ABSTRACT The fruit-fly Anastrepha fraterculus uses the myrtacean fruits as its main primary hosts. The insect size might be an indicator of aptitude and fecundity, and morphometric studies are used to help in those identifications. This study aimed to verify the association among fruit weight, puparial weight and wing size of fruit-flies that developed in different myrtacean species. Yellow strawberry guava, cattle guava, guava and feijoa fruits were sampled from 5 trees of each species. The fruits were weighed, and the puparia originated from them were also weighed and individualized. The number, gender and total right-wing area of the flies were registered. Mean fruit and puparial weights and wing sizes were compared. Mean puparial weight was higher in guava and cattle guava. The largest mean wing area was recorded for individuals from guavas; the smallest, for those from yellow strawberry guava. The fruit and puparial weights did not present a significant association in yellow strawberry guava, cattle guava and feijoa. In guavas, the correlation between fruit and puparial weights was negative. The fruit weight and wing area in all myrtacean species did not show any correlation. These results indicate the fly is able to develop similarly in all sampled myrtacean species.

Source at https://doi.org/10.1186/s13054-018-2241-4. Licensed CC BY-NC-ND 4.0. Background: We aimed to investigate the extent of the agreement on practices around brain death and postmortem organ donation. Methods: Investigators from 67 Collaborative European NeuroTrauma Effectiveness Research in Traumatic Brain Injury (CENTER-TBI) study centers completed several questionnaires (response rate: 99%). Results: Regarding practices around brain death, we found agreement on the clinical evaluation (prerequisites and neurological assessment) for brain death determination (BDD) in 100% of the centers. However, ancillary tests were required for BDD in 64% of the centers. BDD for nondonor patients was deemed mandatory in 18% of the centers before withdrawing life-sustaining measures (LSM). Also, practices around postmortem organ donation varied. Organ donation after circulatory arrest was forbidden in 45% of the centers. When withdrawal of LSM was contemplated, in 67% of centers the patients with a ventricular drain in situ had this removed, either sometimes or all of the time. Conclusions: This study showed both agreement and some regional differences regarding practices around brain death and postmortem organ donation. We hope our results help quantify and understand potential differences, and provide impetus for current dialogs toward further harmonization of practices around brain death and postmortem organ donation.

The reasons for catastrophic declines of Sumatran rhinos are far from clear and data necessary to improve decisions for conservation management are often lacking. We reviewed literature and assembled a comprehensive data set on surveys of the Sumatran rhino subspecies (Dicerorhinus sumatrensis harrissoni) in the Malaysian state of Sabah on Borneo to chart the historical development of the population in Sabah and its exploitation until the present day. We fitted resource selection functions to identify habitat features preferred by a remnant population of rhinos living in the Tabin Wildlife Reserve in Sabah, and ran a series of population viability analyses (PVAs) to extract the key demographic parameters most likely to affect population dynamics. We show that as preferred habitat, the individuals in the reserve were most likely encountered in elevated areas away from roads, in close distance to mud-volcanoes, with a low presence of human trespassers and a wallow on site, and within a neighbourhood of dense forest and grassland patches preferably on Fluvisols and Acrisols. Our population viability analyses identified the percentage of breeding females and female lifetime reproductive period as the crucial parameters driving population dynamics, in combination with total protection even moderate improvements could elevate population viability substantially. The analysis also indicates that unrestrained hunting between 1930 and 1950 drastically reduced the historical rhino population in Sabah and that the remnant population could be rescued by combining the effort of total protection and stimulation of breeding activity. Based on our results, we recommend to translocate isolated reproductively healthy individuals to protected locations and to undertake measures to maximise conceptions, or running state-of-the-art reproductive management with assisted reproduction techniques. Our study demonstrates that a judicious combination of techniques can do much to illuminate causes of population declines, improve decision making for conservation management and possibly prevent similar developments in populations of other species of similar ecological standing.

International audience; The Aquatic Warbler Acrocephalus paludicola is one of the most threatened Western Palearctic passerine species, classified as globally Vulnerable. With its breeding grounds relatively secure, a clear need remains for the monitoring and protection of the migration and wintering grounds of this rare and endangered migrant. Recent research has shown that the Aquatic Warbler migrates through northwest Africa in autumn and spring. The wintering grounds are apparently limited to wetlands of sub-Saharan West Africa, with records from only about 20 localities in Mauritania, Mali, Senegal and Ghana. Given the lack of knowledge of its whereabouts, we decided to use the available data to predict the wintering distribution of the Aquatic Warbler with the help of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). We used a novel approach to model the distribution of rarely recorded species, which is based on a combination of presence-only and presence-absence modelling techniques. Using the program BIOMOD, we thus generated four progressively more conservative predictions of where the Aquatic Warbler overwinters in Africa. Whereas the most permissive model predicts the Aquatic Warbler to be found in a latitudinal band stretching from the Senegal river delta all the way to the Red Sea coast, the most restrictive model suggests a much smaller area concentrated within the regions around the Senegal river delta in northern Senegal and southern Mauritania and around the Niger inundation zone in southern Mali and eastern Burkina Faso. Such model predictions may be useful guidelines to focus further field research on the Aquatic Warbler. Given the excellent model predictions in this study, this novel technique may prove useful to model the distribution of other rare and endangered species, thus providing a means to guide future survey efforts.

