Scapula shape is highly variable across humans and appears to be sexually dimorphic-differing significantly between biological males and females. However, previous investigations of sexual dimorphism in scapula shape have not considered the effects of allometry (the relationship between size and shape). Disentangling allometry from sexual dimorphism is necessary because apparent sex-based differences in shape could be due to inherent differences in body size. This study aimed to investigate sexual dimorphism in scapula shape and examine the role of allometry in sex-based variation. We used three-dimensional geometric morphometrics with Procrustes ANOVA to quantify scapula shape variation associated with sex and size in 125 scapulae. Scapula shape significantly differed between males and females, and males tended to have larger scapulae than females for the same body height. We found that males and females exhibited distinct allometric relationships, and sexually dimorphic shape changes did not align with male- or female-specific allometry. A secondary test revealed that sexual dimorphism in scapula shape persisted between males and females of similar body heights. Overall, our findings indicate that there are sex-based differences in scapula shape that cannot be attributed to size-shape relationships. Our results shed light on the potential role of sexual selection in human shoulder evolution, present new hypotheses for biomechanical differences in shoulder function between sexes, and identify relevant traits for improving sex classification accuracy in forensic analyses., (© 2024 The Author(s). Background: Knowledge of premorbid glenoid parameters at the time of shoulder arthroplasty, such as inclination, version, joint line position, height, and width, can assist with implant selection, implant positioning, metal augment sizing, and/or bone graft dimensions. The objective of this study was to validate a scapular statistical shape model (SSM) in predicting patient-specific glenoid morphology in scapulae with clinically relevant glenoid erosion patterns., Methods: Computed tomography scans of 30 healthy scapulae were obtained and used as the control group. Each scapula was then virtually eroded to create 7 erosion patterns (Walch A1, A2, B2, B3, D, Favard E2, and E3). This resulted in 210 uniquely eroded glenoid models, forming the eroded glenoid group. A scapular SSM, created from a different database of 85 healthy scapulae, was then applied to each eroded scapula to predict the premorbid glenoid morphology. The premorbid glenoid inclination, version, height, width, radius of best-fit sphere, and glenoid joint line position were automatically calculated for each of the 210 eroded glenoids. The mean values for all outcome variables were compared across all erosion types between the healthy, eroded, and SSM-predicted groups using a 2-way repeated measures analysis of variance., Results: The SSM was able to predict the mean premorbid glenoid parameters of the eroded glenoids with a mean absolute difference of 3° ± 2° for inclination, 3° ± 2° for version, 2 ± 1 mm for glenoid height, 2 ± 1 mm for glenoid width, 5 ± 4 mm for radius of best-fit sphere, and 1 ± 1 mm for glenoid joint line. The mean SSM-predicted values for inclination, version, height, width, and radius were not significantly different than the control group (P > .05)., Discussion: An SSM has been developed that can reliably predict premorbid glenoid morphology and glenoid indices in patients with common glenoid erosion patterns. This technology can serve as a useful template to visually represent the premorbid healthy glenoid in patients with severe glenoid bony erosions. Background/Objectives : The suprascapular nerve is most vulnerable to entrapment at the suprascapular and spinoglenoid notches, causing neuropathy. Numerous studies have examined the suprascapular notch and ligament and its relationship with suprascapular nerve entrapment, but few have examined the spinoglenoid notch and the inferior transverse scapular ligament (ITSL). This study summarizes all existing ITSL morphology studies and presents a simple and comprehensive classification system for different ITSL subtypes. Methods: A systematic review of the literature was conducted according to the PRISMA guidelines, searching the online databases PubMed and Embase. The references of each relevant article were further screened to find more eligible studies. The Anatomical Quality Assessment tool was used in order to further evaluate the quality of the records extracted. STATA MP 14 was used for the analysis in this study. Results : In total, 14 studies (995 scapulae; minimum: 1 and maximum: 268) were included in the present study. The overall ITSL prevalence was 5.8 (95% CI: 4.5-7.1) and the estimated odds for ligamentous vs. membranous type was 0.5 (95% CI: 0.3-0.7). The basic different morphological subtypes of the ITSL reported in the included studies are the band-like ligament, the fan-shaped ligament, the membranous ITSL, and the perforated membranous types. Conclusions: The ITSL represents an anatomical structure of mostly ligamentous nature. A single ITSL definition and standardization of its basic morphological subtypes along with an easy-to-remember and thus widely used classification system could greatly facilitate the comprehensive description, identification, and proper handling of this element across many surgical procedures.

The nutritive arteries of bones may be injured due to fracture or surgical procedures. Therefore, there are some studies focused on the location of the nutrient foramen (NF) of bones. Rats are the most preferred animals in experimental studies. The purpose of this study is to expose the locational variations of the NF on the rat (Sprague Dawley) scapula. A total of 60 adult rat scapulae (from 16 male and 14 female rats) were used. The diameters of NFs were measured. The length, width, and distances of the NF to the proximal and cranial edges were measured. Foraminal indices were also calculated. It was determined that the average number of NF per scapula was 1.8. The location of the NFs was 52% on the medial aspect and 48% on the lateral aspect. On the medial aspect of the scapula, NFs were frequently found ventrally, on the neck region of the scapula. Laterally, 40 NFs were found in the ventral region of the infraspinatus fossa and only 12 in the ventral region of the supraspinatus fossa. Longitudinal foraminal index 95% confidence intervals were 74.25-79.18 (lateral) and 71.70-75.97 (medial). Transversal foraminal index 95% confidence intervals were 40.98-45.02 (lateral) and 42.91-46.07 (medial). Diameter of the NF 95% confidence interval was 0.21-0.39 mm. The locational knowledge of the NF can be utilized in anatomical or experimental surgery studies. Whether the forelimb-digging apparatus of tooth-digging subterranean mammals has similar levels of specialization as compared to scratch-diggers is still unknown. We assessed the scapular morphology and forelimb musculature of all four solitary African mole rats (Bathyergidae): two scratch-diggers, Bathyergus suillus and Bathyergus janetta, and two chisel-tooth diggers, Heliophobius argenteocinereus and Georychus capensis. Remarkable differences were detected: Bathyergus have more robust neck, shoulder, and forearm muscles as compared to the other genera. Some muscles in Bathyergus were also fused and often showing wider attachment areas to bones, which correlate well with its more robust and larger scapula, and its wider and medially oriented olecranon. This suggests that shoulder, elbow, and wrist work in synergy in Bathyergus for generating greater out-forces and that the scapula and proximal ulna play fundamental roles as pivots to maximize and accommodate specialized muscles for better (i) glenohumeral and scapular stabilization, (ii) powerful shoulder flexion, (iii) extension of the elbow and (iv) flexion of the manus and digits. Moreover, although all bathyergids showed a similar set of muscles, Heliophobius lacked the m. tensor fasciae antebrachii (aiding with elbow extension and humeral retraction), and Heliophobius and Georychus lacked the m. articularis humeri (aiding with humeral adduction), indicating deeper morphogenetic differences among digging groups and suggesting a relatively less specialized scratch-digging ability. Nevertheless, Heliophobius and Bathyergus shared some similar adaptations allowing scratch-digging. Our results provide new information about the morphological divergence within this family associated with the specialization to distinct functions and digging behaviors, thus contributing to understand the mosaic of adaptations emerging in phylogenetically and ecologically closer subterranean taxa. This and previous anatomical studies on the Bathyergidae will provide researchers with a substantial basis on the form and function of the musculoskeletal system for future kinematic investigations of digging behavior, as well as to define potential indicators of scratch-digging ability., (© 2024 The Authors. Introduction: This study evaluates the role of anatomic scapular morphology in acromion and scapular spine fracture (SSAF) risk after reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA)., Methods: Twelve scapular measurements were captured based on pilot study data, including scapular width measurements at the acromion (Z1), middle of the scapular spine (Z2), and medial to the first major angulation (Z3). Measurements were applied to 3D-CT scans from patients who sustained SSAF after RSA (SSAF group) and compared with those who did not (control group). Measurements were done by four investigators, and the intraclass correlation coefficient was calculated. Regression analysis determined trends in fracture incidence., Results: One hundred forty-nine patients from two separate surgeons (J.L., A.M.) were matched by age and surgical indication of whom 51 sustained SSAF after reverse shoulder arthroplasty. Average ages for the SSAF and control cohorts were 78.6 and 72.1 years, respectively. Among the SSAF group, 15 were Levy type I, 26 Levy type II, and 10 Levy type 3 fractures. The intraclass correlation coefficient of Z1, Z2, and Z3 measurements was excellent (0.92, 0.92, and 0.94, respectively). Zone 1 and 3 measurements for the control group were 18.6 ± 3.7 mm and 3.2 ± 1.0 mm, respectively, compared with 22.5 ± 5.9 mm and 2.0 ± 0.70 mm in the SSAF group, respectively. The fracture group trended toward larger Z1 and smaller Z3 measurements. The average scapular spine proportion (SSP), Z1/Z3, was significantly greater in the control 6.20 ± 1.80 versus (12.60 ± 6.30; P < 0.05). Regression analysis showed a scapular spine proportion of ≤5 was associated with a fracture risk <5%, whereas an SSP of 9.2 correlated with a 50% fracture risk., Discussion: Patients with a thicker acromions (Z1) and thinner medial scapular spines (Z3) have increased fracture risk. Extreme Lateral Interbody Fusion (XLIF) is currently used in the clinical treatment of thoracic spine disorders and has achieved desirable results. In this study, we selected CT images of the thoracic spine from 54 patients and divided the intervertebral spaces into six regions (A, I, II, III, IV, P) using the Moro method. We observed the