolymers, provided that the conditions for cyclization are chosen appropriately and that side reactions are suppressed. Moreover, this polymer analogous pathway gives rise to asymmetric side chain patterns, which allows to fine tune physical properties. Alternatively, IDT homopolymers can be obtained via oxidative direct arylation polycondensation of IDT monomers (oxDAP), leading to IDT homopolymers with similar properties but at reduced yield. Detailed characterization by NMR, IR, UV-vis and PL spectroscopy, and thermal properties, is used to guide synthesis and to explain varying field-effect transistor hole mobilities in the range of 10-6- 10-3 cm2/Vs.

Precise control of doping in single nanowires (NWs) is essential for the development of NW-based devices. Here, we investigate a series of MBE-grown GaAs NWs with Be (p-type) and Si (n-type) doping using high-resolution cathodoluminescence (CL) mapping at low- and room-temperature. CL spectra are analyzed selectively in different regions of the NWs. Room-temperature luminescence is fitted with the generalized Planck law and an absorption model, and the bandgap and band tail width are extracted. For Be-doped GaAs NWs, the bandgap narrowing provides a quantitative determination of the hole concentration ranging from about $1\times 10^{18}$ to $2\times 10^{19}$~cm$^{-3}$, in good agreement with the targeted doping levels. High-resolution maps of the hole concentration demonstrate the homogeneous doping in the pure zinc-blende segment. For Si-doped GaAs NWs, the electron Fermi level and the full-width at half maximum of low-temperature CL spectra are used to assess the electron concentration to approximately $3\times 10^{17}$ to $6\times 10^{17}$~cm$^{-3}$. These findings confirm the difficulty to obtain highly-doped n-type GaAs NWs, maybe due to doping compensation. Notably, signatures of high concentration (5--9$\times 10^{18}$~cm$^{-3}$) at the very top of NWs are unveiled.

Doping is a fundamental property of semiconductors and constitutes the basis of modern microelectronic and optoelectronic devices. Their miniaturization requires contactless characterization of doping with nanometer scale resolution. Here, we use low- and room-temperature cathodoluminescence (CL) measurements to analyze p-type and n-type GaAs thin films over a wide range of carrier densities ($2\times 10^{17}$ to $1\times 10^{19}$ cm$^{-3}$). The spectral shift and broadening of CL spectra induced by shallow dopant states and band filling are the signature doping. We fit the whole spectral lineshapes with the generalized Planck's law and refined absorption models to extract the bandgap narrowing (BGN) and the band tail for both doping types, and the electron Fermi level for n doping. This work provides a rigorous method for the quantitative assessment of p-type and n-type carrier density using CL. Taking advantage of the high spatial resolution of CL, it can be used to map the doping in GaAs nanostructures, and it could be extended to other semiconductor materials.

This paper focuses on two aspects of the statistics of cosmological observables that are important for the next stages of precision cosmology. First, we note that the theory of reduced angular $N$-point spectra has only been developed in detail up to the trispectrum case and in a fashion that makes it difficult to go beyond. To fill this gap, here we present a constructive approach that provides a systematic description of reduced angular $N$-point spectra and their covariance matrices, for arbitrary $N$. Second, we focus on the common practice in the literature on cosmological observables, which consists in simply discarding a part of the expression, namely, the terms containing fields evaluated at the observer position. We point out that this is not justified beyond linear order in perturbation theory, as these terms contribute to all the multipoles of the corresponding spectra and with a magnitude that is of the same order as the rest of the non-linear corrections. We consider the possibility that the reason for neglecting these terms is a conceptual discomfort when using ensemble averages, which originates in an apparent tension between the ergodic hypothesis and the privileged position of the observer on the light-cone. We clarify this subtle issue by performing a careful derivation of the relation between the theoretical statistical predictions and the observational estimators for all $N$. We conclude that there is no inconsistency whatsoever in ensemble-averaging fields at and near the observer position, thus clearing the way for consistent and robust high-precision calculations., Comment: 37 pages, published version is open access

