Search

Hypervelocity stars (HVSs) unbound to the Galaxy can be formed with extreme stellar interactions. Observational evidence comes from measurements of radial velocities (RVs) of objects crossing the Galactic halo and of tangential velocities based on high proper motions (HPMs) and distances of relatively nearby stars. I searched for new HVS candidates and reviewed known objects using their Gaia astrometric measurements. Candidates were selected with significant Gaia parallaxes of >0.1mas, proper motions of >20mas/yr, and computed Galactocentric tangential velocities $vtan\_g$>500km/s. The DR2 and DR3 samples of several thousand HVS candidates were studied with respect to their proper motions, sky distribution, number of observations, location in crowded fields, colour-magnitude diagrams, selection effects with magnitude, and RVs in DR3. The most extreme ($vtan\_g$>700km/s) and nearest (within 4kpc) 72 DR3 HVS candidates were investigated with respect to detected close neighbours, flags and astrometric quality parameters of objects of similar magnitudes in DR3. The quality checks involved HPM objects in a global comparison and all objects in the vicinity of each target. Spurious HPMs in the Galactic centre region led to false HVS interpretations in Gaia DR2 and are still present in DR3, although to a lesser extent. Otherwise there is good agreement between the HPMs of HVS candidates in DR2 and DR3. However, HVS candidates selected from DR2 tend to have larger parallaxes hence lower tangential velocities in DR3. Most DR3 RVs are much lower than the tangential velocities, indicating that the DR3 HVS candidates are still affected by underestimated parallaxes. None of the 72 extreme nearby DR3 HVS candidates, including three D$^6$ stars, passed all quality checks. Their tangential velocities may turn out to be smaller, but at least some of them still appear unbound to the Galaxy. The Gaia catalogue of nearby stars (GCNS) divided all objects with parallaxes $>$10mas into GCNS-selected and GCNS-rejected 100pc samples. Below the white dwarf (WD) sequence in the complete GCNS color-magnitude diagram (CMD), at $Gabs>14.7+4.7(G-RP)$, there appear 60 GCNS-selected faint blue white dwarfs (FBWDs). However this CMD region is also populated by 411 GCNS-rejected objects, mainly from crowded regions towards the Galactic centre and the Magellanic Clouds. The WD catalog of Gentile Fusillo et al. (2021) lists only 47 GCNS-selected but also 8 GCNS-rejected objects. I confirm 59 of the GCNS-selected but none of the GCNS-rejected objects as FBWDs from visual inspection and a proper motion check using additional optical sky surveys. Hence FBWDs form an additional branch in the CMD. Compared to the full GCNS-selected 100pc sample, FBWDs have relatively high proper motions and tangential velocities. There are 88 stars which lack colours, but have measured parallaxes in \textit{Gaia} EDR3 that place them within 20\,pc from the sun. Among them we found two new common parallax and proper motion (CPPM) companions separated from their primaries by about 3\,arcsec. The CPPM companion of a nearby ($d=14.98$\,pc) F1 star, \object{HD 105452 B}, was already imaged with the \textit{Hubble Space Telescope} and is now confirmed with \textit{Gaia} data and photometrically classified by us as M4 dwarf. The other CPPM companion, \object{SCR J1214-2345 B} orbiting an M4.5 dwarf at $d=10.77$\,pc, represents the faintest brown dwarf discovery made by \textit{Gaia} so far. It was also imaged by the VISTA Hemisphere Survey and partly detected in the near-infrared. The Gaia data release 2 (DR2) contains $>$6000 objects with parallaxes $(Plx+3\times{e\_Plx})>50$mas placing them within 20pc from the Sun. Since the expected numbers extrapolating the well-known 10pc census are much lower, nearby Gaia stars need a quality assessment. The 20pc sample of white dwarfs (WDs) had already been verified and completed with Gaia DR2. We aimed to check and complete the 20pc sample of ultracool dwarfs (UCDs) with spectral types $\gtrsim$M7 and given Gaia DR2 parallaxes. Dividing the Gaia DR2 20pc sample into subsamples of various astrometric and photometric quality, we studied their distribution on the sky, in the $M_G$ vs. $G$$-$$RP$ colour-magnitude diagram (CMD), and as a function of $G$ magnitude and total proper motion. After excluding 139 known WDs and 263 known UCDs from the CMD, we checked all remaining $\approx$3500 candidates with $M_G>14$mag (used to define