We present a measurement of the sky distribution of positronium (Ps) annihilation continuum emission obtained with the SPI spectrometer on board ESA's INTEGRAL observatory. The only sky region from which significant Ps continuum emission is detected is the Galactic bulge. The Ps continuum emission is circularly symmetric about the Galactic centre, with an extension of about 8 deg FWHM. Within measurement uncertainties, the sky distribution of the Ps continuum emission is consistent with that found by us for the 511 keV electron-positron annihilation line using SPI. Assuming that 511 keV line and Ps continuum emission follow the same spatial distribution, we derive a Ps fraction of 0.92 +/- 0.09. These results strengthen our conclusions regarding the origin of positrons in our Galaxy based on observations of the 511 keV line. In particular, they suggest that the main source of Galactic positrons is associated with an old stellar population, such as Type Ia supernovae, classical novae, or low-mass X-ray binaries. We performed a spectroscopic study of the 1809 keV gamma-ray line from 26Al decay in the Galaxy using the SPI imaging spectrometer with its high-resolution Ge detector camera on the INTEGRAL observatory. We analyzed observations of the first two mission years, fitting spectra from all 7130 telescope pointings in narrow energy bins to models of instrumental background and the 26Al sky. Instrumental background is estimated from independent tracers of cosmic-ray activation. The shape of the 26Al signal is compared to the instrumental response to extract the width of the celestial line. We detect the 26Al line at \~16sigma significance. The line is broadened only slightly, if at all; we constrain the width to be below 2.8 keV (FWHM, 2 sigma). The average Doppler velocities of 26Al at the time of its decay in the interstellar medium (decay time~1.04 My) therefore are probably around 100 km/s, in agreement with expectations from Galactic rotation and interstellar turbulence. The flux and spatial distribution of the emission are found consistent with previous observations. The diffuse continuum emission from the Galactic plane in the energy range 18-1000 keV has been studied using 16 Ms of data from the SPI instrument on INTEGRAL. With such an exposure we can exploit the imaging properties of SPI to achieve a good separation of point sources from the various diffuse components. Using a candidate-source catalogue derived with IBIS on INTEGRAL and a number of sky distribution models we obtained spectra resolved in Galactic longitude. We can identify spectral components of a diffuse continuum of power law shape with index about 1.7, a positron annihilation component with a continuum from positronium and the line at 511 keV, and a second, roughly power-law component from detected point sources. Our analysis confirms the concentration of positron annihilation emission in the inner region (|l|<10), the disk (10<|l|<30) being at least a factor 7 weaker in this emission. The power-law component in contrast drops by only a factor 2, showing a quite different longitude distribution and spatial origin. Detectable sources constitute about 90% of the total Galactic emission between 20 and 60 keV, but have a steeper spectrum than the diffuse emission, their contribution to the total emission dropping rapidly to a small fraction at higher energies. In the SPI energy range the flux is lower than found by OSSE, probably due to the more complete accounting for sources by SPI. The power-law emission is difficult to explain as of interstellar origin, inverse Compton giving at most 10%, and instead a population of unresolved point sources is proposed as a possible origin, AXPs with their spectra hardening above 100 keV being plausible candidates. We present a map of 511 keV electron-positron annihilation emission, based on data accumulated with the SPI spectrometer aboard ESA's INTEGRAL gamma-ray observatory, that covers approximately 95% of the celestial sphere. 511 keV line emission is significantly detected towards the galactic bulge region and, at a very low level, from the galactic disk. The bulge emission is highly symmetric and is centred on the galactic centre with an extension of 8 deg. The emission is equally well described by models that represent the stellar bulge or halo populations. The disk morphology is only weakly constrained by the present data, being compatible with both the distribution of young and old stellar populations. The 511 keV line flux from the bulge and disk components is 1.05e-3 ph cm-2 s-1 and 0.7e-3 ph cm-2 s-1, respectively, corresponding to a bulge-to-disk flux ratio in the range 1-3. Assuming a positronium fraction of 0.93 this translates into annihilation rates of 1.5e43 s-1 and 3e42 s-1, respectively. The ratio of the bulge luminosity to that of the disk is in the range 3-9. We find no evidence for a point-like source in addition to the diffuse emission, down to a typical flux limit of 1e-4 ph cm-2 s-1. We also find no evidence for the positive latitude enhancement that has been reported from OSSE measurements; our 3 sigma upper flux limit for this feature is 1.5e-4 ph cm-2 s-1. The disk emission can be attributed to the beta+ decay of the radioactive species 26Al and 44Ti. The bulge emission arises from a different source which has only a weak or no disk component. We suggest that Type Ia supernovae and/or low-mass X-ray binaries are the prime candidates for the source of the galactic bulge positrons. IGR J17464-3213, already known as the HEAO-1 transient source H1743-322, has been detected during a state transition by the SPI/INTEGRAL telescope. We describe the spectral evolution and flaring activity of IGR J17464-3213/H1743-322 from 2003 March 21 to 2003 April 22. During the first part, the source followed a continuous spectral softening, with the peak of the spectral energy distribution shifting from 100 keV down to a few keV. However the thermal disk and the hard X-ray components had a similar intensity, indicating that the source was in an intermediate state throughout our observations and evolving toward the soft state. In the second part of our observations, the ASM/RXTE and SPI/INTEGRAL light curve showed a strong flaring activity. Two flare events lasting about 1 day each have been detected with SPI and are probably due to instabilities in the accretion disk associated with the state transition. During these flares, the low (1.5-12 keV) and high (20-200 keV) energy fluxes monitored with ASM/RXTE and SPI/INTEGRAL, are correlated and the spectral shape (above 20 keV) remains unchanged while the luminosity increases by a factor greater than 2., Comment: 26 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journal

