Phonons in solid-state quantum emitters play a crucial role in their performance as photon sources in quantum technology. For resonant driving, phonons dampen the Rabi oscillations resulting in reduced preparation fidelities. The phonon spectral density, which quantifies the strength of the carrier-phonon interaction, is non-monotonous as a function of energy. As one of the most prominent consequences, this leads to the reappearance of Rabi rotations for increasing pulse power, which was theoretically predicted in Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 227403 (2007). In this paper we present the experimental demonstration of the reappearance of Rabi rotations.

We describe an experimental concept at the National Ignition Facility for specifically tailored spherical implosions to compress hydrogen to extreme densities (up to $\sim$800$\times$ solid density, electron number density n$_e$$\sim$4$\times$10$^{25}$ cm$^{-3}$ ) at moderate temperatures (T$\sim$200 eV), i.e., to conditions, which are relevant to the interiors of red dwarf stars. The dense plasma will be probed by laser-generated x-ray radiation of different photon energy to determine the plasma opacity due to collisional (free-free) absorption and Thomson scattering. The obtained results will benchmark radiation transport models, which in the case for free-free absorption show strong deviations at conditions relevant to red dwarfs. This very first experimental test of free-free opacity models at these extreme states will help to constrain where inside those celestial objects energy transport is dominated by radiation or convection. Moreover, our study will inform models for other important processes in dense plasmas, which are based on electron-ion collisions, e.g., stopping of swift ions or electron-ion temperature relaxation.

Photonic quantum technologies$^1$, with applications in quantum communication, sensing as well as quantum simulation and computing, are on the verge of becoming commercially available. One crucial building block are tailored nanoscale integratable quantum light sources, matching the specific needs of use-cases. Several different approaches to realize solid-state quantum emitters$^2$ with high performance$^3$ have been pursued. However, the properties of the emitted single photons are always defined by the individual quantum light source and despite numerous quantum emitter tuning techniques$^{4-7}$, scalability is still a major challenge. Here we show an emitter-independent method to tailor and control the properties of the single photon emission. We demonstrate a laser-controlled down-conversion process from an excited state of a quantum three-level system$^8$. Starting from a biexciton state, a tunable control laser field defines a virtual state in a stimulated process. From there, spontaneous emission to the ground state leads to optically controlled single photon emission. Based on this concept, we demonstrate energy tuning of the single photon emission with a control laser field. The nature of the involved quantum states furthermore provides a unique basis for the future control of polarization and bandwidth, as predicted by theory$^{9,10}$. Our demonstration marks an important step towards tailored single photon emission from a photonic quantum system based on quantum optical principles.

Innovative applications based on two-dimensional solids require cost-effective fabrication processes resulting in large areas of high quality materials. Chemical vapour deposition is among the most promising methods to fulfill these requirements. However, for 2D materials prepared in this way it is generally assumed that they are of inferior quality in comparison to the exfoliated 2D materials commonly used in basic research. In this work we challenge this assumption and aim to quantify the differences in quality for the prototypical transition metal dichalcogenide MoS$_2$. To this end single layers of MoS$_2$ prepared by different techniques (exfoliation, grown by different chemical vapor deposition methods, transfer techniques, and as vertical heterostructure with graphene) are studied by Raman and photoluminescence spectroscopy, complemented by atomic force microscopy. We demonstrate that as-prepared MoS$_2$, directly grown on SiO$_2$, differs from exfoliated MoS$_2$ in terms of higher photoluminescence, lower electron concentration, and increased strain. As soon as a water film is intercalated (e.g., by transfer) underneath the grown MoS$_2$, in particular the (opto-)electronic properties become practically identical to those of exfoliated MoS$_2$. A comparison of the two most common precursors shows that the growth with MoO$_3$ causes greater strain and/or defect density deviations than growth with ammonium heptamolybdate. As part of a heterostructure directly grown MoS$_2$ interacts much stronger with the substrate, and in this case an intercalated water film does not lead to the complete decoupling, which is typical for exfoliation or transfer. Our work shows that the supposedly poorer quality of grown 2D transition metal dichalcogenides is indeed a misconception.

Exciton polaritons in semiconductor microcavities exhibit many fundamental physical effects, with some of them amenable to being controlled by external fields. The polariton transport is affected by the polaritonic spin-orbit interaction, which is caused by the splitting of transverse-electric and transverse-magnetic (TE-TM) modes. This is the basis for a polaritonic Hall effect, called optical spin Hall effect (OSHE), which is related to the formation of spin/polarization textures in momentum space, determining anisotropic ballistic transport, as well as related textures in real space. Owing to Coulombic interactions between the excitonic components of the polaritons, optical excitation of polaritons can affect the OSHE. We present a theoretical analysis of the OSHE and its optical control in semiconductor double microcavities, i.e. two optically coupled cavities, which are particularly well suited for the creation of polaritonic reservoirs that affect the spin-texture-forming polaritons. The theory is formulated in terms of a set of double-cavity spinor-polariton Gross-Pitaevskii equations. Numerical solutions feature, among other things, a controlled rotation of the spin texture in momentum space. The theory also allows for an identification of the effective magnetic field component that determines the optical control in phenomenological pseudo-spin models in terms of exciton interactions and the polariton density in the second lower polariton branch., Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1607.03530

