This study represents a pioneering investigation into using microfluidic technology for manufacturing PLA and PLGA nanocarriers (NCs) loaded with tracer molecules or metals through a co-precipitation protocol that involves saturating the water phase. The effects of total flow rate (TFR), flow rate ratio (FRR), surfactant amount, and polymer concentration on particle sizes and distributions were examined. The average size of PLA-NCs varied from 349 ± 175 nm to 170 ± 64 nm, with surface charges ranging from -13 to -6 mV. In contrast, PLGA-NCs had an average size between 192 ± 46 nm and 100 ± 34 nm, with surface charges from -23 mV to -53 mV. Increasing the TFR from 6 to 10 mL/min with a fixed FRR of 1:1 and reducing polymer concentrations in the organic phase from 20 to 5 mg/mL generally resulted in smaller NC sizes and distributions (monodispersed), with PLGA-NCs consistently exhibiting smaller dimensions. Under these specific conditions, Rhodamine B (Rhod) and gold (Au) were successfully loaded, achieving encapsulation efficiencies exceeding 50 %. Electron microscopy analysis confirmed that the nanocarriers exhibited a consistent spherical shape with smooth surface morphology. X-ray energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDX) revealed a uniform distribution of gold within the polymer matrix. PLA-NCs were effectively internalized by various cell types, including human Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells (PBMCs), HT-29 colon cancer cells, and C6 glioma cells. Uptake occurred in a dose-dependent manner for PLA-NCs sized at 260 ± 51 nm, with only 30 % internalization at 2 mg/mL concentration after 24 to 48 h. Notably, smaller PLA-NCs with a mean size of 170 ± 64 nm achieved nearly 100 % uptake across all tested cell types after 48 h, indicating that particle size significantly influenced cellular uptake., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest The authors declare that they have no known competing financial interests or personal relationships that could have appeared to influence the work reported in this paper., (Copyright © 2024. A new nanodevice based on gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) capped with poly(diethylvinylphosphonate) (PDEVP) has been synthesized, showing interesting photophysical and thermoresponsive properties. The synthesis involves a properly designed Yttriocene catalyst coordinating the vinyl-lutidine (VL) initiator active in diethyl vinyl phosphonate polymerization. The unsaturated PDEVP chain ending was thioacetylated, deacetylated, and reacted with tetrachloroauric acid and sodium borohydride to form PDEVP-VL-capped AuNPs. The NMR, UV-Vis, and ESI-MS characterization of the metal nanoparticles confirmed the formation of the synthetic intermediates and the expected colloidal systems. AuNPs of subnanometric size were determined by WAXD and UV-Vis analysis. UV-Vis and fluorescence analysis confirmed the effective anchoring of the thiolated PDEVP to AuNPs. The formation of 50-200 nm globular structures was assessed by SEM and AFM microscopy in solid state and confirmed by DLS in aqueous dispersion. Hydrodynamic radius studies showed colloidal contraction with temperature, demonstrating thermoresponsive behavior. These properties suggest potential biomedical applications for the photoablation of malignant cells or controlled drug delivery induced by light or heat for the novel PDEVP-capped AuNP systems.

Increasing potassium intake ameliorates blood pressure (BP) and cardiovascular (CV) prognoses in the general population; therefore the World Health Organization recommends a high-potassium diet (90-120 mEq/day). Hyperkalaemia is a rare condition in healthy individuals due to the ability of the kidneys to effectively excrete dietary potassium load in urine, while an increase in serum K + is prevalent in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Hyperkalaemia prevalence increases in more advanced CKD stages, and is associated with a poor prognosis. This scenario generates controversy on the correct nutritional approach to hyperkalaemia in CKD patients, considering the unproven link between potassium intake and serum K + levels. Another concern is that drug-induced hyperkalaemia leads to the down-titration or withdrawal of renin-angiotensin system inhibitors (RASI) and mineralocorticoids receptors antagonists (MRA) in patients with CKD, depriving these patients of central therapeutic interventions aimed at delaying CKD progression and decreasing CV mortality. The new K + -binder drugs (Patiromer and Sodium-Zirconium Cyclosilicate) have proven to be adequate and safe therapeutic options to control serum K + in CKD patients, enabling RASI and MRA therapy, and possibly, a more liberal intake of fruit and vegetables.

There is a growing interest in a potential use of essential oils (EOs) as a replacement for traditional pesticides and herbicides. The aims of this study were to: (i) Identify the chemical composition of the two EOs derived from Origanum heracleoticum L. and O. majorana L., (ii) evaluate the in vitro antifungal activity of the EOs against some postharvest phytopathogens ( Botrytis cinerea , Penicillium expansum , Aspergillus niger and Monilinia fructicola ), (iii) evaluate the in vitro antibacterial activity against Bacillus megaterium , Clavibacter michiganensis , Xanthomonas campestris , Pseudomonas fluorescens and P. syringae pv. phaseolicola , (iv) evaluate the effect of both studied EOs on the spore germination percentage and their minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) against M. fructicola , and (v) study the possible phytotoxicity of the two EOs and their major constituents, carvacrol for O. heracleoticum and terpinen-4-ol for O. majorana , against tha germination and initial radicle growth of radish, lettuce, garden cress and tomato. The two EOs demonstrated promising in vitro antimicrobial and antifungal activities against all tested microorganisms. EOs showed high inhibition of spore germination percentage at the minimal inhibitory concentration of 500 and 2000 µg/mL, respectively. Moreover, both germination and radical elongation of selected plant species were sensitive to the oils.

The chemical composition of the essential oil of Helichrysum italicum (Roth) Don ssp. italicum, collected in the National Park of Cilento and Diano Valley, Southern Italy, was studied by means of GC and GC/MS. Forty four compounds of 45 constituents were identified in the oil, mainly oxygenated sesquiterpenes. The essential oil was evaluated for its potential in vitro phytotoxic activity against germination and early radicle elongation of radish and garden cress. The radicle elongation of radish was significantly inhibited at the highest doses tested, while germination of both seeds was not affected.
