The present study examines the language- and culture-learning perceptions of domestic and international students from a Canadian university who participated in an intensive four-week-long Spanish language and cultural immersion program in Spain. The study draws on quantitative and qualitative data to explore the ways in which the participants' previous international, language learning experiences influenced their acculturation in Spain. A language history questionnaire, a language contact profile, and an open-ended questionnaire offered insight into the participants' experience abroad, their perceptions of language and intercultural learning, and their identified cultural representations on which they drew to make sense of the new environment. We review key findings and offer suggestions for the enhancement of study abroad programs of this nature.

For second language learners, an international experience can have positive effects on language learning and intercultural development even when participating in a program of relatively short duration. One issue which has not yet received attention is the potential impact that the study abroad experience may have on social participation and position as perceived by the learners themselves. The present study draws on post-structural views of second language acquisition and positioning theory to qualitatively analyze these issues among language learners who were currently studying abroad. Thirteen students from a Canadian university participated in a four-week language immersion experience in Spain. On Day 1, the participants were asked to give their informal definitions of "social participation" and "social positioning" and on Day 2, were asked to submit more formal definitions of these issues after having researched them on their own. On the last day abroad, the participants re-read their Day 2 responses and answered open-ended questions in which they reflected on how these social participation and positioning may be affected as a result of the study abroad experience. The discussion of the findings provides implications for study abroad programming and directions for future research.

In this paper, we explore the importance of being conscious of the needs of indigenous students within the education system in order to increase their learning process and decrease their dropout rates. Specifically, we discuss how Mayan language, culture, and ideologies affect the educational outcome of Mayan students in mainstream classes in Guatemalan schools. From this discussion, we highlight the impact that these factors have on both teacher training and the education of the indigenous student population. A simple "teaching to learn--learning to teach" model is explained which discusses the importance of multilingual and multicultural aspects of teacher training and real-life implications in the indigenous student learning process.

English-speaking learners of L2 Spanish who were taking part in a four-week study abroad program in Spain and Japanese-speaking learners of L2 English who were individually studying in year-long abroad experiences participated in the present study. Quantitative and qualitative data from language questionnaires and contact profiles along with open-ended responses revealed details on learners' engagement with and use of their languages while abroad. We discuss the findings and their implications for programs, educators and learners.

The relationship between language switching and task switching has been well studied in bilingualism literature. This study employs novel experiments involving magnitude-parity switching and transparency-orientation switching and compares the costs associated with these two types of task switching with language switching. Switching costs and the reduction in switching costs (RISC) effect were used as indices of inhibitory control and preparatory control, respectively. The results from Experiment 1 revealed strong positive correlations for all three types of switching, with language switching being less costly than magnitude-parity and transparency-orientation switching. In Experiment 2, we increased the cue-stimulus interval and again found significant or marginally positive relations between the three switching costs. The RISC effect emerged in magnitude-parity and transparency-orientation switching but not in language switching. In Experiment 3, the experimental blocks included both language switching and either magnitude-parity or transparency-orientation switching. Language switching costs were significantly greater than but no longer positively correlated with magnitude-parity switching or transparency-orientation switching costs. Together, these results suggest that more inhibitory control (in Experiments 1 and 3) and less preparatory control (in Experiment 2) in language switching is required compared to magnitude-parity and transparency-orientation switching. In this behavioral and electrophysiological study, we compare novel word learning, particularly lexical form acquisition, in an immersive virtual reality (VR) context with a picture-word (PW) association context. We also test whether inhibitory control and age of second language acquisition (L2 AoA) have modulating effects. Chinese speakers of L2 English learned two sets of German words, one set in each of the contexts. Behavioral performance from a subsequent recognition task indicated that responses to VR-learned words were faster than PW-leaned words. ERPs revealed that VR-learned words elicited more negative N100 and N200 waveforms than PW-learned words. Moreover, a significant relationship between L2 AoA and N200 amplitude was observed for VR-learned words. Taken together, the results suggest that the multi-sensory, interactive experience simulated by an immersive VR context has a positive effect on early lexical form acquisition of novel words.
