We report on a joint experimental and theoretical study of photoelectron circular dichroism (PECD) in methyloxirane. By detecting O 1s-photoelectrons in coincidence with fragment ions, we deduce the molecule's orientation and photoelectron emission direction in the laboratory frame. Thereby, we retrieve a fourfold differential PECD clearly beyond 50%. This strong chiral asymmetry is reproduced by ab initio electronic structure calculations. Providing such a pronounced contrast makes PECD of fixed-in-space chiral molecules an even more sensitive tool for chiral recognition in the gas phase., Comment: 5 figures

X-ray as well as electron diffraction are powerful tools for structure determination of molecules. Studies on randomly oriented molecules in the gas-phase address cases in which molecular crystals cannot be generated or the interaction-free molecular structure is to be addressed. Such studies usually yield partial geometrical information, such as interatomic distances. Here, we present a complementary approach, which allows obtaining insight to the structure, handedness and even detailed geometrical features of molecules in the gas phase. Our approach combines Coulomb explosion imaging, the information that is encoded in the molecular frame diffraction pattern of core-shell photoelectrons and ab initio computations. Using a loop-like analysis scheme we are able to deduce specific molecular coordinates with sensitivity even to the handedness of chiral molecules and the positions of individual atoms, as, e.g., protons., Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures

We investigate the photo-doubleionization of $H_2$ molecules with 400 eV photons. We find that the emitted electrons do not show any sign of two-center interference fringes in their angular emission distributions if considered separately. In contrast, the quasi-particle consisting of both electrons (i.e. the "dielectron") does. The work highlights the fact that non-local effects are embedded everywhere in nature where many-particle processes are involved.

The electron emission pattern of transfer-ionization in collisions of He$^{2+}$ with He was investigated for impact velocities between 0.53 a.u. and 0.77 a.u. (7 keV/u - 15 keV/u) employing recoil-ion momentum spectroscopy. This process is known to be dominated by the promotion of the 2p$\pi$ molecular orbital into the continuum which results in "banana" shaped areas of high electron momentum densities extending from the target to the projectile in velocity space in the collision plain. Asymmetries are explained by a coherent superposition of the 2p$\pi$ channel of the quasi molecular promotion with the 1s$\sigma$ channel. Here we report on an additional contribution of higher angular momentum molecular states for close collisions which emerge at smaller impact velocities. They show up as highly structured electron emission patterns in the plane perpendicular to the direction of impact.

Even though ion/atom-collision is a mature field of atomic physics great discrepancies between experiment and theoretical calculations are still common. Here we present experimental results with highest momentum resolution on single ionization of helium induced by 1\,MeV protons and compare these to different theoretical calculations. The overall agreement is strikingly good and already the first Born approximation yields good agreement between theory and experiment. This has been expected since several decades, but so far has not been accomplished. The influence of projectile coherence effects on the measured data is shortly discussed in line with an ongoing dispute on the existence of nodal structures in the electron angular emission distributions., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures

We present measurements and calculations of the momentum distribution of electrons emitted during the ion-atom collision 10 keV/u $He^{2+}+He \rightarrow He^{+} + He^{2+} + e^{-}$, which show rich structures for ion scattering angles above 2 mrad arising dominantly from two-electron states. Our calculations reveal that minima in the measured distributions are zeros in the electronic probability density resulting from vortices in the electronic current.

Using the cold target recoil ion momentum spectroscopy (COLTRIMS) technique, we have measured the simultaneous projectile and target ionization in collisions of He$^+$ projectiles with a mixture of gaseous H$_2$ and D$_2$ for an incident projectile energy of 650 keV. Motivated by Cooper et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 100, 043204 (2008)], we look for differences in the ionization cross section of the two isotopes with the highest resolution and statistical significance. Contributions of the electron-electron and electron-nucleus interactions have been clearly separated kinematically by measuring the longitudinal and transverse momentum of the recoiling ion. We find no significant isotope effect in any of our momentum distributions., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures

We investigate the contribution of Interatomic Coulombic Decay induced by ion impact in neon and argon dimers (Ne$_2$ and Ar$_2$) to the production of low energy electrons. Our experiments cover a broad range of perturbation strengths and reaction channels. We use 11.37 MeV/u S$^{14+}$, 0.125 MeV/u He$^{1+}$, 0.1625 MeV/u He$^{1+}$ and 0.150 MeV/u He$^{2+}$ as projectiles and study ionization, single and double electron transfer to the projectile as well as projectile electron loss processes. The application of a COLTRIMS reaction microscope enables us to retrieve the three-dimensional momentum vectors of the ion pairs of the fragmenting dimer into Ne$^{q+}$/Ne$^{1+}$ and Ar$^{q+}$/Ar$^{1+}$ (q = 1, 2, 3) in coincidence with at least one emitted electron.

The momentum distribution of the electron in the reaction p+He $\rightarrow$ H + He$^{2+}$ + $e$ is measured for projectile energies $E_p$=300 and 630 keV/u at very small scattering angles of hydrogen. We mainly present two dimensional distributions parallel $(k_{||})$ and perpendicular $(k_{\perp})$ to the projectile beam. Theoretical calculations were carried out within the Plane Wave First Born Approximation (PWFBA), which includes both electron emission mechanisms, shake-off and sequential capture and ionization. It is shown that electron correlations in the target wave function play the most important role in the explanation of experimentally observed backward emission. We investigate single photon double ionization (PDI) of helium at photon energies of 440 and 800 eV. We observe doubly charged ions with close to zero momentum corresponding to electrons emitted back-to-back with equal energy. These slow ions are the unique fingerprint of an elusive quasi-free PDI mechanism predicted by Amusia et al. nearly four decades years ago [J. Phys. B 8, 1248, (1975)] . It results from the non-dipole part of the electromagnetic interaction. Our experimental data are in excellent agreement with calculations performed using the convergent close coupling and time dependent close coupling methods.

