Covalent long-range ordered (crystalline) sheets called 2D polymers have recently been synthesized by irradiating single crystals of suitably packed monomers. To have such an action proceed successfully, billions of bond formation processes have to be mastered exclusively in two dimensions within 3D crystals. This raises questions as to how to elucidate the mechanism of these unusual polymerizations as well as their entire strain management. The article will show that single crystal X-ray diffraction based on both Bragg and diffuse scattering are powerful techniques to achieve such goal. The very heart of both techniques will be explained and it will be shown what can be safely concluded with their help and what not. Consequently, the reader will understand why some crystals break during polymerization, while others stay intact. This understanding will then be molded into a few guidelines that should help pave the way for future developments of 2D polymers by those interested in joining the effort with this fascinating and emerging class of 2D materials.

2D polymer sheets with six positively charged pyrylium groups at each pore edge in a stacked single crystal can be transformed into a 2D polymer with six pyridines per pore by exposure to gaseous ammonia. This reaction furnishes still a crystalline material with tunable protonation degree at regular nano-sized pores promising as separation membrane. The exfoliation is compared for both 2D polymers with the latter being superior. Its liquid phase exfoliation yields nanosheet dispersions, which can be size-selected using centrifugation cascades. Monolayer contents of ≈30 % are achieved with ≈130 nm sized sheets in mg quantities, corresponding to tens of trillions of monolayers. Quantification of nanosheet sizes, layer number and mass shows that this exfoliation is comparable to graphite. Thus, we expect that recent advances in exfoliation of graphite or inorganic crystals (e.g. scale-up, printing etc.) can be directly applied to this 2D polymer as well as to covalent organic frameworks., (© 2019 The Authors. A two-dimensional (2D) covalent monolayer based on [4 + 4] cycloaddition reactions between adjacent anthracene units was synthesized at an air/water interface. For structural analysis, tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) provides direct evidence for the covalent bonds formed between monomer molecules. For the first time, progress of the photopolymerization reaction was monitored by irradiation ( λ = 385 nm) of the monomer monolayer for different times, based on averaged TER spectra extracted from maps. In addition, a 2D polymerization on a Au (111) substrate was realized, which opens up new possibilities for such chemical transformations. This work uses TERS as a minimally invasive tool to investigate how the reaction conditions affect polymerization conversion. We show that the high sensitivity and the high spatial resolution of TERS can be used to estimate the crystallinity of 2D covalent monolayers, which is a key question in polymer synthesis., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry 2019.)

Dendronized polymers (DPs) are large and compact main-chain linear polymers with a cylindrical shape and cross-sectional diameters of up to ∼15 nm. They are therefore considered molecular objects, and it was of interest whether given their experimentally accessible, well-defined dimensions, the density of individual DPs could be determined. We present measurements on individual, deposited DP chains, providing molecular dimensions from scanning and transmission electron microscopy and mass-per-length values from quantitative scanning transmission electron microscopy. These results are compared with density values obtained from small-angle X-ray scattering on annealed bulk specimen and with classical envelope density measurements, obtained using hydrostatic weighing or a density gradient column. The samples investigated comprise a series of DPs with side groups of dendritic generations g = 1-8. The key findings are a very large spread of the density values over all samples and methods, and a consistent increase of densities with g over all methods. While this work highlights the advantages and limitations of the applied methods, it does not provide a conclusive answer to the question of which method(s) to use for the determination of densities of individual molecular objects. We are nevertheless confident that these first attempts to answer this challenging question will stimulate more research into this important aspect of polymer and soft matter science.

Recent breakthroughs in the single crystal approach to synthetic 2D polymers have shifted the limelight onto these long-range ordered sheet-like polymers synthesized at the air/water interface, where one obtains them as laterally macroscopic monolayers without the need for exfoliation. The article presents the most recent monomers for this approach and shows an important analytical development in the field of structure elucidation as well as findings relevant to potential applications. The analytical development concerns an indirect method to establish crystallinity of 2D polymer monolayers based on a combination of tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy and a crystallization model. Structural elucidation of 2D polymer monolayers proving long-range order is a challenge that limits the pace in which this recent field of polymer chemistry and of synthetic 2D materials develops. To overcome this bottleneck, we here present a method in which tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy is combined with a random growth crystallization model to obtain global features from local spectroscopic information. Concretely, we prove the nature and determine the conversion number X of the cross-links for two new 2D homopolymers and one (of three) new 2D copolymers. Assuming random and in-plane growth, our model results in crystallinity degrees of 93.1% to 99.7% and mean radii of defect-free crystalline areas of 3-15 nm for conversion numbers of 84% < X < 98%. Thus, we provide strong evidence for the synthetic monolayer 2D materials presented that they qualify as 2D polymers and are therefore perfectly suited for in-depth studies both in a more fundamental direction as well as toward application. This example shows how our method can affect current research on covalent sheets.

