A detailed study is presented of the expected performance of the ATLAS detector. The reconstruction of tracks, leptons, photons, missing energy and jets is investigated, together with the performance of b-tagging and the trigger. The physics potential for a variety of interesting physics processes, within the Standard Model and beyond, is examined. The study comprises a series of notes based on simulations of the detector and physics processes, with particular emphasis given to the data expected from the first years of operation of the LHC at CERN.

We explain the phi and t dependences of mesons with JPC = 0-+, 0++,1++, 2-+ and 2++ produced in the central region of pp collisions. For the 0++ and 2++ sector this reveals a systematic behaviour in the data that appears to distinguish between qqbar and non-qqbar or glueball candidates., Comment: 12 pages, Latex, 4 Figures typographical error in equation (2) corrected

High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
According to our present understanding many $J/\psi$ production processes proceed through a coloured $c\bar{c}$ state followed by the emission of soft particles in the quarkonium rest frame. The kinematic effect of soft particle emission is usually a higher-order effect in the non-relativistic expansion, but becomes important near the kinematic endpoint of quarkonium energy (momentum) distributions. In an intermediate region a systematic resummation of the non-relativistic expansion leads to the introduction of so-called `shape functions'. In this paper we provide an implementation of the kinematic effect of soft gluon emission which is consistent with the non-relativistic shape function formalism in the region where it is applicable and which models the extreme endpoint region. We then apply the model to photoproduction of $J/\psi$ and $J/\psi$ production in $B$ meson decay. A satisfactory description of $B$ decay data is obtained. For inelastic charmonium photoproduction we conclude that a sensible comparison of theory with data requires a transverse momentum cut larger than the currently used 1 GeV., Comment: latex, 45 pages; (v2) some typos corrected, version to appear in PRD

High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
The detailed dependences of central meson production on the azimuthal angle phi, t and the meson J^P are shown to be consistent with the hypothesis that the soft Pomeron transforms as a non-conserved vector current. Further tests are proposed. This opens the way for a quantitative description of q-qbar and glueball production in p p -> p M p., Comment: 12 pages, latex, 4 figures

High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
We demonstrate that the azimuthal dependence of central meson production in hadronic collisions, when suitably binned, provides unambiguous tests of whether the Pomeron couples like a conserved vector-current to protons. We discuss the possibility of discriminating between q-qbar and glueball production in such processes. Our predictions apply also to meson production in tagged two-photon events at electron--positron colliders and to vector-meson production in ep collisions at HERA., Comment: 15 pages, latex, no figure

High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
Within the NRQCD factorization approach the production of heavy quarkonia can be calculated in perturbative QCD in terms of a few production-process-independent NRQCD matrix elements. We test the universality of these long-distance matrix elements by comparing their values as determined from charmonium production at p pbar, e p, and e+ e- colliders, and in Z^0, Upsilon, and B decays., Comment: 19 pages, latex, 4 figures

High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
Meson--photon--photon transition form factors for S-, P-, and D-wave states are calculated, the meson being treated as a non-relativistic heavy-quark--antiquark pair. The full dependence on both photon virtualities is included. Cross-section formulas for charge-conjugation even mesons with J^P = 0^-, 0^+, 1^+, 2^+, and 2^- in electron--positron collisions are presented and numerical results for LEP energies are given. In particular, we find two-photon event rates for \chi_{\rc 1}, \eta_{\rc}(2S), and \eta_{\rb}(1S) within reach of LEP. With minor modifications to incorporate SU(3)-flavour breaking we estimate rates for 18 light mesons as well, based on the observation that their two-photon decay widths agree remarkably well with measured data. Finally we point out that e^+ e^- cross sections for 1^+ states do not vanish at low Q^2, the Landau--Yang suppression factors of the two-photon cross sections being compensated by the photon propagators., Comment: 17 pages, Latex, 4 figures

High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
Inclusive production of $\chi_{c J}$ in $e^+e^-$ annihilation is an excellent probe of the role of higher Fock states in the production of heavy quarkonia. Within the non-relativistic QCD approach, contributions from the short-distance production of colour-octet $c\bar{c}$ pairs are significantly larger than those from colour-singlet production. At the same time, $\chi_{c J}$ production rates are significantly smaller than expected in the colour evaporation approach. Measurements of $\chi_{\c J}$ production at CLEO and future B-factories will thus constitute a major test of theoretical approaches to the production of heavy quarkonia., Comment: 11 pages, Revtex, 2 figures

High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
We present the first calculation of QED radiative corrections to deep-inelastic electron-photon scattering in terms of those variables that are reconstructed in measurements of the photon structure function in electron-positron collisions. In order to cover the low-$Q^2$ region, we do not invoke the QCD-improved parton model but rather express our results in terms of the photon structure functions. Both analytical and numerical results are given., Comment: Latex, 8 pages, 3 figures, uses epsfig.sty, 12pt.sty

