The considerable effects that wind can have on estimates of mass eruption rates (MERs) in explosive eruptions based on volcanic plume height are well known but difficult to quantify rigorously. Many explicitly wind-affected plume models have the additional difficulty that they require the use of centerline heights of bent-over plumes, a parameter not easily obtained directly from observational data. We tested two such models by using the time series of varying plume heights and windspeeds of the 2010 eruption. The mapped fallout and photos taken during this eruption allow us to estimate the plume geometry and to empirically constrain input parameters for the two models tested. Two strategies are presented to correct the difference in maximum plume height and centerline height: (a) based on plume radius, and (b) by using the plume type parameter Π, which quantifies the relative influence of buoyancy and cross-wind on the plume dynamics, to discriminate weak, intermediate and strong plumes. The results indicate that it may be more appropriate to classify plumes as either wind-dominated, intermediate or buoyancy-dominated, where the relative effects of both wind and MER define the type. The analysis of the Eyjafjallajökull data shows that the MER estimates from both models are considerably improved when a plume-type dependent centerline-correction is applied. For one model, we varied the wind entrainment coefficient β. This study incorporates the structural and magnetic characterization of epitaxial Ni80Fe20 films grown by direct current magnetron sputtering on MgO(001) and MgO(001)||VN(001) substrates. A series of samples grown with different N2 flow settings for the deposition of VN and similar permalloy deposition parameters was utilized to investigate the effect of morphological evolution and buffer layer induced strain on the magnetic properties of Ni80Fe20. X-ray diffraction analysis reveals an epitaxial nature of the VN(001) and Py(001) films grown on MgO substrates. Angular dependent magneto-optical Kerr effect characterization reveals a cubic anisotropy for Ni80Fe20 on MgO with a coercivity of ∼0.8 Gauss along the easy directions. Incorporating an epitaxial VN buffer, the structures showed a transition from a cubic to isotropic magneto-crystalline anisotropy with coercivity varying from 2.5 to 25 Gauss for Ni80Fe20 deposition on VN (with N2 varying from 5 to 12 sccm). We provide a theoretical background for electric-field-assisted thermally activated writing and deleting of magnetic skyrmions in ultrathin transition-metal films. We apply an atomistic spin model, which includes the exchange interaction, the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, and the magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy. The strengths of the magnetic interactions are taken from density functional theory (DFT) calculations for a Pd/Fe bilayer on the Ir(111) surface. We systematically vary all magnetic interactions up to $\pm10$~\% reating the magnetoelectric effect in linear response. The critical magnetic fields marking the onset of the skyrmion phase and the field-polarized phase shift considerably upon varying the interaction constants due to the electric field. Based on harmonic transition state theory, we calculate the transition rates for skyrmion nucleation and annihilation, which are in good agreement with experimental values for Pd/Fe/Ir(111). The field-dependent variation of energy barriers and preexponential factors leads to large changes of the transition rates, which are accompanied by changes in skyrmion radii. Finally, we simulate the electric-field-dependent writing and deleting of magnetic skyrmions in Pd/Fe/Ir(111) based on the master equation and transition rates obtained using the magnetic interactions calculated via DFT for electric fields of ${\cal E}= \pm 0.5$~V/{\AA}. The magnetic-field-dependent skyrmion probability follows a Fermi-Dirac distribution function of the free energy difference of the skyrmion state and the ferromagnetic (FM) state. Publisher's version (útgefin grein), We adapt the complexity as action prescription (CA) to a semi-classical model of two-dimensional dilaton gravity and determine the rate of increase of holographic complexity for an evaporating black hole. The results are consistent with our previous numerical results for semi-classical black hole complexity using a volume prescription (CV) in the same model, but the CA calculation is fully analytic and provides a non-trivial positive test for the holographic representation of the black hole interior.

Controlled creation of localized magnetic textures beyond conventional π-skyrmions is an important problem in the field of magnetism. Here, by means of spin dynamics simulations, Monte Carlo simulations, and harmonic transition state theory we demonstrate that an elementary chiral magnetic soliton with zero topological charge—the chiral droplet—can be created by thermal fluctuations in the presence of the tilted magnetic field. The proposed protocol relies on an unusual kinetics combining the effects of the entropic stabilization and low-energy barrier for the nucleation of a topologically trivial state. Following this protocol by varying temperature and the tilt of the external magnetic field, one can selectively generate chiral droplets or π-skyrmions in a single system. ©2022 American Physical Society, It is demonstrated by means of the optimal control theory that the energy cost of the spin-orbit torque induced reversal of a nanomagnet with perpendicular anisotropy can be strongly reduced by proper shaping of both in-plane components of the current pulse. The time dependence of the optimal switching pulse that minimizes the energy cost associated with joule heating is derived analytically in terms of the required reversal time and material properties. The optimal reversal time providing a tradeoff between the switching speed and energy efficiency is obtained. Pre-print (óritrýnt handrit), Timescales of magma transfer and differentiation processes can be estimated when the magma differentiation mechanism is known. When conventional major and trace element analyses fail to distinguish between various processes of magma differentiation, isotope compositions can be useful. Lower Th isotope ratios in silicic relative to basaltic magmas at a given volcano could result from magma storage over a period of several tens of thousands of years, if the differentiation process was fractional crystallization alone, or from crustal anatexis on a much shorter timescale. Recently mapped bimodal tephra layers from Mt. Hekla, Iceland, confirm lower (230Th/232Th) and higher Th/U in silicic versus mafic magmas. Higher Th/U has been taken to indicate either apatite fractionation or partial crustal melting. In situ trace element analysis of apatite and the enveloping glass in basaltic andesite, dacite and rhyolite was undertaken to examine its capacity to fractionate trace elements and their ratios. Both Th and U are compatible in apatite with a partition coefficient ratio DU/DTh of 1. Hence, apatite crystallization and separation from the melt has a negligible effect on Th/U in Hekla magmas. Partial melting of hydrothermally altered crust remains the preferred mechanism for producing silicic melt beneath Hekla. Ten to twenty percent partial melting of metabasaltic crust with 0.4–1.2 wt% H2O produces dacite magma with 4–6% water. Absence of low δ18O values in Hekla magmas compared to silicic magmas of the rift zones suggests mild hydration of the hydrothermally altered crust. Silicic magma formation, storage, differentiation and eruption at Hekla occurred over a timescale of less than a few centuries. The atomic scale transitions corresponding to diffusion and interlayer transport of a Au adatom on the low energy, close packed Au(111) surface are studied using density functional theory calculations within the generalized gradient approximation. Minimum energy paths and estimates of activation energy are calculated for processes that influence whether the crystal grows layer-by-layer, i.e. 2D growth, or whether new islands tend to nucleate on top of existing islands resulting in 3D growth. Kinks on island edges turn out to provide paths for adatom descent with lower activation energy than straight steps. The energy barrier for an adatom to round the corner and enter a kink site is significantly higher. A descent mechanism that places an adatom near but not at a kink site can therefore promote the formation of a new row of step atoms and lead to the introduction of additional kink sites, thereby opening up new low activation energy paths for descent and promotion of 2D growth. The sites adjacent and above the step edge provide large binding energy for the adatom, especially at the B-type step, and form a trough along which the adatom can migrate before descending, thereby increasing the probability that an adatom finds a kink on the B-type step. Publisher's version (útgefin grein), Silicon nanowires (SiNWs) are known to exhibit a large piezoresistance (PZR) effect, making them suitable for various sensing applications. Here, we report the results of a PZR investigation on randomly distributed and interconnected vertical silicon nanowire arrays as a pressure sensor. The samples were produced from p-type (100) Si wafers using a silver catalyzed top-down etching process. The piezoresistance response of these SiNW arrays was analyzed by measuring their I-V characteristics under applied uniaxial as well as isostatic pressure. The interconnected SiNWs exhibit increased mechanical stability in comparison with separated or periodic nanowires. The repeatability of the fabrication process and statistical distribution of measurements were also tested on several samples from different batches. A sensing resolution down to roughly 1 mbar pressure was observed with uniaxial force application, and more than two orders of magnitude resistance variation were determined for isostatic pressure below atmospheric pressure., Reykjavík University

We investigate the photoluminescence properties of structures comprising of Si1-xGex nanoparticles (NPs) within SiO2, GeO2, TiO2 and Ta2O5 oxide matrices. Of the investigated structures, it was observed that the structures with GeO2 and TiO2 matrices provide increased spectral response (at ~907 and 844 nm respectively) and increased PL intensity. The improved PL characteristic have been attributed to increased diffusion barrier against oxygen which otherwise would result in formation of unwanted oxide at the film-oxide interface, thereby deteriorating the optical properties., This work is partially funded by the Icelandic Research Fund Grants nos. 218029 and 196141., Pre-print (óritrýnt handrit)

Post-print (lokagerð höfundar), A direct optimization method for obtaining excited electronic states using density functionals is presented. It involves selective convergence on saddle points on the energy surface representing the variation of the energy as a function of the electronic degrees of freedom, thereby avoiding convergence to a minimum and corresponding variational collapse to the ground electronic state. The method is based on an exponential transformation of the molecular orbitals, making it possible to use efficient quasi-Newton optimization approaches. Direct convergence on a target nth-order saddle point is guided by an appropriate preconditioner for the optimization as well as the maximum overlap method. Results of benchmark calculations of 52 excited states of molecules indicate that the method is more robust than a standard self-consistent field (SCF) approach especially when degenerate or quasi-degenerate orbitals are involved. The method can overcome challenges arising from rearrangement of closely spaced orbitals in a charge-transfer excitation of the nitrobenzene molecule, a case where the SCF fails to converge. Post-print (lokagerð höfundar), A variant of the direct optimization method for point-to-point ionospheric ray tracing is presented. The method is well suited for applications where the launch direction of the radio wave ray is unknown, but the position of the receiver is specified instead. Iterative transformation of a candidate path to the sought-for ray is guided by a generalized force, where the definition of the force depends on the ray type. For high rays, the negative gradient of the optical path functional is used. For low rays, the transformation of the gradient is applied, converting the neighbourhood of a saddle point to that of a local minimum. Knowledge about the character of the rays is used to establish a scheme for systematic identification of all relevant rays between given points, without the need to provide an accurate initial estimate for each solution. Various applications of the method to isotropic ionosphere demonstrate its ability to resolve complex ray configurations including three-dimensional propagation and multi-path propagation where rays are close in the launch direction. Publisher's version (útgefin grein), The electrochemical CO2reduction reaction (CO2RR) on RuO2and RuO2-based electrodes has been shown experimentally to produce high yields of methanol, formic acid and/or hydrogen while methane formation is not detected. This CO2RR selectivity on RuO2is in stark contrast to copper metal electrodes that produce methane and hydrogen in the highest yields whereas methanol is only formed in trace amounts. Density functional theory calculations on RuO2(110) where only adsorption free energies of intermediate species are considered,i.e.solvent effects