Abstract

Icy pebbles may play an important role in planet formation close to the water ice line of protoplanetary discs. There, dust coagulation is more efficient and re-condensation of vapor on pebbles may enhance their growth outside the ice line. Previous theoretical studies showed that disruption of icy pebbles due to sublimation increases the growth rate of pebbles inside and outside the ice line, by freeing small silicate particles back in the dust reservoir of the disc. However, since planet accretion is dependent on the Stokes number of the accreting pebbles, the growth of planetesimals could be enhanced downstream of the ice line if pebbles are not disrupting upon sublimation. We developed two experimental models of icy pebbles using different silicate dusts, and we exposed them to low-temperature and low-pressure conditions in a vacuum chamber. Increasing the temperature inside the chamber, we studied the conditions for which pebbles are preserved through sublimation without disrupting. We find that small silicate particles ($<50$um) and a small quantity of ice (around $15$% pebble mass) are optimal conditions for preserving pebbles through sublimation. Furthermore, pebbles with coarse dust distribution ($100-300$um) do not disrupt if a small percentage ($10-20$% mass) of dust grains are smaller than $50$um. Our findings highlight how sublimation is not necessarily causing disruption, and that pebbles seem to survive fast sublimation processes effectively.

Abstract

The Mott transistor is a paradigm for a new class of electronic devices---often referred to by the term Mottronics---, which are based on charge correlations between the electrons. Since correlation-induced insulating phases of most oxide compounds are usually very robust, new methods have to be developed to push such materials right to the boundary to the metallic phase in order to enable the metal-insulator transition to be switched by electric gating. Here we demonstrate that thin films of the prototypical Mott insulator LaTiO$_3$ grown by pulsed laser deposition under oxygen atmosphere are readily tuned by excess oxygen doping across the line of the band-filling controlled Mott transition in the electronic phase diagram. The detected insulator to metal transition is characterized by a strong change in resistivity of several orders of magnitude. The use of suitable substrates and capping layers to inhibit oxygen diffusion facilitates full control of the oxygen content and renders the films stable against exposure to ambient conditions, making LaTiO$_{3+x}$ a promising functional material for Mottronics devices.

Abstract

We have recently introduced a multistep extension of the greedy algorithm for modularity optimization. The extension is based on the idea that merging l pairs of communities (l>1) at each iteration prevents premature condensation into few large communities. Here, an empirical formula is presented for the choice of the step width l that generates partitions with (close to) optimal modularity for 17 real-world and 1100 computer-generated networks. Furthermore, an in-depth analysis of the communities of two real-world networks (the metabolic network of the bacterium E. coli and the graph of coappearing words in the titles of papers coauthored by Martin Karplus) provides evidence that the partition obtained by the multistep greedy algorithm is superior to the one generated by the original greedy algorithm not only with respect to modularity but also according to objective criteria. In other words, the multistep extension of the greedy algorithm reduces the danger of getting trapped in local optima of modularity and generates more reasonable partitions., Comment: 17 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

Identifying strongly connected substructures in large networks provides insight into their coarse-grained organization. Several approaches based on the optimization of a quality function, e.g., the modularity, have been proposed. We present here a multistep extension of the greedy algorithm (MSG) that allows the merging of more than one pair of communities at each iteration step. The essential idea is to prevent the premature condensation into few large communities. Upon convergence of the MSG a simple refinement procedure called "vertex mover" (VM) is used for reassigning vertices to neighboring communities to improve the final modularity value. With an appropriate choice of the step width, the combined MSG-VM algorithm is able to find solutions of higher modularity than those reported previously.
