Abstract

International audience; Over these last years, new computerized methods have been proposed to build virtual endocasts based on 3D CT images of extant or fossil skulls. This allows analyzing large samples automatically and then obtaining significant statistical results about the shape of the endocast and its correlation relative to other anatomical structures. We assessed two new algorithms to segment and process virtual endocasts. The first tool allows delineating the boundary of the 3D endocranial surface without any manual interaction, even in presence of large holes (such as the foramen magnum). We compared these virtual endocasts with the corresponding plaster endocasts manually casted by one the authors. The second algorithm allows the automated measurement of 3D asymmetry on the virtual endocasts, and the computation of a mean 3D endocranial shape over several individuals on which the mean population asymmetry can be assessed. To show the potential of such automatic tools, we propose to study the relationship between the shape of the endocast and the external shape of the skull. For this purpose, we selected about twenty dry skulls in the Morton collection. These skulls were selected from populational samples which have been considered in the past to evince pronounced exo-cranial secondary-developing super-structures. These samples were CT-scanned and we automatically segmented both the external surface of the skull and the endocast. We present the first results of our analysis by focusing on the exocranial versus endocranial differences at the level of the neurocranium of each individual. We also compare asymmetry patterns between individuals.

Abstract

La lengua cumple una función fundamentalmente social. Los procesos de interacción humana, junto a los procesos cognitivos de dominio general, configuran la estructura y el conocimiento de la lengua. La investigación reciente ha demostrado, a través de diversas disciplinas de las ciencias cognitivas, que los patrones de uso afectan fuertemente al modo en que una lengua se adquiere, se estructura, se organiza en la cognición y cambia en un periodo determinado. Sin embargo, hay un número creciente de pruebas de que los procesos de adquisición, de uso y de cambio lingüísticos no son independientes entre sí, sino facetas de un mismo sistema. Proponemos que este sistema debe entenderse como un sistema adaptativo complejo (SAC). Un sistema así es radicalmente diferente del sistema estático de principios gramaticales, característico del bien conocido enfoque generativista. Antes bien, la lengua, como sistema adaptativo complejo de uso dinámico.

Abstract

Language has a fundamentally social function. Processes of human interaction along with domain-general cognitive processes shape the structure and knowledge of language. Recent research in the cognitive sciences has demonstrated that patterns of use strongly affect how language is acquired, is used, and changes. These processes are not independent of one another but are facets of the same complex adaptive system (CAS). Language as a CAS involves the following key features: The system consists of multiple agents (the speakers in the speech community) interacting with one another. The system is adaptive; that is, speakers’ behavior is based on their past interactions, and current and past interactions together feed forward into future behavior. A speaker's behavior is the consequence of competing factors ranging from perceptual constraints to social motivations. The structures of language emerge from interrelated patterns of experience, social interaction, and cognitive mechanisms. The CAS approach reveals commonalities in many areas of language research, including first and second language acquisition, historical linguistics, psycholinguistics, language evolution, and computational modeling.
