This report details the activity and outcomes of a series of design led workshops involving stakeholders of Respiratory services in the NHS Scotland. Participants came from 16 specialists’ areas and 6 different NHS Board areas, giving both a broad geographic and functional reach. The first step for the workshops was to identify common Respiratory patient symptoms, noting their importance. Issues were mapped for each symptom and areas to focus on agreed. Further discussion around these focus areas led to suggestions for sustainable improvement to Respiratory services. These ranged from reducing unnecessary initial, return and follow-up appointments and improving chronic infection and sleep apnoea pathways. Work to further scope these improvements will be under taken in the coming months allowing a prioritization process to take place through the Scottish Access Collaborative (SAC). Future work will involve national support to ensure the Respiratory community, along with primary care partners are supported to make the necessary changes to ensure efficient and effective patient pathways are achieved. It is envisaged that the work areas will be taken forward either through the Respiratory community itself or for broader issues which are not specialty specific, be achieved through the SAC Combined Action Group (CAG).

The first step for the workshops was to identify common Gastroenterology patient symptoms, noting their importance. Issues were mapped for each symptom and areas to focus on agreed. Further discussion around these focus areas led to suggestions for sustainable improvement to Gastroenterology services. These ranged from better support for patient self-management, the suggestion of a more dynamic relationship between primary and secondary care to better use of community dietetics. Work to further scope these improvements will be under taken in the coming months allowing a prioritization process to take place through the Scottish Access Collaborative (SAC). Future work will involve national support to ensure the Gastroenterology community, along with primary care partners are supported to make the necessary changes to ensure efficient and effective patient pathways are achieved. It is envisaged that the work areas will be taken forward either through the Gastroenterology community itself or for broader issues which are not specialty specific, be achieved through the SAC Combined Action Group (CAG).

These ranged from additional targeted patient information, virtual consultations for follow-up and dedicated vetting in secondary care to clinical cluster groups, and nationally accepted referral guidelines which are easy to access and follow. Future work will involve national support to ensure the Gynaecology community, along with primary care partners are supported to make the necessary changes to ensure efficient and effective patient pathways are achieved. The first step for the workshops was to identify common Urology patient symptoms, noting their importance. Issues were mapped for each symptom and areas to focus on agreed. Further discussion around these focus areas led to suggestions for sustainable improvement to Urology services. These ranged from additional targeted patient information to support self-management and opt in for treatment, virtual consultations and dedicated vetting in secondary care, to direct referral for diagnostic tests from primary care and nationally accepted referral guidelines which are easy to access and follow and can be adapted taking into account local variation. Work to further scope these improvements will be under taken in the coming months allowing a prioritization process to take place through the Scottish Access Collaborative (SAC). Future work will involve national support to ensure the Urology community, along with primary care partners are supported to make the necessary changes to ensure efficient and effective patient pathways are achieved. Further discussion around these focus areas led to suggestions for sustainable improvement to Cardiology services. These ranged from supported\ud patient led follow-up to enhanced clinical triage. Work to further scope these improvements will be under taken in the coming months allowing a prioritization process to take place through the Scottish Access Collaborative (SAC). Salty Lives uses a design anthropology approach to critically examine emerging trends in health and data, and to articulate alternative trajectories. It explores how design might be applied to reimagine the cultures, institutions and systems that shape our world. Salty Lives is thus an inquiry into both how we might live, and how we might design. \ud \ud As a result, I proposed Compass - a concept for a mobile app. Compass would allow people with cystic fibrosis to get in touch with others who live with similar health challenges using medical data. A phone call provides a direct, personal, but non-committal way of contact. Compass aims to bridge the gap between medical and measurable data, patient activism, and research - and the more human layer of well-being, sensemaking and wayfinding through storytelling and personal contact. It does not intend to provide answers, but shows possible trajectories, challenges what might be seen as inevitable or impossible, and opens up discussions. This applies to living with CF, as well as to broader issues of sharing medical data, of how health knowledge is defined and controlled, and what it means for quality of life.