adjacent relationships between the thoracic spine and surrounding tissues such as the scapula, esophagus, thoracic aorta, and superior vena cava. We made four main findings: firstly, when the scapulae were symmetrical on both sides, over 80% of patients had the T1-4 II-III region obstructed by the scapulae; secondly, when the esophagus was located on the left side of the vertebral body, 3.7% to 24.1% of patients had the T4-9 region located in the II-III zone; furthermore, when the thoracic aorta was on the left side of the vertebral body, over 80% of individuals in the T4-9 segment occupied the II-III region, with the values being 55.5% and 20.4% for T9/10 and T10/11, respectively; finally, the superior vena cava was located on the right side of the T4/5 vertebra, with 3.7% of individuals having it in the II-III region, while on the left side of T5-9, 3.7% to 18.5% of individuals had it in the II-III region. Based on these findings, we suggest that XLIF should not be performed on the T1-4 vertebrae due to scapular obstruction. Selecting the left-sided approach for XLIF in the T4-11 segments may risk injuring the thoracic aorta, esophagus, and superior vena cava, while the T11/12 segment is considered safe and feasible. Anthropometric studies of the scapula have been rare in Spanish populations, nevertheless they are of current interest in forensic anthropology for estimation of sex. Although the estimation of sex is usually carried out on the pelvis and skull, other measurements related to the scapula can be helpful when the skeletal remains are incomplete. Glenohumeral osteoarthritis development is influenced, among others, by the morphology of the scapula, which is one of the less studied aspects. We carried out a descriptive study of anthropometric parameters in a series of 157 scapulae (82 individuals) on bone remains dated to the 20th century from a population of Granada (Southern Spain). Seventy seven (49%) were right-side and 80 (51%) left-side; 72 (45.9%) were from males and 85 (54.1%) from females, and the mean age at death was 70.76±11.7 years. The objective was to develop a discrimination function for sex estimation based on anthropometric parameters of the scapula other than those considered to date, and to analyze the prevalence of glenohumeral osteoarthritis in relation to selected anthropometric parameters. A logistic regression model based on parameters of the upper-external segment of the scapula was done. The obtained formula: 1/1+e^ (- (-57.911 + 0.350*B + 0283*C + 0.249*b + 0.166*a +-0.100*β) classifies male sex with 98.3% accuracy and female sex with 92.1%. Glenohumeral osteoarthritis was detected in 16.6% of individuals and was related to age (p<0.05), scapular length (p<0.05), glenoid width (p<0.05), glenopolar angle (p<0.05), and α angle (p<0.05) in bivariate analyses but showed no significant associations in multivariate analyses. This approach can be useful for anthropological-forensic identification when scapula remains are incomplete. Reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (RTSA) accounts for over half of shoulder replacement surgeries. At present, the optimal position of RTSA components is unknown. Previous biomechanical studies have investigated the effect of construct placement to quantify mobility, stability and functionality postoperatively. While studies have provided valuable information on construct design and surgical placement, they have not systematically evaluated the importance of scapular morphology on biomechanical outcomes. The aim of this study was to assess the influence of scapular morphology variation on RTSA biomechanics using statistical models, musculoskeletal modeling and predictive simulation. The scapular geometry of a musculoskeletal model was altered across six modes of variation at four levels (±1 and ±3 SD) from a clinically derived statistical shape model. For each model, a standardized virtual surgery was performed to place RTSA components in the same relative position on each model then implemented in 50 predictive simulations of upward and lateral reaching tasks. Results showed morphology affected functional changes in the deltoid moment arms and recruitment for the two tasks. Variation of the anatomy that reduced the efficiency of the deltoids showed increased levels of muscle force production, joint load magnitude and shear. These findings suggest that scapular morphology plays an important role in postoperative biomechanical function of the shoulder with an implanted RTSA. Furthermore a "one-size-fits-all" approach for construct surgical placement may lead to suboptimal patient outcomes across a clinical population. Here we present an updated inventory and study of pectoral girdle remains recovered from the Sima de los Huesos (SH) site. Here, we describe the key morphological traits of adults and, for the first time, subadult specimens. Because morphological traits can change with age, we also discuss some shortcomings related to age estimation in postcranial fossil specimens. Adult clavicles from the SH are long with a low robusticity index and marked curvatures in the superior view. Among these traits, only extreme clavicular length seems to characterize subadult individuals. Neandertals share all these traits. In the case of the scapula, the SH specimens share a relatively long and narrow glenoid fossa with Neandertals. This trait is also present in subadult individuals. Additionally, most specimens from SH, adults, and subadults showed a dorsal axillary sulcus on the scapular lateral border, a trait also present in most adult and subadult Neandertals. Background: The Latarjet procedure is increasingly being utilized for the treatment of glenoid bone loss and has a relatively high neurological complication rate. Understanding the position-dependent anatomy of the axillary nerve (AN) is crucial to preventing injuries., Purpose: To quantify the effects of changes in the shoulder position and degree of glenoid bone loss during the Latarjet procedure on the position of the AN., Study Design: Controlled laboratory study., Methods: A total of 10 cadaveric shoulders were dissected, leaving the tendons of the rotator cuff and deltoid for muscle loading. The 3-dimensional position of the AN was quantified relative to the inferior glenoid under 3 conditions: (1) intact shoulder, (2) Latarjet procedure with 15% bone loss, and (3) Latarjet procedure with 30% bone loss. Measurements were obtained at 0°, 30°, and 60° of glenohumeral abduction (equivalent to 0°, 45°, and 90° of shoulder abduction) and at 0°, 45°, and 90° of humeral external rotation (ER)., Results: Abduction of the shoulder to 60° resulted in a posterior (9.5 ± 1.1 mm; P < .001), superior (3.0 ± 1.2 mm; P = .013), and lateral (19.1 ± 2.3 mm; P < .001) shift of the AN, and ER to 90° resulted in anterior translation (10.0 ± 1.2 mm; P < .001). Overall, ER increased the minimum AN-glenoid distance at 30° of abduction (14.9 ± 1.3 mm [0° of ER] vs 17.3 ± 1.5 mm [90° of ER]; P = .045). The Latarjet procedure with both 15 and 30% glenoid bone loss resulted in a superior and medial shift of the AN relative to the intact state. A decreased minimum AN-glenoid distance was seen after the Latarjet procedure with 30% bone loss at 60° abduction and 90° ER (17.7 ± 1.6 mm [intact] vs 13.9 ± 1.6 mm [30% bone loss]; P = .007), but no significant differences were seen after the Latarjet procedure with 15% bone loss., Conclusion: Abduction of the shoulder induced a superior, lateral, and posterior shift of the AN, and ER caused anterior translation. Interestingly, the Latarjet procedure, when performed on shoulders with extensive glenoid bone loss, significantly reduced the minimum AN-glenoid distance during shoulder abduction and ER. These novel findings imply that patients with substantial glenoid bone loss may be at a higher risk of AN injuries during critical portions of the procedure. Age estimation methods through the metric study of bones in non-adult individuals are a frequently used tool in Biological and Forensic Anthropology; however, few methodological validation studies are available, given the limited number of adequate samples for their study. In this context, the aim of this work is to test the effectiveness of the methods of Fazekas and Kósa (1978), Saunders et al. (1993), Rissech and Black (2007) and Cardoso et al. (2017), for age estimation through the measurements of the scapula, in the non-adult osteological collection of the Anthropology Laboratory of the University of Granada (Spain), one of the most representative identified non-adult collections internationally. For this purpose, nine different measurements of the scapula were taken from a total of 149 non-adult individuals, applying the regression formulae proposed by the different authors and verifying their accuracy. Results have shown the existence of significant differences between the real age and the estimated age in almost all the tested methods, with degrees of error that differ from those obtained in the original study populations. The modular organization of tetrapod paired limbs and girdles, influenced by the expression of Hox genes is one of the primary driving forces of the evolution of animal locomotion. The increased morphological diversification of the paired limbs is correlated with reduced between-limb covariation, while correlation within the elements is usually higher than between the elements. The tailed amphibians, such as Lissotriton newts, have a biphasic lifestyle with aquatic and terrestrial environments imposing different constraints on limb skeleton. By employing the methods of computerized microtomography and 3D geometric morphometrics, we explored the pattern of morphological variation, disparity, modularity and morphological integration in the proximal parts of the anterior limbs of six species of Eurasian small bodied newts. Although the species significantly differ in limb shape, there is a great overlap in morphology of scapula and humerus, and there are no differences in morphological disparity. For the scapula, the shape differences related to the duration of the aquatic period are in length, depth and curvature. The shape of the humerus is not affected by the length of aquatic period, and shape differences between the species are related to robustness of the body. The length of aquatic period has statistically supported phylogenetic signal. The scapula and humerus are structures of varying modularity. For the humerus, the strongest support on the phylogenetic level was for the capitulum/shaft hypothesis, which can also be interpreted as functional modularity. For the scapula, the greatest support was for the antero-posterior hypothesis of modularity in case of Lissotriton vulgaris, which can be explained by different functional roles and muscle insertion patterns, while there was no phylogenetic modularity. The modularity patterns seem to correspond with the general tetrapod pattern, with modularity being more pronounced in the distal structure. The future research should include more salamandrid taxa with different habitat preferences and both adult and larval stages, in order to explore how size, phylogeny and ecology affect the morphology and covariation patterns of limbs., (© 2024 Anatomical Society.)

