Masters in Environmental Science, North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is a polyphagous pest with a preference for crops which belong to the Poaceae family. Spodoptera frugiperda is native to the tropical and sub-tropical regions of South America and is one of the most serious maize pests in the Americas. This pest recently invaded the tropical regions of Africa, where it is considered to be a serious threat to food security. Due to the absence of diapause in S. frugiperda, its biology and distribution is strongly influenced by low temperatures. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of temperature on the development and reproduction of this species. The effect of temperature on the development and reproduction of S. frugiperda was studied at five different temperature regimes, namely 18, 22, 26, 30 and 32 ± 1 °C, at 65 ± 5 % relative humidity (RH) and a 14L: 10D photoperiod. Fertility was found to be high with all eggs that hatched at temperatures ranging from 18 to 32 °C. Development of eggs at a constant temperature of 18 °C was, however, slow and the percentage of eggs that survived very low. Continuous low temperatures, although above the lower thermal limit, will therefore slow development down and may reduce population dynamics as a result of high mortality. The optimal range for egg, larval and egg-to-adult development of S. frugiperda in South Africa was determined to be between 26 and 32 °C. The development rate of S. frugiperda increased linearly with increasing temperatures between 18 and 30 °C and larval survival was also the highest between 26 and 30 °C. The optimum temperature with the most rapid development rate and lowest mortality for larvae was at 30 °C. Pupal development time varied from 7.82 to 30.68 days (32 - 18 °C) with a mean pupal development time of 17.06 days at 22 °C, but only 11.43 days at 26 °C. The development period of the egg-to-adult stage decreased from 71.35 days at 18 °C to 20.27 days at 32 °C. Based on linear regression analysis of development rate at all temperatures, a minimum temperature threshold of 13.01 °C was calculated for egg development and 12.12 °C for larvae, 13.24 °C for pupae and 12.57 °C for egg-to-adult development. Degree-day requirements for S. frugiperda egg and larval development was determined at 35.72 ± 1.30 °D and 202.67 ± 4.45 °D respectively when larvae were reared on sweet corn kernels. Pupae needed 147.06 °D for development and development of the life cycle (egg-to-adult), 391.01 ± 1.22 °D. The number of larval instars was determined by using head capsule widths that ranged from 0.30, 0.46, 0.80, 1.40, 1.90, and 2.60 mm. All successive instars increased in size according to Dyar’s ratio. The threshold temperatures determined in this study can be used in a model to estimate the number of generations at specific localities where the crop host plants are cultivated. It can also be used in a model to determine areas suitable for cultivation to which S. frugiperda can migrate from its overwintering sites, as well as areas with suitable environmental conditions for persistent occurrence. Oviposition occurred at all the temperatures and the mean number of eggs laid by S. frugiperda was 224.4 and 979.2 at 32 and 22 °C respectively. There was a strong negative correlation between temperature, oviposition period and longevity of moths. The optimum temperature for oviposition was determined to be between 18 and 26 °C. Results from this study on the thermal constants and lower and upper threshold temperatures of S. frugiperda can be used to predict the impact of climate change on the distribution and population growth of this pest. 34. Activity and side effects of imatinib in patients with gastrointestinal stromal tumors: data from a german multicenter trial

Abstract Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) are mesenchymal tumors that in the past were classified as leiomyosarcomas or leiomyomas not responding to standard sarcoma chemotherapy. In several phase I and II trials the efficacy and safety of imatinib was shown before the largest trial ever performed in a single sarcoma entity revealed response rates (CR/PR) of 52%. This multicenter phase II trial presented here was performed to open access to imatinib for patients with unresectable or metastastatic GIST when the EORTC 62005 trial had been closed before imatinib was approved in Germany. It was designed to follow the best clinical response and to assess the efficacy, safety and tolerability of imatinib 400 mg/d in patients with unresectable or metastatic gastrointestinal stromal tumor. 95 patients were treated in this trial with Imatinib 400 mg/d. Four patients (4.6%) attained a complete response and 26 patients (29.9%) a partial response to imatinib treatment. Forty-one patients (47.1%) revealed a stable disease and 16 patients (18.4%) had a progressive disease. Of the progressive patients 22% showed a partial response and 67% showed stable disease after escalating the dose to 800 mg. According to SWOG tumor response classification, 66 patients (70%) were free of progression within the first year of treatment. Seventy-one patients (74.7%) experienced adverse events or severe adverse events with a suspected relationship to the study drug. Among these, the most common were nausea (n = 27 patients, 28.4%), eyelid edema and peripheral edema in 23 patients each (24.2%), diarrhea in 20 patients (21.1%), muscle cramps in 15 patients (15.8%) and fatigue in 13 patients (13.7%). Imatinib 400 mg/d led to disease stabilisation in 81,6% of patients with unresectable or metastatic malignant GIST. Thirty-four percent of patients attained a tumor remission (partial or complete response). The safety profile of imatinib based on adverse event assessment is favorable. Imatinib is generally well tolerated in patients with gastrointestinal stromal tumors.