We present a comprehensive investigation of main-chain scission processes affecting peripherally charged and neutral members of a class of dendronized polymers (DPs) studied in our laboratory. In these thick, sterically highly congested macromolecules, scission occurs by exposure to solvents, in some cases at room temperature, in others requiring modest heating. Our investigations rely on gel permeation chromatography and atomic force microscopy and are supported by molecular dynamics simulations as well as by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. Strikingly, DP main-chain scission depends strongly on two factors: first the solvent, which must be highly polar to induce scission of the DPs, and second the dendritic generation g . In DPs of generations 1 ≤ g ≤ 8, scission occurs readily only for g = 5, no matter whether the polymer is charged or neutral. Much more forcing conditions are required to induce degradation in DPs of g ≠ 5. We propose solvent swelling as the cause for the main-chain scission in these individual polymer molecules, explaining in particular the strong dependence on g : g < 5 DPs resemble classical polymers and are accessible to the strongly interacting, polar solvents, whereas g > 5 DPs are essentially closed off to solvent due to their more closely colloidal character. g = 5 DPs mark the transition between these two regimes, bearing strongly sterically congested side chains which are still solvent accessible to some degree. Our results suggest that, even in the absence of structural elements which favour scission such as cross-links, solvent swelling may be a generally applicable mechanochemical trigger. This may be relevant not only for DPs, but also for other types of sterically strongly congested macromolecules.

The backbone conformations of individual, unperturbed synthetic macromolecules have so far not been observed directly in spite of their fundamental importance to polymer physics. Here we report the dilute solution conformations of two types of linear dendronized polymers, obtained by cryogenic transmission electron stereography and tomography. The three-dimensional trajectories show that the wormlike chain model fails to adequately describe the scaling of these thick macromolecules already beyond a few nanometers in chain length, in spite of large apparent persistence lengths and long before a signature of self-avoidance appears. This insight is essential for understanding the limitations of polymer physical models, and it motivated us to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this approach in comparison to the commonly applied scattering techniques.

This feature article provides both a critical perspective as to where synthetic 2D polymers currently stand and a rather substantial view into how the future of this exciting field of polymer chemistry might look. It starts out by addressing strategic considerations meant to familiarize the reader with what to expect when entering the field. To better understand these considerations, the very nature of a 2D polymer is addressed in comparison to other organic 2D materials. Thereafter, the article moves quite intensely and critically into synthetic and mechanistic issues of 2D polymers before concentrating on the important structural analytics that one has to go through when unequivocally establishing these novel sheet-like polymeric objects. After a short excursion into the matter of exfoliation, the feature article then culminates in a section attempting to forecast the future. Key differences between 1D and 2D polymers are highlighted, and those considered by the authors to be the most attractive and burning research goals are further discussed. In this work we prepare Langmuir-Blodgett monolayers with a trifunctional amphiphilic anthraphane monomer. Upon spreading at the air/water interface, the monomers self-assemble into 1 nm-thin monolayer islands, which are highly fluorescent and can be visualized by the naked eye upon excitation. In situ fluorescence spectroscopy indicates that in the monolayers, all the anthracene units of the monomers are stacked face-to-face forming excimer pairs, whereas at the edges of the monolayers, free anthracenes are present acting as edge groups. Irradiation of the monolayer triggers [4 + 4]-cycloadditions among the excimer pairs, effectively resulting in a two-dimensional (2D) polymerization. The polymerization reaction also completely quenches the fluorescence, allowing to draw patterns on the monomer monolayers. More interestingly, after transferring the monomer monolayer on a solid substrate, by employing masks or the laser of a confocal scanning microscope, it is possible to arbitrarily select the parts of the monolayer that one wants to polymerize. The unpolymerized regions can then be washed away from the substrate, leaving 2D macromolecular monolayer objects of the desired shape. This photolithographic process employs 2D polymerizations and affords 1 nm-thin coatings.