and energy barriers are not included, predict however, that the overpotential and the potential limiting step for both methanol and methane are the same. In this work, we use bothab initiomolecular dynamics simulations at room temperature and total energy calculations to improve the model system and methodology by including both explicit solvation effects and calculations of proton-electron transfer energy barriers to elucidate the reaction mechanism towards several CO2RR products: methanol, methane, formic acid, CO and methanediol, as well as for the competing H2evolution. We observe a significant difference in energy barriers towards methane and methanol, where a substantially larger energy barrier is calculated towards methane formation than towards methanol formation, explaining why methanol has been detected experimentally but not methane. Furthermore, the calculations show why RuO2also catalyzes the CO2RR towards formic acid and not CO(g) and methanediol, in agreement with experimental results. However, our calculations predict RuO2to be much more selective towards H2formation than for the CO2RR at any applied potential. Post-print (lokagerð höfundar), Copper(I) bis-phenanthroline complexes represent Earth-abundant alternatives to ruthenium-based sensitizers for solar energy conversion and photocatalysis. Improved understanding of the solvent- mediated excited-state structural dynamics can help optimize their photoconversion efficiency. Through direct dynamics simulations in acetonitrile and excited-state minimum energy path calculations in vacuum, we uncover the mechanism of the photoinduced flattening motion of the prototypical system [Cu(dmphen)2]+ (dmphen = 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline). We find that the ligand distortion is a two-step process in acetonitrile. The fast component (~110 fs) is due to spontaneous pseudo Jahn– Teller instability and is largely solvent independent, while the slow component (~1.2 ps) arises from the mutual interplay between solvent molecules closely approaching the metal center and rotation of the methyl substituents. These results shed new light on the influence of a donor solvent such as acetonitrile and methyl substituents on the flattening dynamics of [Cu(dmphen)2]+., The present work has received funding from the Icelandic Research Fund (grants number 196070-051 and 196279-051). Publisher's version (útgefin grein), Background: Oblique angle deposition is known for yielding the growth of columnar grains that are tilted in the direction of the deposition flux. Using this technique combined with high-power impulse magnetron sputtering (HiPIMS) can induce unique properties in ferromagnetic thin films. Earlier we have explored the properties of polycrystalline and epitaxially deposited permalloy thin films deposited under 35° tilt using HiPIMS and compared it with films deposited by dc magnetron sputtering (dcMS). The films prepared by HiPIMS present lower anisotropy and coercivity fields than films deposited with dcMS. For the epitaxial films dcMS deposition gives biaxial anisotropy while HiPIMS deposition gives a well-defined uniaxial anisotropy. Results: We report on the deposition of 50 nm polycrystalline nickel thin films by dcMS and HiPIMS while the tilt angle with respect to the substrate normal is varied from 0° to 70°. The HiPIMS-deposited films are always denser, with a smoother surface and are magnetically softer than the dcMS-deposited films under the same deposition conditions. The obliquely deposited HiPIMS films are significantly more uniform in terms of thickness. Cross-sectional SEM images reveal that the dcMS-deposited film under 70° tilt angle consists of well-defined inclined nanocolumnar grains while grains of HiPIMS-deposited films are smaller and less tilted. Both deposition methods result in in-plane isotropic magnetic behavior at small tilt angles while larger tilt angles result in uniaxial magnetic anisotropy. The transition tilt angle varies with deposition method and is measured around 35° for dcMS and 60° for HiPIMS. Conclusion: Due to the high discharge current and high ionized flux fraction, the HiPIMS process can suppress the inclined columnar growth induced by oblique angle deposition. Thus, the ferromagnetic thin films obliquely deposited by HiPIMS deposition exhibit different magnetic properties than dcMS-deposited films. Publisher's version (útgefin grein), Multilayer structures comprising of SiO2/SiGe/SiO2 and containing SiGe nanoparticles were obtained by depositing SiO2 layers using reactive direct current magnetron sputtering (dcMS), whereas, Si and Ge were co-sputtered using dcMS and high-power impulse magnetron sputtering (HiPIMS). The as-grown structures subsequently underwent rapid thermal annealing (550-900 degrees C for 1 min) in N-2 ambient atmosphere. The structures were investigated using X-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy together with spectral photocurrent measurements, to explore structural changes and corresponding properties. It is observed that the employment of HiPIMS facilitates the formation of SiGe nanoparticles (2.1 +/- 0.8 nm) in the as-grown structure, and that presence of such nanoparticles acts as a seed for heterogeneous nucleation, which upon annealing results in the periodically arranged columnar self-assembly of SiGe core-shell nanocrystals. An increase in photocurrent intensity by more than an order of magnitude was achieved by annealing. Publisher's version (útgefin grein), We report promising results regarding the possible use of AlN or Al 2 O 3 as a gate dielectric in 4H-SiC MISFETs. The crystalline AlN films are grown by hot wall metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) at 1100 °C. The amorphous Al 2 O 3 films are grown by repeated deposition and subsequent low temperature (200 °C) oxidation of thin Al layers using a hot plate. Our investigation shows a very low density of interface traps at the AlN/4H-SiC and the Al 2 O 3 /4H-SiC interface estimated from capacitance-voltage (CV) analysis of MIS capacitors. Current-voltage (IV) analysis shows that the breakdown electric field across the AlN or Al 2 O 3 is ∼ 3 MV/cm or ∼ 5 MV/cm respectively. By depositing an additional SiO 2 layer by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition at 300 °C on top of the AlN or Al 2 O 3 layers, it is possible to increase the breakdown voltage of the MIS capacitors significantly without having pronounced impact on the quality of the AlN/SiC or Al 2 O 3 /SiC interfaces., This work was financially supported by The Icelandic Research Fund. Publisher's version (útgefin grein), We consider numerical fits to non-supersymmetric SO(10)-based models in which neutrino mass is generated by the type-I or type-II seesaw mechanism or a combination