Abstract

A realisation of a periodically driven microwave system is presented. The principal element of the scheme is a variable capacity, i.e. a varicap, introduced as an element of the resonant circuit. Sideband structures corresponding to different driving signals, have been measured experimentally. In the linear regime we observed sideband structures with specific shapes. The main peculiarities of these shapes can be explained within a semiclassical approximation. Abstract

Nb/Al_2O_3/Ni_{0.6}Cu_{0.4}/Nb based superconductor-insulator-ferromagnet-superconductor (SIFS) Josephson tunnel junctions with a thickness step in the metallic ferromagnetic \Ni_{0.6}\Cu_{0.4} interlayer were fabricated. The step was defined by optical lithography and controlled etching. The step height is on the scale of a few angstroms. Experimentally determined junction parameters by current-voltage characteristics and Fraunhofer pattern indicate an uniform F-layer thickness and the same interface transparencies for etched and non-etched F-layers. This technique could be used to tailor low-T_c Josephson junctions having controlled critical current densities at defined parts of the junction area, as needed for tunable resonators, magnetic-field driven electronics or phase modulated devices., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures, small changes, to be published by JAP

Abstract

An axion insulator is a correlated topological phase, which is predicted to arise from the formation of a charge-density wave in a Weyl semimetal.sup.1,2--that is, a material in which electrons behave as massless chiral fermions. The accompanying sliding mode in the charge-density-wave phase--the phason--is an axion.sup.3,4 and is expected to cause anomalous magnetoelectric transport effects. However, this axionic charge-density wave has not yet been experimentally detected. Here we report the observation of a large positive contribution to the magnetoconductance in the sliding mode of the charge-density-wave Weyl semimetal (TaSe.sub.4).sub.2I for collinear electric and magnetic fields. The positive contribution to the magnetoconductance originates from the anomalous axionic contribution of the chiral anomaly to the phason current, and is locked to the parallel alignment of the electric and magnetic fields. By rotating the magnetic field, we show that the angular dependence of the magnetoconductance is consistent with the anomalous transport of an axionic charge-density wave. Our results show that it is possible to find experimental evidence for axions in strongly correlated topological condensed matter systems, which have so far been elusive in any other context. 12. VPM1002 as Prophylaxis Against Severe Respiratory Tract Infections Including Coronavirus Disease 2019 in the Elderly: A Phase 3 Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled, Multicenter Clinical Study.

Item does not contain fulltext, BACKGROUND: Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccination can potentially reduce the rate of respiratory infections in vulnerable populations. This study evaluates the safety and efficacy of VPM1002 (a genetically modified BCG) as prophylaxis against severe respiratory tract infections including coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in an elderly population. METHODS: In this phase 3, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multicenter clinical trial, healthy elderly volunteers (N = 2064) were enrolled, randomized (1:1) to receive either VPM1002 or placebo, and followed up remotely for 240 days. The primary outcome was the mean number of days with severe respiratory infections at hospital and/or at home. Secondary endpoints included the incidence of self-reported fever, number of hospital and intensive care unit (ICU) admissions, and number of adverse events. RESULTS: A total of 31 participants in the VPM1002 group reported at least 1 day with severe respiratory disease and a mean number of days with severe respiratory disease of 9.39 ± 9.28 while in the placebo group; 38 participants reported a mean of 14.29 ± 16.25 days with severe respiratory disease. The incidence of self-reported fever was lower in the VPM1002 group (odds ratio, 0.46 [95% confidence interval, .28-.74]; P = .001), and consistent trends to fewer hospitalization and ICU admissions due to COVID-19 were observed after VPM1002 vaccination. Local reactions typical for BCG were observed in the VPM1002-vaccinated group, which were mostly of mild intensity. CONCLUSIONS: Vaccination with VPM1002 is well tolerated and seems to have a prophylactic effect against severe respiratory disease in the elderly. CLINICAL TRIALS REGISTRATION: NCT04435379.