Periodic and nanoporous monolayer polymers, the structures of which can be viewed as molecular fishing nets, have been classified as 2D polymers. They have been previously synthesized under mild photoirradiation conditions in the interior of layered single crystals of well-designed monomers, followed by a liquid-phase exfoliation. While these mild conditions allow for full structure control, the size of 2D polymers obtained cannot exceed that of the crystals from which they are prepared. In this Review, we discuss different concepts currently pursued to prepare macroscopically sized 2D polymers, focusing on syntheses at the air-water and liquid-liquid interfaces. While these interfaces are larger reaction loci than single crystals, sheet-like polymers obtained at them pose complex and time-consuming analytical challenges. Some of these challenges are concretely discussed and indicators are provided for identifying the promising cases, enabling to concentrate on them in the future research. Additionally, this Review discusses three representative examples of 2D polymers to provide a state-of-the-art picture of this emerging field of polymer and materials science. Finally, we sketch the range of applications, such as nanomembranes, electronics, optoelectronics, and electrocatalysts for water splitting, that are relevant for these novel organic 2D materials., (© 2018 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. In this work we present one of the rare cases of single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SCSC) linear polymerizations, resulting in a novel ladder-type polymer. The polymerization is based on the photoinduced [4+4]-cycloaddition reactions between trifunctional anthracene-based monomers. The careful design of the monomer anthraphane-tri(OMe), results in perfectly stacked anthracene pairs in the crystal structure, with Schmidt's distances d=3.505-3.666 Å and shift s=1.109 Å, allowing a selective linear polymerization in quantitative yields and in a matter of minutes, without compromising the integrity of the single crystals. A trifunctional, partially fluorinated anthracene-substituted triptycene monomer was spread at an air/water interface into a monolayer, which was transformed into a long-range-ordered 2D polymer by irradiation with a standard UV lamp. The polymer was analyzed by Brewster angle microscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy measurements, and non-contact atomic force microscopy, which confirmed the generation of a network structure with lattice parameters that are virtually identical to a structural model network based on X-ray diffractometry of a closely related 2D polymer. The nc-AFM images highlight the long-range order over areas of at least 300×300 nm 2 . As required for a 2D polymer, the pore sizes are monodisperse, except for the regions where the network is somewhat stretched because it spans over protrusions. Nanoscale defects in monolayers (MLs) of two-dimensional (2D) materials, such as graphene, transition-metal dichalcogenides, and 2D polymers, can alter their physical, mechanical, optoelectronic, and chemical properties. However, detailed information about nanodefects within 2D covalent monolayers is difficult to obtain because it requires highly selective and sensitive techniques that can provide chemical information at the nanoscale. Here, we report a 2D imine-linked ML prepared from two custom-designed building blocks by dynamic imine chemistry at the air/water interface, in which an acetylenic moiety in one of the blocks was used as a spectroscopic reporter for nanodefects. Combined with density functional theory calculations that take into account surface selection rules, tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) imaging provides information on the chemical bonds, molecular orientation, as well as nanodefects in the resulting ML. Additionally, TERS imaging visualizes the topography and integrity of the ML at Au(111) terrace edges, suggesting possible ductility of the ML. Furthermore, edge-induced molecular tilting and a stronger signal enhancement were observed at the terrace edges, from which a spatial resolution around 8 nm could be deduced. The present work can be used to study covalent 2D materials at the nanoscale, which are expected to be of use when engineering their properties for specific device applications.

This work describes a two-dimensional polymerization at an air/water interface and provides, for the first time, direct spectroscopic evidence for the kind of crosslinks formed and for the conversion reached in a covalently bonded monolayer sheet. This evidence was obtained through a combination of a variety of monolayer characterization techniques before and after transfer onto solid substrates, in particular by tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) and TERS mapping after transfer of both the monomer and polymer monolayer onto Au(111). We report an investigation of interfacial fluorinated hydrocarbon (carboxylic-fantrip) monolayers by nanoscale imaging using tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. By comparing TERS images of a sub-monolayer prepared by spin-coating and a π-π-stacked monolayer on Au(111) in which the molecular orientation is confined, specific Raman peaks shift and line widths narrow in the transferred LB monolayer. Based on DFT calculations that take into account dispersion corrections and surface selection rules, these specific effects are proposed to originate from π-π stacking and molecular orientation restriction. TERS shows the possibility to distinguish between a random and locked orientation with a spatial resolution of less than 10 nm. The acid-assisted wet-chemical and the adhesive-tape induced micromechanical exfoliation of differently sized single crystals of a 2D polymer (approx. 20 μm and 100 μm) is shown to result in thin sheet stacks. Tuning of the thickness is achieved via duration and frequency of the exfoliation, respectively. A color code is established that correlates interference colors of sheet stacks on SiO 2 (300 nm)/Si as observed under an optical microscope with their thicknesses measured by atomic force microscopy. This facilitates reliable monitoring of the exfoliation and quick identification of sheet stacks of a desired thickness. Furthermore, high resolution atomic force microscopy is applied to investigate the surfaces of starting crystals and both wet-chemically and micromechanically exfoliated sheet stacks aiming at exploring whether exfoliation proceeds with preservation of surface periodicity and with a low frequency of sheet rupturing. These investigations also aimed at uncovering possible point defects and domain (grain) boundaries in the surfaces. It appears that all investigated objects have a high molecular scale perfection and that both exfoliation methods proceed mild enough to largely preserve the molecular structure of the 2D polymer including the not covalently bonded template molecules being part of the crystal packing.