UCDs in this study) for the correctness of their Gaia DR2 proper motions. For confirmed UCD candidates we estimated spectral types photometrically using Gaia and near-infrared absolute magnitudes and colours. We failed to confirm new WDs, but found 50 new UCD candidates not mentioned in three previous studies using Gaia DR2. They have relatively small proper motions and tangential velocities and are concentrated towards the Galactic plane. Half of them have spectral types in SIMBAD and/or previous non-Gaia distance estimates that placed them already within 20pc. For 20 of the 50 objects, we estimated photometric spectral types of M6-M6.5, slightly below the classical UCD spectral type limit. However, seven L4.5-L6.5, four L0-L1, five M8.5-M9.5, and three M7-M8 dwarfs can be considered as completely new UCDs discoveries within 20pc based on Gaia DR2. Four M6.5 and two L4.5 dwarfs have high membership probabilities (64%-99%) in the ARGUS, AB Doradus, or Carina Near young moving groups. We report the discovery of VMC J021140.41-735320.4, a faint ($J=19.9$ mag) and extremely red ($J-K_s=3.0$ mag, $W1-W2=0.45$ mag, $J-W2=4.7$ mag) high proper motion object in front of the Magellanic Bridge region. It is even redder in the near-infrared than the reddest L7 dwarfs ($J-K_s \gtrsim 2.8$ mag) found in the survey of Schneider et al. (2017) and its colours do also not match exactly those of other peculiar red L7.5 dwarfs. Therefore, we consider its photometric distance estimate of about 73 pc as uncertain. A preliminary combined proper motion and parallax solution involving 20 epochs from the Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA) survey of the Magellanic Clouds (VMC), the VISTA hemisphere survey (VHS), and the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) yields $\mu_{\alpha}\cos{\delta}=+74.3\pm3.4$ mas/yr, $\mu_{\delta}=+22.3\pm3.4$ mas/yr, and $\pi=21.0\pm7.1$ mas. Applying the BANYAN tool (http://www.exoplanetes.umontreal.ca/banyan/) to these results we find a $\approx$68% membership probability of this object in the AB Doradus young moving group (YMG). With its trignometric distance of $\approx$48 pc, VMC J021140.41-735320.4 has a similar absolute magnitude of $M_{K_s}\approx13.4$ mag as the planetary mass companion of another AB Doradus YMG member candidate, 2MASS J22362452+4751425. Among about 1.8 million Gaia DR2 high proper motion stars with $\mu>60$ mas/yr and moderately significant parallaxes ($\varpi>3\sigma_{\varpi}$), we have selected 109 high-speed star candidates with Galactic rest frame tangential velocities (corrected for solar motion) $v_{t,g}$$>$700 km/s, well above the local Galactic escape velocity. After applying various Gaia DR2 astrometric quality criteria, only 39 candidates remained, including all three hypervelocity runaway white dwarfs (HVR WDs) found by Shen et al. (2018) but no additional such candidates (falling in the same region of the colour-magnitude diagram). Considering only candidates with highly significant parallaxes ($\varpi>5\sigma_{\varpi}$) as reliable extreme tangential velocity candidates (cf. Bromley et al. 2018), our final list consists of six objects with parallaxes of 0.17 mas $\lesssim \varpi \lesssim$ 1.05 mas and tangential velocities of 730 km/s $\lesssim v_{t,g} \lesssim$ 1600 km/s, including two candidates of Bromley et al. (2018). Only one of the three HVR WDs of Shen et al. (2018), D6-2 (= NLTT 51732), falls in that list but can be considered a doubtful high-speed candidate because of its relatively large astrometric quality parameters. One of the three new extreme velocity candidates in our list, Gaia DR2 6097052289696317952, is relatively bright ($G\approx$13.5 mag) and blue $BP$$-$$RP$$\approx$0.6 mag and has the smallest parallax and highest tangential velocity. We present three new nearby L dwarf candidates, found in a continued combined color/proper motion search using WISE, 2MASS, and other survey data, where we included extended WISE sources and looked closer to the Galactic plane region. Their spectral types and distances were estimated from photometric comparisons to well-known L dwarfs with trigonometric parallaxes. The first object, 2MASS J07555430-3259589, is an extremely red L7.5p dwarf candidate at a photometric distance of about 16 pc. Its position, proper motion and distance are consistent with membership in the Carina-Near young moving group. The second one, 2MASS J07414279-0506464, is resolved in Gaia DR1 as a close binary (separation 0.3 arcsec), and we classify it as a equal-mass binary candidate consisting of two L5 dwarfs at 19 pc. Using an accurate Gaia TGAS 25pc sample, nearly complete for GK stars, and selecting common proper motion (CPM) candidates from UCAC5, we search for new white dwarf (WD) companions around nearby stars with relatively small proper motions. For investigating known CPM systems in TGAS and for selecting CPM candidates in TGAS+UCAC5, we took into account the expected effect of orbital motion on the proper motion as well as the proper motion catalogue errors. Colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) $M_J/J-K_s$ and $M_G/G-J$ were used to verify CPM candidates from UCAC5. Assuming their common distance with a given TGAS star, we searched for candidates that occupied similar regions in the CMDs as the few known nearby WDs (4 in TGAS) and WD companions (3 in TGAS+UCAC5). CPM candidates with colours and absolute magnitudes corresponding neither to the main sequence nor to the WD sequence were considered as doubtful or subdwarf candidates. With a minimum proper motion of 60mas/yr, we selected three WD companion candidates, two of which are also confirmed by their significant parallaxes measured in URAT data, whereas the third may also be a chance alignment of a distant halo star with a nearby TGAS star (angular separation of about 465arcsec). One additional nearby WD candidate was found from its URAT parallax and $GJK_s$ photometry. With HD 166435 B orbiting a well-known G1 star at ~24.6pc with a projected physical separation of ~700AU, we discovered one of the hottest WDs, classified by us as DA2.0$\pm$0.2, in the solar neighbourhood. We also found TYC 3980-1081-1 B, a strong cool WD companion candidate around a recently identified new solar neighbour with a TGAS parallax corresponding to a distance of ~8.3pc and our photometric classification as ~M2 dwarf. Our goal was to compare the open cluster photometric distance scale of the global survey of star clusters in the Milky Way (MWSC) with the distances derived from trigonometric parallaxes from the Gaia DR1/TGAS catalogue and to investigate to which degree and extent both scales agree. We compared the parallax-based and photometry-based distances of 5743 cluster stars selected as members of 1118 clusters based on their kinematic and photometric MWSC membership probabilities. We found good overall agreement between trigonometric and photometric distances of open cluster stars. The residuals between them were small and unbiased up to $\log (d,[pc]) \approx 2.8$. The global survey of star clusters in the Milky Way (MWSC) is a comprehensive list of 3061 objects that provides, among other parameters, distances to clusters based on isochrone fitting. The Tycho-Gaia Astrometric Solution (TGAS) catalogue, which is a part of Gaia data release 1 (Gaia DR1), delivers accurate trigonometric parallax measurements for more than 2 million stars, including those in star clusters. We compare the open cluster photometric distance scale with the measurements given by the trigonometric parallaxes from TGAS to evaluate the consistency between these values. The average parallaxes of probable cluster members available in TGAS provide the trigonometric distance scale of open clusters, while the photometric scale is given by the distances published in the MWSC. Sixty-four clusters are suited for comparison as they have more than 16 probable members with parallax measurements in TGAS. We computed the average parallaxes of the probable members and compared these to the photometric parallaxes derived within the MWSC. We find a good agreement between the trigonometric TGAS-based and the photometric MWSC-based distance scales of open clusters, which for distances less than 2.3 kpc coincide at a level of about 0.1 mas with no dependence on the distance. Data Release 5 (DR5) of the Radial Velocity Experiment (RAVE) is the fifth data release from a magnitude-limited (9< I < 12) survey of stars randomly selected in the southern hemisphere. The RAVE medium-resolution spectra ($R\sim7500$) covering the Ca-triplet region (8410-8795\AA) span the complete time frame from the start of RAVE observations in 2003 to their completion in 2013. Radial velocities from 520,781 spectra of 457,588 unique stars are presented, of which 255,922 stellar observations have parallaxes and proper motions from the Tycho-Gaia astrometric solution (TGAS) in Gaia DR1. For our main DR5 catalog, stellar