Abstract

The next generation instrument for ground-based gamma-ray astronomy will be the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), consisting of approximately 100 telescopes in three sizes, built on two sites with one each in the Northern and Southern Hemi- spheres. Up to 40 of these will be Medium Size Telescopes (MSTs) which will dominate sensitivity in the core energy range. Since 2012, a full size mechanical prototype for the modified 12 m Davies-Cotton design MST has been in operation in Berlin. This doc- ument describes the techniques which have been implemented to calibrate and optimise the mechanical and optical performance of the prototype, and gives the results of over three years of observations and measurements. Pointing calibration techniques will be discussed, along with the development of a bending model, and calibration of the CCD cameras used for pointing measurements. Abstract

The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), is an international project for the next generation ground- based observatory for gamma-ray astronomy in the energy range from 20 GeV to 300 TeV. The sensitivity in the core energy range will be dominated by up to 40 Medium-Sized Telescopes (MSTs). The MSTs, of Davies-Cotton type with a 12 m diameter reflector are currently in the prototype phase. A full-size mechanical telescope structure has been assembled in Berlin. The telescope is partially equipped with different mirror prototypes, which are currently being tested and evaluated for performances characteristics. Abstract

Pointing calibration is an offline correction applied in order to obtain the true pointing direction of a telescope. The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) aims to have the precision to determine the position of point-like as well as slightly extended sources, with the goal of systematic errors less than 7 arc seconds in space angle. This poster describes the pointing calibration concept being developed for the CTA Medium Size Telescope (MST) prototype at Berlin-Adlershof, showing test results and preliminary measurements. The MST pointing calibration method uses two CCD cameras, mounted on the telescope dish, to determine the true pointing of the telescope. The "Lid CCD" is aligned to the optical axis of the telescope, calibrated with LEDs on the dummy gamma-camera lid; the "Sky CCD" is pre-aligned to the Lid CCD and the transformation between the Sky and Lid CCD camera fields of view is precisely modelled with images from special pointing runs which are also used to determine the pointing model. Abstract

The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) project is the initiative to build the next-generation gamma-ray observatory. With more than 100 telescopes planned to be deployed in two sites, CTA is one of the largest astronomical facilities under construction. The Array Control and Data Acquisition (ACADA) system will be the central element of on-site CTA Observatory operations. The mission of the ACADA system is to manage and optimize the telescope array operations at each of the CTA sites. To that end, ACADA will provide all necessary means for the efficient execution of observations, and for the handling of the several Gb/s generated by each individual CTA telescope. The ACADA system will contain a real-time analysis pipeline, dedicated to the automatic generation of science alert candidates based on the inspection of data being acquired. These science alerts, together with external alerts arriving from other scientific installations, will permit ACADA to modify ongoing observations at sub-minute timescales in order to study high-impact scientific transient phenomena. Abstract

Journal of High Energy Physics 2012. 3 (2012): 020 reproduced by permission of Scuola Internazionale Superiore di Studi Avanzati (SISSA), Scaled momentum distributions for the strange hadrons KS0 and Λ/Λ were measured in deep inelastic ep scattering with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 330 pb-1. The evolution of these distribuitions with the photon virtuality, Q2, was studied in the kinematic region 10 < Q2 < 40000 GeV2 and 0.001 < x < 0.75, where x is the Bjorken scaling variable. Clear scaling violations are observed. Predictions based on different approaches to fragmentation were compared to the measurements. Leading-logarithm parton-shower Monte Carlo calculations interfaced to the Lund string fragmentation model describe the data reasonably well in the whole range measured. Next- to-leading-order QCD calculations based on fragmentation functions, FFs, extracted from e+e- data alone, fail to describe the measurements. The calculations based on FFs extracted from a global analysis including e+e-, ep and pp data give an improved description. The measurements presented in this paper have the potential to further constrain the FFs of quarks, anti-quarks and gluons yielding KS 0 and Λ/ Λ̄ strange hadrons., We thank the DESY Directorate for their strong support and encouragement. Abstract

Physics letters / B 338(4), 483-496 (1994). doi:10.1016/0370-2693(94)90804-4, Energy flows in deep inelastic electron-proton scattering are investigated at a centre-of-mass energy of 269 GeV for the range $Q^2 ≥ 10 \text{ GeV}^2$ using the ZEUS detector. A comparison is made between events with and without a large rapidity gap between the hadronic system and the proton direction. The energy flows, corrected for detector acceptance and resolution, are shown for these two classes of events in both the HERA laboratory frame and the Breit frame. From the differences in the shapes of these energy flows we conclude that QCD radiation is suppressed in the large-rapidity-gap eents compared to the events without a large rapidity gap., Published by North-Holland Publ., Amsterdam