A Langmuir-Blodgett film consisting of a dense array of trifunctional monomers bearing three 1,8-diazaanthracene units is polymerized at an air/water interface or after transfer on solid substrates. The transfer does not affect the excimer fluorescence of the film, indicating that the monomers' packing with their diazaanthracene units stacked face-to-face is retained-a prerequisite for successful polymerization. The monomer film can be polymerized in confined areas on solid substrates by UV irradiation with a confocal microscope laser. The underlying chemistry of the polymerization, a [4+4]-cycloaddition of the diazaanthracene units, leads to disappearance of the fluorescence in the irradiated regions which enables writing into the monolayer on a µm scale-thus the term "molecular paper." The reaction can be reversed by heating which leads to a recovery of the fluorescence and to erasing of the writing. The behavior of compound 2 [1,3,5-tri(2,2'-bipyridin-5-yl)benzene] with three bipyridine units arranged in a star geometry is investigated in the presence and absence of Ni(ClO 4 ) 2 . Its properties at the air-water interface as well as after transfer onto a solid substrate are studied by several techniques including Brewster angle microscopy, X-ray reflectivity, neutron reflectivity, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Rutherford backscattering spectrometry, and atomic force microscopy combined with optical microscopy. It is found that compound 2 within the monolayers formed stays almost vertical at the interface and that at high Ni 2+ /2 (Ni 2+ /2 = 4000, 20'000) ratios two of the three bipyridine units of 2 are complexed, resulting in supramolecular sheets that are likely composed of arrays of linear metal-organic complexation polymers.

A series of novel quinones was synthesized by reacting tetrabromo- p -benzoquinone with amino oligo(ethylene glycol) dendrons of generation numbers g = 0-2. According to the performed shake-flask experiments, their aqueous solubility ( S = 18 mg l -1 -1.6 g ml -1 ) and partition coefficients (log  P oct/wat = 2.53-0.21) can be tuned in a wide range as a function of g . In vitro cytotoxicity assays of tetrabromo- p -benzoquinone and its derivatives against MCF-7 human breast cancer cells showed a concentration- and generation-specific biological activity with IC 50 -values as low as 0.8 μM. Further investigations revealed a considerable selectivity against cancer cells, as indicated by a weak cytotoxicity against human skin fibroblast cells (>80% survival) within the studied range of concentrations. The results demonstrate that these novel amino oligo(ethylene glycol) dendrons depict versatile tools to ameliorate physical and pharmacological characteristics of extremely hydrophobic molecules and make them susceptible to biological applications.

The single-crystal-to-single-crystal (scsc) synthesis of a 2D polymer based on photochemically triggered [2 + 2]-cycloaddition is reported. Both monomer and polymer single crystals are analyzed by X-ray diffraction, which is the first case of a scsc two-dimensional polymerization based on this cycloaddition and the third ever case for a scsc synthesis of a 2D polymer. The product crystals at quantitative conversion are wet-exfoliated under mild conditions and afford countless features that are single and double layers as judged by their AFM heights of h AFM ≈ 1.2 ± 0.5 and 2.2 ± 0.5 nm, respectively. The X-ray-structure-based molecular weight of the 2D polymers and their degree of polymerization per μm 2 are M = 360 MDa and P n = 464 900, respectively. The sheet size is on the order of 5 × 5 μm 2 .

Dendronized polymer-enzyme conjugates are large, water-soluble macromolecular structures built from a linear, fully synthetic, dendronized polymer (denpol), and several copies of enzyme molecules covalently bound to the peripheral functional groups of the denpol. Since denpol chains comprise repeating units with regularly branched side chains (dendrons), denpols have a cylindrical shape and are much thicker than conventional linear polymers. Depending on the dendron generation and chemical structure, denpols may have a large number of functional groups on their surface, exposed to the aqueous medium in which they are dissolved. Enzymes (and also other molecules) can be attached to these functional groups, for example, via a stable bis-aryl hydrazone (BAH) bond. The dendronized polymer scaffold might also serve as a nanoarmor and stabilize the delicate enzymes. One of the denpols which can be used for the preparation of denpol-enzyme conjugates is de-PG2. It has a poly(methacrylate) backbone and consists of second-generation dendrons with four peripheral amino groups in each repeating unit. The synthesis of de-PG2 and the preparation of a de-PG2 conjugate carrying BAH-linked proteinase K (proK), as an example, are described here for applications in the field of enzyme immobilization on solid surfaces. Scaling behavior of one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) polymers in dilute solution is discussed with the goal of stimulating experimental work by chemists, physicists, and material scientists in the emerging field of 2D polymers. The arguments are based on renormalization-group theory, which is explained for a general audience. Many ideas and methods successfully applied to 1D polymers are found not to work if one goes to 2D polymers. The role of the various states exhibiting universal behavior is turned upside down. It is expected that solubility will be a serious challenge for 2D polymers. Therefore, given the crucial importance of solutions in characterization and processing, synthetic concepts are proposed that allow the local bending rigidity and the molar mass to be tuned and the long-range interactions to be engineered, all with the goal of preventing the polymer from falling into flat or compact states., (© 2016 The Authors. Aspects of size, structural (im)perfection, inner density, and guest molecule loading capacity of dendronized polymers (DPs) of high generation (6≤g≤8) in aqueous solution are studied using electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy on amphiphilic, spin-labeled guest molecules. The results show that the interior of the charged DPs is strongly polar, especially in comparison to their lower generation (1-4) analogues. This is a direct sign that large amounts of water penetrate the DP surface, reflecting the structural (im)perfections of these high-generation DPs and much lower segmental densities than theoretically achievable. Images obtained with atomic force microscopy reveal that the high-generation DPs do not aggregate and give further insights into the structural imperfections. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopic data further show that despite their structural imperfections, these DPs can bind and release large numbers of amphiphilic molecules. It is concluded that attention should be paid to their synthesis, for which a protocol needs to be developed that avoids the relatively large amount of defects generated in the direct conversion of a generation g=4 DP to a generation g=6 DP, which had to be used here., (© 2016 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Dendronized polymers exhibit defined structures with bulky side chains (dendrons) on a linear polymer backbone. Upon reaction with radicals, chromophores close to the backbone were bleached. The reaction rate and yield decreased with increasing dendron size, demonstrating that the inside of dendronized polymers can be "shielded" by bulky dendrons from access by reactive species.

