Abstract

Biomechanical functionality of artificial hips strongly correlates with quality of life of patients after total hip arthroplasty. As the numbers of total hip arthroplasty are growing due to increasing life expectancy, biomechanical research is of utmost importance to improve the implants used and the operative procedures applied. Multibody simulation is used to predict forces and moments inside the human body. Generic scaling is usually performed to adapt the human models used in multibody simulation to individual patients. However, since the shape and size of the bones can vary considerably, this type of scaling often is not sufficient. In this work various CT datasets were used to quantify differences of individual femoral shapes, especially with regard to important biomechanical hip parameters, such as the CCD angle or the femoral offset. Our results prove that multibody simulations should be modeled more patientspecific to be able to calculate articular forces and moments more precisely, and thus, to improve surgical planning.

Abstract

Featured Application: This research aims to provide a co-simulation model to derive design optimizations for technical support systems regarding the user needs. Working at and above head height with a power tool represents a common activity in craft and assembly applications. To assist and protect the user from overload and injuries in these situations, the development and use of application-specific support systems, such as exoskeletons and power tools, have greatly increased in recent years. Thus, the integration of aspects of the user-centered product development of support systems in the early phases of product development process has high potentials. A common approach to integrate the user early in the product development process is the use of musculoskeletal human models, which allow the evaluation of effects on the human body. This could also be applicable in the mentioned use case to enable the evaluation of the interactions for the user. Therefore, a co-simulation model for virtual modelling and simulating human–machine interactions is presented. The co-simulation model is made up of a musculoskeletal human model and the models of the technical systems (exoskeleton and power tool). By applying the co-simulation model, the impact of technical systems on the human body can be taken into account to derive design alternatives for the technical system due to the requirements of the user. The paper describes the design of the co-simulation model and particularly, the interaction of the submodels. The evaluation of the co-simulation model is carried out with the help of a subject study for the selected use case working at and above head height. The results show plausible results for the muscle loads considering the support by an exoskeleton. Furthermore, the comparison of simulated results to measured muscle activations via surface electromyography shows a good agreement. Thus, the co-simulation model passes the test for functionality and seems to be applicable for the derivation of design alternatives of technical systems regarding the user needs. Abstract

Motor disorders are diseases affecting the muscle function of the human body. A frequently occurring motor disorder affects the lower leg muscles resulting in a pathological gait called foot drop. Patients have a higher risk of stumbling and falling. The most common treatment is the use of a passive ankle-foot-orthosis (AFO). However, the compensation of foot drop is only limited due to the non possible support of all rotational directions of the ankle joint. Therefore, a newly developed concept for a passive AFO is currently in work. To ensure a best possible treatment of the patient, the provided support by the AFO and required support by the patient have to be in accordance. Thus, in this contribution a method is presented that integrates model order reduced finite element analysis for computing the provided support of the AFO and musculoskeletal human models for representing the patients' gait behaviour. With the method, the design of the force generating structures of the AFO can be realized regarding the patients' requirements. The presented method is further evaluated with a specific use case. Abstract

With increasing life expectancy, the risk of diseases of the central nervous system, such as cancer, strokes, etc., also increases. Strokes often result in injury to the sciatic nerve, which is responsible for controlling the calf muscles (plantar and dorsal flexors). A so-called ankle joint orthosis (AFO) helps to support the pathological gait and to avoid foot drop during gait. Passive orthoses are of particular importance for research, as they do not require additional incoming energy from outside to the orthotic system. However, current passive orthoses are often not personalized. On the one hand, because they usually have only a temporary muscle-building function and, on the other hand, because the individual design process is computationally time consuming and thus expensive. This paper presents a possibility to pre-dimension and pre-design passive orthoses fast and cost-efficiently by reducing the complexity of the model based on volume-optimized truss elements. Therefor a traditional high calculation intensive design procedure is compared with the complexity reduced model to show its effectiviness and the similarity of the results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
