This special issue is the result of our second call for the Internet Histories Early Career Researcher Award. For the second time, in 2021, the journal Internet Histories has invited any interested early career researchers (masters students, doctoral students, and post-doctoral researchers) whose research focuses on the history of the Internet and/or the Web, and histories of digital cultures — or any historical topic within the scope of the Internet Histories journal, to apply for the award and to submit an original article.

The book "Women, Gender and Computing (from the 1940s to today)" analyses how the role of women in computing has evolved in the US and Europe. It studies how this field became more and more a masculine domain. This anthology is structured in three parts. The first one focused on (In)Visibility through time, highlighting women's important role in the early years of computing. It enlightens the evolution of their role, first as human computers or punch cards operators, until the strong professionalization of the sector, and showcases their invisibility through time. The second part, on users and gendered representations, shows how the field of computing has been clearly centered around men, may it be through advertising or national policies. The third part is focused on empowerment, appropriation, and activism, starting with the first pioneering women in the software industry, such as Elsie Shutt in the 1950s and Stephanie "Steve" Shirley in the 1960s. On the most actual trends, this part includes different initiatives to encourage women into coding, gaming, and computing as a whole. This Living book mixes historical, sociological, and anthropological approaches, abandoning restrictive outlooks on computing science as a solely programming-centered field. The selected materials provide an overview of practices and representations of experts, computer workers, and users.

L’animal est au cœur d’interrogations politiques, sociales, écologiques et ontologiques qui éclairent le passé de manière profondément contemporaine. Si une « question animale » a bien émergé à l’âge classique et aux Lumières, inspirant de nombreux travaux, traités et autres publications, les recherches académiques des dernières décennies ont cependant connu une évolution fondamentale dans le champ historique. Qualifiées d’animal turn, elles sont caractérisées par le passage d’une vision de l’animal comme « objet » à celle d’un animal agissant, véritable acteur silencieux et souvent discret au cœur de multiples processus sociaux. Dans ce paysage prolifique qui cherche à produire une histoire des animaux, avec les animaux, ou par les animaux, la place et le rôle des médias sont quant à eux assez peu interrogés, du moins rarement spécifiquement. Les animaux occupent pourtant une place de choix sur la scène médiatique, des affiches illustrées et grands quotidiens du XIXe siècle à la circulation de mèmes et gifs sur les réseaux socio-numériques au XXIe siècle, en passant par les magazines TV animaliers ou les films et les albums jeunesse du XXe siècle. Ils apparaissent sous l’angle des représentations, des interactions avec les hommes, de leurs rôles et fonctions dans les sociétés, dans l’espace politique comme public. La question animale peut surgir dans les médias à l’occasion d’un détournement, d’une information, d’arguments commerciaux, d’enjeux de protection ou encore à travers ces animaux vedettes qui peuplent notre quotidien. Que nous apprend l’histoire de la diversité de ses fonctions, de ses usages et de ses imaginaires déployés dans les médias ? Ce dossier du Temps des médias invite à penser les animaux dans le temps long de l’histoire des médias.

La mémoire et l’archive ont fait l’objet d’un intérêt certain et transdisciplinaire depuis quelques décennies dans le domaine des études médiatiques et de communication. Des recherches, colloques et publications ont vu le jour, de The Audible Past : Cultural Origins of Sound Reproduction ou Technologies of memory : Practices of remembering in analogue and digital photography à L’invention de la mémoire : Écrire, enregistrer, numériser ou plus récemment l’ouvrage en ligne Le goût de l’archive à l’ère numérique, en passant par de nombreux autres travaux. Certes, le stockage – de contenus médiatiques, d’informations, de données, de documents et d’objets, mais aussi l’usage de ces stocks médiatiques, a bénéficié d’une attention en lien avec ces préoccupations relatives à la mémoire et l’archive. Cependant il est finalement assez peu abordé pour lui-même, comme y invite au contraire ce dossier.

It is the goal of this issue of Medien & Zeit to provide a glimpse on the long history of how media in their many different forms and variations, served as either and amplifier or even accomplice (for reasons of profit, influence, power or ideology), or in the contrary acted as an adversary to populist and radical politics. The goal of this issue hence is to contribute to an understanding of the role media played as potential accomplices or carriers of populist agitation (e.g. in autocratic regimes and in absence of free media or out of commercial crookedness) or as amplifiers of extreme political positions or groups and populist sentiment (e.g. sensationalist and simplistic reporting or excessive coverage for populist tropes). Media and mediated communication can however also act as countering forces and adversaries of radical politics and aim to tame blatant populism or maintain forums for civilized debate (i.e., governance or self-regulation measures that may evolve through time).

