1. African Outreach Workshop 1974.

Abstract

This report discusses the 1974 African Outreach Workshop planned and coordinated by the African Studies Program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Its major aim was to assist teachers in developing curriculum units on African using materials available in their local community. A second aim was for the African Studies Program to serve the community outside the University by making available accurate and comprehensive knowledge on Africa and Africans. Part 1 of the report discusses the organization of the workshop and its general impact during the following school year. Part 2 presents curriculum materials developed for three schools during the workshop, and editorial comments on the implementation of the curricula during the period of the workshop and the following year. Sample materials include the following: (a) Africa: Operation Exposure, A Mini-Unit; (b) African Masks; An Art Unit; (c) A Unit on African Culture for Grades 2 and 4; (d) Sixth Grade Africa Unit Related to the Taba Curriculum; and (e) A Curriculum Outline for Studying About Africa in Elementary Schools. 2. Evaluating Materials About Africa for Children.

Abstract

Choosing texts, media, and literature about Africa is a difficult task for school librarians who have not studied Africa in detail; however it is possible to evaluate the available materials on the basis of several important criteria. These include the authority of the author, the dates of preparation and publication, and the accuracy of illustrations. Blatant biases can be easily recognized, but attention should also be paid to the more subtle forms of bias in the use of stereotypes or evaluative labels to typify whole groups. Over half of the children's materials on Africa appear in publishers' series, most of which use a European conceptual framework in the discussion of economics, history, religion, and social life. Such a viewpoint distorts the presentation of African life and invites negative comparisons to western life. African materials should present the African perspective and values and avoid overgeneralization about this very diverse continent. Many of the available books are fiction or folklore for which there are additional considerations: the authenticity and provenance of the tale; and human dignity in characterization, dialog, and plot. Abstract

These annotated bibliographies were originally developed for in-service workshops for elementary and secondary school teachers who are teaching about Africa or interested in developing curricula about Africa. The bibliographies are quite selective. They include only materials which are current, relatively accurate and unbiased, and give an authentic and representative depiction of Africa. The following areas are covered: (1) selected sources for teaching about Africa; (2) children's books for teaching about Africa, specifically for kindergarten-grade two and grades 4-6; (3) resources for teaching sixth graders about Bushmen and West African cultures; (4) children's books and audio-visual resources for supplementing a seventh grade curriculum on Africa; (5) resources for teaching about African art, music, dance and literature; (6) African recipes for American children to cook; (7) biographies of famous African men and women; (8) materials aimed at debunking myths about Africa; (9) reference works on Africa for children; and (10) children's books on Africa published from 1973-1975. 5. Resources for Teaching about the Social Impact of AIDS in Africa.

Abstract

This 70-item annotated bibliography contains references to books, reports, and articles that can be used in college courses to teach about the social impact of the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) in Africa. The bibliography covers biological, medical, and social factors and provides examples and a framework for teaching this topic. Teachers must assemble instructional materials since textbooks currently are not available. In a prefatory essay, three basic issues are identified for teaching about AIDS in Africa: (1) identifying and acquiring relevant sources; (2) evaluating resources for accuracy and biases; and (3) providing a balanced coverage of the range of social factors. The sources include medical reports, social science research, United Nations reports, and press materials. (NL)

This document contains bibliographies for teaching children about Africa as well as descriptions and rules of African games for American children. This collection of bibliographies supplements an earlier collection, "Selected Bibliographies for Teaching Children about Subsaharan Africa." The bibliographies included here were prepared in association with the activities of the African Outreach Program at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, 1974-1976. Included in the bibliographies are resources on South Africa, Portugese Africa, Ethiopia, the Yoruba as well as fiction about Africa for supplementing social studies curricula, resources for teaching about African art, African folk tales for children, children's books with both African and Afro-American content, fiction about African children for African children, and reference sources for school children. Abstract

This annotated bibliography of children's books about Africa cites more than 800 entries written in English and published in the United States, Africa, and Europe. The books (designed for children in early elementary school through young adulthood) are evaluated in terms of the validity of the perspective of Africa which they present. Both illustrations and contents of the books are appraised for the amount and accuracy of information on Africa, and their contribution to an understanding of African culture and history for young readers. The bibliography is arranged by author. A significant portion consists of information on the authors' backgrounds, principal occupations, and qualifications. Some comparisons between various books related to the same subjects are made. Geography, name, series, subject, title and tribal indexes are provided. (ED)

Abstract

Children's fiction about Africa which has been either written in English or translated from other languages into English is discussed in this book. Covered are 542 novels and volumes of short stories written for children that were collected and read by the author before July 1977. Part I outlines several major elements of the cultural background within which children's fiction about Africa is created and read. These elements include the intellectual climate, historical development, publishing facilities, authors, and illustrators of children's fiction about Africa. Part II outlines general characteristics of dominant themes in children's fiction about Africa, discusses the fiction in relation to the background of selected authors, and examines the content of the fiction from Euro-American and African cultural and historical perspectives. The following are the major themes discussed: local-life stories, adventure stories, animal stories and safari stories, historical fiction, fantasy, and school stories. A bibliography lists general works on the subject and provides an extensive listing of American, European, and African children's fiction about Africa. The series in which the books are included, the languages from which books have been translated, and the countries in which the stories take place are indicated at the end of each bibliographic entry. Abstract

The history of and current trends in the publication of children's books in Subsaharan Africa are discussed, and the books' contents are examined. The publication of children's books for African children was started by Euroamerican missionaries in the 19th century. Publication was always related to education. With the achievement of independence, children's books with African content were needed to further the development of African nationalism. In addition, Africans needed editorial control over the production of books for their children. Thus began the process of the indigenization of publishing in Africa, which still continues today. Presently, 80 percent of published books are for children. The publication of all kinds of books has nearly doubled since 1975, but the publication of children's books has more that tripled in the same period. African children's books include a wealth of folklore. Most fiction written for African children is didactic. The adventure story is replacing the fictional child biography as the predominant type of story. The publication of African children's literature is expected to triple again before the end of this century. (RM)