parameters (effective temperature, surface gravity, and overall metallicity) are computed using the RAVE DR4 stellar pipeline, but calibrated using recent K2 Campaign 1 seismic gravities and Gaia benchmark stars, as well as results obtained from high-resolution studies. Also included are temperatures from the Infrared Flux Method, and we provide a catalogue of red giant stars in the dereddened color $(J-Ks)_0$ interval (0.50,0.85) for which the gravities were calibrated based only on seismology. Further data products for sub-samples of the RAVE stars include individual abundances for Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Ti, Fe, and Ni, and distances found using isochrones. Each RAVE spectrum is complemented by an error spectrum, which has been used to determine uncertainties on the parameters. AIMS: We checked a sample of 545 F stars within 50 pc for wide companions using existing near-infrared and optical sky surveys. METHODS: Applying the common proper motion (CPM) criterion, we detected wide companion candidates with 6-120 arcsec angular separations by visual inspection of multi-epoch finder charts and by searching in proper motion catalogues. Final proper motions were measured by involving positional measurements from up to eleven surveys. Spectral types of red CPM companions were estimated from their absolute $J$-band magnitudes based on the Hipparcos distances of the primaries. RESULTS: In addition to about 100 known CPM objects, we found 19 new CPM companions and confirmed 31 previously known candidates. A few CPM objects are still considered as candidates according to their level of proper motion agreement. Among the new objects there are nine M0-M4, eight M5-M6, one $\approx$L3.5 dwarf (HD 3861B), and one white dwarf (WD) (HD 2726B), whereas we confirmed two K, 19 M0-M4, six M5-M6, two early-L dwarfs, and two DA WDs as CPM companions. In a few cases, previous spectral types were available that all agree well with our estimates. Two companions (HD 22879B and HD 49933B) are associated with moderately metal-poor Gaia benchmark stars. Aims: Our aim is to detect and classify previously overlooked brown dwarfs in the solar neighbourhood. Methods: We performed a proper motion search among bright sources observed with the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) that are also seen in the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS). Our candidates appear according to their red $J$$-$$K_s$ colours as nearby late-L dwarf candidates. Low-resolution near-infrared (NIR) classification spectroscopy in the $HK$ band allowed us to get spectroscopic distance and tangential velocity estimates. Results: We have discovered a new L9.5 dwarf, WISEA J064750.85-154616.4, at a spectroscopic distance of about 14 pc and with a tangential velocity of about 11 km/s, typical of the Galactic thin disc population. AIMS: Using Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) data and previous optical and near-infrared sky surveys, we try to identify still missing stellar and substellar neighbours of the Sun. METHODS: When checking the brightest red WISE sources for proper motions and colours expected for nearby M and L dwarfs we also approached the thin Galactic plane. Astrometry (proper motion and parallax measurements) and the available photometry were used to give first estimates of the distance and type of nearby candidates. RESULTS: We have discovered WISE J072003.20$-$084651.2, an object with moderately high proper motion ($\mu$$\approx$120 mas/yr) and at low Galactic latitude ($b$$=$$+$2.3$\degr$), with similar brightness ($J$$\approx$10.6, $w2$$\approx$8.9) and colours ($I$$-$$J$$\approx$3.2, $J$$-$$K_s$$\approx$1.2, $w1$$-$$w2$$\approx$0.3) as the nearest known M-type brown dwarf LP 944-20. With a photometric classification as an M9$\pm$1 dwarf, its photometric distance lies in the range between about 5 and 7 pc, based on comparison with absolute magnitudes of LP 944-20 alone or of a sample of M8-L0 dwarfs.The slightly larger distance derived from our preliminary trigonometric parallax (7.0$\pm$1.9 pc) may indicate a close binary nature. Although many new brown dwarf (BD) neighbours have recently been discovered thanks to new sky surveys in the mid- and near-infrared (MIR, NIR), their numbers are still more than five times lower than those of stars in the same volume. Our aim is to detect and classify new BDs to eventually complete their census in the immediate Solar neighbourhood. We