of both. The fits are performed with a sophisticated top-down procedure, taking into account the renormalization group equations of the gauge and Yukawa couplings, integrating out relevant degrees of freedom at their corresponding mass scales, and using recent data for the Standard Model observables. We find acceptable fits for normal neutrino mass ordering only and with neutrino mass generated by either type-I seesaw only or a combination of types I and II seesaw in which type-I seesaw is dominant. Furthermore, we find predictions from the best fit regarding the small neutrino masses, the effective neutrinoless double beta decay mass, and the leptonic CP-violating phase. Publisher's version (útgefin grein), We begin the exploration of holographic duals to theories with generalised global (higher-form) symmetries. In particular, we focus on the case of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) in strongly coupled plasmas by constructing and analysing a holographic dual to a recent, generalised global symmetry-based formulation of dissipative MHD. The simplest holographic dual to the effective theory of MHD that was proposed as a description of plasmas with any equation of state and transport coefficients contains dynamical graviton and two-form gauge field fluctuations in a magnetised black brane background. The dual field theory, which is closely related to the large-N c , N = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory at (infinitely) strong coupling, is, as we argue, in our setup coupled to a dynamical U(1) gauge field with a renormalisation condition-dependent electromagnetic coupling. After constructing the holographic dictionary for gauge-gravity duals of field theories with higher-form symmetries, we compute the dual equation of state and transport coefficients, and for the first time analyse phenomenology of MHD waves in a strongly interacting, dense plasma with a (holographic) microscopic description. For the transient and the intermediate time regimes, the current and the average photon number are calculated by solving a Markovian master equation in the dressed-states picture, with the Coulomb interaction also taken into account. We predict that in the presence of a transverse magnetic field the interdot Rabi oscillations appearing in the intermediate and transient regime coexist with slower non-equilibrium fluctuations in the occupation of states for opposite spin orientation. The interdot Rabi oscillation induces charge oscillations across the system and a phase difference between the transient source and drain currents. Post-print / Lokaútgáfa höfundar, Theoretical calculations of thermally activated decay of skyrmions in systems comprising several magnetic monolayers are presented, with a special focus on bilayer systems. Mechanisms of skyrmion collapse are identified and corresponding energy barriers and thermal collapse rates are evaluated as functions of the interlayer exchange coupling and mutual stacking of the monolayers using transition state theory and an atomistic spin Hamiltonian. In order to contrast the results to monolayer systems, the magnetic interactions within each layer are chosen so as to mimic the well-established Pd/Fe/Ir(111) system. Even bilayer systems demonstrate a rich diversity of skyrmion collapse mechanisms that sometimes coexist. For very weakly coupled layers, the skyrmions in each layer decay successively via radially symmetric shrinking. Slightly larger coupling leads to an asymmetric chimera collapse stabilized by the interlayer exchange. When the interlayer exchange coupling reaches a certain critical value, the skyrmions collapse simultaneously. Interestingly, the overall energy barrier for the skyrmion collapse does not always converge to a multiple of that for a monolayer system in the strongly coupled regime. For a certain stacking of the magnetic layers, the energy barrier as a function of the interlayer exchange coupling features a maximum and then decreases with the coupling strength in the strong coupling regime. Calculated mechanisms of skyrmion collapse are used to ultimately predict the skyrmion lifetime. Publisher's version (útgefin grein), Bose-Einstein condensates of exciton-polaritons in inorganic semiconductor microcavities are known to possess strong interparticle interactions attributed to their excitonic component. The interactions play a crucial role in the nonlinear dynamics of such systems and can be witnessed as the energy blueshifts of polariton states. However, the localised nature of Frenkel excitons in strongly coupled organic microcavities precludes interparticle Coulomb exchange-interactions that change mechanisms of the nonlinearity and blueshifts accordingly. In this report, we unravel the origins of blueshifts in organic polariton condensates. We examine the possible contributions: intracavity optical Kerr-effect, gain-induced frequency-pulling, polariton interactions and effects related to saturation of optical transitions for weakly- and strongly-coupled molecules. We conclude that blueshifts in organic polariton condensates arise from the interplay of the saturation effects and intermolecular energy migration. Publisher's version (útgefin grein), Despite the successes of the Standard Model of particle physics, it is known to suffer from a number of deficiencies. Several of these can be addressed within non-supersymmetric theories of grand unification based on SO(10). However, achieving gauge coupling unification in such theories is known to require additional physics below the unification scale, such as symmetry breaking in multiple steps. Many such models are disfavored due to bounds on the proton lifetime. Corrections arising from threshold effects can, however, modify these conclusions. We analyze all seven relevant breaking chains with one intermediate symmetry breaking scale, assuming the “survival hypothesis” for the scalar masses. Two are allowed by proton lifetime and two are disfavored by a failure to unify the gauge couplings. The remaining three unify at a too low scale, but can be salvaged by various amounts of threshold corrections. We parametrize this and thereby rank the models by the size of the threshold corrections required to save them., The authors wish to thank Sofiane M. Publisher's version (útgefin grein), The stereospecific structure of triacylglycerols (TAGs) affects the bioavailability of fatty acids. Lack of enantiopure reference compounds and effective enantiospecific methods have hindered the stereospecific analysis of individual TAGs. Twelve novel enantiostructured AAB-type TAGs were synthesized containing one of the three n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid: α-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), or docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in sn-1 or sn-3 position. These compounds formed six enantiomer pairs, which were separated with recycling high-performance liquid chromatography using chiral columns and UV detection. The chromatographic retention behavior of the enantiomers and the stereospecific elution order were studied. The enantiomer with an n-3 PUFA in the sn-1 position eluted faster than the enantiomer with the n-3 PUFA in the sn-3 position, regardless of the carbon chain length and number of double bonds of the PUFA. TAG enantiomers containing DHA exhibited highly different retention on the chiral column and were separated after the first column, whereas recycling was needed to separate the enantiomer pairs containing ALA or EPA. Publisher's version (útgefin grein), Immobilized enzymatic catalysts are widely used in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. As Candida antarctica lipase B (CALB) is one of the more commonly used biocatalysts, we attempted to design an optimal lipase-catalytic system. In order to do that, we investigated the enantioselectivity and lipolytic activity of CALB immobilized on 12 different supports. Immobilization of lipase on IB-D152 allowed us to achieve hyperactivation (178%) in lipolytic activity tests. Moreover, the conversion in enantioselective esterification increased 43-fold, when proceeding with lipase-immobilized on IB-S861. The immobilized form exhibited a constant high catalytic activity in the temperature range of 25 to 55°C. Additionally, the lipase immobilized on IBD152 exhibited a higher lipolytic activity in the pH range of 6 to 9 compared with the native form. Interestingly, our investigations showed that IB-S500 and IB-S60S offered a possibility of application in catalysis in both organic and aqueous solvents. A significant link between the reaction media, the substrates, the supports and the lipase was confirmed. Publisher's version (útgefin grein), We report on a systematic search for AdS5 vacua corresponding to critical points of the potential in the five-dimensional N = 8 SO(6) gauged supergravity. By employing Google’s TensorFlow Machine Learning library, we find the total of 32 critical points including 5 previously known ones. All 27 new critical points are non-supersymmetric. We compute the mass spectra of scalar fluctuatons for all points and find that the non- supersymmetric AdS5 vacua are perturbatively unstable. Many of the new critical points can be found analytically within consistent truncations of the N = 8 supergravity with respect to discrete subgroups of the S(O(6) × GL(2, ℝ)) symmetry of the potential. In par- ticular, we discuss in detail a ℤ23-invariant truncation with 10 scalar fields and 15 critical points. We also compute explicitly the scalar potential in a ℤ22-invariant extension of that truncation to 18 scalar fields and reproduce 17 of the 32 critical points from the numerical search. Finally, we show that the full potential as a function of 42 scalar fields can be studied analytically using the so-called solvable parametrization. Publisher's version (útgefin grein), Highly nonlinear optical materials with strong effective photon-photon interactions are required for ultrafast and quantum optical signal processing circuitry. Here we report strong Kerr-like nonlinearities by employing efficient optical transitions of charged excitons (trions) observed in semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs). By hybridising trions in monolayer MoSe2 at low electron densities with a microcavity mode, we realise trion-polaritons exhibiting significant energy shifts at small photon fluxes due to phase space filling. We find the ratio of trion- to neutral exciton–polariton interaction strength is in the range from 10 to 100 in TMDC materials and that trion-polariton nonlinearity is comparable to that in other polariton systems. The results are in good agreement with a theory accounting for the composite nature of excitons and trions and deviation of their statistics from that of ideal bosons and fermions. Publisher's version (útgefin grein), Polariton condensates' propagation is strongly dependent on the particular energy landscape the particles are moving upon, in which the geometry of the pathway laid for their movement plays a crucial role. Bends in the circuit's trajectories affect the condensates' speed and oblique geometries introduce an additional discretization of the polaritons' momenta due to the mixing of short and long axis wavevectors on the propagating eigenvalues. In this work, the nature of the propagation of condensates along the arms of a polariton coupler is studied by a combination of time-resolved micro-tomography measurements and a theoretical model based on a mean field approximation where condensed polaritons are described by an equation for the slow varying amplitude of the polariton field coupled to an equation for the density of incoherent excitons., E.R. and J.B. contributed equally to this work. The identification of the sources that reionized the Universe and their specific contribution to this process are key missing pieces of our knowledge of the early Universe. Faint star-forming galaxies may be the main contributors to the ionizing photon budget during the epoch of reionization, but their escaping photons cannot be detected directly due to inter-galactic medium opacity. Hence, it is essential to characterize the properties of faint galaxies with significant Lyman continuum (LyC) photon leakage up to z ∼ 4 to define indirect indicators allowing analogs to be found at the highest redshift. Aims. Long gamma-ray bursts (LGRBs) typically explode in star-forming regions of faint, star-forming galaxies. Through LGRB afterglow spectroscopy it is possible to detect directly LyC photons. Our aim is to use LGRBs as tools to study LyC leakage from faint, star-forming galaxies at high redshift. Methods. Here we present the observations of LyC emission in the afterglow spectra of GRB 191004B at z = 3.5055, together with those of the other two previously known LyC-leaking LGRB host galaxies (GRB 050908 at z = 3.3467, and GRB 060607A at z = 3.0749), to determine their LyC escape fraction and compare their properties. Results. From the afterglow spectrum of GRB 191004B we determine a neutral hydrogen column density at the LGRB redshift of log(NH I/cm−2) = 17.2 ± 0.15, and negligible extinction (AV = 0.03 ± 0.02 mag). The only metal absorption lines detected are C IV and Si IV. In contrast to GRB 050908 and GRB 060607A, the host galaxy of GRB 191004B displays significant Lyman-alpha (Lyα) emission. From its Lyα emission and the non-detection of Balmer emission lines we constrain its star-formation rate (SFR) to 1 ≤ SFR ≤ 4.7 M⊙ yr−1. We fit the Lyα emission with a shell model and find parameters values