Spectroscopic photoemission microscopy is a well-established method to investigate the electronic structure of surfaces. In modern photoemission microscopes the electron optics allows imaging of the image plane, momentum plane, or dispersive plane, depending on the lens setting. Furthermore, apertures allow filtering of energy-, real-, and momentum space. Here, we describe how a standard spectroscopic and low energy electron microscope can be equipped with an additional slit at the entrance of the already present hemispherical analyzer to enable an angle- and energy resolved photoemission mode with micrometer spatial selectivity. We apply a photogrammetric calibration to correct for image distortions of the projective system behind the analyzer and present spectra recorded on Au(111) as a benchmark. We calculate the dynamic structure factor S (omega, q) of spinless fermions in one dimension with quadratic energy dispersion k^2/2m and long range density-density interaction whose Fourier transform f_q is dominated by small momentum-transfers q << q_0 << k_F. Here q_0 is a momentum-transfer cutoff and k_F is the Fermi momentum. Using functional bosonization and the known properties of symmetrized closed fermion loops, we obtain an expansion of the inverse irreducible polarization to second order in the small parameter q_0 / k_F. In contrast to perturbation theory based on conventional bosonization, our functional bosonization approach is not plagued by mass-shell singularities. For interactions which can be expanded as f_q = f_0 + f_0^{2} q^2/2 + O (q^4) with finite f_0^{2} we show that the momentum scale q_c = 1/ | m f_0^{2} | separates two regimes characterized by a different q-dependence of the width gamma_q of the collective zero sound mode and other features of S (omega, q). For q_c << q << k_F we find that the line-shape in this regime is non-Lorentzian with an overall width gamma_q of order q^3/(m q_c) and a threshold singularity at the lower edge., Comment: 33 Revtex pages, 17 figures

We discuss the statistics of Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) in a canonical ensemble of N non-interacting bosons in terms of a Landau function L_N^{BEC} (q) defined by the logarithm of the probability distribution of the order parameter q for BEC. We also discuss the corresponding Landau function for spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB), which for finite N should be distinguished from L_N^{BEC}. Only for intinite N BEC and SSB can be described by the same Landau function which depends on the dimensionality and on the form of the external potential in a surprisingly complex manner. We generalize our recently developed super-field functional renormalization group (RG) method involving both Fermi and Bose fields [F. Schuetz, L. Bartosch, and P. Kopietz, Phys. Rev. B 72, 035105 (2005)] to include the possibility that some bosonic components of the field have a finite vacuum expectation value. We derive an exact hierarchy of flow equations for the one-line irreducible vertices and the vacuum expectation value of the field. We apply our method to an interacting Fermi system where the interaction can be decoupled in the zero-sound channel and is then mediated by a collective bosonic field. The vacuum expectation value of the zero-frequency and zero-momentum component of the bosonic field is then closely related to the fermionic density. This can be exploited to calculate the compressibility of the interacting system. By using a cutoff in the bosonic propagator, the RG can be set up such that the self-consistent Hartree approximation is imposed as initial condition for the RG flow and the corrections to this approximation are generated as the remaining degrees of freedom are successively eliminated by the RG procedure., Comment: 15 pages, 2 figures; published version, some typos corrected; special issue "Renormalization Group 2005" of JPA. We derive the effective long-wavelength Euclidean action for the antiferromagnetic spin-waves of ordered quantum antiferromagnets subject to a uniform magnetic field. We point out that the magnetic field dependence of the spin-wave dispersion predicted by the usual O(3)-quantum nonlinear sigma model disagrees with spin-wave theory. We argue that the nonlinear sigma model does not take into account all relevant spin-wave interactions and derive a modified effective action for the long-wavelength spin-waves which contains an additional quartic interaction. For temperatures T well above the ordering temperature T*=3.0+-0.2K the magnetic properties of the metal-organic material Mn[C10H6(OH)(COO)]2x2H20 built from Mn^2+ ions and 3-hydroxy-2-naphthoic anions can be described by a S=5/2 quantum antiferromagnet on a distorted honeycomb lattice with two different nearest neighbor exchange couplings J2 \approx 2J1 \approx 1.8K. We develop a new formulation of the functional renormalization group (RG) for interacting fermions. Our approach unifies the purely fermionic formulation based on the Grassmannian functional integral, which has been used in recent years by many authors, with the traditional Wilsonian RG approach to quantum systems pioneered by Hertz [Phys. Rev. B 14, 1165 (1976)], which attempts to describe the infrared behavior of the system in terms of an effective bosonic theory associated with the soft modes of the underlying fermionic problem. In our approach, we decouple the interaction by means of a suitable Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation (following the Hertz-approach), but do not eliminate the fermions; instead, we derive an exact hierarchy of RG flow equations for the irreducible vertices of the resulting coupled field theory involving both fermionic and bosonic fields. The freedom of choosing a momentum transfer cutoff for the bosonic soft modes in addition to the usual band cutoff for the fermions opens the possibility of new RG schemes. In particular, we show how the exact solution of the Tomonaga-Luttinger model emerges from the functional RG if one works with a momentum transfer cutoff. Then the Ward identities associated with the local particle conservation at each Fermi point are valid at every stage of the RG flow and provide a solution of an infinite hierarchy of flow equations for the irreducible vertices. The RG flow equation for the irreducible single-particle self-energy can then be closed and can be reduced to a linear integro-differential equation, the solution of which yields the result familiar from bosonization. We discuss the proper definition of the spin current operator in Heisenberg magnets subject to inhomogeneous magnetic fields. We argue that only the component of the naive "current operator" J_ij S_i x S_j in the plane spanned by the local order parameters and is related to real transport of magnetization. Within a mean field approximation or in the classical ground state the spin current therefore vanishes. Using a modified spin-wave approach, we show that in the presence of an inhomogeneous magnetic field or an in plane inhomogeneous electric field a mesoscopic antiferromagnetic Heisenberg ring with integer spin (i.e., a Haldane gap system) exhibits a persistent circulating spin current. Due to quantum fluctuations the current has a finite limit on the order of -g mu_B c/L at zero temperature, provided the staggered correlation length xi exceeds the circumference L of the ring, in close analogy to ballistic charge currents in mesoscopic normal metal rings. We show that at low temperatures T an inhomogeneous radial magnetic field with magnitude B gives rise to a persistent magnetization current around a mesoscopic ferromagnetic Heisenberg ring. Under optimal conditions this spin current can be as large as g mu_B (T / hbar) exp [ - 2 pi (g mu_B B / Delta )^1/2 ], as obtained from leading-order spin-wave theory. Here g is the gyromagnetic factor, mu_B is the Bohr magneton, and Delta is the energy gap between the ground state and the first spin-wave excitation.