combined multi-epoch data from sky surveys at different wavelengths to detect BD neighbours of the Sun by their high proper motion (HPM). We concentrated at relatively bright MIR (w2<13.5) BD candidates from WISE expected to be so close to the Sun that they may also be seen in older NIR (2MASS, DENIS) or even red optical (SDSS i- and z-band, SSS I-band) surveys. With low-resolution NIR spectroscopy we classified the new BDs and estimated their distances and velocities. We have discovered the HPM (pm~470mas/yr) T7.5 dwarf, WISE J0521+1025, which is at d=5.0+-1.3pc from the Sun the nearest known T dwarf in the northern sky, and two early-T dwarfs, WISE J0457-0207 (T2) and WISE J2030+0749 (T1.5), with proper motions of ~120 and ~670mas/yr and distances of 12.5+-3.1pc and 10.5+-2.6pc, respectively. The last one was independently discovered and also classified as a T1.5 dwarf by Mace and coworkers. All three show thin disk kinematics. AIMS: We contribute to improving the census of cool brown dwarfs (late-T and Y dwarfs) in the immediate solar neighbourhood. METHODS: By combining near-infrared (NIR) data of UKIDSS with mid-infrared WISE and other available NIR (2MASS) and red optical (SDSS $z$-band) multi-epoch data we detect high proper motion (HPM) objects with colours typical of late spectral types ($>$T5). We use NIR low-resolution spectroscopy for the classification of new candidates. RESULTS: We determined new proper motions for 14 known T5.5-Y0 dwarfs, many of them being significantly ($>$2-10 times) more accurate than previous ones. We detected three new candidates, ULAS J0954+0623, ULAS J1152+0359, and ULAS J1204-0150, by their HPMs and colours. Using previously published and new UKIDSS positions of the known nearby T8 dwarf WISE J0254+0223 we improved its trigonometric parallax to 165$\pm$20 mas. For the three new objects we obtained NIR spectroscopic follow-up with LBT/LUCIFER classifying them as T5.5 and T6 dwarfs. With their estimated spectroscopic distances of about 25-30 pc, their proper motions of about 430-650 mas/yr lead to tangential velocities of about 50-80 km/s typical of the Galactic thin disk population., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, plus 3 pages with 5 tables (online material), accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

The mass of the Galactic dark matter halo is under vivid discussion. A recent study by Xue et al. (2008, ApJ, 684, 1143) revised the Galactic halo mass downward by a factor of ~2 relative to previous work, based on the line-of-sight velocity distribution of ~2400 blue horizontal-branch (BHB) halo stars. The observations were interpreted in a statistical approach using cosmological galaxy formation simulations, as only four of the 6D phase-space coordinates were determined. Here we concentrate on a close investigation of the stars with highest negative radial velocity from that sample. For one star, SDSSJ153935.67+023909.8 (J1539+0239 for short), we succeed in measuring a significant proper motion, i.e. full phase-space information is obtained. We confirm the star to be a Population II BHB star from an independent quantitative analysis of the SDSS spectrum - providing the first NLTE study of any halo BHB star - and reconstruct its 3D trajectory in the Galactic potential. J1539+0239 turns out as the fastest halo star known to date, with a Galactic rest-frame velocity of 694$^{+300}_{-221}$ km/s (full uncertainty range from Monte Carlo error propagation) at its current position. The extreme kinematics of the star allows a significant lower limit to be put on the halo mass in order to keep it bound, of M_halo$\ge1.7_{-1.1}^{+2.3}\times10^{12}$ Msun. We conclude that the Xue et al. results tend to underestimate the true halo mass as their most likely mass value is consistent with our analysis only at a level of 4%. It is textbook knowledge that open clusters are conspicuous members of the thin disk of our Galaxy, but their role as contributors to the stellar population of the disk was regarded as minor. Starting from a homogenous stellar sky survey, the ASCC-2.5, we revisited the population of open clusters in the solar neighbourhood from scratch. In the course of this enterprise we detected 130 formerly unknown open clusters, constructed volume- and magnitude-limited samples of clusters, re-determined distances, motions, sizes, ages, luminosities and masses of 650 open clusters. We derived the present-day luminosity and mass functions of