10. Strain control of composite superconductors to prevent degradation of superconducting magnets due to a quench: I. Ag/Bi2Sr2CaCu2Ox multifilament round wires

Abstract

The critical current of many practical superconductors is sensitive to strain, and this sensitivity is exacerbated during a quench that induces a peak local strain which can be fatal to superconducting magnets. Here, a new method is introduced to quantify the influence of the conductor stress and strain state during normal operation on the margin to degradation during a quench, as measured by the maximum allowable hot spot temperature T allowable, for composite wires within superconducting magnets. The first conductor examined is Ag-sheathed Bi2Sr2CaCu2Ox round wire carrying high engineering critical current density, J E, of 550 A mm-2 at 4.2 K and 15 T. The critical axial tensile stress of this conductor is determined to be 150 MPa and, in the absence of Lorentz forces, T allowable is greater than 450 K. With increasing axial tensile stress, σ a, however, T allowable decreases nonlinearly, dropping to 280 K for σ a = 120 MPa and to 160 K for σ a = 145 MPa. T allowable(σ a) is shown to be nonlinear and independent of magnetic field from 15 to 30 T. T allowable(σ a) dictates the balance between magnetic field generation, which increases with the magnet operating current and stress, and the safety margin, which decreases with decreasing T allowable, and therefore has important engineering value. It is also shown that T allowable(σ a) can be predicted accurately by a general strain model, showing that strain control is the key to preventing degradation of superconductors during a quench.

Abstract

We report measurements of the anisotropy of the spin echo decay for the inner layer Cu site of the triple layer cuprate, Hg_0.8Re_0.2Ba_2Ca_2Cu_3O_8 (T_c=126 K) in the pseudogap T regime below T_pg ~ 170 K and the corresponding analysis for their interpretation. As the field alignment is varied, the shape of the decay curve changes from Gaussian (H_0 \parallel c) to single exponential (H_0 \perp c). The latter characterizes the decay caused by the fluctuations of adjacent Cu nuclear spins caused by their interactions with electron spins. The angular dependence of the second moment (T_{2M}^{-2} \equiv <\Delta \omega^2>) deduced from the decay curves indicates that T_{2M}^{-2} for H_0 \parallel c, which is identical to T_{2G}^{-2} (T_{2G} is the Gaussian component), is substantially enhanced, as seen in the pseudogap regime of the bilayer systems. Comparison of T_{2M}^{-2} between H_0 \parallel c and H_0 \perp c indicates that this enhancement is caused by electron spin correlations between the inner and the outer CuO_2 layers. These results provide the answer to the long-standing controversy regarding the opposite T dependences of (T_1T)^{-1} and T_{2G}^{-2} in the pseudogap regime of bi- and trilayer systems., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Detect, Practice, Repair Multiplication Fact Fluency Intervention for Middle School Students Identified with Learning Disabilities Justin Lee Schwartz, EdD University of Pittsburgh, 2023 This research study sought to identify a solution for building fact fluency for middle school aged students identified with LD. After analyzing a 1st – 12th grade independent school for students with LD’s math curriculum, it was noted that basic fact fluency is not taught after grade five. This has shown to be problematic for students who enroll in the school in the later elementary school years or even in middle or high school who do not receive the needed fact fluency practice to become fully fluent in basic math facts. Therefore, it was decided to use a multiple probe design, consisting of baseline, intervention, and maintenance phases with staggered onset to examine the effects of Detect, Practice, Repair (DPR) on single-digit multiplication fact fluency for six identified sixth graders with LD. Fluency growth for each participant was tracked, as well as fluency maintenance once criterion was reached. The Detect stage utilized Xtra Math to create three distinct sets of multiplication facts (Set A, Set B, and Set C), ten problems each, made up of five unknown facts and five non-fluent known facts for each participant. Students worked through the Practice and Repair phases for one set at a time until criterion was reached, then moving onto the next set of facts. Results showed that five of the six participants successfully reached criterion for Set A, three of the six participants reached criterion for Set B, and one participant reached criterion for Set C, suggesting that DPR positively impacted fluency growth. However, fluency maintenance was not achieved for the majority of the participants. These findings help extend the research for fact fluency intervention for middle school aged students, as well as students identified with LD.