Measurement of leaf area index (LAI) is critical to understanding many aspects of crop development, growth, and management. Availability of portable meters to estimate LAI non-destructively has greatly increased our ability to determine this parameter during the cropping season. However, with several devices on the market, each with an independent set of protocols for gathering accurate estimates of LAI, it is necessary for scientists to have comparisons of these meters under field conditions before selecting one for purchase and use. The objective of our study was to compare the LAI estimates by three meters (AccuPAR, LAI-2000, and SunScan) to LAI measured by destructive sampling. Leaf area index of two corn (Zea mays L.) hybrids, grown on a Pachic Haplustoll, was measured at the R2 stage by the four methods before and after successive thinning of plant stands. Destructively sampled LAI ranged from 4.59 to 1.25 for the initial stand to the most severe thinning. Hybrids did not differ in LAI. Ali meters underestimated LAI compared with destructive sampling. When all data from all rings of the LAI-2000 meter were included in the calculations, LAI-2000 estimates of LAI differed from those of the other two meters. However, when data from Ring 5 was removed from the calculations, estimates of LAI for the LAI-2000 improved and were indistinguishable from the other meters. The relationship between LAI estimated destructively and by each of the meters was described by a unique linear equation for each hybrid. Abstract

This paper discusses the optimal solution of Mayer's problem for globally feedback linearizable time-invariant systems subject to general nonlinear path and actuator constraints. This class of problems includes the minimum time problem, important for engineering applications. Globally feedback linearizable nonlinear systems are diffeornorphic to linear systems that consist of blocks of integrators. Using this alternate form; it is proved that the optimal solution always lies on a constraint arc. As a result of this optimal structure of the solution, efficient numerical procedures can be developed. For a single input system, this result allows to characterize and build the optimal solution. Abstract

Wir berichten uber einen 66jahrigen Patienten mit nichttransmuralem Myokardinfarkt bei koronarer Zweigefaserkrankung. Bei der Echo- und transosophagealen multiplanen Echokardiographie praoperativ vor dem herzchirurgischen Eingriff fand sich ein Tumor im Bereich des Vorhofseptums unbekannter Dignitat. Die Computer- und Kernspintomographie ergaben keine extrakardialen pathologischen Befunde. Durch eine transosophageale Echokardiographie-gesteuerte Biopsie des Vorhofseptums uber die Vena femoralis und den rechten Vorhof konnte sehr fruh intra vitam die Diagnose eines hochmalignen B-Zell-Non-Hodgkin-Lymphoms ohne Thorakotomie gestellt werden. Histopathologisch und immunhistochemisch wurde die Diagnose gesichert. Fruhzeitig wurde eine zytostatische Therapie eingeleitet. Die transosophageal-echokardiographisch gesteuerte Biopsie wurde weltweit unseres Wissens noch nicht beschrieben.

Abstract

Transient cardiac ventricular dysfunction or sudden cardiac deaths have been reported for male athletes participating in marathon racing. Less is known about the myocardial response in females. We examined natriuretic peptides and cardiac troponins in female athletes after a marathon.At the 31st real,- Berlin Marathon plasma levels of NT-pro-BNP, BNP, cTnI and cTnT were measured in 15 women (age 35+/-6 years; finishing times between 3:22 h and 5:21 h) at four different time points (before, immediately after, day one and day three).An increase in [NT-pro-BNP] was observed immediately after the marathon (median [NT-pro-BNP] before: 39.6 pg ml(-1), after: 138.6 pg ml(-1), p=0.003) with a further increase on day one. [BNP] did not increase immediately after the marathon but increased on day one (median [BNP] before: 15 pg ml(-1), day one: 27.35 pg ml(-1), p=0.006). On day three, [NT-pro-BNP] and [BNP] returned to initial values. [cTnI] was under the detection limit prior to the marathon in all runners. [cTnT] was under the detection limit before the marathon except in one runner who presented a concentration of 0.03 ng ml(-1). Cardiac troponins (median [cTnl] after: 0.098 ng ml(-1), p=0.028; median [cTnT] after: 0.032 ng ml(-1), p=0.012) increased immediately after the marathon and returned to initial values on day one [cTnT] and three [cTnI].Parameters representing cardiac stress increased in females after a marathon. Different kinetics of natriuretic peptides BNP and NT-pro-BNP post-marathon could be due to their different half-lives and dependence on renal function. The increase of cTnI and cTnT may result from minor myocardial lesions.
