Abstract

The reported diffusion constants for hydrogen in silicon vary over six orders of magnitude. This spread in measured values is caused by the different concentrations of defects in the silicon that has been studied. Hydrogen diffusion is slowed down as it interacts with impurities. By changing the material properties such as the crystallinity, doping type and impurity concentrations, the diffusivity of hydrogen can be changed by several orders of magnitude. In this study the influence of the hydrogen concentration on the temperature dependence of the diffusion in high energy proton implanted silicon is investigated. We show that the Arrhenius parameters, which describe this temperature dependence decrease with increasing hydrogen concentration. We propose a model where the relevant defects that mediate hydrogen diffusion become saturated with hydrogen at high concentrations. When the defects that provide hydrogen with the lowest energy positions in the lattice are saturated, hydrogen resides at energetically less favorable positions and this increases the diffusion of hydrogen through the crystal. Furthermore, we present a survey of different studies on the diffusion of hydrogen. 37. Consequences of Filial Support for Two Generations: A Narrative and Quantitative Review

Abstract

This narrative and quantitative review synthesizes findings from 55 (N = 54,550) studies on the association between providing support to elderly parents and well-being of adult children as well as well-being of parents, in an endeavor to determine the prevailing direction of effects, magnitude of effects, and possible factors that may moderate these effects. The relation between caring for an elderly parent and well-being and/or caregiver burden in adult children was found to be insubstantial. Likewise, being cared for by adult children was found to be weakly related to well-being in elderly parents. More complex models including psychological aspects of caring; aspects of the intergenerational relationship, such as quality; and the inclusion of both the adult child's and the parent's perspectives on providing and receiving support appear more promising for understanding caregiving and well-being in intergenerational relationships beyond childhood. 38. Intergenerational Relations across 4 Years: Well-Being Is Affected by Quality, Not by Support Exchange

Abstract

Purpose: Providing support to an aging parent may pose challenges to adult children but also provide an opportunity to "give back" to loved ones. The current study investigated changes in emotional and instrumental support and quality across a period of 4 years. Additionally, associations between intergenerational support and well-being in adult children over time were investigated. Design and Methods: Data from the first and second waves of the Netherlands Kinship Panel Study (N = 6,062) were analyzed to investigate the relative importance of relationship quality and support exchange and to test the potential buffering role of relationship quality for effects of the changing balance of support on well-being. Results: It was found that provision of instrumental and emotional support to parents increased during a period of 4 years. At the same time, instrumental support children received from parents decreased, whereas emotional support from parents increased. Intergenerational support exchange between children and parents was not associated with well-being in children, whereas the quality of the intergenerational relationship strongly predicted their well-being. Implications: Decreasing relationship quality seems a greater threat to the well-being of caregiving children than increased support and care tasks. Family counseling and public awareness to address this decline in intergenerational relationship quality may be important for well-being of families.

Abstract

Classical cultural studies, or 'Landeskunde', as it has been known since the first textbooks on teaching German as a foreign language, tells its readers a lot about a country, initially in a cognitive manner, and later also through an intercultural and communicative approach. Alongside historical events like the fall of the Berlin wall, aspects of everyday life and culture have come into focus, as is evidenced by the existence of many texts about food in Germany, Austria and Switzerland (commonly known as DACH). These classical approaches to 'Landeskunde' are challenged in this essay by arguing that 'Landeskunde' is often transmitted implicitly, through the protagonists of the textbooks and the stories they tell - therefore, 'Landeskunde' is also people's studies. It is in these stories that a country is told. Are German textbooks still dominated by "young, dynamic, cheerful people of different origins" (Funk 2004: 41, translated by the author) that "principally belong to a prosperous bourgeois middle class" (Altmayer 2017: 17, translated by the author)? What are the stories about German-speaking countries that they tell? How is the discursive approach to 'Landeskunde' being implemented?
