With anthropogenic climate change acting as the overarching backdrop and a specific climate adaptation project as the focal point, this thesis will explore perceptions of climate resilience as objects of inquiry and local subjective understanding. By means of ethnographic methods, it will draw attention to the ways in which they present themselves locally surrounding Karens Minde Aksen, a climate adaptation project currently unfolding in the Copenhagen neighborhood of Sydhavn. Employing the theoretical concepts of liminality, sense of place, and imaginaries, it will unfold the temporal and relational qualities embedded in these perceptions. The presented findings will demonstrate that there is much to learn from grounding the somewhat abstracted term of resilience in contextual understandings as it embodies narratives relating to the past, present, and future on local and global scales.

The COVID-19 pandemic has immensely impacted people’s everyday lives in different spheres, especially regarding the two domains of home and work. This thesis investigates people's experiences and how they have managed spatial and temporal changes at home during the pandemic. I conducted a qualitative study to uncover the spatial and temporal changes in people's lives and homes when work invaded their homes. I employed online ethnographic methods to comply with the safety measures - mine and my participants. The empirical data comprises pictures and videos shared by participants and in-depth interviews conducted via Zoom. The participants live in different countries, and, in common, they are all office workers who have been working remotely from home due to the pandemic. Most interviews were conducted in March and April 2021, when the participants were still working from home, in this way the dataset enables access to a frame of their reflections on that ongoing situation. Many companies have adopted remote work from home worldwide to comply with safety measures such as social distancing. In this context, where a shift from working from the office to working from home happened, the two cultural domains home and work invariably merged, public and private domains became blurred and temporal experiences have changed. I show that people might use different strategies to manage these changes. Some participants set clear spatial and temporal boundaries to keep the realms segmented, while others have the boundaries more permeable, then realms more integrated. It was also shown that people might rely on different strategies to manage privacy when home life is exposed through the cameras, and impression management is one of them. Moreover, it is argued that one way to comply with the temporal changes was taking advantage of the flexibility provided by this workstyle to attempt to keep a work-life balance amid such a challenging situation.

This thesis presents an exercise in looking at the relationship between people and space as a continually unfolding story. Through the application of a ‘dwelling perspective’ in an ethnographic research project among Copenhagen apartment-dwellers during the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic, the project explores how people keep life at home going under emergent and changing circumstances in the landscapes of their everyday. It proposes that dwelling can be understood as a specific form of making: making things work. This is supported by an analysis of the processes of appropriation, migration and accommodation that dwellers are engaged in while they make do. From this analysis, a brief discussion follows on the improvisational nature of dwelling, which establishes an understanding of how dwelling is really living through a present.

This thesis investigates the issue of collective activism in the urban environment, examining the process of constituting and maintaining the urban movement in the city, and negotiations taken by its members aiming at delivering the urban change. As the urban change can be defined through social and spatial structures of the city, this paper takes a critical stance on spatial dimension, with the aim of contributing to the discussion on which role is more effective: urban activist or urban city councillor.The investigated case is a local urban movement - Ludzie Dla Miasta - from medium size Polish city Gorzów. The group and the city in question are called the symbols of Polish urban movements due to their successful results in municipality elections, when they introduced a number of members to the city council and their candidate became a city mayor.The research included an ethnographic study and qualitative data collection, combining interviewing, personal experience and secondary sources. The data reveals unknown insights, challenges and problems of urban collective which are later analysed through a theoretical framework built upon concepts by Lefebvre, Harvey, Wallis, Melucci and Castells among others.The main finding of the analysis affirms that the spatial sub-structure of the city serves as an origin for the constitution of the urban movement. Initially, it delivers elements of individual identity for future activists. Later it reinforces their collective identity in a struggle with political apparatus. The spatial aspect of the city serves as a motivation and field of goals. Additionally, the decision of joining the political apparatus is destructible for the urban movement that did not develop enough structures to support their members in the city government.

Copenhagen, a city worldwide known for its high rates of cycling is currently seeing a shift in the use of its bike lanes. E-scooters, food couriers, tourists, and the increased motorization of cargo-bikes among other technologies are now commonly seen across the city’s vast cycle network or cyclescape. How the existing cycle culture responds to this influx of new technologies and bike lane users is what is investigated within this thesis. This is done through four concepts: choreography, human infrastructure, obduracy, and affective fields. Ultimately, cycling in Copenhagen is an obdurate sociotechnical artifact aided by a variety of contributing factors. These new technologies also create a variety of affective fields, which varies by technology and intensity.

An exploratory study of the metamorphosis of the traditional library space into its modern expression. Through ethnographic and netnographic practices, this thesis examines how the uses and experiences of public libraries in Copenhagen have changed with the library’s development into becoming a place for patrons as opposed to collections: space for collaboration, meetings, and individual contemplation; and space for leisure activities and cultural events. The library is no longer just a building that preserves collections, but a civilizing palace - rich in inspiration, learning, recreation and culture. These new uses and experiences reshaped libraries as places that reflect their local modern conditions.