open clusters (not the stellar mass function in open clusters), the cluster initial mass function CIMF and the formation rate of open clusters. We find that open clusters contributed around 40 percent to the stellar content of the disk during the history of our Galaxy. The discovery of epsilon Indi Ba, Bb, a binary brown dwarf system very close to the Sun, makes possible a concerted campaign to characterise the physical parameters of two T dwarfs. Recent observations suggest substellar atmospheric and evolutionary models may be inconsistent with observations, but there have been few conclusive tests to date. We therefore aim to characterise these benchmark brown dwarfs to place constraints on such models. We have obtained high angular resolution optical, near-infrared, and thermal-infrared imaging and medium-resolution (up to R~5000) spectroscopy of epsilon Indi Ba, Bb with the ESO VLT and present VRIzJHKL'M' broad-band photometry and 0.63--5.1 micron spectroscopy of the individual components. Furthermore, we use deep AO-imaging to place upper limits on the (model-dependent) mass of any further system members. We derive luminosities of log L/L_sun = -4.699+/-0.017 and -5.232+/-0.020 for epsilon Indi Ba, Bb, respectively, and using the dynamical system mass and COND03 evolutionary models predict a system age of 3.7--4.3 Gyr, in excess of previous estimates and recent predictions from observations of these brown dwarfs. Moreover, the effective temperatures of 1352--1385 K and 976--1011 K predicted from the COND03 evolutionary models, for epsilon Indi Ba and Bb respectively, are in disagreement with those derived from the comparison of our data with the BT-Settl atmospheric models where we find effective temperatures of 1300--1340 K and 880--940 K, for epsilon Indi Ba and Bb respectively, with surface gravities of log g=5.25 and 5.50. Finally, we show that spectroscopically determined effective temperatures and surface gravities for ultra-cool dwarfs can lead to underestimated masses even where precise luminosity constraints are available., Comment: 27 pages, 30 figures, 9 tables, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

The discovery of Epsilon Indi Ba and Bb, a nearby binary brown dwarf system with a main-sequence companion, allows a concerted campaign to characterise the physical parameters of two T dwarfs providing benchmarks against which atmospheric and evolutionary models can be tested. Some recent observations suggest the models at low mass and intermediate age may not reflect reality with, however, few conclusive tests. We are carrying out a comprehensive characterisation of these, the nearest known brown dwarfs, to allow constraints to be placed upon models of cool field dwarfs. We present broadband photometry from the V- to M-band and the individual spectrum of both components from 0.6-5.1 microns at a resolution of up to R=5000. A custom analytic profile fitting routine was implemented to extract the blended spectra and photometry of both components separated by 0.7 arcsec. We confirm the spectral types to be T1 and T6, and notably, we do not detect lithium at 6708A in the more massive object which may be indicative both of the age of the system and the mass of the components., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, to appear in proceedings of Cool Stars 15

Ultracool subdwarfs are low luminosity, late-type M and L dwarfs that exhibit spectroscopic indications of subsolar metallicity and halo kinematics. Their recent discovery and ongoing investigation have led to new insights into the role of metallicity in the opacity structure, chemistry (e.g. dust formation) and evolution of low-temperature atmospheres; the long-term evolution of magnetic activity and angular momentum amongst the lowest-mass stars; the form of the halo luminosity and mass functions down to the hydrogen-burning mass limit; and even fundamental issues such as spectral classification and absolute brightness scales. A search of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey spectroscopic database has turned up 23 new ultra-cool subdwarfs, low-mass metal-poor stars of spectral subtype M 7.0 or later. Spectra from these red objects all show very strong molecular bands of CaH but relatively weak bands of TiO, indicative of a cool, metal-poor atmosphere. Five of the stars are formally classified as M subdwarfs (sdM7.0-sdM8.5), 13 as more metal-poor extreme subdwarfs (esdM7.0-esdM8.0), and five as extremely