One of the scientific goals of the main instrument of GLAST is the study of Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) in the energy range from ~20 MeV to ~300 GeV. In order to extend the energy measurement towards lower energies a secondary instrument, the GLAST Burst Monitor (GBM), will measure GRBs from ~10 keV to ~25 MeV and will therefore allow the investigation of the relation between the keV and the MeV-GeV emission from GRBs over six energy decades. These unprecedented measurements will permit the exploration of the unknown aspects of the high-energy burst emission and the investigation of their connection with the well-studied low-energy emission. They will also provide ne insights into the physics of GRBs in general. The gamma-ray source GRO J0852-4642, discovered by COMPTEL, is a possible counterpart of the supernova remnant RX J0852-4622. Detection of radioactive decay from 44Ti nuclei would proof it to be the youngest and nearest supernova remnant known so far. During the first year of INTEGRAL core program, the Vela region was observed twice in all for more than 2000 ks. Among other nucleosynthesis studies, one of the most important scientific goals of this observation is the detection of 44Ti gamma-ray lines expected at 68 keV, 78 keV and 1157 keV. For this purpose the INTEGRAL Spectrometer (SPI), with its very high energy resolution thanks to its germanium detector camera is the key instrument, permitting a precise determination of gamma-ray line intensities and profiles. The upper limit for the 78.4 keV 44Ti gamma-ray line emission derived from the first analysis is 1.1 x 10^{-4} gamma/cm2s. This value is mainly dominated by systematic uncertainties in the treatment of the instrumental background. By accumulating more observation time in the next years of the mission and by improving the background understanding, a reliable 44Ti flux for GRO J0852-4642 or an upper limit which constrains the COMPTEL flux can be expected., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, 1 table. During its first year in orbit the INTEGRAL observatory performed deep exposures of the Galactic Center region and scanning observations of the Galactic plane. We report on the status of our analysis of the positron annihilation radiation from the 4th Galactic quadrant with the spectrometer SPI, focusing on the sky distribution of the 511 keV line emission. We present first results on the observation of 1809 keV gamma-ray line emission from the Cygnus X region with the SPI imaging spectrometer. Our analysis is based on data from the performance verification phase of the INTEGRAL instruments and comprises 1.3 Ms of exposure time. We observe a 1809 keV line flux of (7.3 +/- 0.9) x 10-5 ph cm-2 s-1 from a region delimited by galactic longitudes 73-93 deg and |b| < 7 deg at a significance level of 8 sigma. The 1809 keV line appears moderately broadened, with an intrinsic FWHM of 3.3 +/- 1.3 keV. Although this broadening is only marginal (at the 2 sigma level our data are compatible with an unbroadened line), it could reflect the 26Al ejecta kinematics., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in the proceedings of the 5th INTEGRAL workshop (held in Munich, 2004)

We investigated the MeV properties of 173 unidentified or only tentatively identified EGRET sources listed in the third EGRET catalogue, by analyzing the simultaneously collected COMPTEL MeV data for each individual source. The sources can generally be divided into 4 groups. In this paper we focus on one of these, a group of 22 EGRET sources for which we can provide additional constraining information: their spectral extrapolations from the energy range above 100 MeV towards lower energies overshoot the fluxes or upper limits derived simultaneously at MeV energies. This means that for these sources a spectral turnover/break between 1 MeV and 100 MeV is required. At least two of these sources, but most likely the majority of this sample, have the maxima of their gamma-ray luminosities in this energy band. The sources have rather soft EGRET spectra (average photon index: 2.72), and seem to spatially cluster in the inner Galaxy. Variability analyses revealed 11 out of the 22 sources to be significantly variable. Object classes proposed as possible counterparts for the unidentified EGRET sources are discussed in the light of these additional constraints., Comment: 9 pages including 4 figures; A&A accepted