- Abstract
The average blood lactic acid in 7 cases of preeclampsia was 12.9 mg % (8.0-18.6) as compared with 11.0 mg % (9.1-12.3) in 8 cases of normal pregnancy. The average blood acetone bodies in the pre-eclamptic cases was 0.8 mg % (<0.1-2.6) as compared with 1.3 mg % (<0.1-2.7) for normal pregnancy. The average blood uric acid for the pre-eclamptic group was 4.5 mg % and for normal pregnancy was 3.0 mg %. The rise in blood lactic acid in eclampsia occurs mainly after convulsions. The hyperuricemia of pre-eclampsia and eclampsia can not be primarily attributed to an elevation of blood lactic acid or acetone bodies.

- Abstract
Serine and theonine were hydrolyzed in newly designed tubes featuring O-ring joints. Design features of the apparatus include (1) a Teflon stopcock sealed to an O-ring connector tube, (2) a Teflon plug secured by a new sealing clamp, and (3) a Teflon O-ring used in the O-ring joint. This technique was compared with the sealed-tube procedure; the above amino acids were equally decomposed in both types of apparatus. The O-ring joint tube can be reused, thereby eliminating sealing and opening of evacuated hydrolysis tubes. (Author)

SCHOOL superintendents ,EDUCATION conferences - Abstract
The article presents a speech by N. C. Schaeffer, state superintendent of Pennsylvania before the National Education Association convention in the U.S. He discusses the role of school in preparing students to attain higher quality of life. Education should aspire at something higher than utility. He stresses that knowledge becomes useless when its usefulness tend to decrease. Schaefer advocates that pupils must learn to develop his earning power, to appreciate the truth and live in harmony.

- Abstract
The accumulation of β-amyloid in Alzheimer's disease greatly impacts neuronal health and synaptic function. To maintain network stability in the face of altered synaptic activity, neurons engage a feedback mechanism termed homeostatic scaling; however, this process is thought to be disrupted during disease progression. Previous proteomics studies have shown that one of the most highly regulated proteins in cell culture models of homeostatic scaling is the small secretory chaperone proSAAS. Our prior work has shown that proSAAS exhibits anti-aggregant behavior against alpha-synuclein and β-amyloid fibrillation in vitro and is up-regulated in cell models of proteostatic stress. However, the specific role that this protein might play in homeostatic scaling, and its anti-aggregant role in Alzheimer's progression, is not clear. To learn more about the role of proSAAS in maintaining hippocampal proteostasis, we compared its expression in a primary neuron model of homeostatic scaling to other synaptic components using western blotting and qPCR, revealing that proSAAS protein responses to homeostatic up- and down-regulation were significantly higher than those of two other synaptic vesicle components, 7B2 and carboxypeptidase E. However, proSAAS mRNA expression was static, suggesting translational control and/or altered protein degradation. ProSAAS was readily released upon depolarization of differentiated hippocampal cultures, supporting its synaptic localization. Immunohistochemical analysis demonstrated abundant proSAAS within the mossy fiber layer of the hippocampus in both wild-type and 5xFAD mice; in the latter, proSAAS was also concentrated around amyloid plaques. Importantly, overexpression of proSAAS in the CA1 region via stereotaxic injection of proSAAS-encoding AAV2/1 significantly decreased amyloid plaque burden in 5xFAD mice. We hypothesize that dynamic changes in proSAAS expression play a critical role in hippocampal proteostatic processes, both in the context of normal homeostatic plasticity and in the control of protein aggregation during Alzheimer's disease progression., (© 2024 International Society for Neurochemistry.)

- Abstract
The need for sustainable agriculture amid a growing population and challenging climatic conditions is hindered by the environmental repercussions of widespread fertilizer use, resulting in the accumulation of metal ions and the loss of micronutrients. The present study provides an approach to improve the efficiency of nanofertilizers by controlling the release of copper (Cu) ions from copper oxide (CuO) nanofertilizers through bioionic liquids based on plant growth regulators (PGR-ILs). A 7-day study was conducted to understand the kinetics of Cu ion release in aqueous solution of five different PGR-ILs, with choline ascorbate ([Cho][Asc]) or choline salicylate ([Cho][Sal]) leading to 200- to 700-fold higher dissolution of Cu ions in comparison to choline indole-3-acetate ([Cho][IAA]), choline indole-3-butyrate ([Cho][IBA]), and choline gibberellate ([Cho][GA
3 ]). The tunable diffusion of Cu ions from CuO nanofertilizers using PGR-ILs is then applied in a foliar spray study, evaluating its impact on the growth phenotype, photosynthetic parameters, and carbon dioxide (CO2 ) sequestration in Nicotiana tabacum in a greenhouse. The results indicate that nanoformulations with lower concentrations of Cu ions in PGR-IL solutions exhibit superior outcomes in terms of plant length, net photosynthetic rate, dry biomass yield, and CO2 sequestration, emphasizing the critical role of dissolution kinetics in determining the effectiveness of PGR-IL-based nanoformulations for sustainable agriculture., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing financial interest., (© 2024 The Authors.
