Abstract

International audience; Alloy melts can solidify into metallic glasses if cooled fast enough to avoid crystallization. Glass-forming ability (GFA), a measure of the ease of vitrification, is vital for the fundamental understanding of glass formation, and is also crucial for the application of metallic glasses. Previous studies of GFA mainly focused on the undercooled liquid phase, while the influence of the evolution of the stable melts on GFA is rarely addressed. Here we show that the Pd42.5Ni42.5P15 glass-forming liquid, in which a first-order liquid-liquid transition (LLT) takes place at TLL = 1063 K high above its liquidus temperature, shows significantly different GFA when quenched from the temperature above or below TLL. Moreover, the pathway and kinetics of crystallization of the melt are strongly related to the kinetics of the LLT. Our work provides new insights into the vitrification process and the kinetics of crystallization, and contributes to designing more stable metallic glasses.

Abstract

Photomorphogenesis is a critical developmental process bridging light-regulated transcriptional reprogramming with morphological changes in organisms. Strikingly, the chromatin-based transcriptional control of photomorphogenesis remains poorly understood. Here, we show that the Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) ortholog of ATP-dependent chromatin-remodeling factor AtINO80 represses plant photomorphogenesis. Loss of AtINO80 inhibited hypocotyl cell elongation and caused anthocyanin accumulation. Both light-induced genes and dark-induced genes were affected in the atino80 mutant. Genome-wide occupancy of the H2A.Z histone variant and levels of histone H3 were reduced in atino80. In particular, AtINO80 bound the gene body of ELONGATED HYPOCOTYL 5 (HY5), resulting in lower chromatin incorporations of H2A.Z and H3 at HY5 in atino80. Genetic analysis revealed that AtINO80 acts in a phytochrome B- and HY5-dependent manner in the regulation of photomorphogenesis. Together, our study elucidates a mechanism wherein AtINO80 modulates nucleosome density and H2A.Z incorporation and represses the transcription of light-related genes, such as HY5, to fine tune plant photomorphogenesis.

Abstract

SF6 is widely used in the industrial field due to its stable structure and excellent properties. It is mainly used in electrical insulation equipment. Due to the boiling point of SF6, its use in extremely cold regions has been limited. It is harmful to the health of practitioners due to the toxicity of decomposition products. The gas has limited its wider use because of its strong greenhouse effect. As a result, researchers and electrical equipment manufacturing companies around the world are gradually searching for new environmentally friendly gases and have conducted research and exploration on theory and experiment. In this paper, the current status and existing problems of SF6 are summarized. The research contents and research methods of SF6 alternative gas direction are reviewed from the aspects of insulation performance, interrupter performance, and decomposition performance. The existing research results of the natural gas, SF6 mixed gas, perfluorocarbons, and CnFmX gas are summarized, and the future development trend of alternative gas for SF6 in the electrical industry is proposed.

Abstract

The off-diagonal (electric, thermal and thermoelectric) transport coefficients of a solid can acquire an anomalous component due to the non-trivial topology of the Bloch waves. We present a study of the anomalous Hall (AHE), Nernst (ANE) and thermal Hall effects (ATHE) in the Heusler Weyl ferromagnet Co$_2$MnGa. The Anomalous Wiedemann-Franz law, linking electric and thermal responses, was found to be valid over the whole temperature window. This indicates that the AHE has an intrinsic origin and the Berry spectrum is smooth in the immediate vicinity of the Fermi level. From the ANE data, we extract the magnitude and temperature dependence of $\alpha^A_{ij}$ and put under scrutiny the $\alpha^A_{ij}/\sigma^A_{ij}$ ratio, which approaches k$_B$/e at room temperature. We show that in various topological magnets the room-temperature magnitude of this ratio is a sizeable fraction of k$_B$/e and argue that the two anomalous transverse coefficients depend on universal constants, the Berry curvature averaged over a window set by either the Fermi wavelength (for Hall) or the de Broglie thermal length (for Nernst). Since the ratio of the latter two is close to unity at room temperature, such a universal scaling finds a natural explanation in the intrinsic picture of anomalous transverse coefficients., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, supplemental material included

Abstract

The highly stable spin of neutron stars can be exploited for a variety of (astro-)physical investigations. In particular arrays of pulsars with rotational periods of the order of milliseconds can be used to detect correlated signals such as those caused by gravitational waves. Three such "Pulsar Timing Arrays" (PTAs) have been set up around the world over the past decades and collectively form the "International" PTA (IPTA). In this paper, we describe the first joint analysis of the data from the three regional PTAs, i.e. of the first IPTA data set. We describe the available PTA data, the approach presently followed for its combination and suggest improvements for future PTA research. Particular attention is paid to subtle details (such as underestimation of measurement uncertainty and long-period noise) that have often been ignored but which become important in this unprecedentedly large and inhomogeneous data set. We identify and describe in detail several factors that complicate IPTA research and provide recommendations for future pulsar timing efforts. The first IPTA data release presented here (and available online) is used to demonstrate the IPTA's potential of improving upon gravitational-wave limits placed by individual PTAs by a factor of ~2 and provides a 2-sigma limit on the dimensionless amplitude of a stochastic GWB of 1.7x10^{-15} at a frequency of 1 yr^{-1}. This is 1.7 times less constraining than the limit placed by (Shannon et al. 2015), due mostly to the more recent, high-quality data they used., 25 pages, 6 tables, 5 figures. Abstract

BiFeO3, a typical multiferroic compound, owns complicated interactions among its charge, lattice, and spin degrees, while largely remaining a mystery. In this work, the BiFeO3 single crystal has been investigated in pulsed high magnetic fields up to 50 T. The lattice, spin, and charge orderings are found to couple with each other strongly. High magnetic field could drive the spin cycloid phase to a canted antiferromagnetic phase while accompanied by a clear magnetostriction response and weakening of ferroelectric polarization. The critical magnetic field for the magnetic phase transition was shifted to the lower magnetic field region by an external electric field over a broad temperature range, which indicates the complex interaction among magnetization, electrical polarization, and crystal lattice. 7. An analog of photon-assisted tunneling in a periodically modulated waveguide array.

Abstract

We theoretically report an analog of photon-assisted tunneling (PAT) originated from dark Floquet state in a periodically driven lattice array without a static biased potential by studying a three-channel waveguide system in a non-high-frequency regime. This analog of PAT can be achieved by only periodically modulating the top waveguide and adjusting the distance between the bottom and its adjacent waveguide. It is numerically shown that the PAT resonances also exist in the five-channel waveguide system and probably exist in the waveguide arrays with other odd numbers of waveguides, but they will become weak as the number of waveguides increases. With origin different from traditional PAT, this type of PAT found in our work is closely linked to the existence of the zero-energy (dark) Floquet states. It is readily observable under currently accessible experimental conditions and may be useful for controlling light propagation in waveguide arrays.