We experimentally obtained a direct image of the nuclear wave functions of {H_2}^+ by dissociating the molecule via electron attachment and determining the vibrational state using the COLTRIMS technique. Our experiment visualizes the nodal structure of different vibrational states. We compare our results to the widely used reflection approximation and to quantum simulations and discuss the limits of position measurements in molecules imposed by the uncertainty principle., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

We have measured the molecular frame angular distributions of photoelectrons emitted from the Carbon K shell of fixed-in-space CO molecules for the case of simultaneous excitation of the remaining molecular ion. Normal and conjugate shake up states are observed. Photo electrons belonging to normal \Sigma -satellite lines show an angular distribution resembling that observed for the main photoline at the same electron energy. Surprisingly a similar shape is found for conjugate shake up states with \Pi -symmetry. In our data we identify shake rather than electron scattering (PEVE) as the mechanism producing the conjugate lines. The angular distributions clearly show the presence of a \Sigma -shape resonance for all of the satellite lines., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures

Using synchrotron radiation we simultaneously ionize and excite one helium atom of a helium dimer (He_2) in a shakeup process. The populated states of the dimer ion (i.e. He^[*+](n = 2; 3)-He) are found to deexcite via interatomic coulombic decay. This leads to the emission of a second electron from the neutral site and a subsequent coulomb explosion. In this letter we present a measurement of the momenta of fragments that are created during this reaction. The electron energy distribution and the kinetic energy release of the two He^+ ions show pronounced oscillations which we attribute to the structure of the vibrational wave function of the dimer ion., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

We show that a single photon can ionize the two helium atoms of the helium dimer in a distance up to 10 {\deg}A. The energy sharing among the electrons, the angular distributions of the ions and electrons as well as comparison with electron impact data for helium atoms suggest a knock-off type double ionization process. The Coulomb explosion imaging of He_2 provides a direct view of the nuclear wave function of this by far most extended and most diffuse of all naturally existing molecules., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

Results of the most sophisticated measurements in coincidence of the angular resolved K-shell photo- and Auger-electrons, and of two atomic ions produced by dissociation of N2 molecule, are analyzed. Detection of photoelectrons at certain angles allows separating the Auger decay processes of the 1{\sigma}g and 1{\sigma}u core hole states. The Auger electron angular distributions for each of these hole states are measured as a function of the kinetic energy release of two atomic ions and are compared with the corresponding theoretical angular distributions. From that comparison one can disentangle the contributions of different repulsive doubly charged molecular ion states to the Auger decay. Different kinetic energy release values are directly related to the different internuclear distances. In this way one can trace experimentally the behavior of the potential energy curves of dicationic final states inside the Frank-Condon region. Presentation of the Auger electron angular distributions as a function of kinetic energy release of two atomic ions opens a new dimension in the study of Auger decay.

Fragmentation of highly charged molecular ions or clusters consisting of more than two atoms can proceed in an onestep synchronous manner where all bonds break simultaneously or sequentially by emitting one ion after the other. We separated these decay channels for the fragmentation of CO23+ ions by measuring the momenta of the ionic fragments. We show that the total energy deposited in the molecular ion is a control parameter which switches between three distinct fragmentation pathways: the sequential fragmentation in which the emission of an O+ ion leaves a rotating CO2+ ion behind that fragments after a time delay, the Coulomb explosion and an in-between fragmentation - the asynchronous dissociation. These mechanisms are directly distinguishable in Dalitz plots and Newton diagrams of the fragment momenta. We used Cold Target Recoil Ion Momentum Spectroscopy (COLTRIMS) to investigate the decay of Ne$_2$ after K-shell photoionization. The breakup into Ne$^{1+}$ / Ne$^{2+}$ shows interatomic Coulombic decay (ICD) occurring after a preceding atomic Auger decay. The molecular frame angular distributions of the photoelectron and the ICD electron show distinct, asymmetric features, which imply localization of the K-vacancy created at one of the two atomic sites of the Ne$_2$ and an emission of the ICD electron from a localized site. The experimental results are supported by calculations in frozen core Hartree-Fock approach., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

Using the COLTRIMStechnique, scattering angle differential cross sections for single and double electron capture in collisions of protons and $He\sp{1,2+}$ projectiles with helium atoms for incident energies of $60-630 keV/u$ are measured. We also report new theoretical results obtained by means of four-body one-channel distorted wave models (CDW-BFS, CDW-BIS and BDW), and find mixed agreement with the measured data.

Time ordering may be defined by first defining the limit of no time ordering (NTO) in terms of a time average of an external interaction, V(t). Previously, time correlation was defined in terms of a similar limit called the independent time approximation (ITA). Experimental evidence for time correlation has not yet been distinguished from experimental evidence for time ordering.

We report about a nuclear track imaging system which is designed to study in detail the ionization topology of charged particle tracks in a low-pressure gas. The detection method is based on a time projection chamber (TPC) filled with low-pressure triethylamine (TEA). Ionization electrons produced by energetic charged particles are three-dimensionally imaged by recording light from electron avalanches with an intensified CCD system. The detector permits to inves-tigate the spatial ionization distributions of particle tracks in gas, of equivalent length and resolution in tissue of 4 mm and 40 nm (RMS), respectively. We explain the relevance of this technique for dosimetry, describe the experimental method and the basic operation parameters. First results of the chamber response to protons and alpha particles are presented.