consistent with the observed ones. The absolute (relative) LyC escape fractions we find for GRB 191004B, GRB 050908 and GRB 060607A are of 0.35−0.11+0.10 (0.43−0.13+0.12), 0.08−0.04+0.05 (0.08−0.04+0.05) and 0.20−0.05+0.05 (0.45−0.15+0.15), respectively. We compare the LyC escape fraction of LGRBs to the values of other LyC emitters found from the literature, showing that LGRB afterglows can be powerful tools to study LyC escape for faint high-redshift star-forming galaxies. Indeed we could push LyC leakage studies to much higher absolute magnitudes. The host galaxies of the three LGRBs presented here have all M1600 > −19.5 mag, with the GRB 060607A host at M1600 > −16 mag. LGRB hosts may therefore be particularly suitable for exploring the ionizing escape fraction in galaxies that are too faint or distant for conventional techniques. Publisher's version (útgefin grein), We review and investigate lepton flavor models, stemming from discrete non- Abelian flavor symmetries, described by one or two free model parameters. First, we confront eleven one- and seven two-parameter models with current results on leptonic mixing angles from global fits to neutrino oscillation data. We find that five of the one- and five of the two-parameter models survive the confrontation test at 3σ. Second, we investigate how these ten one- and two-parameter lepton flavor models may be discriminated at the proposed ESSnuSB experiment in Sweden. We show that the three one-parameter models that predict sin δCP = 0 can be distinguished from those two that predict | sin δCP| = 1 by at least 7σ. Finally, we find that three of the five one-parameter models can be excluded by at least 5σ and two of the one-parameter as well as at most two of the five two-parameter models can be excluded by at least 3σ with ESSnuSB if the true values of the leptonic mixing parameters remain close to the present best-fit values., We would like to thank Marcos Dracos, Tord Ekel of, and Marcus Pernow for useful dis-cussions. Publisher's version (útgefin grein), We establish an attractor mechanism for the horizon metric of asymptotically locally AdS4 supersymmetric black holes. The horizon is a smooth Riemann surface with arbitrary metric at asymptotic infinity which is fixed to the constant curvature metric in the near horizon region. We show how this mechanism is realized for four-dimensional N = 2 gauged supergravity coupled to vector multiplets by focusing on the STU model. A similar analysis is performed for gauged supergravity theories in five, six, and seven dimen- sions where we establish the same mechanism by extending previous results on holographic uniformization.

The regular solutions of this equation lead to the well-known wrapped branesupergravity solutions associated with the constant curvature metric on a compact Riemannsurface. We show that some singular solutions of the Liouville equation have a physicalinterpretation as explicit point-like brane sources on the Riemann surface. We uncover thedetails of this picture by focusing onN= 1theories of classSarising from M5-branes on apunctured Riemann surface. We present explicit AdS5solutions dual to these SCFTs andcheck the holographic duality by showing the non-trivial agreement of ’t Hooft anomalies.

Publisher's version (útgefin grein), A Page curve for an evaporating black hole in asymptotically flat spacetime is computed by adapting the Quantum Ryu-Takayanagi (QRT) proposal to an analytically solvable semi-classical two-dimensional dilaton gravity theory. The Page time is found to be one third of the black hole lifetime, at leading order in semi-classical corrections. A Page curve is also obtained for a semi-classical eternal black hole, where energy loss due to Hawking evaporation is balanced by an incoming energy flux.

Publisher's version (útgefin grein), We find the holographic dual to the three classes of superconformal Janus interfaces in N = 4 SYM that preserve three-dimensional N = 4, N = 2, and N = 1 supersymmetry. The solutions are constructed in five-dimensional SO(6) maximal gauged supergravity and are then uplifted to type IIB supergravity. Corresponding to each of the three classes of Janus solutions, there are also AdS4× S1× S5 J-fold backgrounds. These J-folds have a non-trivial SL(2, ℤ) monodromy for the axio-dilaton on the S1 and are dual to three-dimensional superconformal field theories.

Publisher's version (útgefin grein), Molybdenum nitrogenase is one of the most intriguing metalloenzymes in nature, featuring an exotic iron-molybdenum-sulfur cofactor, FeMoco, whose mode of action remains elusive. In particular, the molecular and electronic structure of the N2-binding E4 state is not known. In this study we present theoretical QM/MM calculations of new structural models of the E4 state of molybdenum-dependent nitrogenase and compare to previously suggested models for this enigmatic redox state. We propose two models as possible candidates for the E4 state. Both models feature two hydrides on the FeMo cofactor, bridging atoms Fe2 and Fe6 with a terminal sulfhydryl group on either Fe2 or Fe6 (derived from the S2B bridge) and the change in coordination results in local lower-spin electronic structure at Fe2 and Fe6. These structures appear consistent with the bridging hydride proposal put forward from ENDOR studies and are calculated to be lower in energy than other proposed models for E4 at the TPSSh-QM/MM level of theory. We critically analyze the DFT method dependency in calculations of FeMoco that has resulted in strikingly different proposals for this state. Importantly, dinitrogen binds exothermically to either Fe2 or Fe6 in our models, contrary to others, an effect rationalized via the unique ligand field (from the hydrides) at the Fe with an empty coordination site. A low-spin Fe site is proposed as being important to N2 binding. Furthermore, the geometries of these states suggest a feasible reductive elimination step that could follow, as experiments indicate. Via this step, two electrons are released, reducing the cofactor to yield a distorted 4-coordinate Fe2 or Fe6 that partially activates N2. We speculate that stabilization of an N2-bound Fe(i) at Fe6 (not found for Fe2 model) via reductive elimination is a crucial part of N2 activation in nitrogenases, possibly aided by the apical heterometal ion (Mo or V). By using protons from the sulfhydryl group (to regenerate the sulfide bridge between Fe2 and Fe6) and the nearby homocitrate hydroxy group, we calculate a plausible route to yield a diazene intermediate. Publisher's version (útgefin grein), The two-dimensional Heisenberg exchange model with out-of-plane anisotropy and a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction is employed to investigate the lifetime and stability of antiferromagnetic (AFM) skyrmion as a function of temperature and external magnetic field. An isolated AFM skyrmion is metastable at zero temperature in a certain parameter range set by two boundaries separating the skyrmion state from the uniform AFM phase and a stripe domain phase. The distribution of the energy barriers for the AFM skyrmion decay into the uniform AFM state complements the zero-temperature stability diagram and demonstrates that the skyrmion stability region is significantly narrowed at finite temperatures. We show that the AFM skyrmion stability can be enhanced by an application of magnetic field, whose strength is comparable to the spin-flop field. This stabilization of AFM skyrmions in external magnetic fields is in sharp contrast to the behavior of their ferromagnetic counterparts. We assume rotational symmetry and we use the entropy current formalism. The curved background geometry in the absence of boost symmetry is called absolute or Aristotelian spacetime. We present a closed-form expression for the energy-momentum tensor in Landau frame which splits into three parts: a dissipative (10), a hydrostatic non-dissipative (2) and a non-hydrostatic non-dissipative part (4), where in parenthesis we have indicated the number of allowed transport coefficients. The non-hydrostatic non-dissipative transport coefficients can be thought of as the generalization of coefficients that would vanish if we were to restrict to linearized perturbations and impose the Onsager relations. For the two hydrostatic and the four non-hydrostatic non-dissipative transport coefficients we present a Lagrangian description. Publisher's version (útgefin grein), Optical bound states in the continuum (BICs) provide a way to engineer very narrow resonances in photonic crystals. The extended interaction time in these systems is particularly promising for the enhancement of nonlinear optical processes and the development of the next generation of active optical devices. However, the achievable interaction strength is limited by the purely photonic character of optical BICs. Here, we mix the optical BIC in a photonic crystal slab with excitons in the atomically thin semiconductor MoSe2 to form nonlinear exciton-polaritons with a Rabi splitting of 27 meV, exhibiting large interaction-induced spectral blueshifts. The asymptotic BIC-like suppression of polariton radiation into the far field toward the BIC wavevector, in combination with effective reduction of the excitonic disorder through motional narrowing, results in small polariton linewidths below 3 meV. Together with a strongly wavevector-dependent Q-factor, this provides for the enhancement and control of polariton–polariton interactions and the resulting nonlinear optical effects, paving the way toward tuneable BIC-based polaritonic devices for sensing, lasing, and nonlinear optics., The authors acknowledge funding from the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation through Megagrant No. 14.Y26.31.0015. Publisher's version (útgefin grein), We obtain the holographic complexity of an evaporating black hole in the semi-classical RST model of two-dimensional dilaton gravity, using a volume prescription that takes into account the higher-dimensional origin of the model. For classical black holes, we recover the expected late time behaviour of the complexity, but new features arise at the semi-classical level. By considering the volume inside the stretched horizon of the evolving black hole, we obtain sensible results for the rate of growth of the complexity, with an early onset of order the black hole scrambling time followed by an extended period where the rate of growth tracks the shrinking area of the stretched horizon as the black hole evaporates.

Publisher's version (útgefin grein)., We investigate the complete renormalization group running of fermion observables in two different realistic non-supersymmetric models based on the gauge group SO(10) with intermediate symmetry breaking for both normal and inverted neutrino mass orderings. Contrary to results of previous works, we find that the model with the more minimal Yukawa sector of the Lagrangian fails to reproduce the measured values of observables at the electroweak scale, whereas the model with the more extended Yukawa sector can do so if the neutrino masses have normal ordering. Publisher's version (útgefin grein), Icelandic waters are very productive and the fisheries are economically important for the Icelandic nation. The importance of the fisheries has led to progressive fisheries management and extensive monitoring of the ecosystem. However, fisheries management is mainly built on single species stock assessment models, and multi-species or ecological models are essential for building capacity around ecosystem-based fisheries management. This paper describes the first end-to-end model for the Icelandic waters using the Atlantis modeling framework. The modeled area is 1,600,000 km2, and covers the area from Greenland through Icelandic waters to the Faroe Islands. The ocean area was divided into 51 spatial boxes, each with multiple vertical layers. There were 52 functional groups in the model: 20 fish groups (8 at a species level), 5 groups of mammals, 1 seabird group, 16 invertebrates, 5 primary producers, 2 bacteria and 3 detritus groups. The reliability of the model was evaluated using a skill assessment and a sensitivity analysis was conducted to understand the dynamics of the system. The sensitivity study revealed that saithe, redfish and tooth whales had the greatest effect on other groups in the system. The skill assessment showed that the model was able to replicate time-series of biomass and landings for the most important commercial groups and that modeling of the recruitment processes was important for some of the groups. Publisher's version (útgefin grein), The relationship between the size and stability of isolated skyrmions in a magnetic monolayer is analyzed based on minimum energy path calculations and atomistic spin Hamiltonian. It is demonstrated that the energy barrier protecting the skyrmion from collapse to the ferromagnetic state is not uniquely defined by the skyrmion size, although these two properties as functions of relevant material parameters follow similar trends. Stability of nanoscale skyrmions can be enhanced by a concerted adjustment of material parameters. The proposed parameter transformation conserves the skyrmion size, but does not conserve the skyrmion shape which changes from an arrow-like pattern to a profile that resembles magnetic bubbles. This transformation of the skyrmion shape is accompanied by an increase in the collapse energy barrier and thus enhancement of skyrmion stability., This work is supported by the Russian Science Foundation (Grant No. 17-72-10195).

