Abstract

Soil moisture is recognized as an Essential Climate Variable (ECV) because it is crucial for assessing water availability for plants and hence food production. Having long time series of freely available soil moisture data with global coverage enables scientists, farmers and decision makers to detect trends, assess the impacts of climate change, and develop adaptation strategies.The collection, harmonization and archiving of in situ soil moisture data was the motivation to establish the International Soil Moisture Network (ISMN) at TU Wien, with the financial support of the European Space Agency (ESA), in 2009 as a community effort. The ISMN became an essential source for validating and improving global satellite products, and climate, land surface, and hydrological models. In 2021 permanent funding for the ISMN operations was secured through the German Government (Ministry of Digital and Transport).The transfer of the ISMN to its new host, i.e., the International Centre for Water Resources and Global Change (ICWRGC)/German Federal Institute of Hydrology (BfG), took place during 2021/2022. Finally, the ISMN started serving data from its new host in December 2022 while keeping the service continuously running throughout the migration. In parallel the team in Vienna developed and launched a new dataviewer. This presentation aims at showcasing new ISMN features as well as recent data contributions as well as next evolution of the ISMN based on synergies and science outcome of the Research and Development activities performed by ESA in the context of the Fiducial Reference Measurements for Soil Moisture (FRM4SM) project., The 28th IUGG General Assembly (IUGG2023) (Berlin 2023)

Abstract

Forest biomass is an essential indicator for monitoring the Earth's ecosystems and climate. It is a critical input to greenhouse gas accounting, estimation of carbon losses and forest degradation, assessment of renewable energy potential, and for developing climate change mitigation policies such as REDD+, among others. Wall-to-wall mapping of aboveground biomass (AGB) is now possible with satellite remote sensing (RS). However, RS methods require extant, up-to-date, reliable, representative and comparable in situ data for calibration and validation. Here, we present the Forest Observation System (FOS) initiative, an international cooperation to establish and maintain a global in situ forest biomass database. AGB and canopy height estimates with their associated uncertainties are derived at a 0.25 ha scale from field measurements made in permanent research plots across the world's forests. All plot estimates are geolocated and have a size that allows for direct comparison with many RS measurements. The FOS offers the potential to improve the accuracy of RS- based biomass products while developing new synergies between the RS and ground-based ecosystem research communities.

Abstract

The magnitude of the global terrestrial carbon pool and related fluxes to and from the atmosphere are still poorly known. The European Space Agency P-band radar BIOMASS mission will help to reduce this uncertainty by providing unprecedented information on the distribution of forest above-ground biomass (AGB), particularly in the tropics where the gaps are greatest and knowledge is most needed. Mission selection was made in full knowledge of coverage restrictions over Europe, North and Central America imposed by the US Department of Defense Space Objects Tracking Radar (SOTR) stations. Under these restrictions, only 3% of AGB carbon stock coverage is lost in the tropical forest biome, with this biome representing 66% of global AGB carbon stocks in 2005. The loss is more significant in the temperate (72%), boreal (37%) and subtropical (29%) biomes, with these accounting for approximately 12%, 15% and 7%, respectively, of the global forest AGB carbon stocks. In terms of global carbon cycle modelling, there is minimal impact in areas of high AGB density, since mainly lower biomass forests in cooler climates are affected. In addition, most areas affected by the SOTR stations are located in industrialized countries with well-developed national forest inventories, so that extensive information on AGB is already available. Hence the main scientific objectives of the BIOMASS mission are not seriously compromised. Furthermore, several space sensors that can estimate AGB in lower biomass forests are in orbit or planned for launch between now and the launch of BIOMASS in 2021, which will help to fill the gaps in mission coverage.

Abstract

The European Space Agency (ESA) released a Call for Proposals for the next Earth Explorer Core Mission in March 2005, with the aim to select the 7th Earth Explorer (EE-7) mission for launch in the next decade. Twenty-four proposals were received and subject to scientific and technical assessment. Six candidate missions were selected and further investigated in the preliminary feasibility studies (Phase 0). One of these missions is BIOMASS, which has recently been selected to proceed to Phase-A. BIOMASS is a response to the urgent need for greatly improved mapping of global biomass and the lack of any current space systems capable of addressing this need.
