- Abstract
Objective: To describe the scientific production, through bibliometric analysis, about asthma in Latin America. Methods: Observational, descriptive, retrospective and cross-sectional study, with a quantitative bibliometric approach, to evaluate the scientific production of asthma in Latin America, using the Scopus and SciELO platforms to recover files published between 2003 and 2022. Results: A totoal of 3041 documents were obtained in Scopus and 592 in SciELO. In both repositories, the original articles (2379 and 478) and the reviews (379 and 43) were the most published documents. The largest producer was Brasil: n = 1538 in Scopus, and n = 406 in SciELO, and the journal with the highest number of publications was Jornal Brasileiro de Pneumologia with 169 articles in Scopus and 164 articles in SciELO. Conclusion: The bibliometric analysis shows the panorama of the last 20 years in research on asthma in Latin America, where scientific production has progressively increased, mainly in Brazil, Mexico and Chile. OPEN scholarship , *INFORMATION sharing , *DISCLOSURE , *CONFLICT of interests - Abstract
This study empirically examined the promotion and implementation of open science measures among high‐performing journals of Brazil, Mexico, Portugal, and Spain. Journal policy related to data sharing, materials sharing, preregistration, open peer review, and consideration of preprints and replication studies was gathered from the websites of the journals. Four hundred articles were coded for the inclusion of data availability statements, conflict of interest disclosures, funding disclosures, DOI, ORCID, and continuous publishing. Analyses found a higher promotion of open science measures among Brazilian journals than their Portuguese counterparts, and higher promotion of open science measures among international journals than their domestic counterparts. Analyses found higher implementation of open science measures among Brazilian journals than their Portuguese and Mexican counterparts. One journal out of 40 encouraged preregistration of studies; none encouraged replication studies and none had implemented open peer review. These findings reveal reasonably strong implementation of secondary open science measures (e.g., DOI, ORCID, conflict of interest and funding source disclosure) among the sample, but weaker implementation of primary measures (e.g., open data, open materials, replication studies and open peer review). The implications of these findings are considered and suggestions are made to bolster the adoption of open science measures among Ibero‐American scientific journals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background:The university social responsibility (USR) goes beyond the traditional extension and solidary social projection of the universities, but the professional must improve and develop proposals in improvement of the country. The objective is to carry out a systematic review of the scientific production related to USR in Peru and to analyse the most important findings of this production. Method: A systematic review of articles in English and Spanish in Scopus, Redalyc, and SciELO was carried out, searching for research related to USR in the Peruvian context. Articles on USR in Latin America or the world were excluded. The search and filtering of articles was carried out until February 2023. Several filters were applied, starting with the search for titles according to the search equation. Then, articles that did not deal with USR were eliminated. Subsequently, abstracts were read and those that did not meet the inclusion criteria were discarded. Finally, the remaining research was analysed to obtain the necessary information for the research. Results: A total of 20 articles were analysed. The main results showed that university social responsibility in the Peruvian context seeks to benefit society and to form ethical and responsible students. However, more policies and actions are needed to encourage the participation of all universities in USR. It was found that 65% of the literature had a quantitative approach, 30% was qualitative and only 5% was mixed. Conclusion: University Social Responsibility (USR) seeks to benefit society, being students the key actors to improve their country with the professional development acquired in higher institutions. The implication for future research is to carry out more studies on USR but within the national university centres in the highlands and jungle areas of Peru, where it is possible to show the state of this topic in other areas of Peru.

BIOETHICS , *RESEARCH protocols , *MEDICAL personnel , *MENTAL health , *ETHICAL problems , *SYNDEMICS - Abstract
Objective: Bioethics has gained increasing theoretical and practical relevance in our time, especially in light of the challenging event of COVID-19 for public health. This study aims to analyze the pandemic's impact on mental health. Through a qualitative review methodology, a bioethical evaluation of research protocols related to coronavirus and/or COVID-19 approved by CONEP will be conducted. This analysis extends to their reflection in publications registered on the Scielo platform, whether or not they are linked to the approved research protocols by CONEP, along with their respective descriptions (or lack thereof) of the risks for participants involved in the research. Furthermore, the contribution of the field of bioethics to this research scenario will be assessed. Conclusion: It is observed that there is still limited production of empirical studies involving the descriptors "mental health" and "COVID-19". Studies that incorporate bioethics as one of the analytical categories are even scarcer. This, however, does not align with the nature of the moral dilemmas that the syndemic of COVID-19 has brought to healthcare professionals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SciELO promotes open access and cooperative publication of scholarly journals, based mainly in Latin America, the Caribbean, Spain and Portugal. SciELO was created to offer solutions to increase the visibility of participating journals and facilitate free access to their full texts. This work aims to analyse the open access editorial policies implemented by the health sciences journals of the SciELO network (411 journals at the time of this study) in terms of authors' rights, copyright issues, self-archiving policies and openness. From SciELO health sciences journals network, 92% of the 411 journals use a Creative Commons licence, 89% require transfer of author copyright and 14% apply author processing charges. According to the past SHERPA/RoMEO taxonomy of self-archiving policies, 8.5% of the journals were classified as white, 81.5% blue and 10% green. The openness of journals calculated through the Open Access Spectrum approach was higher than 60% in more than 80% of the total journals. Out of the 411 journals in SciELO portals, 380 have their own website. Discrepancies were found between licences stated in SciELO compared with the ones used in their websites, mainly due to the lack of declared licences in either of the two sources or because the licences did not match. The licences used on the websites and in SciELO were also compared with their corresponding records in the Directory of Open Access Journals and Crossref, and again the differences were narrowly related to the data supplier.