The present study assessed the correlation between the stature and scapular measurements from both sides in order to develop population-specific regression equations to estimate the stature from measurements of the scapula in a contemporary Northern Indian population individually for the left and right sides. A total of 597 cadavers underwent postmortem multidetector computed tomography and subsequent medicolegal autopsy in our department between August 2021 and August 2022. Two hundred samples (100 males and 100 females) were randomly collected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Six linear anthropometric measurements of the scapula from either side were measured using the 3D volume-rendered technique by an electronic cursor. Each anthropometric measurement showed a significant difference between males and females ( p < 0.05). Regression analysis was applied to match the taken measurements against stature. The accuracy to predict stature ranged from 3.99 to 4.94 cm for males and from 4.49 to 5.27 cm for females, respectively. Left-sided measurements were better predictors of stature than the right side in both genders. Accurate detection of the levator scapulae muscle is critical for effective diagnostic and therapeutic interventions. The commonly used surface anatomy approach has not been validated and is less accurate than ultrasound-guided techniques. Therefore, we determined the needle insertion point for the levator scapulae using a new technique based on the anatomy of the scapula. This investigation used 15 fresh-frozen cadavers to explore the relationship between the acromial angle and medial tip of the scapular spine (O) of the scapular spine. Based on the x-axis (the distance [L] from Point O to point acromial angle) and the y-axis perpendicular to the x-axis passing through Point O, the barycentric coordinates were determined through the intersections of each axis and the superior angle of the scapula with the levator scapulae. Various ratios involving the established distance L) were ascertained, we compared the measurements and ratios between the male and female groups, and the accuracy of the new technique was compared with the conventional technique. The optimal site of the new technique was within 6 to 7% of distance L on the x-axis and 42 to 44% of distance L on the y-axis. This technique was significantly more accurate than the conventional technique (P = .006). Although ultrasound allows for accurate injections via real-time visualization, its unavailability in some cases highlights the importance of understanding surface anatomy landmarks. Our new technique, based on the anatomy of the scapula and relative measurements, is more accurate than the conventional technique. The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between scapula morphology and rotator cuff tears (RCT). Hundred seventeen shoulders with and 87 shoulders without RCTs were included in this retrospective study. The critical shoulder angle (CSA) and lateral acromion angle in the coronal view, and the acromial coverage angle (ACA) and coracoid and scapular spine angle (CSSA) in the sagittal view were evaluated using 3-dimensional computed tomography. The glenoid anterior tilt, anterior acromial projection angle (AAPA), coracoid process angle, scapular spine angle (SSA), and inferior angle angle (IAA) with respect to the scapular plane were measured in the sagittal view. In univariate logistic regression analysis, CSA, ACA, AAPA, SSA, and IAA were significantly greater in shoulders with RCTs, whereas CSSA was greater in shoulders without RCTs. In multivariate logistic regression analysis, CSA and IAA were greater in shoulders with RCT and were significantly associated with this condition (P=.00073, P=.0032). This study has shown us that RCTs were associated with a greater curvature of the scapular body and greater CSA and IAA.

The musculoskeletal anatomy of the shoulder of many ungulates has been inferred from veterinary model taxa, with uniformity in muscle arrangements and attachment sites often assumed. In this study, I investigated the muscular and osteological anatomy of tapirs and their relatives (Perissodactyla: Tapiroidea), using a combination of gross dissection and digital imaging (photography and laser surface scanning). Dissections of three modern tapir species revealed that the m. infraspinatus originates from both supraspinous and infraspinous fossae for all species, lying on both sides of the distal scapular spine. The epimysial border between the m. supraspinatus and m. infraspinatus origin sites are marked in all species by an ossified ridge, sometimes extending the length of the scapular spine. This "supraspinous ridge" is clearly visible on the scapular surface of both modern and extinct Tapirus scapulae; however, the ridge does not appear present in any non-Tapirus tapiroids examined (e.g., Helaletes, Nexuotapirus), nor in other perissodactyls or artiodactyls. Moreover, the ridge exhibits a clearly distinct morphology in Tapirus indicus compared to all other Tapirus species examined. Combined, these findings indicate that the presence and position of the "supraspinous ridge" may represent a robust phylogenetic character for reconstructing relationships within tapiroids. Unfortunately, any functional locomotor outcomes or benefits of the m. infraspinatus straddling the scapular spine remains elusive. This cross-sectional descriptive purposive study was conducted among 150 (70 right and 80 left) fully ossified dry human scapulae of Bangladeshi people from January 2019 to December 2019 in the Department of Anatomy, Mymensingh Medical College, Mymensingh. Shape of the glenoid cavity was observed as pear, oval or inverted comma shape. Morphometric parameters such as length and breadth of glenoid cavity were measured by digital Vernier slide calipers. In this study, 19.13% cases were found inverted comma shaped, 35.65% cases were oval and 45.22% cases were pear shaped. The mean±SD length of glenoid cavity was 37.5±3.61 mm and 36.19±3.68 mm on right and left sided scapulae respectively and mean±SD breadth was 23.6±2.73 mm on right and 23.42±2.75 mm on left side respectively. Mean±SD glenoid cavity index was 62.89±4.39 on right and 64.61±4.74 on left sided scapulae. Morphometric analysis of glenoid fossa of scapula might help clinicians in shoulder and its associated diseases.

Background and Objectives : Age estimation from skeletal remains and in living individuals is an important issue for human identification, and also plays a critical role in judicial proceedings for migrants. Forensic analysis of ossification centers is the main evaluation method for age estimation, and ossification degree can be determined using computed tomography analysis. The purpose of this study is to investigate the applicability of CT (computed tomography) in the analysis of left scapula ossification centers, for forensic age estimation in Turkish society. Materials and Methods : We analyzed six ossification centers of the left scapula and these ossification centers are the coracoid, subcoracoid, coracoid apex, acromial, glenoid, and inferior angle ossification centers. A pediatric radiologist analyzed these six ossification centers of the scapula by using a staging method defined by Schmeling et al. in 2004. Two months after the first assessment, 20 randomly selected cases was reanalyzed by the first observer and by another pediatric radiologist. Correlation between the age and ossification stage was assessed using Spearman's nonparametric correlation test. Linear regression analysis was performed using a backwards model. Cohen's kappa coefficient was used for evaluating interobserver and intraobserver variability. Results : In this retrospective study, 397 (248 male and 149 female) cases were evaluated. Ages ranged between 7.1 and 30.9. The mean age was 19.83 ± 6.49. We determined a positive significant correlation between the age and the ossification stages of ossification centers analyzed in both sexes. In each ossification center, except inferior angle, all of the stage 1 and 2 cases in both sexes were under 18 years old. Intraobserver and interobserver evaluations showed that reproducibility and consistency of the method was relatively good. Conclusions : The present study indicated that CT analysis of scapula ossification centers might be helpful in forensic age assessment of living individuals and dry bones.