Pre-print (óritrýnt handrit), We contrast predictions for the high-redshift galaxy population and reionization history between cold dark matter (CDM) and an alternative self-interacting dark matter model based on the recently developed ETHOS framework that alleviates the small-scale CDM challenges within the Local Group. We perform the highest resolution hydrodynamical cosmological simulations (a 36 Mpc3 volume with gas cell mass of ∼105M⊙ and minimum gas softening of ∼180 pc) within ETHOS to date – plus a CDM counterpart – to quantify the abundance of galaxies at high redshift and their impact on reionization. We find that ETHOS predicts galaxies with higher ultraviolet (UV) luminosities than their CDM counterparts and a faster build-up of the faint end of the UV luminosity function. These effects, however, make the optical depth to reionization less sensitive to the power spectrum cut-off: the ETHOS model differs from the CDM τ value by only 10 per cent and is consistent with Planck limits if the effective escape fraction of UV photons is 0.1–0.5. We conclude that current observations of high-redshift luminosity functions cannot differentiate between ETHOS and CDM models, but deep James Webb Space Telescope surveys of strongly lensed, inherently faint galaxies have the potential to test non-CDM models that offer attractive solutions to CDM's Local Group problems., MRL is supported by a COFUND/Durham Junior Research Fellowship under EU grant 609412. The distinctive prismatic geometry of semiconductor core-shell nanowires leads to complex localization patterns of carriers. Here, we describe the formation of optically active in-gap excitonic states induced by the interplay between localization of carriers in the corners and their mutual Coulomb interaction. To compute the energy spectra and configurations of excitons created in the conductive shell, we use a multi-electron numerical approach based on the exact solution of the multi-particle Hamiltonian for electrons in the valence and conduction bands, which includes the Coulomb interaction in a nonperturbative manner. We expose the formation of well separated quasidegenerate levels, and focus on the implications of the electron localization in the corners or on the sides of triangular, square and hexagonal cross sections. We obtain excitonic in-gap states associated with symmetrically distributed electrons in the spin singlet configuration. They acquire large contributions due to Coulomb interaction, and thus are shifted to much higher energies than other states corresponding to the conduction electron and the vacancy localized in the same corner. We compare the results of the multi-electron method with those of an electron-hole model and we show that the latter does not reproduce the singlet excitonic states. In the current contribution we present a comprehensive study on the heteronuclear carbonyl complex H2FeRu3(CO)13 covering its low energy electron induced fragmentation in the gas phase through dissociative electron attachment (DEA) and dissociative ionization (DI), its decomposition when adsorbed on a surface under controlled ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) conditions and exposed to irradiation with 500 eV electrons, and its performance in focused electron beam induced deposition (FEBID) at room temperature under HV conditions. The performance of this precursor in FEBID is poor, resulting in maximum metal content of 26 atom % under optimized conditions. Furthermore, the Ru/Fe ratio in the FEBID deposit (≈3.5) is higher than the 3:1 ratio predicted. This is somewhat surprising as in recent FEBID studies on a structurally similar bimetallic precursor, HFeCo3(CO)12, metal contents of about 80 atom % is achievable on a routine basis and the deposits are found to maintain the initial Co/Fe ratio. Low temperature (≈213 K) surface science studies on thin films of H2FeRu3(CO)13 demonstrate that electron stimulated decomposition leads to significant CO desorption (average of 8–9 CO groups per molecule) to form partially decarbonylated intermediates. However, once formed these intermediates are largely unaffected by either further electron irradiation or annealing to room temperature, with a predicted metal content similar to what is observed in FEBID. Furthermore, gas phase experiments indicate formation of Fe(CO)4 from H2FeRu3(CO)13 upon low energy electron interaction. This fragment could desorb at room temperature under high vacuum conditions, which may explain the slight increase in the Ru/Fe ratio of deposits in FEBID. The trapping is achieved due to the effect of band-gap opening outside the trapping region. Pre-print (óritrýnt handrit), The modification of geometry and interactions in two-dimensional magnetic nanosystems has enabled a range of studies addressing the magnetic order1,2,3,4,5,6, collective low-energy dynamics7,8 and emergent magnetic properties5, 9,10 in, for example, artificial spin-ice structures. The common denominator of all these investigations is the use of Ising-like mesospins as building blocks, in the form of elongated magnetic islands. Here, we introduce a new approach: single interaction modifiers, using slave mesospins in the form of discs, within which the mesospin is free to rotate in the disc plane11. We show that by placing these on the vertices of square artificial spin-ice arrays and varying their diameter, it is possible to tailor the strength and the ratio of the interaction energies. We demonstrate the existence of degenerate ice-rule-obeying states in square artificial spin-ice structures, enabling the exploration of thermal dynamics in a spin-liquid manifold. Furthermore, we even observe the emergence of flux lattices on larger length scales, when the energy landscape of the vertices is reversed. A new 1.2 Å crystal structure of vanadium nitrogenase, isolated under turnover conditions, recently revealed a light atom ligand (OH or NH) replacing the bridging S2B sulfide of the FeV cofactor. We present first experiments on electron beam induced deposition of silacyclohexane (SCH) and dichlorosilacyclohexane (DCSCH) under a focused high-energy electron beam (FEBID). We compare the deposition dynamics observed when growing pillars of high aspect ratio from these compounds and we compare the proximity effect observed for these compounds. The two precursors show similar behaviour with regards to fragmentation through dissociative ionization in the gas phase under single-collision conditions. However, while DCSCH shows appreciable cross sections with regards to dissociative electron attachment, SCH is inert with respect to this process. We discuss our deposition experiments in context of the efficiency of these different electron-induced fragmentation processes. With regards to the deposition dynamics, we observe a substantially faster growth from DCSCH and a higher saturation diameter when growing pillars with high aspect ratio. However, both compounds show similar behaviour with regards to the proximity effect. With regards to the composition of the deposits, we observe that the C/Si ratio is similar for both compounds and in both cases close to the initial molecular stoichiometry. The oxygen content in the DCSCH deposits is about double that of the SCH deposits. Only marginal chlorine is observed in the deposits of from DCSCH.