As media environments and communication practices evolve over time, so do theoretical concepts. This book analyzes some of the most well-known and fiercely discussed concepts of the digital age from a historical perspective, showing how many of them have pre-digital roots and how they have changed and still are constantly changing in the digital era. Written by leading authors in media and communication studies, the chapters historicize 16 concepts that have become central in the digital media literature, focusing on three main areas. The first part, Technologies and Connections, historicises concepts like network, media convergence, multimedia, interactivity and artificial intelligence. The second one is related to Agency and Politics and explores global governance, datafication, fake news, echo chambers, digital media activism. The last one, Users and Practices, is finally devoted to telepresence, digital loneliness, amateurism, user generated content, fandom and authenticity. The book aims to shed light on how concepts emerge and are co-shaped, circulated, used and reappropriated in different contexts. It argues for the need for a conceptual media and communication history that will reveal new developments without concealing continuities and it demonstrates how the analogue/digital dichotomy is often a misleading one.

This special issue is the result of an open call launched two years ago in connection with the activities of the Robert Schuman Initiative, led at the University of Luxembourg by Prof. David Howarth. Our call for papers invited scholars to historically analyse the relationship between the EU single market and the internet from a critical perspective. This interdisciplinary issue mainly analyses how the development of the Internet has created major regulatory challenges at the EU level. It looks at the various stakeholders and their changing roles, the regulatory framework and its turning points, underlining policy changes but also strong legacies and continuities within EU policies and debates.

The five papers of this special issue were candidates for the first Internet Histories Early Career Researcher Award. They represent the next generation of scholarship and show creative, original approaches to the study of internet history. These papers all help enrich our perspectives and broaden them in many ways, from Brazil to China, from Cyberactivitst to Civil Society at large, from Gender Studies to Platform Studies, from Emails to Interfaces, while demonstrating again that there is no unique path to write “Internet Histories.”

Penser l’histoire des médias … le chemin historiographique et académique qu’elle a parcouru, mais aussi son actualité et ses perspectives, telles sont les ambitions relevées par la cinquantaine de contributions de ce livre. Quatre dimensions ont été placées au cœur de cette réflexion collective : les enjeux d’ordre méthodologique et la diversité des démarches mobilisées par les chercheurs qui ont les médias pour objet d’étude ; les singularités des rapports entretenus par l’historien avec ses sources ; le spectre des objets d’étude ; enfin les finalités et l’utilité sociale du savoir produit par l’historien des médias. Ces dimensions se dévoilent au fil des chapitres de synthèse, des études de cas et de récits d’égo-histoire qui se répondent et prolongent le premier Congrès international de la Société pour l’histoire des médias (SPHM), tenu à l’Université de Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines en mai 2016. Au terme de cet ouvrage, le lecteur aura sans doute le sentiment que nous vivons un temps de redéfinition des frontières de l’histoire des médias, fécondée par d’autres approches et disciplines. Il en saisira d’autant mieux les défis en ayant son histoire à l’esprit, en un vaste panorama par médias, mais aussi par notion, thématiques et tendances de la recherche.

This special issue, which includes a translation of part of the conclusion of Serres’ thesis on the emergence of ARPANET (a work which is relatively unknown in the English-speaking community), two original articles and two interviews, is linked to the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the ARPANET and the desire to reconsider, 50 years on, the birth of this heterogeneous network that has left such a deep mark on the history of data networks. If we consider ARPANET as a first step towards the Internet, how did it determine – and how does it continue to determine – our current understanding of the Internet? What is left to explore and discover in ARPANET’s history? And if ARPANET is dead today, are its legacy and spirit still alive, and if so, in what way? While the few texts collected are of course not intended to provide all the answers, we hope that they will at least give food for thought.

This book comprises short thought-provoking pieces that invite to discussions, raise and suggest the issues, challenges, opportunities, tensions, conceptual and research terrain, cultural, political, social, economic and industrial dynamics, distinctive historiographic and theoretical underpinning that characterise the emergent field of Internet histories.