Background: The etiology of rotator cuff tears (RCTs) have been investigated for years and many underlying causes have been identified. Shoulder joint morphology is one of the extrinsic causes of RCTs., Aim: Morphometric measurements on MRI sections determined which parameters are an important indicator of RCT in patients with shoulder pain. The aim of this study was to determine the risk factors in the etiology of RCTs by evaluating the shoulder joint morphology with the help of previously defined radiological parameters., Method: Between January 2019-December 2020, 408 patients (40-70 years old) who underwent shoulder MRI and met the criteria were included in the study. There were 202 patients in the RCT group and 206 patients in the control group. Acromion type, acromial index (AI), critical shoulder angle (CSA), acromiohumeral distance (AHD), lateral acromial angle (LAA), acromial angulation (AA), acromion-greater tuberosity impingement index (ATI), and glenoid version angle (GVA) were measured from the MRI images of the patients., Results: AI (0.64 vs. 0.60, p = 0.003) CSA (35.3° vs. 32.4°, p = 0.004), ATI (0.91 vs. 0.83, P < 0.001), and AA (13.6° vs. 11.9°, p = 0.011) values were higher in the RCT group than in the control group and the difference was significant. AHD (8.1 mm vs. 9.9 mm, P < 0.001), LAA (77.2° vs. 80.9°, p = 0.004) and GVA (-3.9° vs. -2.5°, P < 0.001) values were lower in the RCT group than in the control group, and again the difference was significant. According to the receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, the cutoff values were 0.623 for AI and 0.860 for ATI., Conclusion: Acromion type, AI, CSA, AHD, LAA, AA, ATI, and GVA are suitable radiological parameters to evaluate shoulder joint morphology. The estimation of biological sex is a critical step in the assessment of the biological profile of an anonymous skeletonized individual. In certain recovery circumstances, the most dimorphic skeletal areas, such as the pelvis, are absent or fragmented; in that case, other bones of the skeleton, including the clavicle and scapula, can be used to predict sex. The purpose of this research is to generate new models for the estimation of sex with clavicular and scapular measurements using a study-sample of 129 individuals with clavicle (65 males and 64 females) and 112 individuals with scapula (50 males and 62 females) from the Lisbon Identified Skeletal Collection (Portugal). A decision tree classifier (C4.5) and logistic regression (LR) were employed to create univariable and multivariable sex prediction models. Accuracy under cross-validation of the classification models is high (up to 93.8%), with minimal bias (<5%), particularly in the multivariable models. Background: Patient-specific scapular shape in functional posture can be highly relevant to clinical research. Biplanar radiography is a relevant modality for that purpose with already two existing assessment methods. However, they are either time-consuming or lack accuracy. The aim of this study was to propose a new, more user-friendly and accurate method to determine scapular shape., Methods: The proposed method relied on simplified manual inputs and an upgraded version of the first 3D estimate based on statistical inferences and Moving-Least Square (MLS) deformation of a template. Then, manual adjustments, with real-time MLS algorithm and contour matching adjustments with an adapted minimal path method, were added to improve the match between the projected 3D model and the radiographic contours. The accuracy and reproducibility of the method were assessed (with 6 and 12 subjects, respectively)., Findings: The shape accuracy was in average under 2 mm (1.3 mm in the glenoid region). The reproducibility study on the clinical parameters found intra-observer 95% confidence intervals under 3 mm or 3° for all parameters, except for glenoid inclination and Critical Shoulder Angle, ranging between 3° and 6°., Interpretation: This method is a first step towards an accurate reconstruction of the scapula to assess clinical parameters in a functional posture. Objectives: A morphocline of the glenoid cavity has been used to infer differences in locomotor behaviors; however, the glenoid cavity is surrounded by the glenoid labrum, a fibrocartilaginous structure that could influence the functionality of the glenoid. The objectives of this study are to explore the effects of the glenoid labrum on the area, depth, and morphology of the glenoid cavity in primates., Materials and Methods: Photogrammetry was used to build 3D models of the glenoid, with and without the labrum, and three- (3D) and two-dimensional (2D) geometric morphometrics (GM) was applied. 2D areas were collected from zenithal images for glenoids with and without labrum to evaluate the availability of articular surface area., Results: In the 2D GM the morphocline is present in the dry-bone sample but not with the presence of the glenoid labrum. In the 3D GM there are differences between species mainly concerning the depth of the glenoid cavity. 2D areas reveal that the amount of articular area of the glenoid cavity increases with the presence of the labrum, particularly in humans., Discussion: The glenoid labrum changes the shape, increases the depth and the surface area of the glenoid cavity, particularly in humans. Purpose: The aim of our study is to study the prevalence and anatomy of scapular foramina (SF) and scapular nutrient foramina (SNF) in dried skeletons from the Northeastern Thai population., Methods: A total of 150 dried scapulae were investigated. Both SF and SNF were identified using a metal wire with a diameter of 0.36 mm. The number, locations, lengths, and diameters of SF were recorded. Subsequently, SNF were identified using the same metal wire. Their number and locations were recorded. Two observers performed the evaluations and measurements., Results: SF were present in 78.0% of scapulae. They could have up to five openings. Eighteen types were found. On average they were longer in males (21.7 ± 5.0 mm) than females (19.45 ± 4.6 mm). The mean diameters of both the superior and inferior openings were significantly greater in females (p < 0.01). SNF, in contrast, were present in 100% of scapulae. They were located in the supraspinous fossa (36.7%), subscapular fossa (31.3%), infraspinous fossa (22.8%), and peri-glenoid area (10.0%)., Conclusion: Unlike previous studies, the present study suggests that SF are normal anatomical findings, present in 78.0% of the scapulae investigated. The primate scapula has been studied widely since its shape has been shown to correlate with how the forelimb is used in daily activities. In this study, we expand on the existing literature and use an image-based methodology that was originally developed for orthopaedic practice to quantify and compare the three-dimensional (3D) morphology of the scapula across humans and great apes. We expect that this image-based approach will allow us to identify differences between great apes and humans that can be related to differences in mobility and loading regime of the shoulder. We hypothesize that gorillas and chimpanzees will have a similar scapular morphology, geared towards stability and weight-bearing in knuckle-walking, whilst the scapular morphology of orangutans is expected to be more similar to that of humans given their high glenohumeral mobility associated with their suspensory lifestyle. We made 3D reconstructions of computed tomography scans of 69 scapulae from four hominid genera (Pongo, Gorilla, Pan and Homo). On these 3D bone meshes, the inferior glenoid plane was determined, and subsequently, a set of bony landmarks on the scapular body, coracoid, and acromion were defined. These landmarks allowed us to measure a set of functionally relevant angles which represent acromial overhang, subacromial space and coracoacromial space. The angles that were measured are: the delto-fulcral triangle (DFT), comprising the alpha, beta, and delta angle, the acromion-glenoid angle (AGA), the coracoid-glenoid centre-posterior acromial angle (CGA), the anterior tilt (TA CGA) and the posterior tilt of the CGA (PT CGA). Three observers placed the landmarks on the 3D bone meshes, allowing us to calculate the inter-observer error. The main differences in the DFT were found between humans and the great apes, with small differences between the great apes. The DFT of humans was significantly lower compared to that of the great apes, with the smallest alpha (32.7°), smallest delta (45.7°) and highest beta angle (101.6°) of all genera. The DFT of chimpanzees was significantly higher compared to that of humans (p < 0.01), with a larger alpha (37.6°) and delta angle (54.5°) and smaller beta angle (87.9°). The mean AGA of humans (59.1°) was significantly smaller (p < 0.001) than that of gorillas (68.8°). The mean CGA of humans (110.1°) was significantly higher (p < 0.001) than in orangutans (92.9°). Humans and gorillas showed mainly a posterior tilt of their coracoacromial complex whilst chimpanzees showed mainly an anterior tilt. The coracoacromial complex of the orangutans was not tilted anteriorly or posteriorly. With our image-based method, we were able to identify morphological features of the scapula that differed significantly between hominid genera. However, we did not find an overall dichotomy in scapular morphology geared towards high stability (Pan/Gorilla) or high mobility (Homo/Pongo). Purpose: To report atypical anatomical variation of an osseous suprascapular canal, and to elaborate on its clinical significance as a potential anatomical factor that could obscure a direct posterior surgical approach and suprascapular nerve block., Methods: Osteological observational study of the scapula with emphasis on the suprascapular space. The pool of investigated sample size was collectively 768 specimens composed of 529 adult dry scapulae (240 paired, 289 un-paired), 54 children dry scapulae, 