Abstract

Quaternary glass series of nano and micro-particles europium oxide (III), i.e. Eu2O3, of composition [{(TeO2)0.7 (B2O3)0.3}0.7 (ZnO)0.3](1-y) (EnOm)y, where EnOm is nano or micro Eu2O3 particles coded as TBZEu-NPs and TBZEu-MPs with y = 1.0–5.0 mol% was prepared by melt-quenching technique. Using the pulse-echo technique, the ultrasonic velocities of the glasses were examined. The experimental value of TBZEu-NPs longitudinal, shear, bulk, and Young's modulus ranges between 53.469 and 85.259 GPa, 21.801–24.086 GPa, 24.401–54.790 GPa, and 50.394–61.419 GPa, respectively. For the TBZEu-MPs glasses, they ranged from 46.335 to 87.365 GPa, 21.645–24.649 GPa, 17.475–54.499 GPa, and 45.959–64.260 GPa, respectively. Density and elastic properties were predicted and simulated using an artificial neural network (ANN) model. The correlation coefficients for density, elastic moduli, and Poison's ratio obtained using the ANN model range from 0.9881 to 0.9997. The fitted R-squared value is greater than 95%, and the percentage error calculated is less than 7%. The obtained results were compared to those obtained using the Makishima-Mackenzie elastic model. The prepared glass sample's physical properties and elastic constants indicate that they are sufficiently strong for laser applications.

Abstract

The TCV tokamak ( R = 0.88 m, κ = 2.5, are produced at low normalized current using far off-axis EC heating (ECH) and ECCD to broaden the current profile. Third harmonic heating is used to heat the plasma center where the second harmonic is in cut-off. Both second and third harmonic heating are used to heat H-mode plasmas, at the edge and center, respectively. The ELM frequency is decreased by the additional power but in separate experiments can be controlled by locking to an external perturbation current in the internal coils of TCV. Spatially resolved current profiles are measured at the inner and outer divertor targets by Langmuir probe arrays during ELMs. The strong, reasonably balanced currents are thought to be thermoelectric in origin.

Abstract

Evidence from injection into the TCV device of laser ablated, non-recycling silicon impurities shows that the transport of impurities confinement can be remarkably different from that of energy. The ratio of impurity to energy confinement times ranges from near unity in Ohmic discharges to 5 in the presence of high power ECCD. In Ohmic discharges in deuterium, above a threshold of density and of safety factor near q(95) = 4.5, the impurity confinement time increases abruptly by a factor of 2 and is sometimes accompanied by indefinite retention of non-recycling impurities within the sawtooth mixing radius.

Abstract

The operating space of the TCV tokamak has been extended to higher elongation, kappa = 2.8, and higher normalized current, I-N = I-p/aB = 3.6MA/mT, than were previously attainable. This has been achieved by optimizing the parameters of the vertical position control system and by optimizing the plasma shape. Experimental current and beta limits were found to be consistent with ideal MHD stability calculations, using measured plasma shapes and profiles. The sawtooth period was measured as a function of elongation and sawtooth oscillations are found to disappear, at high elongation, when the internal inductance drops below l(i) similar to 0.69. MHD events at high elongation have been analysed, using magnetic fluctuation measurements. The electron energy confinement time at high elongation, 2.2 < kappa < 2.7, shows a strong dependence on density and power flux through the plasma surface, but no statistically significant dependence on K. Finally, we have applied off-axis, second harmonic, X-mode electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) in order to flatten the current profile and improve vertical stability. This gave access to previously inaccessible domains in kappa-IN space.

