Abstract

High-precision measurements of the proton radius from laser spectroscopy of muonic hydrogen demonstrated up to six standard deviations smaller values than obtained from electron-proton scattering and hydrogen spectroscopy. Abstract

We experimentally demonstrate the control of the spontaneous emission rate and the radiation pattern of colloidal quantum dots deterministically positioned in a plasmonic patch antenna. The antenna consists of a thin gold microdisk 30 nm above a thick gold layer. The emitters are shown to radiate through the entire patch antenna in a highly directional and vertical radiation pattern. Strong acceleration of spontaneous emission is observed, depending of the antenna size. Considering the double dipole structure of the emitters, this corresponds to a Purcell factor up to 80 for dipoles perpendicular to the disk.

Abstract

Metastable ${2S}$ muonic-hydrogen atoms undergo collisional ${2S}$-quenching, with rates which depend strongly on whether the $\mu p$ kinetic energy is above or below the ${2S}\to {2P}$ energy threshold. Above threshold, collisional ${2S} \to {2P}$ excitation followed by fast radiative ${2P} \to {1S}$ deexcitation is allowed. The corresponding short-lived $\mu p ({2S})$ component was measured at 0.6 hPa $\mathrm{H}_2$ room temperature gas pressure, with lifetime $\tau_{2S}^\mathrm{short} = 165 ^{+38}_{-29}$ ns (i.e., $\lambda_{2S}^\mathrm{quench} = 7.9 ^{+1.8}_{-1.6} \times 10^{12} \mathrm{s}^{-1}$ at liquid-hydrogen density) and population $\epsilon_{2S}^\mathrm{short} = 1.70^{+0.80}_{-0.56}$ % (per $\mu p$ atom). In addition, a value of the $\mu p$ cascade time, $T_\mathrm{cas}^{\mu p} = (37\pm5)$ ns, was found., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

International audience; Manipulation of the emission of nanocrystals embedded in photonic crystals can pro-vide single photon source for quantum information.Artificial opals are 3D photonic crystals whose synthesis is based on self-assembly of dielectricspheres. This cost-efficient and versatile method does not require a high technological platform andleads to nanostructured samples over cm range. In order to obtain light confinement inside opals,several fabrication methods have been used to create a defect. Artificial opals with a planar defectcan be considered as a good ”model system” to study the modification of the optical properties ofnanoemitters in a photonic crystal.We will present two efficient and reliable methods to engineer a defect between two silica opals:by sputtering a controlled amount of silica or by the transfer of a monolayer of silica spheres ofdifferent diameter by the Langmuir-Blodgett or Schaefer technique. The optical properties of theprepared samples were characterized by transmission and specular reflection spectra. Tunable andhighly transmitted and reflected optical modes were evidenced, in good agreement with FiniteDifference Time Domain simulations (FDTD).Colloidal II-VI nanocrystals are efficient and stable emitters which can emit single photons. Thesenanoemitters were introduced in the defect. The collected fluorescence of these nanocrystalspresents an emission diagram which is modified by the photonic crystal and especially by thedefect layer.

In addition, a value of the µp cascade time, T casmu p=(37±5) ns, was found.
