Abstract

The aim of this paper is to investigate the intrinsic spatial resolution limit by coupling a CsI(Tl) micro-pixel scintillation array to position sensitive photomultipliers (PSPMTs) for ultra-high resolution gamma-ray imaging. On this purpose, 1 mm thick array with 0.2 mm pixel side, 0.4 mm pitch has been realized by Spectra Physics (Hilger). The present scintillation arrays technology is suitable to produce larger crystal areas. In this paper we present spatial resolution and positioning results obtained by coupling the micro-pixel scintillation array to Hamamatsu square PSPMTs: 1' R8520-C12, 1' R5900-L16 and 2' H8500 Flat panel PMT. Preliminary measurements demonstrate better performance in term of uniformity response when micro-pixel array is coupled to a H8500 PSPMT model. This setup carries out an intrinsic spatial resolution lower limit of about 0.6 mm FWHM at 50% FWHM energy resolution, defining it as the minimum scintillation array pitch detectable at 122 keV. The results obtained by R5900-L16 with a better sampling of the scintillation light has shown an improvement of the position linearity in spite of a worse spatial resolution due to the poor light output of scintillation array. Abstract

Gamma ray imaging is usually accomplished by the use of a relatively large scintillating crystal coupled to either a number of photomultipliers (PMTs) (Anger Camera) or to a single large Position Sensitive PMT (PSPMT). Recently the development of new diagnostic techniques, such as scintimammography and radio-guided surgery, have highlighted a number of significant limitations of the Anger camera in such imaging procedures. In this paper a dedicated gamma camera is proposed for clinical applications with the aim of improving image quality by utilizing detectors with an appropriate size and shape for the part of the body under examination. This novel scintillation camera is based upon an array of PSPMTs (Hamamatsu R5900-C8). The basic concept of this camera is identical to the Anger Camera with the exception of the substitution of PSPMTs for the PMTs. In this configuration it is possible to use the high resolution of the PSPMTs and still correctly position events lying between PSPMTs. In this work the test configuration is a 2 by 2 array of PSPMTs. Abstract

Prone scintimammography with Tc-99m SestaMIBI has been proposed as a method of detecting breast cancers in women with dense breasts. Clinical reports have shown that this technique lacks sensitivity for cancer smaller than 1 cm. To overcome some limitations offered by Anger camera on breast imaging was realized a new scintigraphic detector dedicated to SPEM (Single Photon Emission Mammography). This novel small FOV device, shows high spatial resolution performances (< 2 mm), but poorer energy resolution values, than Anger camera (17% vs. 10%, respectively). In this paper we examine the spatial distribution of Compton-to-photopeak ratio in planar scintimammographic images in order to elucidate the causes of lack of scintimammography in visualizing deep or posteriorly located cancers introduced by the scatter from the patient's body. Phantom and clinical studies with several instruments including a general purpose gamma camera, a dedicated camera and a non imaging Germanium detector were performed. The results obtained suggest that scatter from extramammary sources plays an important role in breast imaging with radiotracers. By using gentle breast compression in cranio-caudal view the energy resolution attained with the dedicated camera is adequate to differentiate between photopeak and Compton counts; the Compton-to photopeak mean ratio resulted 4.5 and 6.9 for mild portion and posterior breast respectively.

Abstract

We present an imaging characterization of a 10 x 10 LuYAP array (2 x 2 x 10 mm3 pixels) with an innovative dielectric coating insulation (0.015 mm thick), in view of its possible use in a gamma camera for imaging positron emission tomography (PET) or in similar applications, e.g. as γ-prompt detector in hadron therapy. The particular assembly of this array was realized in order to obtain a packing fraction of 98%, improving detection efficiency and light collection. For imaging purpose, the array has been coupled with a selected Hamamatsu H10966-100 Multi Anode Photomultiplier read out by a customized 64 independent channels electronics. This tube presents a superbialkali photocathode with 38% of quantum efficiency, permitting to enhance energy resolution and consequently image quality. A pixel identification of about 0.5 mm at 662 keV was obtained, highlighting the potentiality of this detector in PET applications., QC 20170630

Abstract

A combined SPECT-CT tomographic imager for breast cancer study is being developed as a large research program of Italian universities. The basic idea is to integrate the SPECT technique with a CT scanner in order to fuse the functional with the morphological information by using a high-resolution and compact gamma camera and a quasi-monochromatic X-ray system. These two dedicated systems will be assembled as a unique ring prototype, which will enable us to perform both the scintimammography and the X-ray tomography in the same geometrical conditions. High-intensity and tunable quasi-monochromatic X-ray beams have already been produced for mammography applications. Our aim is to investigate the use of this novel source for tomographic imaging of the breast.

Abstract

Knowledge of the Depth-Of-Interaction (DOI) in detector is crucial for small ring diameter PET scanner but it is also very important for single photon emission imaging, in particular for applications where very high spatial resolution is required and position distortions caused by slant collimators can strongly affect the final response of the 3D reconstructed image. In addition the DOI determination at 140 keV is the most critical due to thinner crystal thickness and the lower number of scintillation light photons. Continuous scintillation crystals are in principle the most suitable for continuous DOI determination based on the measurements of light width of cones generated at each gamma ray interaction. In this work we propose an analysis based on a Monte Carlo GEANT4 studies and on experimental measurements at 140 keV performed on a small LaBr3:Ce continuous crystal coupled to latest multi-anode PMT Hamamatsu H8500-MOD8 series equipped with super Bialkali photocathode (SBA). The basic idea of this work is that the high light output of LaBr3:Ce joint with SBA photodetector can reduces statistical uncertainties related to the light distribution spread determination. Furthermore it can be crucial with a more precise measurement of scintillation light distribution from the 8×8 anode array of MAPMT. Measurements and simulation confirm that light distribution spread (SD) is related to DOI, with a DOI resolution of about 2.0-2.2 mm (Monte Carlo) and 2.8-3.0 mm experimental at 140 keV. In addition, we shown how the selection in SD window provide a 10% of spatial resolution improvement, down to (0.85±0.03) mm, for a LaBr3(Ce) continuous crystal coupled to the new photodetector H8500-MOD8. This method can open the possibility to build a high-sensitivity detector with DOI capability useful for gamma-ray imaging application.

Abstract

Over the last years Nuclear Medicine and Oncology require the development of new scintigraphic imagers dedicated to particular organs and lesions, with improved performances with respect to presently available devices. In order to enhance the imaging responses, pixellated crystals have to be employed as scintillating devices coupled to position sensitive photomultiplier tubes. Some of major steps forward in this field could be obtained by using the recently produced Hamamatsu photomultiplier tubes. The knowledge of the pixel scintillation light distribution at photocathode allows the imaging performances optimization. To this aim CsI(Tl) arrays pixel light distributions were investigated by using a photographic method and a Hamamatsu multianode 16 channel linear array photomultiplier tube for single-event light output readout. Ten scintillating arrays, with square pixel base area ranging between 1.0 × 1.0 and 2.0 × 2.0 mm2 and thickness from 1.0 to 5.0 mm, were tested. In this study, the strip scintillation light distribution spread at photocathode was found linearly dependent on the total light guide thickness and crystal-pixel base side. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V.