The optical spin Hall effect (OSHE) is a transport phenomenon of exciton polaritons in semiconductor microcavities, caused by the polaritonic spin-orbit interaction, that leads to the formation of spin textures. In the semiconductor cavity, the physical basis of the spin orbit coupling is an effective magnetic field caused by the splitting of transverse-electric and transverse-magnetic (TE-TM) modes. The spin textures can be observed in the near field (local spin distribution of polaritons), and as light polarization patterns in the more readily observable far field. For future applications in spinoptronic devices, a simple and robust control mechanism, which establishes a one-to-one correspondence between stationary incident light intensity and far-field polarization pattern, is needed. We present such a control scheme, which is made possible by a specific double-microcavity design.

Recent time-resolved differential transmission and Faraday rotation measurements of long-lived electron spin coherence in quantum wells displayed intriguing parametric dependencies. For their understanding we formulate a microscopic theory of the optical response of a gas of optically incoherent excitons whose constituent electrons retain spin coherence, under a weak magnetic field applied in the quantum well's plane. We define a spin beat susceptibility and evaluate it in linear order of the exciton density. Our results explain the many-body physics underlying the basic features observed in the experimental measurements.

We present an $sp^3$ tight-binding model for the calculation of the electronic and optical properties of wurtzite semiconductor quantum dots (QDs). The tight-binding model takes into account strain, piezoelectricity, spin-orbit coupling and crystal-field splitting. Excitonic absorption spectra are calculated using the configuration interaction scheme. Using a microscopic many-particle theory, we propose all-optical switching in planar semiconductor microcavities where a weak beam switches a stronger signal. Based on four-wave-mixing instabilities, the general scheme is a semiconductor adaptation of a recently demonstrated switch in an atomic vapor [Dawes et al., Science 308, 672 (2005)].

Based on a microscopic many-particle theory we study the amplification of polaritons in a multiple-quantum-well resonant photonic crystal. For the Bragg-spaced multiple quantum wells under investigation we predict that in a typical pump-probe setup four-wave mixing processes can lead to an unstable energy transfer from the pump into the probe and the background-free four-wave mixing directions. We find that under certain excitation conditions this phase-conjugate oscillation induced instability can lead to a large amplification of the weak probe pulse.

Based on a microscopic many-particle theory we investigate the influence of excitonic correlations on the vectorial polarization state characteristics of the parametric amplification of polaritons in semiconductor microcavities. We study a microcavity with perfect in-plane isotropy. A linear stability analysis of the cavity polariton dynamics shows that in the co-linear (TE-TE or TM-TM) pump-probe polarization state configuration, excitonic correlations diminish the parametric scattering process whereas it is enhanced by excitonic correlations in the cross-linear (TE-TM or TM-TE) configuration. Without any free parameters, our microscopic theory gives a quantitative understanding how many-particle effects can lead to a rotation or change of the outgoing (amplified) probe signal's vectorial polarization state relative to the incoming one's.

Based on a microscopic many-particle theory, we predict large optical gain in the probe and background-free four-wave mixing directions caused by excitonic instabilities in semiconductor quantum wells. For a single quantum well with radiative-decay limited dephasing in a typical pump-probe setup we discuss the microscopic driving mechanisms and polarization and frequency dependence of these instabilities.

The electronic and optical properties of self-assembled InN/GaN quantum dots (QDs) are investigated by means of a tight-binding model combined with configuration interaction calculations. Tight-binding single particle wave functions are used as a basis for computing Coulomb and dipole matrix elements. Within this framework, we analyze multi-exciton emission spectra for two different sizes of a lens-shaped InN/GaN QD with wurtzite crystal structure. The impact of the symmetry of the involved electron and hole one-particle states on the optical spectra is discussed in detail. Furthermore we show how the characteristic features of the spectra can be interpreted using a simplified Hamiltonian which provides analytical results for the interacting multi-exciton complexes. We predict a vanishing exciton and biexciton ground state emission for small lens-shaped InN/GaN QDs. For larger systems we report a bright ground state emission but with drastically reduced oscillator strengths caused by the quantum confined Stark effect., Comment: 15 pages, 17 figures

In this work we investigate the electronic and optical properties of self-assembled InN/GaN quantum dots. The one-particle states of the low-dimensional heterostructures are provided by a tight-binding model that fully includes the wurtzite crystal structure on an atomistic level. Optical dipole and Coulomb matrix elements are calculated from these one-particle wave functions and serve as an input for full configuration interaction calculations. We present multi-exciton emission spectra and discuss in detail how Coulomb correlations and oscillator strengths are changed by the piezoelectric fields present in the structure. Vanishing exciton and biexciton ground state emission for small lens-shaped dots is predicted., Comment: 3 pages, 2 figures

The influence of coherent optical nonlinearities on polariton propagation effects is studied within a theory-experiment comparison. A novel approach that combines a microscopic treatment of the boundary problem in a sample of finite thickness with excitonic and biexcitonic nonlinearities is introduced. Light-polarization dependent spectral changes are analyzed for single-pulse transmission and pump-probe excitation.
