Abstract

AbstractThe time scales of the Paris Climate Agreement indicate urgent action is required on climate policies over the next few decades, in order to avoid the worst risks posed by climate change. On these relatively short time scales the combined effect of climate variability and change are both key drivers of extreme events, with decadal time scales also important for infrastructure planning. Hence, in order to assess climate risk on such time scales, we require climate models to be able to represent key aspects of both internally driven climate variability and the response to changing forcings. In this paper we argue that we now have the modeling capability to address these requirements—specifically with global models having horizontal resolutions considerably enhanced from those typically used in previous Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP) exercises. The improved representation of weather and climate processes in such models underpins our enhanced confidence in predictions and projections, as well as providing improved forcing to regional models, which are better able to represent local-scale extremes (such as convective precipitation). We choose the global water cycle as an illustrative example because it is governed by a chain of processes for which there is growing evidence of the benefits of higher resolution. At the same time it comprises key processes involved in many of the expected future climate extremes (e.g., flooding, drought, tropical and midlatitude storms).

Abstract

Western North Pacific tropical cyclone (TC) model tracks are analyzed in two large multimodel ensembles, spanning a large variety of models and multiple future climate scenarios. Two methodologies are used to synthesize the properties of TC tracks in this large data set: cluster analysis and mass moment ellipses. First, the models' TC tracks are compared to observed TC tracks' characteristics, and a subset of the models is chosen for analysis, based on the tracks' similarity to observations and sample size. Potential changes in track types in a warming climate are identified by comparing the kernel smoothed probability distributions of various track variables in historical and future scenarios using a Kolmogorov-Smirnov significance test. Two track changes are identified. The first is a statistically significant increase in the north-south expansion, which can also be viewed as a poleward shift, as TC tracks are prevented from expanding equatorward due to the weak Coriolis force near the equator. The second change is an eastward shift in the storm tracks that occur near the central Pacific in one of the multimodel ensembles, indicating a possible increase in the occurrence of storms near Hawaii in a warming climate. The dependence of the results on which model and future scenario are considered emphasizes the necessity of including multiple models and scenarios when considering future changes in TC characteristics.

5. Freddy: breaking record for tropical cyclone precipitation?

Abstract

Depending on the location on the Earth, the amount of precipitation associated with tropical cyclones (TCs) can reach 20% of the total yearly precipitation over land and up to 40% over some ocean regions. TC induced freshwater flooding has been suggested to be the largest threat to human lives due to TCs. Therefore, a reliable quantification of the precipitation amount associated with each past TC is important for a better definition of the TC fingerprint on the climate. The temporal and horizontal resolution of state-of-the-art observational datasets and atmospheric reanalysis gives the possibility to quantify precipitation associated with TCs globally following the observed TC tracks. In this work we compare the TC-related precipitation in various observational and reanalysis datasets. A particular focus is given to the record-breaking TC Freddy (Southern Indian Ocean, 2023). Here we show that the time-varying bias in TC associated precipitation, due to the positive trend in assimilated observations, makes it difficult to assess long-term trend investigation based on reanalysis. To this aim we need to build on state-of-the-art general circulation models, free to evolve under historical radiative forcing.

Abstract

A realistic representation of the North Atlantic tropical cyclone tracks is crucial as it allows, for example, explaining potential changes in U.S. landfalling systems. Here, the authors present a tentative study that examines the ability of recent climate models to represent North Atlantic tropical cyclone tracks. Tracks from two types of climate models are evaluated: explicit tracks are obtained from tropical cyclones simulated in regional or global climate models withmoderate to high horizontal resolution (1°-0.25°), and downscaled tracks are obtained using a downscaling technique with large-scale environmental fields from a subset of these models. For both configurations, tracks are objectively separated into four groups using a cluster technique, leading to a zonal and a meridional separation of the tracks. The meridional separation largely captures the separation between deep tropical and subtropical, hybrid or baroclinic cyclones, while the zonal separation segregates Gulf of Mexico and Cape Verde storms. The properties of the tracks' seasonality, intensity, and power dissipation index in each cluster are documented for both configurations. The authors' results show that, except for the seasonality, the downscaled tracks better capture the observed characteristics of the clusters. The authors also use three different idealized scenarios to examine the possible future changes of tropical cyclone tracks under 1) warming sea surface temperature, 2) increasing carbon dioxide, and 3) a combination of the two. The response to each scenario is highly variable depending on the simulation considered. Finally, the authors examine the role of each cluster in these future changes and find no preponderant contribution of any single cluster over the others.

