3. COVID-19 in pregnancy: prevalence, management, and outcomes in a single large health system.

Abstract

Objective: This study assessed the prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 positivity in a cohort of pregnant patients served by a single health system. Treatments and outcomes are compared by maternal SARS-CoV-2 status and COVID-19 symptomatology. Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study of patients with delivery outcomes from March 2020-December 2021. SARS-CoV-2 positivity was defined by patients who had a positive test or COVID-19 diagnosis during pregnancy. Descriptive analysis compared demographics, medical management during pregnancy, and both perinatal and non-obstetric outcomes by SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 status (negative, positive-asymptomatic, and positive-symptomatic). Results: Of 24,310 pregnancies, 94.6% were negative, 3.9% were positive-asymptomatic, and 1.5% were positive-symptomatic. Non-delivery hospitalizations were highest among positive-symptomatic patients (16.8%), followed by positive-asymptomatic patients (3.9%) and lastly negative patients (2.7%) (p < 0.001). Likewise, Intensive Care Unit (ICU) admissions during an antepartum or delivery admission were higher for positive-symptomatic patients (13.0%) compared to positive-asymptomatic patients or negative patients (0.7% and 0.5%, respectively, p < 0.001). The rate of preterm birth was significantly higher in positive-symptomatic patients compared to positive-asymptomatic and negative patients (15.7% vs. 9.5% and 9.8%, respectively, p = 0.002). There were no statistically significant differences in rates of miscarriage or intrauterine fetal demise. Maternal readmission, administration of corticosteroids for fetal lung maturity, birthweight, and neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) admission were significantly affected by SARS-CoV-2 status. Conclusion: Pregnant patients testing positive for SARS-CoV-2 were mostly asymptomatic and identified during routine screening. 10. Bridging the Divide: The Role of the Past in Understanding and Overcoming Ideological Differences

Abstract

Within the complex structure of political discourse, understanding the fundamental ideological differences between conservatives and liberals has been a longstanding challenge. While previous research has explored numerous psychological dimensions of these differences, the role of time as a determinant factor has received less attention. The present dissertation aims to fill this gap by examining the meaning of the past for political positions and exploring the potential of past-focused communication strategies to bridge political divides. Chapter 1 reviews theoretical frameworks and empirical evidence that support the relevance of the past for political preferences, particularly within conservative ideology. To validate this concept, Chapter 2 demonstrates that framing highly polarized COVID-19 policies as a return to the past can lead to modest yet significant political rapprochement by reducing conservative opposition. In Chapter 3, a cognitive-motivational explanation of conservatives’ preference for past-focused ideas is provided, suggesting that conservatives interpret the past as a realization of their fundamental epistemic and existential motives. Chapter 4 shows that appealing solely to these motives without connecting them to the past fails to bridge the divide effectively, highlighting the advantages of past-focused framing over other forms of framed communication. Chapter 5 demonstrates the unique potential of a focus on the past in reducing ideological outgroup hostility and enhancing willingness to engage in compromise across political lines. Overall, this dissertation contributes valuable insights to the understanding of the ideological underpinnings that shape the political landscape, fostering efforts for a more collaborative society.

Abstract

As a political ideology, conservatism is primarily focused on maintaining and restoring past society. This aspect is so central that conservatives' support for policies is increased simply by framing them as a return to the past. Until now, the underlying process of this temporal framing effect is unclear. Drawing on theories of conservatism as motivated social cognition, four preregistered studies (Ntotal = 2,405) test the hypothesis that it results from conservatives' epistemic and existential beliefs about the past. Studies 1 and 2 demonstrate that American conservatives' preference for past-focused political communication is blocked if the past is perceived to be inconsistent with these beliefs. Studies 3 and 4 (a representative UK sample replication) find that the effect is mediated by epistemic and existential beliefs about the past. This research theoretically integrates the earlier-established conservative temporal framing effect into the wider literature of conservatism as motivated social cognition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The Plastics Strategy passed by the European Union aims to ensure the reuse of ten million tons of recycled plastics in products by 2025. Discussions on how to achieve this target are usually mass-driven focusing on recycling quotas but neglecting quality targets. However, the circular economy aims to preserve resources at their highest possible value focusing on both mass and quality conservation, to close material loops in the long term. Therefore, changes in physical properties of recycled plastics compared to virgin plastics should be addressed, but measuring quality is a complex task. This article introduces a functional requirement matrix approach to assess mass and quality conservation using an indicator called circularity potential based on physical properties. The indicator is demonstrated in a case study on a non-food pouch made of low-density polyethylene (LDPE). Two samples from mechanical and dissolution recycling were examined in a laboratory and compared to virgin LDPE. We built on existing studies, but further introduced thermal and aesthetic requirements as well as established weighting and compliance parameters to address the complexity of quality conservation. The exemplary case study shows a circularity potential of 49% for recycled LDPE from dissolution recycling and 30% for mechanically recycled LDPE Mass and quality conservation are higher for dissolution than for mechanical recycling, but also rely on different waste streams that offer future research need. Further sensitivity analysis demonstrated the significance of weighting and compliance parameters. The provided approach is configurable for specific product applications and applicable in the context of life cycle assessments.

Abstract

Waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) is a particularly difficult waste to manage, characterized by hazardous and valuable chemicals. Emerging chemical recycling technologies are developed to unveil the possibility of sustainable treatment providing valuable resources from WEEE. This study develops a framework for prospective life cycle assessment (LCA) to explore a range of future scenarios in which the technology can be operated with low environmental impact. This is demonstrated in a case study focusing on plastics from WEEE, which are currently predominantly incinerated. The results reveal environmental benefits by WEEE treated via chemical recycling. In terms of climate change impacts, the best‐case scenario of chemical recycling shows a reduction potential of 74 % compared to current treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The potential of polymeric nanostructures obtained by extruding polymer solutions through reusable anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) nanopores for the fabrication of nanostructures is investigated systematically to be able to unveil the potential impact of structure on cell culturing. Thus, nanostructured Na‐alginate and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) polymers as well as blended alginate/PVA hydrogels are fabricated. Na‐alginate and PVA fibers with different dimensions can be obtained. By extruding Na‐alginate solutions into a non‐solvent also networks of uniform nanofibers (diameter <20 nm) are generated. PVA forms agglomerations of nanofibers and nanoparticles with diameter >100 nm. In addition, cell line‐dependent behavior of the cross‐linked PVA/alginate nanofibers is observed, which is characterized by reduced cell adhesion and cluster formation of PaTu 8988t cells on these blend nanofibers compared to normal cell adhesive behavior of NIH 3T3 cells.
