A subnanosecond breakdown in high-voltage pulse discharge is studied in experiment and in kinetic simulations for mid-high pressure in helium. It is shown that the characteristic time of the current growth can be controlled by the secondary electron emission. We test the influence of secondary electron yield on plasma parameters for three types of cathodes made from titanium, silicon carbide and CuAlMg-alloy. By changing the pulse voltage amplitude and gas pressure, the area of existence of subnanosecond breakdown is identified., Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures

Parameters of a high frequency capacitive discharge in argon in axially symmetric chambers of different geometries are studied in experiments and by means of two-dimensional kinetic modeling by the Particle-in-Cell method. It is demonstrated that a change in the ratio of the areas of the driven and grounded electrodes can substantially increase the ion energy on the electrode practically without disturbing the plasma parameters. Particular attention is paid to studying the self-bias voltage and the ion distribution function on the electrode for gas pressures ranging from 15 to 70 mTorr. We study the properties of a capacitive 13.56 MHz discharge properties with a mixture of Ar/C2H2 taking into account the plasmochemistry and growth of heavy hydrocarbons. A hybrid model was developed to combine the kinetic description for electron motion and the fluid approach for negative and positive ions transport and plasmochemical processes. A significant change of plasma parameters related to injection of 5.8% portion of acetylene in argon was observed and analyzed. We found that the electronegativity of the mixture is about 30%. The densities of negatively and positively charged heavy hydrocarbons are sufficiently large to be precursors for the formation of nanoparticles in the discharge volume., Comment: 11 pages, 14 figures

Two-dimensional capacitively coupled radio frequency discharge in methane is simulated by PIC-MCC method. The results were obtained in pressure range 50-300 mTorr and voltage range 40-180 V for discharge frequency 13.56 MHz. The electron energy and electron--methane reaction rates spatial distributions show existence of two regimes of discharge glow: a) with active sheaths, when electrons are hot in electrode sheaths and cold in the middle of discharge so the electron-neutral reactions strongly dominate in sheaths regions; b) with volume domination, when the electron energy is more uniform and the reactions take place in all discharge volume. The second regime is usually observed for low discharge voltages, and turns to the first one with voltage increasing. Besides, simulation of chemical reactions in methane plasma was also fulfilled to find the gas mixture composition in discharge volume. We studied the structural, dynamical properties and melting of a quasi-one-dimensional system of charged particles, interacting through a screened Coulomb potential. The ground state energy was calculated and, depending on the density and the screening length, the system crystallizes in a number of chains. As a function of the density (or the confining potential), the ground state configurations and the structural transitions between them were analyzed both by analytical and Monte Carlo calculations. The system exhibits a rich phase diagram at zero temperature with continuous and discontinuous structural transitions. We calculated the normal modes of the Wigner crystal and the magneto-phonons when an external constant magnetic field $B$ is applied. At finite temperature the melting of the system was studied via Monte Carlo simulations using the $modified$ $Lindemann$ $criterion$ (MLC). The melting temperature as a function of the density was obtained for different screening parameters. Reentrant melting as a function of the density was found as well as evidence of directional dependent melting. The single chain regime exhibits anomalous melting temperatures according to the MLC and as a check we study the pair correlation function at different densities and different temperatures, formulating a different criterion. A new combined PIC-MCC approach is developed for accurate and fast simulation of a radio frequency discharge at low gas pressure and high density of plasma. Test calculations of transition between different modes of electron heating in a ccrf discharge in helium and argon show a good agreement with experimental data. We demonstrate high efficiency of the combined PIC-MCC algorithm, especially for the collisionless regime of electron heating., Comment: 6 paged, 8 figures

Melting of two dimensional (2D) clusters of classical particles is studied using Brownian dynamics and Langevin molecular dynamics simulations. The particles are confined by a circular hard wall or a parabolic external potential and interact through a dipole or a screened Coulomb potential. We found that with decreasing strength of the inter--particle interaction clusters with short-range inter-particle interaction which are confined by a hard wall exhibit a re-entrant behavior in its orientational order., Comment: 4 pages, 8 figures

The stability and melting transition of a single layer and a bilayer crystal consisting of charged particles interacting through a Coulomb or a screened Coulomb potential is studied using the Monte-Carlo technique. A new melting criterion is formulated which we show to be universal for bilayer as well as for single layer crystals in the case of (screened) Coulomb, Lennard--Jones and 1/r^{12} repulsive inter-particle interactions. The melting temperature for the five different lattice structures of the bilayer Wigner crystal is obtained, and a phase diagram is constructed as a function of the interlayer distance. We found the surprising result that the square lattice has a substantial larger melting temperature as compared to the other lattice structures. This is a consequence of the specific topology of the defects which are created with increasing temperature and which have a larger energy as compared to the defects in e.g. a hexagonal lattice., Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review B