High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
We investigate the theoretical uncertainties of $P$-wave charmonium decays into two pions, $\chi_{\c J}\rightarrow \pi^+\pi^-$, $\pi^0\pi^0$. Constraining the pion distribution-amplitude from the recent precise data on $F_{\pi\gamma}(Q^2)$, we find an order-of-magnitude discrepancy between data and prediction. The disagreement persists even after inclusion of transverse degrees of freedom and Sudakov suppressions. We propose the colour-octet mechanism as the solution to the puzzle. The colour-octet decay contribution arising from the higher Fock component $|\c \cbar \g >$ of the $\chi_{\c J}$ wave function is actually not power suppressed with respect to the usual colour-singlet decay arising from the dominant $|\c \cbar >$ Fock state. An explicit calculation yields an agreement with the data for a very reasonable value for the single extra non-perturbative parameter., Comment: 12 pages Latex, 3 PS-files of figures, uses macros 'amstex' and 'psfig'; also available by anonymous ftp from ftp://wpts0.physik.uni-wuppertal.de/pub/bolz/pwav/

High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
Quarkonium decays are studied in the charmonium model. Relativistic corrections, higher-order perturbative QCD corrections and non- perturbative contributions are discussed. Recent measurements of charmonium annihilation rates are used to evaluate the strong coupling constant $\alpha_s$ simultaneously with the wave functions (and their derivatives) at the origin. Further predictions are made for yet unobserved decay rates. The various models for quarkonium production in hadronic collisions are critically reviewed. Based on the charmonium model, the cross sections of different quarkonium states are given in a well-defined QCD perturbation series, including quark--antiquark, quark--gluon, and gluon--gluon scatterings. Numerical estimates are given for charmonium production in $\p\p$, $\ppbar$, and $\pi\p$ collisions. The role of indirect $\JP$ production via $\chi_{\c J}(1P)$, $\eta_{\c}(2S)$, $\psi(2S)$ and $\b$-decays is pointed out. Relativistic effects and non-perturbative contributions are found to be important. Existing measurements are compiled and shown to be well explained if all contributions are included. The ${}^1S_0$ cross section is calculated in complete next-to-leading order. Finally, a study of the high-energy behaviour of quarkonium cross sections is made, based on the asymptotical behaviour of higher-order QCD corrections., Comment: 128 pages, compressed ps file available via anonymous ftp to darssrv1.cern.ch: cern/9402/th-7170-94.ps.Z, CERN-TH.7170/94

- Abstract

Preclinical testing of novel therapeutics for chronic hepatitis B (CHB) requires suitable animal models. Equids host homologs of hepatitis C virus (HCV). Because coinfections of hepatitis B virus (HBV) and HCV occur in humans, we screened 2,917 specimens from equids from five continents for HBV. We discovered a distinct HBV species (Equid HBV, EqHBV) in 3.2% of donkeys and zebras by PCR and antibodies against EqHBV in 5.4% of donkeys and zebras. Molecular, histopathological, and biochemical analyses revealed that infection patterns of EqHBV resembled those of HBV in humans, including hepatotropism, moderate liver damage, evolutionary stasis, and potential horizontal virus transmission. Naturally infected donkeys showed chronic infections resembling CHB with high viral loads of up to 2.6 × 10(9) mean copies per milliliter serum for >6 mo and weak antibody responses. Antibodies against Equid HCV were codetected in 26.5% of donkeys seropositive for EqHBV, corroborating susceptibility to both hepatitis viruses. Deltavirus pseudotypes carrying EqHBV surface proteins were unable to infect human cells via the HBV receptor NTCP (Na(+)/taurocholate cotransporting polypeptide), suggesting alternative viral entry mechanisms. Both HBV and EqHBV deltavirus pseudotypes infected primary horse hepatocytes in vitro, supporting a broad host range for EqHBV among equids and suggesting that horses might be suitable for EqHBV and HBV infections in vivo. Evolutionary analyses suggested that EqHBV originated in Africa several thousand years ago, commensurate with the domestication of donkeys. In sum, EqHBV naturally infects diverse equids and mimics HBV infection patterns. Equids provide a unique opportunity for preclinical testing of novel therapeutics for CHB and to investigate HBV/HCV interplay upon coinfection.

This work was aimed at multiplying and maintaining in vitro plants from seedlings from five Tabebuia rosea (large spreading cedar tree) from and one Cordia alliodora (walnut tree used for providing shade for coffee plantations). Apical leaf buds were excised from mother plants (MP) and cultured in vitro until 1480 plants had been produced from the two species. The hardening process was carried out in greenhouse conditions using humid flow-chambers at Geoambiente Ltda's Bambusa experimental station in Pacho, Cundinamarca. A database was created using Microsoft Office Access software for handling information required for monitoring and evaluating each plant's behaviour during the in vitro culture process by calculating the rates of multiplication (RM) and loss (RL). The plants so produced will be used by Conif for field trials and evaluation purposes. This material will then be multiplied by vegetative propagation and used for clone and molecular testing analysis. Key words: in vitro collection and propagation, Tabebuia rosea, Cordia alliodora.