Al(26) radioactivity traces recent nucleosynthesis throughout the Galaxy, and is known to be produced in massive stars and novae. The map from its decay gamma-ray line suggests massive stars to dominate, but high-resolution line spectroscopy is expected to supplement imaging of Al(26) source regions and thus to help decide about the Al(26) injection process and interstellar environment, hence about the specific massive-star subgroup and phase which produces interstellar Al(26). The INTEGRAL Spectrometer SPI has observed Galactic Al(26) radioactivity in its 1809 keV gamma-ray line during its first inner-Galaxy survey. Instrumental background lines make analysis difficult; yet, a clear signal from the inner Galaxy agrees with expectations. In particular, SPI has constrained the line width to exclude previously-reported line broadenings corresponding to velocities >500 km/s. The signal-to-background ratio of percent implies that detector response and background modeling need to be fine-tuned to eventually enable line shape deconvolution in order to extract source location information along the line of sight., Comment: 6 pages; Proc. 5th INTEGRAL workshop, Munich, Feb. 2004

INTEGRAL Spectrometer SPI data from the first year of the Galactic Centre Deep Exposure has been analysed for the diffuse continuum from the Galactic ridge. A new catalogue of sources from the INTEGRAL Imager IBIS has been used to account for their contribution to the celestial signal. Apparently diffuse emission is detected at a level ~10% of the total source flux. A comparison of the spectrum of diffuse emission with that from an analysis of IBIS data alone shows that they are consistent. The SPI instrument has been launched on-board the INTEGRAL observatory on October 17, 2002. SPI is a spectrometer devoted to the sky observation in the 20 keV-8 MeV energy range using 19 germanium detectors. The performance of the cryogenic system is nominal and allows to cool the 19 kg of germanium down to 85 K with a comfortable margin. The energy resolution of the whole camera is 2.5 keV at 1.1 MeV. This resolution degrades with time due to particle irradiation in space. We show that the annealing process allows the recovery of the initial performance. The anticoincidence shield works as expected, with a low threshold at 75 keV, reducing the GeD background by a factor of 20. The digital front-end electronics system allows the perfect alignement in time of all the signals as well as the optimisation of the dead time (12%). We demonstrate that SPI is able to map regions as complex as the galactic plane. The obtained spectrum of the Crab nebula validates the present version of our response matrix. The 3 $\sigma$ sensitivity of the instrument at 1 MeV is 8 10$^{-7}$ph$\cdot$cm$^{-2}\cdot$s$^{-1}\cdot$keV$^{-1}$ for the continuum and 3 10$^{-5}$ph$\cdot$cm$^{-2}\cdot$s$^{-1}$ for narrow lines., Comment: 10 pages, 18 figures, accepted for publication in A&A (special INTEGRAL volume)

SPI, the Spectrometer on board the ESA INTEGRAL satellite, to be launched in October 2002, will study the gamma-ray sky in the 20 keV to 8 MeV energy band with a spectral resolution of 2 keV for photons of 1 MeV, thanks to its 19 germanium detectors spanning an active area of 500 cm2. A coded mask imaging technique provides a 2 deg angular resolution. The 16 deg field of view is defined by an active BGO veto shield, furthermore used for background rejection. In April 2001 the flight model of SPI underwent a one-month calibration campaign at CEA in Bruy\`eres le Ch\^atel using low intensity radioactive sources and the CEA accelerator for homogeneity measurements and high intensity radioactive sources for imaging performance measurements. After integration of all scientific payloads (the spectrometer SPI, the imager IBIS and the monitors JEM-X and OMC) on the INTEGRAL satellite, a cross-calibration campaign has been performed at the ESA center in Noordwijk. A set of sources has been placed in the field of view of the different instruments in order to compare their performances and determine their mutual influence. Some of those sources had already been used in Bruy\`eres during the SPI standalone test. For the lowest energy band calibration an X-ray generator has been used. We present the analysis of the first observations of the Cygnus region by the SPI spectrometer onboard the Integral Gamma Ray Observatory, encompassing ${\sim}$ 600 ks of data. Three sources namely Cyg X-1, Cyg X-3 and EXO 2030+375 were clearly detected. Our data illustrate the temporal variability of Cyg X-1 in the energy range from 20 keV to 300 keV. The spectral analysis shows a remarkable stability of the Cyg X-1 spectra when averaged over one day timescale. The other goal of these observations is SPI inflight calibration and performance verification. We report the first measurements of the 511 keV line emission from the Galactic Centre (GC) region performed with the spectrometer SPI on the space observatory INTEGRAL (International Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory). Taking into account the range of spatial distribution models which are consistent with the data, we derive a flux of $9.9^{+4.7}_{-2.1} \times 10^{-4}$ ph cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ and an intrinsic line width of $2.95^{+0.45}_{-0.51}$ keV (FWHM). The results are consistent with other high-spectroscopy measurements, though the width is found to be at the upper bound of previously reported values., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