The persistence length of cationic dendronized polymers adsorbed onto oppositely charged substrates was studied by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and quantitative image analysis. One can find that a decrease in the ionic strength leads to an increase of the persistence length, but the nature of the substrate and of the generation of the side dendrons influence the persistence length substantially. The strongest effects as the ionic strength is being changed are observed for the fourth generation polymer adsorbed on mica, which is a hydrophilic and highly charged substrate. However, the observed dependence on the ionic strength is much weaker than the one predicted by the Odijk, Skolnik, and Fixman (OSF) theory for semi-flexible chains. Low-generation polymers show a variation with the ionic strength that resembles the one observed for simple and flexible polyelectrolytes in solution. For high-generation polymers, this dependence is weaker. Similar dependencies are found for silica and gold substrates. The observed behavior is probably caused by different extents of screening of the charged groups, which is modified by the polymer generation, and to a lesser extent, the nature of the substrate. For highly ordered pyrolytic graphite (HOPG), which is a hydrophobic and weakly charged substrate, the electrostatic contribution to the persistence length is much smaller. In the latter case, we suspect that specific interactions between the polymer and the substrate also play an important role.

This work proves the existence and chemical addressability of defined edge groups of a 2D polymer. Pseudohexagonally prismatic single crystals consisting of layered stacks of a 2D polymer are used. They should expose anthracene-based edge groups at the six (100) but not at the two pseudohexagonal (001) and (001̅) faces. The crystals are reacted with the isotopically enriched dienophiles maleic anhydride and a C18-alkyl chain-modified maleimide. In both cases the corresponding Diels-Alder adducts between these reagents and the edge groups are formed as confirmed by solid state NMR spectroscopy. The same applies to a maleimide derivative carrying a BODIPY dye which was chosen for its fluorescence to be out of the range of the self-fluorescence of the 2D polymer crystals stemming from contained template molecules. If the crystals are excited at λ = 633 nm, their (100) faces and thus their rims fluoresce brightly, while the pseudohexagonal faces remain silent. This is visible when the crystals lie on a pseudohexagonal face. Lambda-mode laser scanning microscopy confirms this fluorescence to originate from the BODIPY dye. Micromechanical exfoliation of the dye-modified crystals results in thinner sheet packages which still exhibit BODIPY fluorescence right at the rim of these packages. This work establishes the chemical nature of the edge groups of a 2D polymer and is also the first implementation of an edge group modification similar to end group modifications of linear polymers.

Two series of dendronized polymers (DPs) of generations g = 1-4 with different levels of dendritic substitution (low and high) and a solvatochromic probe at g = 1 level are used to study their swelling behavior in a collection of solvents largely differing in polarity as indicated by the Kamlet-Taft parameters. This is done by measuring the UV-Vis spectra of all samples in all solvents and determining the longest wavelength absorptions ( λ max ). The λ max values fall into a range defined by the extreme situations, when the solvatochromic probe is either fully surrounded by solvent or completely shielded against it. The former situation is achieved in a model compound and the latter situation is believed to be reached when in a poor solvent the dendritic shell around the backbone is fully collapsed. We observe that solvent penetration into the interior of the DPs decreases with increasing g and does so faster for the more highly dendritically substituted series than for the less highly substituted one. Interestingly, the swelling of the more highly substituted DP series already at the g = 4 level has decreased to approximately 20% of that at the g = 1 level which supports an earlier proposal that high g DPs can be viewed as nano-sized molecular objects. Furthermore, when comparing these two DP series with a g = 1-6 series of dendrimers investigated by Fréchet et al. it becomes evident that even the less substituted series of DPs is much less responsive to solvent changes as assessed by the solvatochromic probe than the dendrimers, suggesting the branches around the (polymeric) core in DPs to be more densely packed compared to those in dendrimers, thus, establishing a key difference between these two dendritic macromolecules.