- Abstract
Different types of collaboration (formal e informal) are necessary in the scientific activity of different disciplines and areas. Through scientometric indicators, it broadly analyzes contemporary collaborative practices (coauthorship and sub-authorship) in publications of two important Brazilian journals indexed at SciELO, one from Biological Sciences and other from Human Sciences, during the period of 2010 to 2019. The data on co-authorship were collected from papers signed by more than one author, and the data on subauthorship were collected from publications acknowledgment texts (for material and/or intellectual support) written by the authors. The corpus is composed of 1,100 papers, 758 from Acta Botanica Brasilica and 342 from Revista de Sociologia e Política. It found out that scientific communication context (nationality of the journal and of the indexing database) does not directly influence the collaborative practices, but what does influence is the nature of the research performed in each of the disciplines and areas. High percentages of coauthorship and sub-authorship (financial and technical/instrumental support) identified in Acta Botanica Brasilica evidence the need for different types of collaboration (formal e informal) in experimental areas. The high percentage of acknowledgment for conceptual/PIC support identified in Revista de Sociologia e Política, whose co-authorship rates are lower than those of single authorship, shows the importance of authorship collaboration from invisible colleges. It concludes that the inclusion of databases such as SciELO in scientometric researches is relevant for mapping types of collaboration (authorial and nonauthorial) in science from a broadly and different perspective. The purpose of this paper is the bibliometric analysis of the journals indexed in SciELO in the area of teaching and learning English as a second language. The journals searched were: How, Profile, and Colombian Applied Linguistics Journal. The search for information made it possible to compare different bibliometric indicators. Although it is true that the results of this research show that scientific production in the field is abundant, varied in terms of thematic lines, and collaborative, it is only reported in three journals indexed in SciELO; however, other research that reports on the scientific production on the teaching of English as a second language, all the scientific production published in journals indexed in SciELO is made invisible. Since most of the publications in the journals studied are by Latin American authors, it is evident that in other productions the region's research in the field is being ignored.

Objetive. To carry out the sustainability analysis of the Latin American initiative Redalyc.org, based on two fundamental aspects, the economic and the need for its existence. Method. the measurement of the man-hours required to publish a scientific article is carried out, using Marcalyc. 40 articles published in scientific journals from different areas of knowledge, belonging to Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Venezuela, are processed using this tool. Results. it is obtained that the markup takes on average 86.3% (SD = 4.2%) of the total processing time, distributed in almost equal parts between the content of the article (body) (average = 48.3%, SD = 9.5%) and references, notes, acknowledgement, appendix and glossary (back) (mean = 43.2%, SD = 9.3%). Conclusions. The sustainability of Redalyc's publication model is more economically guaranteed for two reasons; 1) the processing time to generate XML-JATS is much shorter than SciELO, and 2) it uses a markup tool (Marcalyc), which can be used directly by the editorial team of a journal, without the need for specialized technical knowledge. This favors the sustainability of the scientific publication model in Latin American open access and returns the control of the publication process to the editors.

= This article analyzes bibliometric indicators of the journals indexed in SciELO belonging to the area of agricultural sciences for the year 2019 and their relationship with indicators of agricultural development in the region. The bibliometric data were obtained from the official SciELO portal and the agricultural development data were obtained from the World Bank portal. The data were processed using statistical techniques of association by clusters to observe similarities or differences between the indicators by country. The relationships between the indicators were established through analysis of canonical correlations and classification trees. The cluster analysis showed that the countries are grouped according to bibliometric indicators in five clusters where Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Colombia are independent and Bolivia, Paraguay, Peru and Venezuela are grouped in a single cluster. As for agricultural development indicators, there are four clusters with Bolivia and Paraguay located independently, Argentina and Venezuela in one cluster and Brazil, Chile, Colombia and Peru in another cluster. There was little relationship between bibliometric indicators and agricultural development indicators, with a predominance of moderate inverse relationships with industrialization and agricultural value added (%GDP).