We present first results from contemporaneous observations of Cygnus X-1 with INTEGRAL and RXTE, made during INTEGRAL's performance verification phase in 2002 November and December. Consistent with earlier results, the 3-250 keV data are well described by Comptonization spectra from a Compton corona with a temperature of kT~50-90 keV and an optical depth of tau~1.0-1.3 plus reflection from a cold or mildly ionized slab with a covering factor of Omega/2pi~0.2-0.3. A soft excess below 10 keV, interpreted as emission from the accretion disk, is seen to decrease during the 1.5 months spanned by our observations. Our results indicate a remarkable consistency among the independently calibrated detectors, with the remaining issues being mainly related to the flux calibration of INTEGRAL., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures. The precision measurement of the 1809 keV gamma-ray line from Galactic $^{26}$Al is one of the goals of the SPI spectrometer on INTEGRAL with its Ge detector camera. We aim for determination of the detailed shape of this gamma-ray line, and its variation for different source regions along the plane of the Galaxy. Data from the first part of the core program observations of the first mission year have been inspected. A clear detection of the \Al line at about 5--7 $\sigma$ significance demonstrates that SPI will deepen \Al studies. The line intensity is consistent with expectations from previous experiments, and the line appears narrower than the 5.4 keV FWHM reported by GRIS, more consistent with RHESSI's recent value. Only preliminary statements can be made at this time, however, due to the multi-component background underlying the signal at \about 40 times higher intensity than the signal from Galactic $^{26}$Al., Comment: 5 pages, 8 figures; accepted for publication in A&A (special INTEGRAL volume)

Three calibration campaigns of the spectrometer SPI have been performed before launch in order to determine the instrument characteristics, such as the effective detection area, the spectral resolution and the angular resolution. Absolute determination of the effective area has been obtained from simulations and measurements. At 1 MeV, the effective area is 65 cm^2 for a point source on the optical axis, the spectral resolution ~2.3 keV. The angular resolution is better than 2.5 deg and the source separation capability about 1 deg. The spectrometer SPI, one of the two main instruments of the INTEGRAL spacecraft, offers significant gamma-ray burst detection capabilities. In its 35 deg (full width) field of view SPI is able to localise gamma-ray bursts at a mean rate of ~ 0.8/month. With its large anticoincidence shield of 512 kg of BGO crystals SPI is able to detect gamma-ray bursts quasi omni-directionally with a very high sensitivity. Burst alerts of the anticoincidence shield are distributed by the INTEGRAL Burst Alert System. In the first 8 months of the mission about 0.8/day gamma-ray burst candidates and 0.3/day gamma-ray burst positions were obtained with the anticoincidence shield by interplanetary network triangulations with other spacecrafts., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures. Scans of the Galactic plane performed at regular intervals constitute a key element of the guaranteed time observations of the INTEGRAL observing programme. These scans are done for two reasons: frequent monitoring of the Galactic plane in order to detect transient sources, and time resolved mapping of the Galactic plane in continuum and diffuse line emission. This paper describes first results obtained from the Galactic plane scans executed so far during the early phase (Dec 2002 - May 2003) of the nominal mission., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, Latex. We present INTEGRAL and XMM-Newton observations of the prompt gamma-ray emission and the X-ray afterglow of GRB030227, the first GRB for which the quick localization obtained with the INTEGRAL Burst Alert System (IBAS) has led to the discovery of X-ray and optical afterglows. GRB030227 had a duration of about 20 s and a peak flux of 1.1 photons cm^-2 s^-1 in the 20-200 keV energy range. The time averaged spectrum can be fit by a single power law with photon index about 2 and we find some evidence for a hard to soft spectral evolution. The X-ray afterglow has been detected starting only 8 hours after the prompt emission, with a 0.2-10 keV flux decreasing as t^-1 from 1.3x10e-12 to 5x10e-13 erg cm^-2 s^-1. The afterglow spectrum is well described by a power law with photon index 1.94+/-0.05 modified by a redshifted neutral absorber with column density of several 10e22 cm^-2. A possible emission line at 1.67 keV could be due to Fe for a redshift z=3, consistent with the value inferred from the absorption., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures, latex, Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letters

Supernova 1998bu in the galaxy M96 was observed by COMPTEL for a total of 88 days starting 17 days after the explosion. We searched for a signal in the 847 keV and 1238 keV lines of radioactive 56Co from this type Ia supernova. Using several different analysis methods, we did not detect SN1998bu. Our measurements should have been sensitive enough to detect 60Co gamma-rays as predicted from supernova models. Our 2-sigma flux limit is 2.3 10^{-5} photons cm^{-2} s^{-1}; this would correspond to 0.35 solar mass of ejected 56Ni, if SN1998bu were at a distance of 11.3 Mpc and transparent to MeV gamma rays for the period of our measurements. We discuss our measurements in the context of common supernova models, and conclude disfavoring a supernova event with large mixing and major parts of the freshly-generated radioactivity in outer layers., Comment: 8 pages, 6 EPS-figures, Latex2e, aa.cls needed, accepted for publication in A&A

