Abstract

The synergy between catalysis and plasma chemistry often enhances the yield of chemical reactions in plasma-driven reactors. In the case of CO2 splitting into CO and O2, no positive synergistic effect was observed in earlier studies with plasma reactors, except for dielectric barrier discharges, that do not have a high yield and a high efficiency. Here, we demonstrate that introducing metal meshes into radio frequency-driven plasma reactors increases the relative reaction yield by 20%–50%, while supported metal oxide catalysts in the same setups have no effect. We attribute this to the double role of the metal mesh, which acts both as a catalyst for direct CO2 dissociation as well as for oxygen recombination. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

12. Stepping stones in CO2 utilization: Towards process development of oxalic and glycolic acid monomers

Abstract

Science shows that the global climate is changing and that anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions, mainly CO2, are largely to blame. Consequently, we need to ban as much fossil-based carbon from our lives and atmosphere as possible. Using CO2 as a feedstock will be a requirement for meeting our ambitions of a circular future and staying within the planetary boundaries. The work in this thesis is part of the OCEAN (EU Horizon 2020) project in which we develop a new route from CO2 to polymers. At the center of this route is oxalic acid and its role as a polyester monomer and new platform to produce chemicals and other monomers. We introduce the opportunities of oxalic acid and assess how it can be produced sustainably from renewable sources. In the following five chapters 2-6 we investigate the production of oxalic acid from formate. We first provide an overview of the reaction (Ch.2), introduce better catalyst for the reaction (Ch.3), find ideal reaction conditions using a response-surface-modeling approach (Ch.4), successfully couple formate with CO2 in ch.5, and study the mechanism in detail in a joint effort of experimental and molecular dynamic modeling (ch.6). In the last three chapters 7-9 we study the selective catalytic reduction of oxalic acid to glycolic acid. We screen suitable known and commercial catalysts for the reduction reaction (Ch. 7), establish an improved continuously operating process (Ch.8), and develop improved, highly selective multi-metal catalysts with higher stability in chapter 9.

23. Long-term seizure outcome in pediatric patients with focal cortical dysplasia undergoing tailored and standard surgical resections

Abstract

PURPOSE: Focal cortical dysplasia (FCD) is the major cause of focal intractable epilepsy in childhood. Here we analyze the factors influencing the success of surgical treatment in a large cohort of children with histologically ascertained FCD. METHOD: A retrospective study of the effects of FCD type, surgical intervention, and age at surgery in a pediatric cohort. RESULTS: A total of 113 patients (71 male; mean age at surgery 10.3 years; range 0-18) were analyzed; 45 had undergone lesionectomy, 42 lobectomy, 18 multi-lobectomy, and eight hemispherotomy. Complete seizure control (Engel Ia) was achieved in 56% after two years, 52% at five years, and 50% at last follow-up (18-204 months). Resections were more extensive in younger patients (40% of the surgeries affecting more than one lobe in patients aged nine years or younger vs. 22% in patients older than nine years). While resections were more limited in older children, their long-term outcome tended to be superior (42% seizure freedom in patients aged nine years or younger vs. 56% in patients older than nine years). The outcome in FCD I was not significantly inferior to that in FCD II. CONCLUSIONS: Our data confirm the long-term efficacy of surgery in children with FCD and epilepsy. An earlier age at surgery within this cohort did not predict a better long-term outcome, but it involved less-tailored surgical approaches. The data suggest that in patients with an unclear extent of the dysplastic area, later resections may offer advantages in terms of the precision of surgical-resection planning.

Item does not contain fulltext, Despite major improvements in allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation over the past decades, corticosteroid-refractory (SR) acute (a) and chronic (c) graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) cause high mortality. Preclinical evidence indicates the potent anti-inflammatory properties of the JAK1/2 inhibitor ruxolitinib. In this retrospective survey, 19 stem cell transplant centers in Europe and the United States reported outcome data from 95 patients who had received ruxolitinib as salvage therapy for SR-GVHD. Patients were classified as having SR-aGVHD (n=54, all grades III or IV) or SR-cGVHD (n=41, all moderate or severe). The median number of previous GVHD-therapies was 3 for both SR-aGVHD (1-7) and SR-cGVHD (1-10). The overall response rate was 81.5% (44/54) in SR-aGVHD including 25 complete responses (46.3%), while for SR-cGVHD the ORR was 85.4% (35/41). Of those patients responding to ruxolitinib, the rate of GVHD-relapse was 6.8% (3/44) and 5.7% (2/35) for SR-aGVHD and SR-cGVHD, respectively. The 6-month-survival was 79% (67.3-90.7%, 95% confidence interval (CI)) and 97.4% (92.3-100%, 95% CI) for SR-aGVHD and SR-cGVHD, respectively. Cytopenia and cytomegalovirus-reactivation were observed during ruxolitinib treatment in both SR-aGVHD (30/54, 55.6% and 18/54, 33.3%) and SR-cGVHD (7/41, 17.1% and 6/41, 14.6%) patients. Ruxolitinib may constitute a promising new treatment option for SR-aGVHD and SR-cGVHD that should be validated in a prospective trial.