Abstract

The extreme shaping capabilities of the TCV tokamak have been used to investigate the effect of plasma geometry on the confinement of non-recycling trace impurities injected by means of the laser blow-off technique. The progression of the injected silicon in the core of TCV Ohmic limiter plasmas was followed by the 200-channel soft x-ray (SXR) photodiode array with good spatial and temporal resolution. The results show that the plasma triangularity and elongation play an important role in the impurity confinement time, tau(imp). Remarkably, the increase of elongation from kappa = 1.6 to 2.3 produces a threefold reduction of tau(imp) while the electron energy confinement time, tau(Ee), remains almost constant. tau(imp) is fairly constant in the triangularity scan for delta > 0.2, while there is a marked increase for lower values, leading to tau(imp) > 100 ms for negative triangularities. The increase of the toroidal magnetic field, B-T, from B-T = 0.92 to 1.47 T produces a decrease in the confinement time by almost a factor of 2. Simulation of the evolution of the line-integrated SXR signals, performed by the one-dimensional code STRAHL, provided both central and peripheral values of the transport coefficients together with estimates of the radial profiles. The simulations show that anomalous transport is dominant over neoclassical transport, except near the plasma centre. Interestingly, the convective velocity is positive (outwardly directed) in all limiter cases.

Abstract

This paper presents experimental results on the accessibility and the properties of plasmas with improved confinement in TCV. First, the H-mode threshold power is measured in Ohmic plasmas. Above an Ohmic threshold density, the threshold power increases with the density. A lower threshold density is found when additional electron cyclotron heating (ECH) is applied. At these low densities, the threshold power increases dramatically with decreasing density. Only a small fraction of the wide operational domain leading to the Ohmic H-mode is found to lead to a stationary regime with edge localized modes (ELMs). The ELMs have an irregular frequency, but in TCV they can be triggered by an external magnetic perturbation that induces a rapid vertical movement of the plasma. With this perturbation, the ELM frequency can be increased. The ELM triggering mechanism is provided by the vertical movement of the plasma away from the X-point of a single null configuration. This movement induces a positive current at the plasma edge, and we deduce that the ELMs are being controlled by this modification of the plasma edge current. Electron internal transport barriers (eITBs) are produced deep in the plasma during the stationary phase of TCV discharges. Different scenarios of ECH or selectron cyclotron current drive (ECCD) at different radial locations have been used to obtain eITBs with and without inductively driven current. The eITBs are characterized by steep electron temperature gradients, high confinement improvement and a large fraction of bootstrap current. In plasmas with fully non-inductively driven current the size and the strength of the eITB are controlled by the location of the power deposition and by the co- or counter-direction of the central ECCD. Finally, a small inductive perturbation of an otherwise non-inductively driven plasma current profile progressively shrinks the eITB, confirming the link between current profiles and eITBs.

Linear regression analyses showed that poor sleep quality was significantly associated with reduced participation frequency (β = –0.30, P = 0.03) and less satisfaction with participation (β = –0.49, P < 0.001). Moreover, age, number of hours slept at night, and time since injury were associated with satisfaction with participation. Conclusions: An association was found between sleep quality and participation in people with SCI. Given the high prevalence of sleep problems and their association with all dimensions of participation, the promotion of sleep quality should be encouraged because it may positively affect participation.

41. Three-Dimensional Printing of Triboelectric Nanogenerators by Digital Light Processing Technique for Mechanical Energy Harvesting.

Abstract

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) represent intriguing technology to harvest human mechanical movements for powering wearable and portable electronics. Differently, compared to conventional fabrication approaches, additive manufacturing can allow the fabrication of TENGs with good dimensional resolution, high reproducibility, and quick production processes and, in particular, the obtainment of complex and customized structures. Among 3D printing technologies, digital light processing (DLP) is well-known for being the most flexible to produce functional devices by controlling both the geometry and the different ingredients of printable resins. On the other hand, DLP was not exploited for TENG fabrication, and consequently, the knowledge of the performance of 3D printable materials as charge accumulators upon friction is limited. Here, the application of the DLP technique to the 3D printing of triboelectric nanogenerators is studied. First, several printable materials have been tested as triboelectric layers to define a triboelectric series of DLP 3D printable materials. Then, TENG devices with increased geometrical complexity were printed, showcasing the ability to harvest energy from human movement. The method presented in this work illustrates how the DLP may represent a valuable and flexible solution to fabricate triboelectric nanogenerators, also providing a triboelectric classification of the most common photocurable resins.