We have used observations of Cygnus X-1 from the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory (CGRO) and BeppoSAX to study the variation in the MeV gamma-ray emission between the hard and soft spectral states, using spectra that cover the energy range 20 keV up to 10 MeV. These data provide evidence for significant spectral variability at energies above 1 MeV. In particular, whereas the hard X-ray flux decreases during the soft state, the flux at energies above 1 MeV increases, resulting in a significantly harder gamma-ray spectrum at energies above 1 MeV. This behavior is consistent with the general picture of galactic black hole candidates having two distinct spectral forms at soft gamma-ray energies. These data extend this picture, for the first time, to energies above 1 MeV. We have used two different hybrid thermal/non-thermal Comptonization models to fit broad band spectral data obtained in both the hard and soft spectral states. These fits provide a quantitative estimate of the electron distribution and allow us to probe the physical changes that take place during transitions between the low and high X-ray states. We find that there is a significant increase (by a factor of ~4) in the bolometric luminosity as the source moves from the hard state to the soft state. Furthermore, the presence of a non-thermal tail in the Comptonizing electron distribution provides significant constraints on the magnetic field in the source region., Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ. We investigate the origin of the nonthermal X-ray emission from the Galactic ridge in the range 10-200 keV. We consider bremsstrahlung of subrelativistic cosmic ray protons and electrons as production processes. From the solution of the kinetic equations describing the processes of particle in-situ acceleration and spatial propagation we derive parameters of the spectra for protons and electrons. For in-situ acceleration the flux of accelerated particles consists mainly of protons since the ratio of the accelerated protons to electrons is large and the flux of nuclei with charges Z>1 is strongly suppressed. Our analysis has shown that the proton bremsstrahlung model is free from the previously discussed problems of the high gamma-ray flux at MeV or at hundreds of MeV energy regions. However, the model with proton bremsstrahlung requires specific restrictions on the proton spectrum.The real problem of the proton bremsstrahlung model is the large pressure of the accelerated protons in the disk. For the electron origin of the ridge flux we do not have the problems of the gamma-ray line and continuous fluxes. The goal of the Medium Energy Gamma-ray Astronomy (MEGA) telescope is to improve sensitivity at medium gamma-ray energies (0.4-50 MeV) by at least an order of magnitude over that of COMPTEL. This will be achieved with a new compact design that allows for a very wide field of view, permitting a sensitive all-sky survey and the monitoring of transient and variable sources. The key science objectives for MEGA include the investigation of cosmic high-energy particle accelerators, studies of nucleosynthesis sites using gamma-ray lines, and determination of the large-scale structure of galactic and cosmic diffuse background emission. MEGA records and images gamma-ray events by completely tracking both Compton and pair creation interactions in a tracker of double-sided silicon strip detectors and a calorimeter of CsI crystals able to resolve in three dimensions. The selection of the GLAST burst monitor (GBM) by NASA will allow the investigation of the relation between the keV and the MeV-GeV emission from gamma-ray bursts. The GBM consists of 12 NaI and 2 BGO crystals allowing a continuous measurement of the energy spectra of gamma-ray bursts from ~5 keV to \~30 MeV. One feature of the GBM is its high time resolution for time-resolved gamma-ray spectroscopy. Moreover the arrangement of the NaI crystals allows a rapid on-board location (<15 degrees) of a gamma-ray burst within a FoV of ~8.6 sr. This position will be communicated to the main instrument of GLAST making follow-up observations at high energies possible., Comment: 4 pages with 2 figures

We have analyzed the two blazars of 3C 454.3 and CTA 102 using all available COMPTEL data from 1991 to 1999. In the 10-30 MeV band, emission from the general direction of the sources is found at the 4$\sigma$-level, being consistent with contributions from both sources. Below 10 MeV only 3C 454.3 is significantly detected, with the strongest evidence (5.6 $\sigma$) in the 3-10 MeV band. Significant flux variability is not observed for both sources, while a low emission is seen most of the years in the 3-10 MeV light curve for 3C 454.3. We have used observations from CGRO to study the variation in the MeV emission of Cygnus X-1 between its low and high X-ray states. These data provide a measurement of the spectral variability above 1 MeV. The high state MeV spectrum is found to be much harder than that of the low state MeV spectrum. In particular, the power-law emission seen at hard X-ray energies in the high state spectrum (with a photon spectral index of 2.6) is found to extend out to at least 5 MeV, with no evidence for any cutoff. We present the latest update of the 1.809 MeV sky survey obtained with COMPTEL. Based on all observations taken since the launch of CGRO in spring 1991 to early summer this year we obtain 1.809 MeV all sky maps using different imaging methods. The background is modelled on the basis of an adjacent energy approach. We confirm the previously reported characteristics of the galactic 1.809 MeV emission, specifically excesses in regions away from the inner Galaxy. The observed 1.8 MeV gamma-ray line is ascribed to the radioactive decay of 26Al in the interstellar medium. 26Al has been found to be predominantly synthesised in massive stars and their subsequent core-collapse supernovae, which is confirmed in tracer comparisons. The type Ia supernova SN1998bu in M96 was observed by COMPTEL for a total of 88 days starting 17 days after the first detection of the supernova. The accumulated effective observation time was 4.14 Msec. The COMPTEL observations were performed in a special instrument mode improving the low-energy sensitivity. We generated images in the 847 keV and 1238 keV lines of 56Co, using improved point spread functions for the low-energy mode. We do not detect SN1998bu. A spectral analysis of our data also confirms the non-detection of the supernova. The instrumental line background of the Compton telescope COMPTEL onboard the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory is due to the activation and/or decay of many isotopes. The major components of this background can be attributed to eight individual isotopes, namely 2D, 22Na, 24Na, 28Al, 40K, 52Mn, 57Ni, and 208Tl. The identification of instrumental lines with specific isotopes is based on the line energies as well as on the variation of the event rate with time, cosmic-ray intensity, and deposited radiation dose during passages through the South-Atlantic Anomaly. The characteristic variation of the event rate due to a specific isotope depends on its life-time, orbital parameters such as the altitude of the satellite above Earth, and the solar cycle. A detailed understanding of the background contributions from instrumental lines is crucial at MeV energies for measuring the cosmic diffuse gamma-ray background and for observing gamma-ray line emission in the interstellar medium or from supernovae and their remnants. Procedures to determine the event rate from each background isotope are described, and their average activity in spacecraft materials over the first seven years of the mission is estimated., Comment: accepted for publication in A&A, 22 pages, 21 figures

