The California State Mussel Watch and the Regional Monitoring Program for Trace Substances have conducted biomonitoring for trace elements and organic contaminants in the San Francisco Estuary using transplanted bivalves (Mytilus californianus, Crassostrea gigas, and Corbicula fluminea). Significant declines (p<0.01) in contaminant concentrations in M. californianus for the period 1980-1996 were observed for PCBs, p,p'-DDE, cis-chlordane, dieldrin, and Ag, while a significant increase was observed for Cr (p<0.05). Certain limitations of the 'mussel watch' approach are illustrated by examining data on survival, body condition, and contaminant uptake, including the inability of the technique to predict accumulation of mercury and selenium at higher trophic levels in the ecosystem. These results indicate that biomonitoring using transplanted bivalves, when part of a consistently supported long-term program, can produce valuable data on the spatially and temporally averaged abundance and distribution of certain contaminants in coastal ecosystems. The valorization of ultra-concentrated seawater brines, named bitterns, requires preliminary purification processes, such as membrane filtration, before they can be fully exploited. This study investigates the performance of an ultrafiltration pilot plant aimed at separating organic matter and large particles from real bitterns. An empirical model for the bittern viscosity was developed to better characterize the membrane. Distinct variations in permeability, fouling resistance and rejection coefficient were observed under operational pressures ranging from 2 to 4 bar. Working at low pressure (2 bar), the pilot plant achieves permeability and rejection coefficient values of 17 L/m 2 hbar and 95%, respectively. Foulant behavior was characterized by determining a "fouling resistance", obtaining an average value of 1013 m -1 . Tests with three distinct bittern samples were conducted to assess the influence of chemical composition and organic matter content on membrane permeability and fouling characteristics. The collected data enabled a comprehensive characterization of the ultrafiltration pilot unit working with this particular saline feed solution, which has very high technical-economic potential.

The renewed interest in the possibility that primordial black holes (PBHs) may constitute a significant part of dark matter has provided motivation for revisiting old observational constraints, as well as developing new ones. We present new limits on the PBH abundance, from a comprehensive analysis of high-resolution high-redshift Lyman-α forest data. Poisson fluctuations in the PBH number density induce a small-scale power enhancement which departs from the standard cold dark matter prediction. Using a grid of hydrodynamic simulations exploring different values of astrophysical parameters, we obtain a marginalized upper limit on the PBH mass of f&#95;{PBH}M&#95;{PBH}∼60M&#95;{⊙} at 2σ, when a Gaussian prior on the reionization redshift is imposed, preventing its posterior distribution from peaking on very high values, which are disfavored by the most recent estimates obtained both through cosmic microwave background and intergalactic medium observations. Such a bound weakens to f&#95;{PBH}M&#95;{PBH}∼170M&#95;{⊙} when a conservative flat prior is instead assumed. Both limits significantly improve on previous constraints from the same physical observable. We also extend our predictions to nonmonochromatic PBH mass distributions, ruling out large regions of the parameter space for some of the most viable PBH extended mass functions.

Lead pollution was investigated in environmental matrices and biological indicators collected from two typical subtropical coastal ecosystems in the southeast Gulf of California, Mexico. Lead concentrations and isotopic compositions ((206)Pb/(207)Pb and (208)Pb/(207)Pb) were measured using high resolution inductively-coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (HR-ICP-MS) and thermal ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS), respectively. Lead in surface estuary sediments (10.0-34.2microgg(-1)) and particulate Pb (25.0-128.7microgg(-1), >98% of total Pb) in the water column were significantly higher than levels in natural bedrock soils (15.1+/-8.3microgg(-1)) and river runoff (1.9+/-1.4microgg(-1)). Aquatic plants had Pb concentrations between 2.5 and 7.2microgg(-1), while those in macroalgae ranged from 3 to 5microgg(-1). The ranges of mean Pb concentrations in the aquatic animals studied (ranges in microgg(-1)) were as follows: zooplankton 32+/-3, mussels 2.3-3.9, oysters 1.9-7.9, snail 2.0-7.7, barnacles 0.1-18.5, fish 1.4-8.9, crab 6.3-40.2 and polychaetae 8.5-16.7. Pb values in 20-40% of oyster and fish samples and in all samples of crab exceeded acceptable levels for a food source for human consumption. Pb isotope ratios (206)Pb/(207)Pb, (208)Pb/(207)Pb in biota ranged from 1.188 to 1.206 and 2.448 to 2.470, respectively. A plot of (206)Pb/(207)Pb versus (208)Pb/(207)Pb for the environmental and biological samples collected from two study areas indicates that they contain lead from ores mined in Mexico and used in the past to produce leaded gasoline in use until 1997, natural Pb weathered from the Sierra Madre Occidental mother rock, and the later influence of inputs from a more radiogenic source related to industrial activity in the United States. Statistical software IsoSource results revealed that the Pb contained in environmental matrices and biomonitors is mostly derived from gasoline (20-90%) and US emissions (10-40%).