Abstract

Objectives: Return visit (RV) to the emergency department (ED) is considered a benchmarking clinical indicator for health care quality. The purpose of this study was to develop a predictive model for early readmission risk in pediatric EDs comparing the performances of 2 learning machine algorithms., Methods: A retrospective study based on all children younger than 15 years spontaneously returning within 120 hours after discharge was conducted in an Italian university children's hospital between October 2012 and April 2013. Two predictive models, artificial neural network (ANN) and classification tree (CT), were used. Accuracy, specificity, and sensitivity were assessed., Results: A total of 28,341 patient records were evaluated. Among them, 626 patients returned to the ED within 120 hours after their initial visit. Comparing ANN and CT, our analysis has shown that CT is the best model to predict RVs. The CT model showed an overall accuracy of 81%, slightly lower than the one achieved by the ANN (91.3%), but CT outperformed ANN with regard to sensitivity (79.8% vs 6.9%, respectively). The specificity was similar for the 2 models (CT, 97% vs ANN, 98.3%). In addition, the time of arrival and discharge along with the priority code assigned in triage, age, and diagnosis play a pivotal role to identify patients at high risk of RVs., Conclusions: These models provide a promising predictive tool for supporting the ED staff in preventing unnecessary RVs.

Abstract

Waste collection widely depends on the route optimization problem that involves a large amount of expenditure in terms of capital, labor, and variable operational costs. Thus, the more waste collection route is optimized, the more reduction in different costs and environmental effect will be. This study proposes a modified particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm in a capacitated vehicle-routing problem (CVRP) model to determine the best waste collection and route optimization solutions. In this study, threshold waste level (TWL) and scheduling concepts are applied in the PSO-based CVRP model under different datasets. The obtained results from different datasets show that the proposed algorithmic CVRP model provides the best waste collection and route optimization in terms of travel distance, total waste, waste collection efficiency, and tightness at 70-75% of TWL. The obtained results for 1 week scheduling show that 70% of TWL performs better than all node consideration in terms of collected waste, distance, tightness, efficiency, fuel consumption, and cost. The proposed optimized model can serve as a valuable tool for waste collection and route optimization toward reducing socioeconomic and environmental impacts., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract

Waste collection is an important part of waste management that involves different issues, including environmental, economic, and social, among others. Waste collection optimization can reduce the waste collection budget and environmental emissions by reducing the collection route distance. This paper presents a modified Backtracking Search Algorithm (BSA) in capacitated vehicle routing problem (CVRP) models with the smart bin concept to find the best optimized waste collection route solutions. The objective function minimizes the sum of the waste collection route distances. The study introduces the concept of the threshold waste level (TWL) of waste bins to reduce the number of bins to be emptied by finding an optimal range, thus minimizing the distance. A scheduling model is also introduced to compare the feasibility of the proposed model with that of the conventional collection system in terms of travel distance, collected waste, fuel consumption, fuel cost, efficiency and CO 2 emission. The optimal TWL was found to be between 70% and 75% of the fill level of waste collection nodes and had the maximum tightness value for different problem cases. The obtained results for four days show a 36.80% distance reduction for 91.40% of the total waste collection, which eventually increases the average waste collection efficiency by 36.78% and reduces the fuel consumption, fuel cost and CO 2 emission by 50%, 47.77% and 44.68%, respectively. Thus, the proposed optimization model can be considered a viable tool for optimizing waste collection routes to reduce economic costs and environmental impacts., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract

Background: Electronic cigarette smoking is spreading among health care professionals. E-cigarette smoke effects on health are not known, especially long-term effects., Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the phenomenon of electronic cigarettes as regards smoking habits, knowledge and opinions of health care professionals., Methods: A multicentre cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted by administering an online questionnaire to all the health care professionals employed in two hospitals., Results: The population included 800 employees. More than half (66.8%) of respondents believed the e-cigarette is potentially harmful and capable of attracting young people to smoking and 38.8% of respondents believed that it can serve to stop smoking. The male gender was statistically associated with tobacco and e-cigarette smoking (p=0.034). The electronic cigarette was smoked little at the work place. The population studied did not have any specific knowledge about e-cigarettes and asked for specific training; the population knew the ban on the sale of e-cigarettes to underaged and emphasized the importance of specific management guidelines., Conclusions: The results of the study show the predominantly negative opinion of health professionals concerning the use of electronic cigarette. Moreover, the study results contributed to an improvement of the smoking policies in the hospitals studied.