Accélération, errances ou efficacité accrue, le temps et les temporalités du Web offrent un panorama foisonnant de problématiques et d’objets que cet ouvrage aborde tout en nuances, grâce aux regards croisés de 19 contributions aux ancrages disciplinaires variés (histoire, sciences de l’information et de la communication, sociologie, sciences politiques, etc.). Frontières changeantes du professionnel et du privé, négociations et agencements socio-techniques, rapports à l’information et à la communication, oubli et mémoire, patrimonialisation et histoire du numérique… au travers de parties dédiées à l’histoire du Web et par le Web d’une part, aux temporalités humaines et techniques d’autre part, cette réflexion collective éclaire les enjeux actuels de la relation des sociétés et des individus aux temps du Web.

Au-delà de la diversité des thématiques, espaces et temporalités appréhendés et des méthodologies choisies, les auteurs de ces six Varia partagent, outre leur intérêt pour les territoires, les acteurs et le souhait d’analyser finement les outils, débats et enjeux à l’œuvre, un intérêt pour les trajectoires, qu’elles soient décisionnelles et s’appréhendent en termes de gouvernance, ou matérielles et se lisent en termes d’infrastructures.

This special issue dedicated to the 90s as a turning decade for Internet and the Web highlights the developments and choices – both technical and economic, but also cultural, societal and political – that contributed to the massification of the Internet and the discovery of the Web by the general public.

Who « invented » the Internet? Who holds the keys to the Internet? What sources, what actors should be given prominence in a history of the Internet and the Web able to fully take into account its origins, trajectories, turns, evolutions, continuities? The emergence of Arpanet in the 1960s, then, ten years later, of the Internet, is the product of a long-term innovation process that is yet to find its closure today, a process marked by the intertwining of socio-technical paths and heterogeneous networks of actors. Fifty years after the Arpanet project was launched, twenty-five years after the inception of the Web, twenty years since the beginning of the Internet Archive -- by means of a selection of sources and research essays -- this anthology seeks to provide an extended panorama of the variety of actors, trajectories, perspectives, methods and writings of Internet and Web history. The anthology is organized in three parts, according to a chronological progression: from Arpanet to the Internet, then the early-adopters Internet, its appropriation by political arenas and the first steps of an "at-large" governance, then the early-2000s democratisation of the Web vis-à-vis the general public. This work ties together the technical, economic, social, cultural, political and legal approaches to the Internet and offers a broader vision of a history that is not only written by and from the United States, but lives and thrives today at the international level.

Parmi les dix premiers sites visités au monde, Wikipédia est désormais d’un usage courant dans le milieu éducatif et scientifique. Mais quelles sont exactement les relations que les chercheurs ont nouées avec la plus célèbre encyclopédie participative et collaborative en ligne ? Tel est l’objet de ce livre collectif et interdisciplinaire, où alternent études de cas et réflexions transversales. En observant la participation des chercheurs et experts à Wikipédia, l’ouvrage cherche notamment à identifier des enjeux en termes d’intermédiation des savoirs, de structuration et de reconnaissance d’un champ ou de diffusion de la culture scientifique. Il a aussi pour ambition de présenter les problématiques soulevées par les chercheurs qui se sont saisis de Wikipédia en tant qu’objet de recherche, pour étudier la transformation des formes de savoir, les processus d’élaboration des articles et la gouvernance de l’encyclopédie. Ce tour d’horizon revient pour finir sur les modes d’utilisation de Wikipédia par les chercheurs et les enseignants dans le cadre de leur activité scientifique ou pédagogique, pour en saisir aussi bien les modalités effectives que les représentations relevant du discours ou de l’imaginaire. Les douze contributions qui composent cet ouvrage en attestent : Wikipédia est bien un objet scientifique émergent, et les auteurs ici réunis nous aident à mieux l’identifier.

This volume examines European perspectives on the historical relations that women have maintained with information and communication technologies (ICTs), since the telegraph. Features: describes how gendered networks have formed around ICT since the late 19th Century; reviews the gendered issues revealed by the conflict between the actress Ms Sylviac and the French telephone administration in 1904, or by ‘feminine’ blogs; examines how gender representations, age categories, and uses of ICT interact and are mutually formed in children’s magazines; illuminates the participation of women in the early days of computing, through a case study on the Rothamsted Statistics Department; presents a comparative study of women in computing in France, Finland and the UK, revealing similar gender divisions within the ICT professions of these countries; discusses diversity interventions and the part that history could (and should) play to ensure women do not take second place in specific occupational sectors.