We perform theoretical and numerical studies of the full relativistic two-point galaxy correlation function, considering the linear-order scalar and tensor perturbation contributions and the wide-angle effects. Using the gauge-invariant relativistic description of galaxy clustering and accounting for the contributions at the observer position, we demonstrate that the complete theoretical expression is devoid of any long-mode contributions from scalar or tensor perturbations and it lacks the infrared divergences in agreement with the equivalence principle. By showing that the gravitational potential contribution to the correlation function converges in the infrared, our study justifies an IR cut-off $(k_{\text{IR}} \leq H_0)$ in computing the gravitational potential contribution. Using the full gauge-invariant expression, we numerically compute the galaxy two-point correlation function and study the individual contributions in the conformal Newtonian gauge. We find that the terms at the observer position such as the coordinate lapses and the observer velocity (missing in the standard formalism) dominate over the other relativistic contributions in the conformal Newtonian gauge such as the source velocity, the gravitational potential, the integrated Sachs-Wolf effect, the Shapiro time-delay and the lensing convergence. Compared to the standard Newtonian theoretical predictions that consider only the density fluctuation and redshift-space distortions, the relativistic effects in galaxy clustering result in a few percent-level systematic errors beyond the scale of the baryonic acoustic oscillation. We present spatial and temporal distributions of dust on Mars from Ls = 331 in MY26 until Ls = 80 in MY33 retrieved from the measurements taken by the Planetary Fourier Spectrometer (PFS) aboard Mars Express. In agreement with previous observations, large dust opacity is observed mostly in the southern hemisphere spring/summer and particularly over regions of higher terrain and large topographic variation. We present a comparison with dust opacities obtained from Thermal Emission Spectrometer (TES) - Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) measurements. We found good consistency between observations of two instruments during overlapping interval (Ls = 331 in MY26 until Ls = 77 in MY27). We found a different behavior of the dust opacity with latitude in the various Martian years (inter-annual variations). A global dust storm occurred in MY28. We observe a different spatial distribution, a later occurrence and dissipation of the dust maximum activity in MY28 than in other Martian years. A possible precursor signal to the global dust storm in MY 28 is observed at Ls = 200 - 235 especially over west Hellas. Heavy dust loads alter atmospheric temperatures. Due to the absorption of solar radiation and emission of infrared radiation to space by dust vertically non-uniformly distributed, a strong heating of high atmospheric levels (40 - 50 km) and cooling below around 30 km are observed., Comment: in press in Icarus. 47 pages, 15 figures

We discuss the interpretation of the angles in the Geodesic Light-Cone (GLC) coordinates. In particular, we clarify the way in which these angles can be identified with the observed ones. We show that, although this identification is always possible in principle, one cannot implement it in the usual gauge-fixing way, i.e. through a set of conditions on the GLC metric. Rather, one needs to invoke a tetrad at the observer and a Cartesian-like coordinate system in order to obtain the desired map globally on the observed sky., Comment: 6 pages, final version accepted for publication in Classical and Quantum Gravity

Typical device architectures in polymer-based optoelectronic devices, such as field effect transistors organic light emitting diodes and photovoltaic cells include sub-100 nm semiconducting polymer thin-film active layers, whose microstructure is likely to be subject to finite-size effects. The aim of this study was to investigate effect of the two-dimensional spatial confinement on the internal structure of the semiconducting polymer poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene) (PFO). PFO melts were confined inside the cylindrical nanopores of anodic aluminium oxide (AAO) templates and crystallized via two crystallization strategies, namely, in the presence or in the absence of a surface bulk reservoir located at the template surface. We show that highly textured semiconducting nanowires with tuneable crystal orientation can be thus produced. Moreover, our results indicate that employing the appropriate crystallization conditions extended-chain crystals can be formed in confinement. The results presented here demonstrate the simple fabrication and crystal engineering of ordered arrays of PFO nanowires; a system with potential applications in devices where anisotropic optical properties are required, such as polarized electroluminescence, waveguiding, optical switching, lasing, etc.

The remarkable properties of the geodesic light-cone (GLC) coordinates allow analytic expressions for the light-cone observables, providing a new non-perturbative way for calculating the effects of inhomogeneities in our Universe. However, the gauge-invariance of these expressions in the GLC formalism has not been shown explicitly. Here we provide this missing part of the GLC formalism by proving the gauge-invariance of the GLC expressions for the light-cone observables, such as the observed redshift, the luminosity distance, and the physical area and volume of the observed sources. Our study provides a new insight on the properties of the GLC coordinates and it complements the previous work by the GLC collaboration, leading to a comprehensive description of light propagation in the GLC representation., Comment: 25 pages, no figures, published in JCAP

Comparing the luminosity distance measurements to its theoretical predictions is one of the cornerstones in establishing the modern cosmology. However, as shown in Biern & Yoo, its theoretical predictions in literature are often plagued with infrared divergences and gauge-dependences. This trend calls into question the sanity of the methods used to derive the luminosity distance. Here we critically investigate four different methods --- the geometric approach, the Sachs approach, the Jacobi mapping approach, and the geodesic light cone (GLC) approach to modeling the luminosity distance, and we present a unified treatment of such methods, facilitating the comparison among the methods and checking their sanity.