Abstract

Heavy rainfall and flooding associated with tropical cyclones (TCs) are responsible for a large number of fatalities and economic damage worldwide. Despite their large socioeconomic impacts, research into heavy rainfall and flooding associated with TCs has received limited attention to date and still represents a major challenge. The capability to adapt to future changes in heavy rainfall and flooding associated with TCs is inextricably linked to and informed by understanding of the sensitivity of TC rainfall to likely future forcing mechanisms. Here a set of idealized high-resolution atmospheric model experiments produced as part of the U.S. Climate Variability and Predictability (CLIVAR) Hurricane Working Group activity is used to examine TC response to idealized global-scale perturbations: the doubling of CO2, uniform 2-K increases in global sea surface temperature (SST), and their combined impact. As a preliminary but key step, daily rainfall patterns of composite TCs within climate model outputs are first compared and contrasted to the observational records. To assess similarities and differences across different regions in response to the warming scenarios, analyses are performed at the global and hemispheric scales and in six global TC ocean basins. The results indicate a reduction in TC daily precipitation rates in the doubling CO2 scenario (on the order of 5% globally) and an increase in TC rainfall rates associated with a uniform increase of 2K in SST (both alone and in combination with CO2 doubling; on the order of 10%-20% globally). © 2014 American Meteorological Society.

Abstract

The global characteristics of tropical cyclones (TCs) simulated by several climate models are analyzed and compared with observations. The global climate models were forced by the same sea surface temperature (SST) fields in two types of experiments, using climatological SST and interannually varying SST. TC tracks and intensities are derived from each model's output fields by the group who ran that model, using their own preferred tracking scheme; the study considers the combination of model and tracking scheme as a single modeling system, and compares the properties derived from the different systems. Overall, the observed geographic distribution of global TC frequency was reasonably well reproduced. As expected, with the exception of one model, intensities of the simulated TC were lower than in observations, to a degree that varies considerably across models. Abstract

Many cyclone detection and tracking methods (CDTMs) have been developed in the past to study the climatology of extratropical cyclones. However, all CDTMs have different approaches in defining and tracking cyclone centers. This naturally leads to cyclone track climatologies with inconsistent physical characteristics. More than that, it is typical for CDTMs to produce a non-negligible number of tracks of weak atmospheric features, which do not correspond to large-scale or mesoscale vortices and can differ significantly between CDTMs. Lack of consensus in CDTM outputs and the inclusion of significant numbers of uncertain tracks therein have long prohibited the production of a commonly accepted reference dataset of extratropical cyclone tracks. Such a dataset could allow comparable results on the analysis of storm track climatologies and could also contribute to the evaluation and improvement of CDTMs. To cover this gap, we present a new methodological approach that combines overlapping tracks from different CDTMs and produces composite tracks that concentrate the agreement of more than one CDTM. In this study we apply this methodology to the outputs of 10 well-established CDTMs which were originally applied to ERA5 reanalysis in the 42-year period of 1979-2020. We tested the sensitivity of our results to the spatiotemporal criteria that identify overlapping cyclone tracks, and for benchmarking reasons, we produced five reference datasets of subjectively tracked cyclones. Results show that climatological numbers of composite tracks are substantially lower than the ones of individual CDTMs, while benchmarking scores remain high (i.e., counting the number of subjectively tracked cyclones captured by the composite tracks). 19. Assessment of tropical cyclone activity in the cmcc SPS3.5 seasonal forecast

Abstract

Tropical cyclones (TCs) are one of the most severe weather hazards in the tropics, causing many human deaths and substantial property loss. Therefore, it is always urgent to significantly reduce systematic errors that may hinder the accurate forecast of TC activity. To evaluate the ability of the Euro-Mediterranean Center for Climate Change (CMCC) forecast system to represent TC activity and to verify the feasibility of TCs forecast, we use a new version of the CMCC Seasonal Prediction System (SPS3.5), which configures with high spatial resolution (0.5 degrees) in the atmospheric component and a large (40) number of ensemble members. We compared SPS3.5 hindcasts from 1998 to 2016 July-September with observed TC tracks derived from the International Best Track Archive for Climate Stewardship (IBTrACS). To identify storms and track their trajectories in SPS3.5, we use the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL) Tropical Cyclone tracking algorithm and set strict thresholds to ensure the authenticity of the captured TCs. We find that the SPS3.5 system captures the spatial distributions in the North Hemisphere (R~0.8) well, although it underestimates TCs' number magnitude, which relates to the model resolution and thresholds. TCs spatial distribution is best captured over the Pacific, where the largest peak season (August) is covered by our dataset, while lower-skill is shown over the North Atlantic Ocean and the North Indian Ocean. For TC variability, the model performs well only in the Western North Pacific (R up to 0.6). 20. Cause of the recent tendency of tropical cyclones approaching coasts as revealed by HighResMIP-PRIMAVERA simulations

Abstract

Tropical cyclones developing over the ocean threaten society when they approach land. A recent study found a tendency for tropical cyclones to reach their maximum intensity closer to the coast over the last 40 years. However, whether this trend is due to global warming or natural variability is unclear.This study aims to identify the cause of the observed trend. To this end, we analyzed the output of a high-resolution global multi-model ensemble prepared by the PRIMAVERA project according to the CMIP6 HighResMIP protocol. We assume that the atmosphere-only simulations reproduce both the responses to anthropogenic forcing and natural climate variability constrained by sea-surface temperature (SST) and that the air-sea coupled simulations reproduce only the forced response although other factors such as SST biases/errors may influence the results. The results show that the atmosphere-only simulations reproduced the observed trend, but the atmosphere-ocean coupled simulations did not. This suggests that the observed trend is not caused by global warming but by natural variability. We find that the relevant natural variability is the Inter-decadal Pacific Oscillation (IPO). A significant contribution to the trend is the variation of tropical cyclone genesis locations associated with IPO in the models, consistent with the results of observation data.