This paper aims to discuss the use of the term "language of science", placing scientific production in Spanish at the center of the debate in the context of Spanish-speaking countries. We seek to answer three questions that help to problematize the use of the term in question, skewed to English, showing that Spanish can also be considered a language of science. This work is located in the field of Language Policy and Planning in Science and Higher Education (Planejamento linguístico na Ciência e Educação Superior - PPLICES), in dialogue with bibliometric information obtained from the Scielo database, which has proved to be an effective tool, however not totalizing, to assess the production, use and quality of the regional scientific publication. Based on the information presented, we found that the Spanish language dominates scientific production in Spanish-speaking countries and that these, in turn, reproduce asymmetries, showing the formation of "peripheral centers" (BEIGEL, 2016) with a high index of publication. The importance of studying scientific production in the health area is valuable, since the publication of journals in the Latin American region allows measuring and assessing the regional scientific effort, as well as identifying the most active nuclei of production. From a bibliometric, observational, cross-sectional and descriptive study, based on records from the SciELO database, period 2006 -2015, it was found that Brazil stands out as the main country in scientific production in health, with a participation of 58.55 % compared to the total, followed by Cuba and Colombia with 10.52 and 8.30 %, respectively. Likewise, Chile, Argentina, Venezuela, Peru and Uruguay contribute to the production of publications in a proportion of 1.03 % and 6.09 %; meanwhile, Costa Rica, Bolivia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Guatemala, Panama, El Salvador, Honduras, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico have a share below 1.00 % of the total for the region. There are three countries with the highest levels of scientific production (Brazil, Cuba and Colombia) that contribute 77.57 % of the total of publications made, the rest of 17 of the 20 Latin American countries studied contribute 22.63 % of the total scientific production.

This article analyzes bibliometric indicators of the journals indexed in SciELO belonging to the area of agricultural sciences for the year 2019 and their relationship with indicators of agricultural development in the region. The bibliometric data were obtained from the official SciELO website and the agricultural development data were obtained from the World Bank website.

Abstract English is the lingua franca for scientific communication, but some journals, especially in developing countries, still publish non-English studies. A shift towards publishing in English may promote internationalization and more visibility of scientific journals. Here we compared quality indexes between Brazilian journals that have always published in English and journals that have published in languages other than English. We also investigated whether a temporal shift towards publishing in English led to elevated quality measures. Our analyses covered 16 Brazilian biodiversity journals and accounted for 12640 papers published since 2007. The mean impact factor was on average 55% higher in journals that have published consistently in English, compared to the so-called multilanguage journals. The proportion of publications in English increased to nearly three times the original value in multilanguage journals between 2007 and 2016, and the impact factor tripled during this period. At the same time, the Qualis-Capes classifications (B1-B2-B3) tended to fall. Publishing in English can be a first step to increased visibility, and this is particularly important for biodiversity journals, since Brazilian ecosystems are considered of interest to the international scientific community and nature conservation.

- Abstract
The goal for Revista Cartográfica to publish a minimum of 45 articles per year has been raised in order to be considered to enter the SciELO catalog. To assess the feasibility of the objective, an estimate of the volume of scientific production of the Pan American Institute of Geography and History member countries in the area of Geographic Information Science has been attempted for the first time. A bibliometric analysis of the articles published in a representative set of international journals was performed, filtering those whose authors are from countries in the region. The US was excluded because of its high relative weight in this scientific area. The main conclusion is that the goal of capturing part of these works and thus more than duplicating the material published today in Revista Cartográfica seems difficult to achieve in the short term. It will be necessary to interest authors from outside the region, who typically first take into account the journal's categorization, a categorization that has not yet been achieved, thus forming a vicious circle of difficult solution. Subsidiarily, a country-discriminated analysis has been carried out that could be used in future works to identify active research groups and research lines in the region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article traces the almost twenty years of history of the SciELO Network and the Spanish Website of SciELO España. The model was developed by the Latin American and Caribbean Center for Collaborative Health Sciences Information (Bireme/PAHO/WHO), and specially realized to respond to the needs of scientific communication in the developing countries and particularly in Latin America and the Caribbean. SciELO offers visibility and universal access, contributing thus to the overcoming of the phenomenon known as ‘lost science’, and, at the same time, promoting the improvement of the quality of their magazines.

This scientometric study describes the central characteristics of the production on deliberative democracy present in highly qualified Brazilian academic journals and identifies the most relevant institutional poles, in order to outline this research field. By means of social network analysis (SNA), the study also aims at mapping relationships within the field to understand their structures and hierarchies. Our analytical corpus comprehends articles released between 2000 and 2016 in journals indexed on Scielo (Scientific Electronic Library Online). The main results are the quantitative growth of production over the analyzed period as well as the improvement of co-authorship pari passu that of empirical research; the geographical and institutional concentration; and, the distribution of production in different areas of knowledge, but with a preponderance of Political Science and low articulation between different disciplines. Objective: To investigate evidence on the use of social networks to collect data in scientific productions in the health area. Material and method: An integrative literature review from primary studies indexed in the SciELO, PubMed, LILACS, Scopus, and Web of Science platforms. Results: 16 scientific articles were selected, of which nine focused on the use of WhatsApp; five, on the use of Facebook; and two, on employing Twitter to collect data in scientific productions. Growth was noted on the number of investigations associated to the use of social networks, although an important paradigm still exists related to the use to generate scientific evidence, resulting in a still low number of investigations on this theme. Conclusions: The health area needs to approach evermore the development of research associated to social networks, given that this would enable a viable and rapid intervention in obtaining responses, besides being a low cost and very promising tool for data collection.