We report first observational results of multifrequency campaigns on the prominent Virgo blazars 3C 273 and 3C 279 which were carried out in January and February 1999. Both blazars are detected from radio to gamma-ray energies. The imaging Compton telescope COMPTEL aboard NASA's Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory has opened the MeV gamma-ray band as a new window to astronomy. COMPTEL provided the first complete all-sky survey in the energy range 0.75 to 30 MeV. The catalogue, presented here, is largely restricted to published results. It contains firm as well as marginal detections of continuum and line emitting sources and presents upper limits for various types of objects. The numbers of the most significant detections are 32 for steady sources and 31 for gamma-ray bursters. Among the continuum sources, detected so far, are spin-down pulsars, stellar black-hole candidates, supernova remnants, interstellar clouds, nuclei of active galaxies, gamma-ray bursters, and the Sun during solar flares. Line detections have been made in the light of the 1.809 MeV 26Al line, the 1.157 MeV 44Ti line, the 847 and 1238 keV 56Co lines, and the neutron capture line at 2.223 MeV. For the identification of galactic sources, a modelling of the diffuse galactic emission is essential. Such a modelling at this time does not yet exist at the required degree of accuracy. Therefore, a second COMPTEL source catalogue will be produced after a detailed and accurate modelling of the diffuse interstellar emission has become possible., Comment: 50 pages including 4 figures; accepted for publication in A&A Supplements

The Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory (CGRO) has observed the Cygnus region on several occasions since its launch in 1991. The data collected by the COMPTEL experiment on CGRO represent the most sensitive observations to date of Cygnus X-1 in the 0.75-30 MeV range. A spectrum accumulated by COMPTEL over 10 weeks of observation time shows significant evidence for emission extending out to several MeV. We have combined these data with contemporaneous data from both BATSE and OSSE to produce a broad-band gamma-ray spectrum, corresponding to the low X-ray state of Cygnus X-1, extending from 50 keV up to approximately 5 MeV. Although there is no evidence for any broad line-like emissions in the MeV region, these data further confirm the presence of a hard tail at energies above several hundred keV. In particular, the spectrum at MeV energies can be described as a power-law with a photon spectral index of $\alpha$ = -3.2, with no evidence for a cutoff at high energies. For the 200 keV to 5 MeV spectrum, we provide a quantitative description of the underlying electron spectrum, in the context of a hybrid thermal/non-thermal model for the emission. The electron spectrum can be described by a thermal Maxwellian with a temperature of $kT_e$ = 86 keV and a non-thermal power-law component with a spectral index of $p_e$ = 4.5. In previous work, we have used data from the first three years of the CGRO mission to assemble a broad-band $\gamma$-ray spectrum of the galactic black hole candidate Cygnus X-1. Contemporaneous data from the COMPTEL, OSSE and BATSE experiments on CGRO were selected on the basis of the hard X-ray flux (45--140 keV) as measured by BATSE. This provided a spectrum of Cygnus X-1 in its canonical low X-ray state (as measured at energies below 10 keV), covering the energy range from 50 keV to 5 MeV. Here we report on a comparison of this spectrum to a COMPTEL-OSSE spectrum collected during a high X-ray state of Cygnus X-1 (May, 1996). These data provide evidence for significant spectral variability at energies above 1 MeV. In particular, whereas the hard X-ray flux {\it decreases} during the high X-ray state, the flux at energies above 1 MeV {\it increases}, resulting in a significantly harder high energy spectrum. This behavior is consistent with the general picture of galactic black hole candidates having two distinct spectral forms at soft $\gamma$-ray energies. The Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory (CGRO) experiments EGRET and COMPTEL observed the Virgo sky region continuously for 7 weeks between December 10, 1996 and January 28, 1997. The prominent quasar 3C~273 was found to be the brightest source in gamma-rays and was significantly detected by EGRET and COMPTEL. The EGRET experiment observed a time-variable flux at energies above 100 MeV, which reached in a 2-week flaring period (December 30, 1996 to January 14, 1997) its highest flux level observed during the CGRO-era. COMPTEL, however, does not observe obvious time variability at energies below ~30 MeV contemporaneous to EGRET. In particular, no flare was observed, indicating that this outburst is solely a high-energy (>100 MeV) phenomenon. The energy spectrum between 3 MeV and 10 GeV is well represented by a simple power-law model. Below 3 MeV a spectral turnover is indicated. Performing spectral analysis for different time periods, we found evidence for a spectral hardening during the flaring period, which is consistent with the flare occurring mainly at the higher energies and with its absence at COMPTEL energies of a few MeV. This may be interpreted as an indication that the emission in the EGRET energy range is dominated by a different radiation mechanism than the MeV emission. We argue that the most likely mechanism for the high-energy flare is inverse-Compton scattering of reprocessed accretion-disk radiation., Comment: 9 pages including 7 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We use all COMPTEL data from the beginning of the CGRO mission (April '91) up to the end of CGRO Cycle 6 (November '97) to carry out all-sky point source analyses in the four standard COMPTEL energy bands for different time periods. We apply our standard maximum-likelihood method to generate all-sky significance and flux maps for point sources by subtracting off the diffuse emission components via model fitting. In addition, fluxes of known sources have been determined for individual CGRO Phases/Cycles to generate lightcurves with a time resolution of the order of one year. The COMPTEL experiment aboard the COMPTON Gamma-Ray Observatory (CGRO) has observed the prominent TeV-blazars Mkn 421 and Mkn 501 many times between the start of its mission in April '91 and December '98. This paper reports first COMPTEL results from mainly time-averaged (CGRO Cycles) data. No evidence for both sources is found up to the end Cycle VI. However, the sum of all 10-30 MeV Cycle VII data shows a weak (3.2 sigma detection) MeV-source being positionally consistent with Mkn 421. During Cycle VII Mkn 421 was rather active at TeV-energies. Due to the lack of other known Gamma-ray sources in this sky region, we consider Mkn 421 as the most likely counterpart for this Gamma-ray emission. The Wolf-Rayet binary system gamma^2 Vel (WR 11} is the closest known Wolf-Rayet (WR) star. Recently, its distance has been redetermined by parallax measurements with the HIPPARCOS astrometric satellite yielding 258^{+41}_{-31} pc, significantly lower than previous estimates (300 -- 450 pc). Wolf-Rayet stars have been proposed as a major source of the Galactic 26Al observed at 1.809 MeV. The gamma-ray telescope COMPTEL has previously reported 1.8 MeV emission from the Vela region, yet located closer to the Galactic plane than the position of gamma^2 Vel. We derive an upper 1.8 MeV flux limit of 1.1 10^{-5} ph cm^{-2} s^{-1} (2 \sigma) for the WR star. With the new distance estimate, COMPTEL measurements place a limit of (6.3^{+2.1}_{-1.4}) 10^{-5} M_\odot the 26Al yield of gamma^2 Vel, thus constrains theories of nucleosynthesis in Wolf-Rayet stars. We discuss the implications in the context of the binary nature of gamma^2 Vel and present a new interpretation of the IRAS Vela shell., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, A&A in press

We report on the first firm detection of pulsed gamma-ray emission from PSR B1509-58 in the 0.75-30 MeV energy range in CGRO COMPTEL data collected over more than 6 years. The modulation significance in the 0.75-30 MeV pulse-phase distribution is 5.4 sigma and the lightcurve is similar to the lightcurves found earlier between 0.7 and 700 keV: a single broad asymmetric pulse reaching its maximum 0.38 +/- 0.03 in phase after the radio peak, compared to the offset of 0.30 found in the CGRO BATSE soft gamma-ray data, and 0.27 +/- 0.01 for RXTE (2-16 keV), compatible with ASCA (0.7-2.2 keV). Spectral analysis based on the excess counts in the broad pulse of the lightcurve shows that extrapolation of the OSSE power-law spectral fit with index -1.68 describes our data well up to 10 MeV. Above 10 MeV the spectrum breaks abruptly. The precise location of the break/bend between 10 and 30 MeV depends on the interpretation of the structure in the lightcurve measured by COMPTEL and EGRET above 10 MeV., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