13. Developing elastic–plastic material models for pressure measurement films in a steel–steel contact for smooth and rough surfaces

Abstract

The contact zone between two steel components can be identified by utilizing a pressure measurement film in the contact between them. To reduce the number of necessary experiments, it is possible to simulate the contact situation using “finite element analysis.” This analysis requires material models for the contact partners and for the pressure measurement films. It is known that the pressure measurement film deforms not only elastically but also plastically. Taking this plastic deformation into account requires an appropriate material model such as the Drucker–Prager model. Based on published data of experiments with pressure measurement films that had been inserted between smooth and rough Hertzian bodies, we developed material models for three pressure measurement films. The roughness of a Hertzian body was studied by determining multiple pressure–clearance curves for three different surface roughnesses and for three different pressure measurement films. These curves were developed with micromodels, which represented a small section of the rough contact surface. An average curve for each material was then implemented in the macromodel for each roughness representing the contact situation. Subsequently, the resulting contact areas were compared with the published experimental data. This comparison showed that the material model for the smooth contact was able to emulate the experimentally determined contact areas. Including the pressure–clearance curves in the material model allowed the simulation of the rough contact situation. However, the deviation between the simulated and the experimental data was slightly larger for the rough surface than for the smooth surface.

Abstract

Digital learning and teaching have become significantly more relevant for training, specialist training and advanced training because of the requirements during the Corona pandemic. This also applies to higher education. As a digital healthcare service provider, Thieme supports information and communication processes in medicine and related health and natural sciences for the benefit of young medical professionals, among others. In this article, we introduce via medici. Thiemes digital learning and teaching portal offers students and lecturers professionally tailored and practical content for all phases within medical studies: starting with the introduction to medical content in the pre-clinical and clinical phase, followed by practice-oriented knowledge and completed with hands-on preparation for the major state examinations using the original IMPP questions. Students can display the content in via medici in accordance with their university’s curriculum, among other things, and thus study in a focused manner throughout the term. Lecturers have the possibility to compile medical content from via medici for their students to prepare for or to follow up on courses and to combine it with their own teaching materials and other external content. via medici is thus more and more becoming an individual learning and teaching environment for universities. Thieme is increasingly focusing on the (further) development of digital products, offerings and solutions. In addition, traditional teaching media will continue to play an important role in the Thieme Group’s portfolio., Digitales Lernen und Lehren hat mit den Anforderungen während der Corona-Pandemie noch einmal deutlich an Relevanz für die Aus-, Fort- und Weiterbildung gewonnen – auch im Hochschulbereich. 34. Prognostic biomarkers in primary progressive multiple sclerosis: Validating and scrutinizing multimodal evoked potentials

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To validate the prognostic value of multimodal evoked potentials (mmEP) in primary progressive multiple sclerosis (PPMS) and to determine the most predictive EP-modalities. METHODS: Thirty-nine patients with PPMS (expanded disability status scale (EDSS): 2.0-6.5; mean clinical follow-up: 2.8 years) had visual (VEP), upper and lower limb somatosensory (SEP) and motor EP (MEP) at baseline. Quantitative EP-scores for single (qVEP, qSEP, qMEP) and combined modalities were correlated to EDSS and compared to previously published data of 21 PPMS patients. Predictors of EDSS-change were analyzed in pooled data by linear regression. RESULTS: Samples were comparable. Except qVEP, all EP-scores were correlated to EDSS at baseline (Rho: 0.45-0.69; p < 0.01) and follow-up (Rho: 0.59-0.80; p < 0.001). Combined EP-modalities significantly predicted EDSS-change (R(2)adj: 0.24), while EDSS and age did not. Tibial qSEP (R(2)adj: 0.22) and qMEP (R(2)adj: 0.26) were the best single modality predictors, outperformed by their combination (R(2)adj: 0.32). CONCLUSIONS: Quantitative EP-scores predict up to 32% of EDSS-change over three years. Modalities representing motor and long tract function carry the main prognostic information. SIGNIFICANCE: Replication of previous results corroborates the use of mmEP as a prognostic biomarker candidate in PPMS.