135 wet scapulae observed during cadaveric dissections, 47 retrospective 3D CT reconstructions, and 3 retrospective full sequence shoulder MRI. The two reported cases came from the 240 (120 skeleton) observed paired scapulae. Furthermore, the osseous suprascapular canal was examined by X-rays and its internal path was exposed by CT sections. A narrative review was conducted to investigate any relevant reports on the subject matter., Results: Two left dry bone scapulae with unilateral osseous suprascapular canal were found. The incidence of this atypical morphology of an osseous canal is probably five cases reported in three studies including this cases study., Conclusions: The reported cases aid in explaining additional possible anatomical factors that could lead to below threshold anesthetic effect in posterior suprascapular nerve block procedures. Therefore, it is more practical to visualize the suprascapular canal by some imaging method before attempting to blindly access the suprascapular nerve in nerve block or posterior surgical approach due to the rare potential existence of an ossified barrier hindering the procedure., Level of Evidence: V Basic Science Research., (© 2022. Background: Neurovascular anatomy has not been previously quantified for the arthroscopic snapping scapula approach with the patient in the most frequent patient position ("chicken-wing" position). The purposes of this study were (1) to determine anatomic relationships of the superomedial scapula and neurovascular structures at risk during arthroscopic surgical treatment of snapping scapula syndrome (SSS), (2) to compare these measurements between the arm in the neutral position and the arm in the chicken-wing position, and (3) to establish safe zones for arthroscopic treatment of SSS., Methods: Eight fresh-frozen cadaveric hemi-torsos (mean age, 55.8 years; range, 52-66 years) were dissected to ascertain relevant anatomic structure locations including the (1) spinal accessory nerve, (2) dorsal scapular nerve, and (3) suprascapular nerve. A coordinate measuring device was used to collect data on the relationships of anatomic landmarks and at-risk structures during the surgical approach., Results: The dorsal scapular nerve was a mean of 24.4 mm medial to the superomedial scapula in the neutral position and 33.1 mm medial in the chicken-wing position (P < .001); the dorsal scapular nerve was 21.7 mm medial to the medial border of the scapular spine in the neutral position and 35.5 mm medial in the chicken-wing position (P < .001). The mean distance from the superomedial angle to the spinal accessory nerve intersection at the superior scapular border was 16.5 mm in the neutral position and 15.0 mm in the chicken-wing position (P = .031). The average distance from the superomedial angle to the closest point of the spinal accessory nerve was 11.6 mm and 10.4 mm in the neutral position and chicken-wing position, respectively (P = .039)., Conclusion: Neurologic structures around the scapula vary significantly between the neutral arm position and the chicken-wing position commonly used in the arthroscopic treatment of SSS. The infraspinatus muscle is situated under the scapular spine in the infraspinous fossa and inserts into the greater tuberosity of the humerus. It is a component of a crucial shoulder muscle group, the rotator cuff. There are a few interesting additional muscles in the infraspinal region. In the literature they are called the infraspinatus superficialis, infraspinatus minor and infraspinatus accessory muscles. The infraspinatus minor muscle is described as a superficial muscle bundle running under the scapular spine. During routine anatomical dissection, an unreported variation of the infraspinatus minor muscle was found. It derived from the inferior surface of the scapular spine and the infraspinous fossa. It had two heads. The superior head inserted on the greater tuberosity of the humerus. The inferior head inserted on the tendinous part of the infraspinatus muscle. There was also an unusual fusion of the infraspinatus muscle with the teres minor muscle. Introduction: The circumflex scapular artery (CSA) has been described in detail in the literature, but the groove, i.e., the circumflex sulcus (CFS), formed by the artery on the lateral pillar of the scapula has been completely neglected. The aim of the present study was to describe the variability and anatomy of the CFS., Materials and Methods: The study was based on the examination of 103 pairs of dry bone specimens of adult scapulae, i.e., 206 specimens, including 92 (46 pairs) male and 114 (57 pairs) female specimens. In the first step, quantitative criteria were defined for assessment of the CFS presence and type. Subsequently, statistical analysis of the obtained data was performed., Results: The study revealed considerable variability of the arterial groove, which was well developed in 33% (type A), shallow in 40% (type B), and absent in 27% (type C) of cases. The mean distance between CFS and the infraglenoid tubercle was 3.3 cm CI 0.95 (3.1-3.3), which corresponds to the proximal third of the lateral border of the scapula., Conclusion: The study has confirmed variability of the arterial groove (CFS) and its localization in relation to the inferior glenoid rim. Introduction: The critical shoulder angle (CSA) is a surrogate marker of the coronal plane morphology of the scapula. CSA differences between scapulae could be due to differences in glenoid inclination (GI) or the location of the most lateral part of the acromion relative to the inferior glenoid, or both. An understanding of the hierarchy of the scapular morphological changes associated with glenohumeral osteoarthritis (GHOA) and rotator cuff (RC) tears would allow accurate biomechanical modeling., Methods: A prospective observational case control study was undertaken in which the GI, "nonglenoid"-CSA, acromial vertical offset index, acromial horizontal offset index, acromial horizontal-vertical offset index, and coronal plane angulation of the acromion (CPAA-m) were measured on high-quality radiographs to compare coronal plane scapular anatomy in: (1) patients with asymptomatic atraumatic full-thickness RC tears, (2) patients with symptomatic primary GHOA, and (3) a control group with no RC tear or GHOA treated for glenohumeral instability or symptomatic labral pathology. Intraobserver reliability of the measurements was performed., Results: In the GHOA group, the GI was lower (less superiorly inclined) than the RC tear group (difference between the means: -4.8°, 95% confidence interval [CI] [-8.8°, -0.9°], P = .014) and the control group (difference between the means: -7.9°, 95% CI [-11.8°, -3.9°], P = .000); there was no difference in the acromial measurements. In the RC tear group, the nonglenoid-CSA was higher (difference between the means: 7.7°, 95% CI [3.0°, 12.3°], P = .001), the acromial vertical offset index was lower (difference between the means: -0.13, 95% CI [-0.24, -0.01], P = .026), and the acromial horizontal-vertical offset index was higher (difference between the means: 0.15, 95% CI [0.01, 0.28], P = .030) than the control group; there was no difference in the acromial horizontal offset index or the GI. The CPAA-m was lower (greater coronal plane downslope of the acromion) in both GHOA (difference between the means: -9.6°, 95% CI [-18.6°, -0.5°], P = .036) and RC tears (difference between the means: -9.9°, 95% CI [-19.0°, -0.9°], P = .029) compared with the control group. The intraclass correlation coefficients for intraobserver reliability demonstrated excellent reliability for the measurements (all >0.900)., Discussion: Scapulae associated with GHOA have lower GI, but no spatial differences in the location of the lateral acromion compared with a normal population. Scapulae associated with RC tears have a lower vertical offset of the lateral acromion, but no difference in horizontal offset or GI compared with a normal population. Evaluation of the bony anatomy of the glenohumeral joint is frequently required for surgical planning and subject-specific computational modeling and simulation. The three-dimensional geometry of bones is traditionally obtained by segmenting medical image datasets, but this can be time-consuming and may not be practical in the clinical setting. The aims of this study were twofold. Firstly, to develop and validate a statistical shape modeling approach to rapidly reconstruct the complete scapular and humeral geometries using discrete morphometric measurements that can be quickly and easily measured directly from CT, and secondly, to assess the effectiveness of statistical shape modeling in reconstruction of the entire humerus using just the landmarks in the immediate vicinity of the glenohumeral joint. The most representative shape prediction models presented in this study achieved complete scapular and humeral geometry prediction from seven or fewer morphometric measurements and yielded a mean surface root mean square (RMS) error under 2 mm. Reconstruction of the entire humerus was achieved using information of only proximal humerus bony landmarks and yielding mean surface RMS errors under 3 mm. The functions of the subclavius muscle (SM) are described as stabilization of the sternoclavicular joint (SCJ) and resisting elevation of the lateral end of the clavicle. During systematic cadaveric dissections, we observed additional fibrous structures, previously described as variants of the anatomy, extending from the SM and inserting into the coracoid process (CP). Due to the high incidence of these structures in our dissections, we hypothesized that the attachment at the CP is more common than appreciated and that, as a corollary, the function of the SM was (or has been) more complex than simply depressing the clavicle and generating stability at the SCJ. For our investigation, fifty-two upper extremities of 26 human cadavers were dissected. The SM was demonstrated