metal-poor ultra subdwarfs (usdM7.0-usdM7.5). In the [H_r,r-z] reduced proper motion diagram, these subdwarfs clearly populate the locus of low-luminosity stars with halo kinematics. It is argued that the objects are all very low-mass, metal-poor stars from the Galactic halo (Population II). These new discoveries more than double the census of spectroscopically confirmed ultra-cool subdwarfs. We show that the stars stand out remarkably in the [g-r,r-i] color-color diagram; a proposed color and proper motion selection scheme is expected to be extremely efficient in identifying more of these old, very low mass stars in the vicinity of the Sun., Comment: 4 pages, submitted to the Astrophysical Journal Letters, version 2 includes minor corrections

Distance estimates based on low-resolution spectroscopy and Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) J magnitudes are presented for a large sample of 322 nearby candidates from Luyten's NLTT catalogue. Mainly relatively bright (typically 7 < K_s < 11) and red high proper motion stars have been selected according to their 2MASS magnitudes and optical-to-infrared colours (+1 < R-K_s < +7). Some LHS stars previously lacking spectroscopy have also been included. We have classified the majority of the objects as early-M dwarfs (M2-M5). More than 70% of our targets turned out to lie within the 25 pc horizon of the catalogue of nearby stars, with 50 objects placed within 15 pc and 8 objects being closer than 10 pc. Three objects in the 10 pc sample have no previously published spectral type: LP 876-10 (M4), LP 870-65 (M4.5), and LP 869-26 (M5). A large fraction of the objects in our sample (57%) have independent distance estimates, mainly by the recent efforts of Reid and collaborators. Our distance determinations are generally in good agreement with theirs. 11 rather distant (d > 100 pc) objects have also been identified, including a probable halo, but relatively hot (T_eff = 13000 K) white dwarf (LHS 1200) and 10 red dwarfs with extremely large tangential velocities (250 < v_t < 1150 km/s). Altogether, there are 11 red dwarfs (including one within 70 pc) with tangential velocities larger than about 250 km/s. All these objects are suspected to be in fact subdwarfs, if so, their distances would be only about half of our original estimates. The SuperCOSMOS Sky Surveys provide a complete coverage of the Southern sky in three passbands (photographic B_J, R and I) and at different epochs (Hambly et al. 2001a,b,c). These data are the basis for a new high proper motion survey which aims at finding extremely red nearby dwarf stars and brown dwarfs. One of the first candidates, which is relatively bright (I=16) but very red (R-I=2.8, B_J-R=3.6), was detected in the equatorial zone by its large proper motion of 0.56 arcsec/yr. Spectroscopic follow-up observations with the 2.2m telescope of the Calar Alto Observatory classified this object as L2 dwarf very similar to the first free-floating L dwarf Kelu1 also discovered in a proper motion survey by Ruiz et al. (1997). If we assume SSSPMJ0829-1309 to have the same luminosity as Kelu1, we get a distance estimate for the new L dwarf of about 12pc since it is about one magnitude brighter than Kelu1 in the SSS I and R bands. This makes SSSPMJ0829-1309 one of the nearest objects of its class, well suited for detailed investigations. We have identified two late M dwarfs within 10 parsecs of the Sun, by cross-correlating the Luyten NLTT catalogue of stars with proper motions larger than 0.18 arcsec/yr, with objects lacking optical identification in the 2MASS data base. The 2MASS photometry was then combined with improved optical photometry obtained from the SuperCOSMOS Sky Surveys. The two objects (LP775-31 and LP655-48) have extremely red optical-to-infrared colours ((R-K)~7) and very bright infrared magnitudes (K_s<10): follow-up optical spectroscopy with the ESO 3.6-m telescope gave spectral types of M8.0 and M7.5 dwarfs, respectively. Comparison of their near-infrared magnitudes with the absolute magnitudes of known M8 and M7.5 dwarfs with measured trigonometric parallaxes yields spectroscopic distance estimates of 6.4+/-1.4 parsecs and 8.0+/-1.6 parsecs for LP775-31 and LP655-48, respectively. In contrast, Cruz & Reid (2002) recently determined spectral types of M6 for both objects, and commensurately larger distances of 11.3+/-1.3 parsecs and 15.3+/-2.6 parsecs. LP655-48 is also a bright X-ray source (1RXS J044022.8-053020).