Abstract

Here, we analyze future projections of cyclone activity in the Mediterranean region at the end of the twenty-first century based on an ensemble of state-of-the-art fully-coupled Regional Climate System Models (RCSMs) from the Med-CORDEX initiative under the Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 8.5. Despite some noticeable biases, all the RCSMs capture spatial patterns and cyclone activity key characteristics in the region and thus all of them can be considered as plausible representations of the future evolution of Mediterranean cyclones. In general, the RCSMs show at the end of the twenty-first century a decrease in the number and an overall weakening of cyclones moving across the Mediterranean. Five out of seven RCSMs simulate also a decrease of the mean size of the systems. Moreover, in agreement with what already observed in CMIP5 projections for the area, the models suggest an increase in the Central part of the Mediterranean region and a decrease in the South-eastern part of the region in the cyclone-related wind speed and precipitation rate. These rather two opposite tendencies observed in the precipitation should compensate and amplify, respectively, the effect of the overall reduction of the frequency of cyclones on the water budget over the Central and South-eastern part of the region. A pronounced inter-model spread among the RCSMs emerges for the projected changes in the cyclone adjusted deepening rate, seasonal cycle occurrence and associated precipitation and wind patterns over some areas of the basin such as Ionian Sea and Iberian Peninsula. The differences observed appear to be determined by the driving Global Circulation Model (GCM) and influenced by the RCSM physics and internal variability. Abstract

This document provides a comprehensive desk review of climate adaptation models and tools for the “Study on Adaptation Modelling” on behalf of the Directorate General for Climate Action (DG CLIMA) (CLIMA/A.3/ETU/2018/0010). This work was undertaken by a consortium led by Fondazione Centro Euro-Mediterraneo sui Cambiamenti Climatici (CMCC) and includes Deltares, the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) and Paul Watkiss Associates (PWA). This comprehensive desk review aims to address the European Commissions’ requirement to support better-informed decision making on climate adaptation at multiple governance levels: it provides a comprehensive, up-to-date and forward looking overview of the range of technical, financial, economic and non-monetary models and tools for hazards, risks, impacts, vulnerability and adaptation climate assessments. This therefore aims not only to collate current knowledge on climate adaptation assessment methodologies, but to highlight research gaps in each field. This review subsequently informs a recommended approach for adaptation modelling, detailed in further reports.

Abstract

This document describes the impact assessment on infrastructure, built environment,and transport that has been conducted in order to inform the COACCH project. Theassessment uses state-of-the art models for coastal and river flooding as well as anew model for flood impacts to transport networks and computer impacts for Europeat higher spatial resolution(NUTS2) compared to previous studies. Future impacts (short-term to long-term) under varying socio-economic scenariosare computed for the RCP/SSP scenario combinations selected with stakeholders inWP1. In addition, coastal flood impacts are assessed for a high end scenario withglobal coastal average sea-level rise of 170cm until 2100, to illustrate the effects ofsuch a very improbable, but not impossible, high end sea-level rise. For adaptationtwo different strategies have been analysed: a follow current pratice strategy and ano adaptation strategy where no (further) adaptation measures are taken. Coastal floods can have most severe effects to infrastructure in the EU with expectedannual damages of €13 trillion (high end sea-level rise) respectively €4.5 trillion (RCP8.5), if no further adaptation measures are taken. However, investment intoadaptation can reduce these impacts drastically (two to three orders of magnitude),but adaptation to rising sea-level might cost between €15 billion and €40 billion everyyear in 2100. For river flooding, this deliverable introduces local-level river flood damage modelCLIMRISK-RIVER which is further integrated into CLIMRISK, a climate-economy IAM.The risk of river flooding in the EU is expected to rise from €9.5 billion in 2010 tobetween €70-80 billion in 2080 for most assessed RCP-SSP scenario combinations.However, an extreme outcome may arise for a future development aligned withRCP8.5-SSP5, for which projections show expected annual damage of €255 billion.The results show significant spatial inequalities of river flood risk, stressing theimportance of using local level river flood estimates in estimating the impacts ofclimate change for implementing timely local flood adaptation policies in the EU.The deliverable further introduces the newly developed line-based model OsdaMagefor assessing flood impacts to road infrastructure. By applying this model with riverfloods, we find that flood impacts to road infrastructure are in general 1-2% of thetotal flood damages. This shows that flood impacts to road infrastructure have beenoverestimated in previous studies.