from costal to clavicular attachment. We documented additional fibrous structures apparently derived from the SM inserting into the CP. Measurements of the length of the SM, the length of its attachment, and the length of the clavicle were taken in situ, with the specimens supine and the upper extremity in the anatomical position. Variations in the anatomy of the SM and its coracoidal attachment were recorded, and potential correlations were investigated. For documentation purposes photographs and video sequences of passive motion of the shoulder girdle of the specimens were taken. In 49 of the 52 specimens we found additional fibrous structures passing from the SM to the CP. We differentiated three types: (1) a strong cord-like structure; (2) a small or thin cord-like structure or structures; and (3) a planar twisted sheet-like structure. The SM and its extension to the CP appears to contribute to a 'functional scapular suspension system' together with the other muscles enveloped by the clavipectoral fascia (pectoralis minor, coracobrachialis and the short head of the biceps brachii). This system assists in the control of the position of the scapula in relation to the thorax, particularly in elevated positions of the upper extremity. Background: On the basis of the available literature, we proposed the hypothesis that the number of muscle bellies is morphologically constant. The main purpose of this study was to examine the morphological variability of the SM and to create a new classification of it based on number of muscle bellies., Methods: Sixty-six adult cadavers of Central European population (45 females, 21 males) were obtained and fixed in 10% formalin before examination., Results: The SM was found in all 66 specimens (45 females, 21 males, 31 left and 35 right sides). After meticulous dissection, we distinguished nine types on the basis of number of bellies. Type I was characterized by single belly and occurred in 1.5%. Type II had a double belly and was present in 3%. Type III, the most common type, occurring in almost 32% of the studied population, had three bellies. The frequency of type IV, characterized by four bellies, was also high, just over 30%. The following types were less frequent: type V with five bellies (18.2%), type VI with six bellies (7.6%), type VII with seven bellies (3%), type VIII with eight bellies (1.5%), and type IX with nine bellies (3%). All of the types had origin on the anterior surface of the scapula., Conclusions: The SM is morphologically variable in the number of its bellies. Evolutionary changes are probably the reason. The most common type was the SM with three bellies, in line with Larson's model of the division of the SM into three parts. The ca. 3.67 Ma adult skeleton known as 'Little Foot' (StW 573), recovered from Sterkfontein Member 2 breccia in the Silberberg Grotto, is remarkable for its morphology and completeness. Preservation of clavicles and scapulae, including essentially complete right-side elements, offers opportunities to assess morphological and functional aspects of a nearly complete Australopithecus pectoral girdle. Here we describe the StW 573 pectoral girdle and offer quantitative comparisons to those of extant hominoids and selected homininans. The StW 573 pectoral girdle combines features intermediate between those of humans and other apes: a long and curved clavicle, suggesting a relatively dorsally positioned scapula; an enlarged and uniquely proportioned supraspinous fossa; a relatively cranially oriented glenoid fossa; and ape-like reinforcement of the axillary margin by a stout ventral bar. StW 573 scapulae are as follows: smaller than those of some homininans (i.e., KSD-VP-1/1 and KNM-ER 47000A), larger than others (i.e., A.L. 288-1, Sts 7, and MH2), and most similar in size to another australopith from Sterkfontein, StW 431. Moreover, StW 573 and StW 431 exhibit similar structural features along their axillary margins and inferior angles. As the StW 573 pectoral girdle (e.g., scapular configuration) has a greater affinity to that of apes-Gorilla in particular-rather than modern humans, we suggest that the StW 573 morphological pattern appears to reflect adaptations to arboreal behaviors, especially those with the hand positioned above the head, more than human-like manipulatory capabilities. When compared with less complete pectoral girdles from middle/late Miocene apes and that of the penecontemporaneous KSD-VP-1/1 (Australopithecus afarensis), and mindful of consensus views on the adaptiveness of arboreal positional behaviors soliciting abducted glenohumeral joints in early Pliocene taxa, we propose that the StW 573 pectoral girdle is a reasonable model for hypothesizing pectoral girdle configuration of the crown hominin last common ancestor., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Ltd. The study of the muscular anatomy of wild boar (Sus scrofa) is important, because it allows the understanding of the locomotor and evolutionary aspects, besides the improvement of surgical techniques used by veterinarians in swine. Thus, the objective of this study was to describe the morphology and disposition of the shoulder and arm muscles of S. scrofa. Twelve young specimens of hybrid S. scrofa, six males and six females were fixed and dissected following usual anatomy techniques. The bones of two specimens were prepared to analyze the fixation points of the muscles. The shoulder muscles presented fixation at the scapula and humerus, in distinct bone accidents, and were divided on lateral and medial faces. On the lateral face, the deltoid (divided in acromial and scapular parts), supraspinatus, infraspinatus (divided in cranial and caudal parts) and teres minor (deep to the caudal part of the infraspinatus) muscles were found. In the medial face, the subscapular, coracobrachialis and teres major muscles were observed. The arm muscles were arranged essentially around the humerus and were seen largely on its medial face, namely biceps brachii (originated by a single tendon), brachialis, tensor fasciae antebrachii (fused with the long head of the triceps brachii), triceps brachii (divided in lateral, long and medial heads) and anconeus (located mostly on the lateral side) muscles. Thus, it can be concluded that the S. scrofa presented seven muscles in the shoulder region and six muscles in the arm region, all with morphological similarities to domestic and some wild animals. Some differences were found, for the most part, in the shape, division and fixation points of certain muscles.

Background: We investigated the branching pattern and topographic anatomy of the nerves to the teres minor (Tm) and the long head of the triceps brachii (LHT) in relation to reference lines extending between surface landmarks, to identify the innervation patterns of, and the optimal needle placement points within, the Tm and the LHT., Methods: The anatomical courses of the nerves to the Tm and the LHT were investigated in 37 upper limbs of fresh-frozen cadavers. Distances from the acromion to nerve penetration points, and crossing points of reference lines with the Tm and LHT were measured in 27 cadaveric upper limbs., Results: The Tm was innervated by the axillary nerve in all specimens in three patterns, and the LHT was innervated exclusively by the radial nerve. Our dissection and measurements indicate that the midpoint of the reference line from the acromion to the inferior angle of the scapula is the optimal needle insertion point for the Tm. The target point for the LHT appears to be the one-third point of the reference line from the acromion to the medial epicondyle, or the two-thirds point of the reference line from the acromion to the axillary fold., Conclusions: We investigated the branching pattern of the nerves to the Tm and the LHT and propose optimal needle placement points for electromyography of the Tm and LHT., (© 2020 Wiley Periodicals LLC.)

Context: Baseball pitching is a coordinated movement involving the spine. A previous study indicated that increased thoracic kyphosis angle in a standing position was a risk factor for medial elbow injuries in youth baseball players. However, spinal alignments in single-leg standing and their relationships with medial elbow injuries, scapular alignment, or hip joint range of motion are unclear., Objective: To examine the difference in spinal alignment between standing and single-leg standing positions in youth baseball players and analyze their relationship with elbow injuries, scapular alignment, or hip joint range of motion., Design: Cross-sectional study., Setting: University laboratory., Participants: There were 51 youth baseball players with medial epicondylar fragmentation (medial elbow injury group) and 102 healthy youth baseball players (control group)., Main Outcome Measures: Thoracic kyphosis, lumbar lordosis, and trunk inclination angles during standing and single-leg standing, forward scapular posture, and hip joint range of motion., Results: In the single-leg standing position, the thoracic kyphosis and backward trunk inclination angles were significantly higher in the medial elbow injury group than in the control group (P = .016 and P = .046, respectively). In the standing position, no significant difference was observed between both groups. The thoracic kyphosis angle in single-leg standing was positively correlated with the bilateral forward scapular posture in the medial elbow injury (P = .008 and P < .001 on the throwing and nonthrowing sides, respectively) and control (P = .010 and P = .032 on the throwing and nonthrowing sides, respectively) groups., Conclusions: High thoracic kyphosis and backward trunk inclination angles are characteristics during single-leg standing in youth baseball players with medial elbow injuries. Spinal alignment measurement in single-leg standing may be useful for identifying youth baseball players who are at risk for sustaining medial elbow injury.