We report the COMPTEL detection of pulsed $\gamma$-emission from PSR B1509-58 up to at least 10 MeV using data collected over more than 6 years. The 0.75-10 MeV lightcurve is broad and reaches its maximum near radio-phase 0.38, slightly beyond the maximum found at hard X-rays/ soft $\gamma$-rays. In the 10-30 MeV energy range a strong source is present in the skymap positionally consistent with the pulsar, but we do not detect significant pulsed emission. However, the lightcurve is consistent with the pulse shape changing from a single broad pulse into a double-peak morphology. Large-scale skymapping with COMPTEL using the full survey database presents challenging problems on account of the complex response and time-variable background. A new approach which attempts to address some of these problems is described, in which the information about each observation is preserved throughout the analysis. In this method, a maximum-entropy algorithm is used to determine image and background simultaneously. Because of the extreme computing requirements, the method has been implemented on a parallel computer, which brings large gains since the response computation is fully parallelizable. We use recent data obtained by three (OSSE, BATSE, and COMPTEL) of four instruments on board the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory, to construct a model of Cyg X-1 which describes its emission in a broad energy range from soft X-rays to MeV gamma-rays self-consistently. The gamma-ray emission is interpreted to be the result of Comptonization, bremsstrahlung, and positron annihilation in a hot optically thin and spatially extended region surrounding the whole accretion disk. For the X-ray emission a standard corona-disk model is applied. We show that the Cyg X-1 spectrum accumulated by the CGRO instruments during a ~4 year time period between 1991 and 1995, as well as the HEAO-3 gamma1 and gamma2 spectra can be well represented by our model. The COMPTEL experiment aboard the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory (CGRO) has observed the gamma-ray blazar 3C 279 several times between April 1991 and September 1995. This paper reports on a consistent analysis of these observations using the most recent COMPTEL data analysis tools. Detections and non-detections of 3C 279 along the CGRO-mission indicate a time-variable MeV-flux. Spectral variability is indicated as well, however can not be significantly proven by spectral fitting. The average MeV-spectrum of 3C 279, as measured by COMPTEL over the four-year period, is consistent with a photon power-law slope of about -1.9. This spectrum smoothly connects to the simultaneous 30 MeV to 10 GeV spectrum obtained from an analysis of the combined EGRET observations. The COMPTEL observations of the blazar-type quasar PKS 0528+134 in the energy range 0.75 MeV to 30 MeV carried out between April 1991 and September 1994 have been analyzed. During the first two years PKS 0528+134 was most significantly detected at energies above 3 MeV. During the last year there is only evidence for the quasar at energies below 3 MeV indicating a spectral change. The time-averaged COMPTEL energy spectrum between 0.75 MeV and 30 MeV is well represented by a power-law shape. Spectra collected from different observational periods reveal different power-law shapes: a hard state during flaring observations reported by EGRET, and a soft state otherwise. The combined simultaneous EGRET and COMPTEL spectra indicate these two spectral states as well. During low intensisty gamma-ray phases no spectral break is obvious from the combined COMPTEL and EGRET measurements. For the gamma-ray flaring phases however, the combined COMPTEL and EGRET data require a spectral bending at MeV-energies. By fitting broken power-law functions the best-fit values for the break in photon index range between 0.6 and 1.7, and for the break energy between ~5 MeV and ~20 MeV. Because the flux values measured by COMPTEL below 3 MeV in both states are roughly equal, the observations would be consistent with an additional spectral component showing up during gamma-ray flaring phases of PKS 0528+134. Such a component could be introduced by e.g. a high-energy electron-positron population with a low-energy cutoff in their bulk Lorentz factor distribution. The multiwavelength spectrum of PKS 0528+134 for gamma-ray flaring phases shows that the major energy release across the entire electro-magnetic spectrum is measured at MeV-energies., Comment: 10 pages, 8 postscript figures, latex, to appear in: A&A 328, 33 (1997)

The EGRET experiment aboard the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory (CGRO) has observed at energies above 100 MeV strong gamma-ray flares with short-term time variability from the gamma-ray blazars 3C 279 and PKS 1622-297. During these flaring periods both blazars have been detected by the COMPTEL experiment aboard CGRO at photon energies of about 10 MeV, revealing simultaneous gamma-ray activity down to these energies. For both cases the derived fluxes exceed those measured in previous observations, and 3C 279 shows an indication for time variability within the observational period. Both sources show evidence for `hard' MeV spectra. We construct a model of Cyg X-1 which describes self-consistently its emission from soft X-rays to MeV gamma rays. Instead of a compact pair-dominated gamma-ray emitting region, we consider a hot optically thin and spatially extended proton-dominated cloud surrounding the whole accretion disc. The gamma-ray emission is due to the bremsstrahlung, Comptonization, and positron annihilation, while the corona-disc model is retained for the X-ray emission. We show that the Cyg X-1 spectrum accumulated by OSSE, BATSE, and COMPTEL in 1991--95, as well as the HEAO-3 gamma1 and gamma2 spectra can be well fitted by our model. The derived parameters are in qualitative agreement with the picture in which the spectral changes are governed by the mass flow rate in the accretion disc.