A two-dimensional covalent organic monolayer was synthesized from simple aromatic triamine and dialdehyde building blocks by dynamic imine chemistry at the air/water interface (Langmuir-Blodgett method). The obtained monolayer was characterized by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy, which unambiguously confirmed the formation of a large (millimeter range), unimolecularly thin aromatic polyimine sheet. The imine-linked chemical structure of the obtained monolayer was characterized by tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, and the peak assignment was supported by spectra simulated by density functional theory. Given the modular nature and broad substrate scope of imine formation, the work reported herein opens up many new possibilities for the synthesis of customizable 2D polymers and systematic studies of their structure-property relationships., (© 2016 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Creation of polymers comprised of repeat units that can create topologically planar macromolecules (rather than linear) has been the topic of several recent studies in the field of synthetic polymer chemistry. Such novel macromolecules, known as 2D polymers, are the result of advanced synthetic methodology which allows creation of monolayer sheets with a periodic internal structure and functional groups placed at predetermined sites under mild conditions. Given the promising potentials of 2D polymers, this feature paper aims at discussing the concept of these novel macromolecules from a topological viewpoint in Section 1. This is followed by spotlighting the expected behavior of 2D polymers in the context of polymer physics (entropy elasticity, strength, percolation, and persistence) and polymer chemistry (copolymers and growth kinetics) in Section 2. Section 3 delineates synthetic and analytical matters associated with 2D polymers followed by a brief final section highlighting the potential of these sheet-like macromolecules for application purposes. We hope this article will trigger the interest of chemists, physicists and engineers to help develop this encouraging new class of materials further such that societally relevant applications will be accessible in the market soon.

Synthetic covalent monolayer sheets and their subclass, two-dimensional polymers are of particular interest in materials science because of their special dimensionality which renders them very different from any bulk matter. However, structural analysis of such entities is rather challenging, and there is a clear need for additional analytical methods. The present study shows how tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) can be performed on monomer monolayers and the covalent sheets prepared from them by [4 + 4]-cycloaddition to explore rather complex structural and mechanistic issues. TERS is a surface analytical method that combines the high lateral resolution of scanning probe microscopy (SPM) with a greatly enhanced Raman scattering intensity. The high spatial resolution (<60 nm) and the significantly improved sensitivity (contrast factor of >4000) compared to confocal Raman microscopy provides new insights into the formation of this new and exciting material, namely significant consumption of the reactive units (anthracenes) and exclusion of the alternative [4 + 2]-cycloaddition. Moreover, due to the high lateral resolution, it was possible to find a first spectroscopic hint for step growth as the dominant mechanism in the formation of these novel monolayer sheets. In addition, TERS was used to get first insights into the phase behavior of a comonomer mixture.

We present the synthesis of a two-dimensional polymer at the air/water interface and its nm-resolution imaging. Trigonal star, amphiphilic monomers bearing three anthraceno groups on a central triptycene core are confined at the air/water interface. Compression followed by photopolymerization on the interface provides the two-dimensional polymer. Analysis by scanning tunneling microscopy suggests that the polymer is periodic with ultrahigh pore density.

The internal organization of macromonomers (MGs) consisting of all-thiophene dendrons of generation g = 2 and 3 attached to a phenyl core, as well as of the dendronized polymers resulting from polymerization of these macromonomers (PG2 and PG3, respectively), has been investigated using theoretical methods. The conformational preferences of the MGs, determined using density functional theory calculations, are characterized by the relative orientation between dendrons and core. We find that the strain of the MGs increases with the generation number and is alleviated by small conformational re-arrangements of the peripheral thiophene rings. The conformations obtained for the MGs have subsequently been used to construct models for the dendronized polymers. Classical molecular dynamics simulations have evidenced that the interpenetration of dendrons belonging to different repeat units is very small for PG2. In contrast, the degree of interpenetration is found to be very high for PG3, which also shows a significant degree of backfolding (i.e. occurrence of peripheral methyl groups approaching the backbone). Consequently, PG2 behaves as a conventional linear flexible polymer bearing bulk pendant groups, whereas PG3 is better characterized as a semirigid homogeneous cylinder. The two polymers are stabilized by π-π stacking interactions, even though these are significantly more abundant for PG3 than for PG2; the average numbers of interactions per repeat unit are 3.0 and 8.8 for PG2 and PG3, respectively. While in these interactions the thiophene rings can adopt either parallel (sandwich) or perpendicular (T-shaped) dispositions, the former scenario turns out to be the most abundant.