Introduction: The superior surface of the anatomical neck is presented in the classification of scapular fractures as a 2-cm-long structure, which does not correspond to reality. This issue has not yet been adequately addressed in the literature. The aim of the study was to assess the variability of a notch between the upper rim of the glenoid and the coracoid base, the so-called coracoglenoid notch (CGN), and its clinical significance., Materials and Methods: The study was based on the examination of 204 dry bone specimens of adult scapulae (92 male and 112 female). We have determined quantitative criteria for the evaluation of the CGN type, measuring the offset of anatomical neck using a digital caliper. The findings were compared with 3D CT reconstructions of fractures of the scapular anatomical neck., Results: Three basic types of CGN have been identified: type A-a well-developed notch in 31%, type B-a shallow notch in 53% and type C-an absent notch in 16%. No significant difference in CGN was found between the sexes, or between the right and left sides. When compared with our six cases of the anatomical neck fracture of the scapula, two patients displayed CGN type A and type B, respectively; but in four patients, it was impossible to distinguish between types A and B., Conclusion: The study has documented a high variability of CGN. Its presentation in the classification schemes does not correspond to anatomical reality. The presence of a deep, or shallow, notch may constitute an anatomical predisposition to a fracture of the anatomical neck.

This study assesses the use of postcranial elements for sex estimation taking population variability into account. European American and Latin American populations are independently analyzed. Nine measurements from postcranial elements were collected from 72 European American individuals, and 59 Latin American individuals. Statistical analyses were performed using the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 15. Statistical analyses were conducted to corroborate that there were no intra- or interobserver errors. In both populations, significant differences were found on all measured traits between males and females, except Scapular Breadth in Latin Americans. According to Discriminant Function Analysis (DFA) in the European American population the Ulna Minimum Breadth of the Olecranon (UMBO) correctly classified 91.3% of individuals. When this parameter was combined with the Diameter of Humeral Head (HHD), the two correctly classified 98% of individuals. In Latin Americans, the UMBO correctly classified 82.4% of the individuals. When combined with HHD, the measurements correctly classified 79.4% individuals. UMBO is the most useful trait to correctly assign the sex of the remains in both populations. Including the HHD improved accuracy rates in the European American sample. These results are in agreement with previous studies, which named the humerus as one of the potentially useful bones to consider for sex estimation based on its accuracy. The objective of the present study was to model in 3D the detailed morphometric features of the thoracic and pelvic limb bones of the gazelle (Gazella subgutturosa), whose natural habitat is only in the Sanliurfa province, by using multidetector computerized tomography (MDCT) images. Materials from 14 (7 male and 7 female) dead gazelles were collected from the Harran University Veterinary Medicine Faculty clinics during or after treatment. MDCT images of the gazelles were taken and saved as DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) files. MIMICS 20.1 software was used to generate a 3D reconstruction of the data, and morphological and morphometrical evaluation was performed. In respect of morphological features, the combined metacarpus (Mc) III and metacarpus Mc IV were the main weight-bearing metacarpal bone, while Mc II and Mc V were rudimentary. On the femur, the lateral condyle was bigger than the medial condyle at the caudodistal end and the medial wing of the trochlea femoris was larger than the lateral. As with the thoracic limb, the combined metatarsus (Mt) III and metatarsus Mt IV were the main weight-bearing metacarpal bone and they displayed a synostosis structure. There was no secondary metatarsus in the gazelles' pelvic limb. Based on digital measurements, the tibia was the longest bone of the gazelles' skeletal system, and there was a statistically significant sexual dimorphism throughout the skeleton at the levels of p < .05, p < .01 and p < .001. Purpose: To measure the height of the posteroinferior glenohumeral ligament (PIGHL) attachment to the labrum and the depth of the posteroinferior labrum to the glenoid, macroscopically, and to investigate the morphology of the attachment of the posteroinferior labrum to the glenoid, histologically., Methods: Fifty cadaveric shoulders without exposed subchondral bone on the glenoid and detached posterior labrum were used. We examined the frequency of the heights of the PIGHL attachments to the labrum and the length of the labral attachment on the glenoid rim at the 7, 8, 9, and 10 o'clock positions, macroscopically. According to morphology of the histological labral attachments, it was divided into 3 groups. Labra attached on the articular surface and the glenoid neck were defined as the SN type, while labra attached only to the glenoid neck constituted labra attached to the bone and side of the articular cartilage (Nc type) and labra attached only to bone (Nb type)., Results: The PIGHL attached from 7 o'clock to 9 o'clock in 48 shoulders (96%). The mean labral attachment at the 7 o'clock position was 6.3 ± 1.0 mm (range, 4.6-9.4 mm), which was significantly longer than at the other positions (P < .05). Histologically, the frequency of SN type attachment was 49 (98%) shoulders at the 7 o'clock position., Conclusions: The PIGHL attached between 7 and 9 o'clock in 96% of the shoulders. In 98% of the shoulders, the labrum did not attach to the articular surface, but attached to both the articular cartilage and the bone of the glenoid neck at 7 o'clock., Clinical Relevance: The posteroinferior labrum should be repaired widely at the 7 o'clock position and not on the articular surface because the labrum attached anatomically to the glenoid neck., (Copyright © 2020 Arthroscopy Association of North America. Objectives: Reconstruction of the activity of past human populations can be carried out using various skeletal markers; however, the relationship between these methods is not fully understood. Therefore, the main aim of this article is to analyze the relationship between entheseal changes, cross-sectional properties, and variability in the shape of the upper limb., Materials and Methods: The analyzed material consisted of CT images of 71 right scapulae, humeri, and ulnae belonging to the same individuals from a mediaeval population located in Poland. For each series of bones for the same individual, skeletal markers such as: cross-sectional properties, entheses and shape variation were assessed. Next, correlations between these three skeletal indicators were calculated., Results: In general, the models showed that only sex influences entheses. Multivariate regression revealed significant correlation only between ulnar auricular surface shape and two types of mean score for entheses., Discussion: The findings are inconsistent and stand in contradiction to other research; therefore, we suggest that an assessment of individual activity should be carried out, using as many post-cranial elements as possible and a variety of methods. Variation in the shape of the glenoid and periarticular anatomy of the scapula has been associated with shoulder pathology. The goal of this study was to identify the modes of shape variation of periarticular scapular anatomy in relation to the glenoid in nonpathologic shoulders. Computed tomography scans of 31 cadaveric scapulae, verified to be free of pathology, were three-dimensionally reconstructed. Statistical shape modeling and principal component analysis identified the modes of shape variation across the population. Corresponding linear and angular measurements quantified the morphometric variance identified by the modes. Linear measures were normalized to the radius of the inferior glenoid to account for differences in the scaling of the bones. Five modes captured 89.7% of total shape variation of the glenoid and periarticular anatomy. Apart from size differences (mode 1: 33.0%), acromial anatomy accounted for the largest variation (mode 2: 32.0%). Further modes described variation in glenoid inclination (mode 3: 11.8%), coracoid orientation and size (mode 4: 9.0%), and variation in coracoacromial (CA) morphology (mode 5: 3.1%). The average scapula had a mean acromial tilt of 49 ± 7°, scapular spine angle of 61 ± 6°, the glenoid inclination of 84 ± 4°, coracoid deviation angle of 26 ± 4°, coracoid length of 3.7 ± 0.3 glenoid radii, and a CA base length of 5.6 ± 0.5 radii. In this study, the identified shape modes explain almost all of the variance in scapular anatomy. External morphological metrics have featured prominently in comparative studies examining the morphological convergence that characterizes anoline ecomorphs. To what degree the appendicular-skeletal morphology of Greater Antillean island Anolis lizards tracks their diversity and ecological adaptation, however, remains relatively unexplored. Here we employ computed tomographic scanning techniques to visualize in situ the scapulocoracoid of ecomorph representatives (trunk-ground, trunk-crown, crown-giant, twig) from three islands (Jamaica, Hispaniola, and Puerto Rico), and compare its three-dimensional geometry using qualitative-descriptive and quantitative-morphometric techniques. In contrast to our previous, similarly-conducted study of the pelvic girdle of these same species, the form of the scapulocoracoid varies markedly both within and between species, with much of the variation relating to phylogenetic relationship, specimen size, and assigned ecomorph category. Morphometric variation that correlates with size and/or phylogenetic signal varies between species and cannot be eliminated from the data set without markedly reducing its overall variability. The discovered patterns of skeletal variation are consistent with the demands of locomotor mechanics imposed by the structural configuration of the microhabitat of these ecomorphs. Most pertinently the ecomorphs differ in the anteroposterior length of the coracoid, the dorsoventral height of the scapulocoracoid, the dorsoventral height of the scapula in relation to the height of the suprascapula, and the relative positioning of the borders of the scapulocoracoid fenestra. In the examined