OBJECTIVE: To review new drugs and devices relevant to otolaryngology approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2022. DATA SOURCES: Publicly available FDA data on drugs and devices approved in 2022. REVIEW METHODS: A preliminary screen was conducted to identify drugs and devices relevant to otolaryngology. A secondary screen by members of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgerys (AAO-HNS) Medical Devices and Drugs Committee differentiated between minor updates and new approvals. The final list of drugs and devices was sent to members of each subspecialty for review and analysis. CONCLUSION: A total of 1251 devices and 37 drugs were identified on preliminary screening. Of these, 329 devices and 5 drugs were sent to subspecialists for further review, from which 37 devices and 2 novel drugs were selected for further analysis. The newly approved devices spanned all subspecialties within otolaryngology. Many of the newly approved devices aimed to enhance patient experience, including over-the-counter hearing aids, sleep monitoring devices, and refined CPAP devices. Other advances aimed to improve surgical access, convenience, or comfort in the operating room and clinic. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: Many new devices and drugs are approved each year to improve patient care and care delivery. By staying up to date with these advances, otolaryngologists can leverage new innovations to improve the safety and quality of care. Given the recent approval of these devices, further studies are needed to assess long-term impact within the field of otolaryngology.

This paper explores some of the implications that administrative data, defined as data initially collected for purposes other than research, will have for Sociology. Although administrative data are 'found' rather than 'made' and, in turn, pose several challenges, we argue that the potential of these data warrant the investment, and may lead to a new methodological imagination that can shed a light on time-tested concepts and advance our understanding of society. We show that it is already possible to advance several sociological debates through the use of administrative data and demonstrate the potential of these data through some examples drawn from classical sociological theory. We conclude by arguing that administrative data's potential will likely ensure that it becomes an important component of sociological research agendas in the coming years. Evaluation of the design and implementation of a web-based e-health application offers an opportunity to apply extensive research findings and evidence-based practices from the learning and performance literature. In this study, we examined how interactions between stakeholders influenced the design, implementation, and outcomes of an e-health education system. The online system was designed for adults with diabetes. A midsized suburban medical practice in the Midwest partnered with a private sector information technology provider and a university research team to develop the system for patients. Design of the support system was based on a model developed by Schaffer and colleagues, and the implementation strategy was informed by Ely's conditions-of-change model. Analyses of design and pilot study implementation processes were accomplished through the lens of responsive evaluation. Discussion of the successes, tensions, and challenges related to the design of learning and performance environments in the e-health context will guide future system design and evaluation efforts.

Learning designs aimed at supporting transformational change could significantly benefit from the adoption of socio-historical and socio-cultural analysis approaches. Such systemic perspectives are gaining more importance in education as they facilitate understanding of complex interactions between learning environments and human activity. The current study utilizes a framework based on activity theory to examine the system elements underlying patient self-management practices. Specifically, Jonassen and Rohrer-Murphy's task analysis methodology was adapted and literature reviews, expert interviews, and patient survey data were collected to ground the descriptions of system components. Results from this research will be discussed in terms of their contribution to the identification of design requirements for the creation of patient self-management and educational environments. The construct of teamwork has been of considerable interest to researchers and practitioners across domains. The literature on teams includes many studies related to team composition, processes, and roles, but it pays much less attention to how teams learn and innovate. Studies examining how cross-disciplinary teams interact during projects are even less common. The study examined here was conceived to fill the need for a theoretical framework to describe how individuals from different disciplines evolve into a team that creates new forms of knowledge and innovative solutions or products. The framework, which was validated in a university service-learning program with over 25 teams, is a comprehensive theory merging two existing team models within a sociocultural system framework emphasizing the mediating aspects of the collective team and context. The theoretical foundations, the definitions, and dimensions of the framework are presented in this article. (Contains 2 figures.)

A methodological framework for the delivery of knowledge, performance, and learning (KPL) systems is presented. The role of the KPL system is currently taken by learning management systems or learning and content management systems, and many of these systems facilitate the technical aspects of learning objects. However, they are still rooted in the thinking that formal courses are the only solution to learning and performance problems. A framework for delivery of a system supporting knowledge, performance and learning is described and illustrated, with a focus on problem solving, analysis, and supporting performance in all its forms. Over the past several years, there has been a shift in emphasis in many business, industry, government and military training organizations toward human performance technology or HPT (Rossett, 2002; Dean, 1995). This trend has required organizations to increase the human performance knowledge, skills, and abilities of the training workforce. Organizations that have been successful in making this transition have realized the benefits of blending instructional and non-instructional solutions to address performance problems (Schaffer & Keller, 2003; Huselid, 1995). What have been lacking are software tools to support the capacity-building efforts of human performance technologists. Such tools have the potential to support knowledge-building and development of a common shared knowledge base both within and across organizations. (Contains 4 figures.)

The purpose of this case study was to examine a teacher education system relative to the degree of performance support for the use of technology to support learning. Performance support was measured by the presence of factors such as clear expectations, feedback, tools, rewards, incentives, motivation, capacity, skills, and knowledge within the system. Major stakeholders within the teacher education system at the target institution included teacher education faculty, teacher education students, and cooperating teachers in local schools. While results were specifically interpreted relative to the requirements of teacher education students, several areas of performance support were found to be required within and across stakeholder groups. Results of the study are discussed with a particular focus on the degree of alignment of supports across the system. Recommendations for the allocation of system resources related to technology integration are also discussed.