Two-dimensional materials have moved into the spotlight of researchers. The isolation of single graphene sheets has shown that restricted dimensionality can lead to interesting properties. Bottom-up synthesis of organic, covalently-bonded structures is, however, still challenging. In this publication we give a synopsis of a recently published monomer that is easily accessible and reversibly provides chiral two-dimensional polymer single crystals, which can be exfoliated into nanometer-thin sheets and show promise for applications in, for example, nonlinear optics and ultrathin membranes.

By using structurally similar amphiphilic monomers, it is shown that compressed monolayers of varying amounts of such monomers at the air/water interface can be converted by photo-irradiation into the corresponding covalently connected monolayer sheets. Since one of the monomers carries three anthracene units and the other three 1,8-diaza-anthracene units, the growth reaction is proposed to take place through photochemically achieved [4+4]-cycloaddition between pairs of these units that are co-facially (face-to-face) arranged, to furnish the corresponding covalent dimers. While evidence for both homodimers is amply available, the existence of the heterodimer needs to be established with the help of a model reaction to support the conceptual aspect of this work, copolymerization in two dimensions. The sheet copolymers exhibit substantial robustness in that they can be spanned over 20 × 20 μm(2)-sized holes without rupturing under their own weight. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) studies reveal that the monomers are incorporated into the sheet copolymers according to feed. The term molecular object (MO) is introduced to describe single, shape persistent macromolecules that retain their form and mesoscopic dimensions irrespective of solvent quality and adsorption onto a surface. The concept is illustrated with results concerning homologous series of dendronized polymers (DP). In particular, we discuss imaging experiments quantifying deformation upon adsorption, defect characterization, and atomistic molecular dynamics simulations of DP structure. We argue that MOs such as high generation DP, with their large dimensions and high internal density, provide an opportunity to address fundamental questions regarding the onset of bulk-like behavior in single molecules. Illustrative examples of such questions concern the smallest MO exhibiting a glass transition, glassy behavior or a constant bulk density. The characteristics of DP MO are highlighted by comparison to polymer beads, polymeric micelles, globular proteins, and carbon nanotubes. We discuss future research directions and speculate on possibilities involving multiarmed and toroid DP and the effect of DP on friction and rheology, as well as their utilization for nanoconstruction.

The rise of graphene, a natural two-dimensional polymer (2DP) with topologically planar repeat units, has challenged synthetic chemistry, and has highlighted that accessing equivalent covalently bonded sheet-like macromolecules has, until recently, not been achieved. Here we show that non-centrosymmetric, enantiomorphic single crystals of a simple-to-make monomer can be photochemically converted into chiral 2DP crystals and cleanly reversed back to the monomer. X-ray diffraction established unequivocal structural proof for this synthetic 2DP, which has an all-carbon scaffold and can be synthesized on the gram scale. The monomer crystals are highly robust, can be easily grown to sizes greater than 1 mm and the resulting 2DP crystals exfoliated into nanometre-thin sheets. This unique combination of features suggests that these 2DPs could find use in membranes and nonlinear optics.

The facile synthesis of a rotor-shaped compound with two stacked triazine units, which are symmetrically connected by three anthracene blades through oxygen linkers, is presented. This new double-decker, which is a potential monomer for two-dimensional polymerization, was synthesized by using readily available, cheap building blocks, exploiting the known selectivity difference for the nucleophilic substitution of cyanuric chloride. The crystal structure of a C3h symmetric rotor-shaped compound with 9,10-dihydroanthracene blades, which is a direct precursor to the targeted monomer, and the crystal structure of the new double-decker with the desired C3h symmetry, are also reported. The synthetic efforts were preceded by a computational analysis, which was triggered by the question of conformational stability of the potential monomer. Two stable conformers could be found, and the barrier for the transition path in the gas phase between these conformers was determined by quantum chemical calculations. Exploratory Born-Oppenheimer molecular-dynamics simulations revealed a strong influence of solvent-solute interactions on the stability of the conformers, which resulted in an energetic preference of the C3h symmetric conformation of the double-decker., (© 2014 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Monolayer sheets have gained attention due to the unique properties derived from their two-dimensional structure. One of the key challenges in sheet modification/synthesis is to exchange integral parts while keeping them intact. We describe site-to-site transmetalation of Zn(2+) in the netpoints of cm(2)-sized, metal-organic sheets by Fe(2+), Co(2+), and Pb(2+). This novel transformation was done both randomly and at predetermined patterns defined by photolithography to create monolayer sheets composed of different netpoints. All transmetalated sheets are mechanically strong enough to be spanned over 20 × 20 μm(2) sized holes. Density functional theory calculations provide both a model for the molecular structure of an Fe(2+)-based sheet and first insights into how transmetalation proceeds. Such transmetalated sheets with random and patterned netpoints can be considered as two-dimensional analogues of linear copolymers. Their nanoscale synthesis presents an advance in monolayer/polymer chemistry with applications in fields such as surface coating, molecular electronics, device fabrication, imaging, and sensing.