ecomorph categories these skeletal differences likely relate to microhabitat usage by permitting different degrees of tilting and displacement of the scapulocoracoid in the parasagittal plane and influencing the sizes of muscle origins and the vectors of their actions. These differences relate to the amount of humeral adduction applied during its protraction, and to the structural stability of the shoulder girdle during acrobatic maneuvers, thus influencing the perch diameter that can be effectively negotiated, a critical factor in the microhabitat structure of Anolis ecomorphs., (Crown Copyright © 2020. Background: Bennett lesions represent an extra-articular ossification on the posteroinferior aspect of the glenoid fossa and a potential source of posterior shoulder pain and limitation. The prevalence of Bennett lesions in the general population is unknown., Materials and Methods: A total of 5,662 scapulae from 2,831 individual cadaveric specimens greater than 18 years of age at the time of death were examined. Matching scapulae were evaluated for Bennett lesions by two independent authors. Lesion prevalence was calculated and statistical analysis performed to evaluate differences in prevalence based on specimen sex (males vs. females), ancestry (African-American vs. Caucasian) and with increasing age at the time of death., Results: Bennett lesions were observed in 3.5% (n = 98 of 2,831) of specimens and 1.8% (n = 104 of 5,662) of scapulae. Interobserver reliability was 0.83, indicating excellent agreement among authors. Males possessed significant higher odds of possessing a Bennett lesion when compared to females (p = .009) and African-American specimens when compared to Caucasian specimens (p < .001). Each additional year of age was associated with a 1.4% increase in odds of a specimen having a Bennett lesion, while no significant increase in Bennett lesion prevalence was appreciated with increasing specimen age at the time of death when comparing male to female specimens (p = .07) or African-American to Caucasian specimens (p = .73)., Conclusions: Bennett lesions were identified in 3.5% of osseous specimens and 1.8% of scapulae, with significantly higher prevalence in male and African-American specimens., (© 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

Knowledge about bone morphology and bone quality of the scapula throughout the population is fundamental in the design of shoulder implants. In particular, regions with the best bone stock (cortical bone) are taken into account when planning the supporting screws, aiming for an optimal fixation. As an alternative to manual measurements, statistical shape models (SSMs) have been commonly used to describe shape variability within a population. However, explicitly including cortical thickness information in an SSM of the scapula still remains a challenge. Therefore, the goal of this study is to combine scapular bone shape and cortex morphology in an SSM. First, a method to estimate cortical thickness, based on HU (Hounsfield Unit) profile analysis, was developed and validated. Then, based on the manual segmentations of 32 healthy scapulae, a statistical shape model including cortical information was created and evaluated. Generalization, specificity and compactness were calculated in order to assess the quality of the SSM. The average cortical thickness of the SSM was 2.0 ± 0.63 mm. Generalization, specificity and compactness performances confirmed that the combined SSM was able to capture the bone quality changes in the population. In this work we integrated information on the cortical thickness in an SSM for the scapula. From the results we conclude that this methodology is a valuable tool for automatically generating a large population of scapulae and deducing statistics on the cortex. Hence, this SSM can be useful to automate implant design and screw placement in shoulder arthroplasty.

The aim of this study was to provide morphometric, anatomic and radiographic data of the thoracic limb bones of the Patagonian Huemul (Hippocamelus bisulcus) including a functional interpretation of this, as a reference for clinical use, biomedical research and teaching purposes. Currently, the Patagonian huemul deer is in danger of becoming extinct due to multiple causes. Research carried out for its conservation has focused mainly on its ecology and pathology, leaving gaps in biological knowledge, which is basic and important for its comprehension. This study was conducted to reveal the gross osteology and radiology features of the thoracic limb bones of the Patagonian huemul deer. The osteological findings suggest the presence of powerful flexor muscles in the scapulohumeral and elbow joints, useful to cushion the jumps. Also, the principal nutrient foramen of Patagonian huemul differs in position with respect to domestic ungulates, which may be important to consider during surgical procedures. Finally, the radiographic data can provide new information about the tissue loading conditions in Patagonian huemul, so that this new knowledge can be of great importance for a better understanding of mechanically induced or adaptive changes in bone produced by habitat or other ecological phenomena., (© 2020 Blackwell Verlag GmbH.)

Background: The shape of pig scapula is complex and is important for sow robustness and health. To better understand the relationship between 3D shape of the scapula and functional traits, it is necessary to build a model that explains most of the morphological variation between animals. This requires point correspondence, i.e. a map that explains which points represent the same piece of tissue among individuals. The objective of this study was to further develop an automated computational pipeline for the segmentation of computed tomography (CT) scans to incorporate 3D modelling of the scapula, and to develop a genetic prediction model for 3D morphology., Results: The surface voxels of the scapula were identified on 2143 CT-scanned pigs, and point correspondence was established by predicting the coordinates of 1234 semi-landmarks on each animal, using the coherent point drift algorithm. A subsequent principal component analysis showed that the first 10 principal components covered more than 80% of the total variation in 3D shape of the scapula. Using principal component scores as phenotypes in a genetic model, estimates of heritability ranged from 0.4 to 0.8 (with standard errors from 0.07 to 0.08). To validate the entire computational pipeline, a statistical model was trained to predict scapula shape based on marker genotype data. The mean prediction reliability averaged over the whole scapula was equal to 0.18 (standard deviation = 0.05) with a higher reliability in convex than in concave regions., Conclusions: Estimates of heritability of the principal components were high and indicated that the computational pipeline that processes CT data to principal component phenotypes was associated with little error. Furthermore, we showed that it is possible to predict the 3D shape of scapula based on marker genotype data. Taken together, these results show that the proposed computational pipeline closes the gap between a point cloud representing the shape of an animal and its underlying genetic components.

Odd-nosed monkeys 'arm-swing' more frequently than other colobines. They are therefore somewhat behaviorally analogous to atelines and apes. Scapular morphology regularly reflects locomotor mode, with both arm-swinging and climbing anthropoids showing similar characteristics, especially a mediolaterally narrow blade and cranially angled spine and glenoid. However, these traits are not expressed uniformly among anthropoids. Therefore, behavioral convergences in the odd-nosed taxa of Nasalis, Pygathrix, and Rhinopithecus with hominoids may not have resulted in similar structural convergences. We therefore used a broad sample of anthropoids to test how closely odd-nosed monkey scapulae resemble those of other arm-swinging primates. We used principal component analyses on size-corrected linear metrics and angles that reflect scapular size and shape in a broad sample of anthropoids. As in previous studies, our first component separated terrestrial and above-branch quadrupeds from clambering and arm-swinging taxa. On this axis, odd-nosed monkeys were closer than other colobines to modern apes and Ateles. All three odd-nosed genera retain glenoid orientations that are more typical of other colobines, but Pygathrix and Rhinopithecus are closer to hominoids than to other Asian colobines in mediolateral blade breadth, spine angle, and glenoid position. This suggests that scapular morphology of Pygathrix may reflect a significant reliance on arm-swinging and that the morphology of Rhinopithecus may reflect more reliance on general climbing. As 'arm-swinging' features are also found in taxa that only rarely arm-swing, we hypothesize that these features are also adaptive for scrambling and bridging in larger bodied anthropoids that use the fine-branch component of their arboreal niches., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier Ltd. Tamandua mexicana is a mammal of the superorder Xenarthra geographically located between Mexico and Peru that remains insufficiently studied. These species are characterized by their movement, resting, and eating of termites and ants in arboreal and terrestrial environments, and therefore, their thoracic limbs have been adapted morphologically to move in these environments. Tamandua mexicana is a species constantly threatened by different causes, and their thoracic limbs can be affected in the scapular and shoulder regions as a result; therefore, specific anatomical knowledge of the scapula allows for better clinical procedures, surgical approaches, radiological diagnosis and muscular reconstructions in extinct species of anteaters. The main objective of this study was to report the anatomical and radiographic features of the scapula in juvenile and adult specimens of T. mexicana. Gross dissections and radiographic study were performed in six cadavers. The scapula had large differences compared with other mammals, such as two spines, a foramen for the suprascapular nerve, a long acromion, a cranial transverse scapular ligament and caudolateral fossa for the origin of the muscles teres major, tensor fasciae antebrachii and subscapular. In juvenile specimens, a scapular cartilage, an acromial cartilage, craniomedial and caudolateral coracoscapular ligaments forming the foramen for the suprascapular nerve, and progressive ossification of those ligaments and the cranial transverse scapular ligament were observed. These findings were corroborated by radiography; therefore, these characteristics change with age.
