This paper presents the design and implementation of a current controlled Rotor Flux Oriented PMSM for automotive steer-by-wire applications. The development of a realistic torque feedback reference is carried out by actual monitoring of a commercial vehicle. The paper shall discuss the torque dynamics of the PMSM drive with respect to position demands replicating a driver at the handwheel. This paper shall present the design, simulation and implementation of a sensorless observer for three-phase permanent magnet synchronous machines which can be used for automotive steer-by-wire applications. It shall be shown that the observer has sufficient bandwidth to track steering transients enabling the sensorless speed/position estimates to be used for backup in case of encoder failure. The sensorless method is based on a high frequency injection approach which estimates speed/position from machine saliencies. Simulation results for position, speed and current loops in a closed-loop sensorless mode are shown. The sensorless method is based on the tracking of saliencies by high frequency injection. This research was aimed at the development of a mathematical model in MATLAB which can be used to analyze the performance of different photovoltaic systems available on the Maltese market. The model uses data regarding the solar radiation patterns of the Maltese islands and technical specifications of the photovoltaic systems to estimate the energy output and economic feasibility of a particular system. This paper presents research done on the closed-loop control of the Doubly Fed Induction Machine (DFIM) applied to a Wind Energy Conversion System (WECS). Basic generator configurations used in wind energy systems, mainly fixed-speed and adjustable speed generators are discussed. A suitable Stator Flux Oriented (SFO) control topology for the DFIM is shown with which it is possible to control the stator active and reactive power. The control system designed was implemented on an experimental rig which emulates the behaviour of a practical WECS. A brief overview of sensorless algorithms is also presented; these algorithms are used to provide rotor speed/position estimates in the absence of a speed sensor. Seminar Poster; Sensorless control is a branch in power electronics which studies how machines can be controlled without the use of speed sensors such as encoders or tachogenerators. This project was aimed at the review and design of sensorless techniques to be applied on a variable speed Double Fed Induction Machine (DFIM) which is driven through a matrix converter. The angular speed and rotor angle estimates output from the sensorless block are used for Stator Field Orientation (SFO) vector control of the DFIM.