Several applications require strong noncovalent adhesion of polymers to substrates. Graft and branched polymers have proven superior to linear polymers, but the molecular mechanism is still unclear. Here, this question is addressed on the single molecule level with an atomic force microscopy (AFM) based method. It is determined how the presence of side chains and their molecular architecture influence the adhesion and the mobility of polymers on solid substrates. Surprisingly, the adhesion of mobile polymers cannot significantly be improved by side chains or their architecture. Only for immobile polymers a significantly higher maximum rupture force for graft, bottle-brush, and branched polymers compared to linear chains is measured. Our results suggest that a combination of polymer architecture and strong molecular bonds is necessary to increase the polymer-surface contact area. An increased contact area together with intrachain cohesion (e.g., by entanglements) leads to improved polymer adhesion. These findings may prove useful for the design of stable polymer coatings.

A nano-handling technique based on atomic force microscopy (AFM) is presented that allows reliable measuring of force-extension profiles of single-polymer molecules. The basis of the method is a properly functionalized solid substrate, to which a small amount of the polymers in question is adsorbed. The sample is first imaged in amplitude modulation mode in solution with a functionalized AFM cantilever, and a polymer chain is picked up with the AFM tip at one of the ends of the polymer molecule. Force curves are recorded by stretching the attached polymer molecule many times. After the force experiments, the molecule is imaged again. In this fashion, one can ascertain that the force experiments are truly carried out with one individual molecule. With this technique, the force response of amino-functionalized dendronized polymers was studied and it could be accurately described by the freely jointed chain model with chain elasticity. A monotonic dependence of the mechanical properties of these polymers up to generation 4 was found. The elastic constant was independent of the generation and solution composition. On the other hand, the effective Kuhn length increased with the generation at higher salt concentrations. The mechanical response of dendronized polymers can be tuned with solution composition.

In an attempt to relate atomistic information to the rheological response of a large dendritic object, interand intramolecular hydrogen bonds and p,p-interactions have been characterized in a dendronized polymer (DP) that consists of a polymethylmethacrylate backbone with tree-like branches of generation four (PG4) and contains both amide and aromatic groups. Extensive atomistic molecular dynamics simulations have been carried out on (i) an isolated PG4 chain and (ii) ten dimers formed by two PG4 chains associated with different degrees of interpenetration. Results indicate that the amount of nitrogen atoms involved in hydrogen bonding is ~11% while ~15% of aromatic groups participate in p,pinteractions. Furthermore, in both cases intramolecular interactions clearly dominate over intermolecular ones, while exhibiting markedly different behaviors. Specifically, the amount of intramolecular hydrogen bonds increases when the interpenetration of the two chains decreases, whereas intramolecular p,pinteractions remain practically insensitive to the amount of interpenetration. In contrast, the strength of the corresponding two types of intermolecular interactions decreases with interpenetration. Although the influence of complexation on the density and cross-sectional radius is relatively small, interpenetration affects significantly the molecular length of the DP. These results support the idea of treating DPs as long colloidal molecules.

The shape-persistent monomer 3 with its three 1,8-diazaanthracene (DAA) units is spread and compressed at the air/water interface and the layer then converted into a 1.5 nm thick covalent monolayer sheet by photoirradiation under ambient conditions. The sheet obtained under these extremely mild conditions is mechanically stable to carry its own weight when spanned over TEM grids. While its molecular structure cannot be given yet with certainty, it is likely to be the result of [4 + 4]-cycloaddition dimerizations between the DAA units of neighboring monomers. Evidence is based on the wavelength of the monomer fluorescence emission, the kinetics of this emission's intensity decay with irradiation time, and the mechanical sheet stability that suggests a surpassing of percolation threshold. Finally, the thermal stability of the sheet is investigated.

Oligofunctional terpyridine-based monomers are spread at an air/water interface, where they are connected with transition metal salts such as Fe(II) into mechanically coherent monolayer sheets of macroscopic dimension. The conversions of these processes are determined by XPS for several monomer/metal ion combinations. The sheets are transferred onto TEM grids, the 20 × 20 square micrometer sized holes of which can be spanned. AFM indentation experiments provide in-plane elastic moduli which are compared with naturally occurring sheets such as graphene. The new organometallic sheets are also used to create multilayer assemblies on square centimeter length scales on solid substrates.
