Abstract

The SIDDHARTA-2 collaboration aims to measure for the first time the shift and width induced on the $1s$ level of kaonic deuterium by the strong interaction. In the preliminary phase to the experiment, a test run using a Helium-4 target was performed to optimize the performance of the full experimental apparatus. This preliminary study highlighted the possibility to measure transition lines coming from intermediate mass kaonic atoms, such as kaonic carbon and kaonic aluminum. In order to measure transitions where strong interaction is manifesting at higher energies, out of the energy range of the SIDDHARTA-2 apparatus, the collaboration is testing a new detector system which exploits a novel compound semiconductor, the Cadmium Zinc Telluride. Abstract

The SIDDHARTA-2 collaboration built a new cadmium-zinc-telluride (CZT, CdZnTe)-based X-ray detection system, used for the first time in the DA$\Phi$NE electron-positron collider at INFN-LNF. The aim of this work is to show that these detectors present optimal long- and short-term linearity and stability to perform precise spectroscopic measurements in a collider environment. The spectra used as references for calibration are reported, and the results about the linearity and stability studies are presented. It is also discussed and showed what is the proper function to describe all the effects that alter the Gaussian shape in semiconductors, particularly evident in the CZT case. Good residuals and resolutions were obtained for all the calibrations. In a test run with the source and the collider beam on, it was demonstrated that the calibrations made with beam off are optimal also when the beam is on, and the actual systematics in a physics run were estimated. These promising results show the potentialities of this detector in the high rate environment of a particle collider, and pave the way for the use of CZT detectors in kaonic atoms researches and in accelerators, with applications for particle and nuclear physics., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables

Abstract

The AMADEUS Collaboration aims to provide unique experimental constraints to the antikaon-nucleon strong interaction in the regime of nonperturbative QCD. The K− nuclear captures, both at-rest and in-flight, are studied using the monochromatic low-momentum kaon beam (pK ∼ 120 MeV/c) produced at the DAΦNE collider, interacting with the KLOE detector materials. The studies are performed by reconstructing the hyperon-pion and hyperonnucleon final states. In this work a brief description of AMADEUS results for Λπ− and Λp final states is presented.

Abstract

Recent heavy-ion collision experiments reported a surprisingly short lifetime for the hypertriton, which has been recognized as the hypertriton lifetime puzzle. Our J-PARC E73 experiment contributes to solve this puzzle with an independent experimental method by employing 3He(K−, π0) 3ΛH reaction. In this contribution, we will demonstrate our capability to provide 3ΛH binding energy information by deriving the production cross section ratio, σ3ΛH/σ4ΛH. The production cross section data for 3ΛH and 4ΛH are already available as the pilot run of E73 experiment and data analysis is in progress.

Abstract

The AMADEUS collaboration is investigating the low-energy antikaon interactions with nucleons and nuclei, taking advantage of the lowmomentum antikaons beam provided by the DAΦNE collider at LNF-INFN. In this work a novel technique is outlined for the measurement of the hyperonnucleon two and three body scattering cross sections. The method consists in producing hyperons by antikaons atomic captures in light nuclear targets, and extrapolating the cross sections from the measurement of the yields of the corresponding elastic final state interactions of the hyperons. The feasibility of this kind of analyses is shown by comparison of calculated Σ0 production in 4He by K− absorption on three nucleons, with a sample of K−12C absorption measured by AMADEUS in collaboration with KLOE. The feasibility of a dedicated high statistics measurement is discussed.

Abstract

The aim of the AMADEUS experiment is to investigate the lowenergy antikaon interaction with nucleons and nuclei, exploiting the unique lowmomentum beam of kaons produced by the DAΦNE collider at LNF-INFN, to constrain hadronic nuclear physics models in the strangeness -1 sector. As a first step the data collected in 2004/2005 by the KLOE collaboration, consisting in a complex of K− absorptions in H, 4He, 9Be and 12C, was analyzed, leading to the first invariant mass spectroscopic study with very low momentum (about 100 MeV) in-flight K− captures. A dedicated pure Carbon target was also implemented in the central region of the KLOE detector, providing a high statistic reference sample of pure at-rest K− nuclear interaction. The first measurement of the non-resonant transition amplitude $\left| {{T_{{K^ - }n \to \Lambda {\pi ^ - }}}} \right|$| TK−n→Λπ− | at $\sqrt s = 33$s=33 MeV below the ${\text{\bar KN}}$K¯N threshold is presented, in relation with the Λ(1405) properties studies.

Abstract

The possible existence of deeply-bound $\bar K$K¯-nuclear bound states, kaonic nuclei, has been widely discussed as products of the strongly attractive $\bar K$K¯N interaction in I = 0 channels. Investigations of those exotic states will provide us unique information of the $\bar K$K¯N interaction below the threshold, which is still not fully understood so far. Recently, we observed the simplest kaonic nuclei, $\bar K$K¯NN, having a much deeper binding energy than normal nuclei via inflight (K−, N) reactions at the J-PARC E15 experiment. For further studies, we have proposed a series of experimental programs for the systematic investigation of light kaonic nuclei, from $\bar K$K¯N (Λ(1405)) to $\bar K$K¯NNNN. We will measure the $\bar K$K¯NNN (A = 3) system at the new experiment approved as J-PARC E80, as a first step toward a comprehensive study.

Abstract

VIP-2 (VIolation of Pauli exclusion principle - 2) is an underground experiment sited in the underground “Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso.” It aims to investigate possible violations of the Pauli Exclusion Principle (PEP) and, in this context, Quantum Gravity models implying violations of PEP. While an upper limit of PEP violation probability is recently published, the data requires further developments of accurate analysis techniques and methods. In this contribution, we present an overview of the methodologies proposed for current and planned analysis.

Abstract

The X-ray spectroscopy measurements of light kaonic atoms’ deexcitation towards the fundamental level provide unique information on the low-energy Quantum ChromoDynamics (QCD) in the strangeness sector, being a direct probe of the kaon/nucleon interaction at threshold, unobtainable through the scattering experiments. In this framework, the SIDDHARTA-2 collaboration is going to perform the first kaonic deuterium 2p → 1s transition measurement at the DAΦNE collider of Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare – Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati. Combining this measurement with the kaonic hydrogen one performed by SIDDHARTA in 2009 it will be possible to obtain, in a model-independent way, the isospin-dependent antikaon-nucleon scattering lengths. The paper introduces the SIDDHARTA-2 setup, an upgraded version with respect to the one used for the kaonic hydrogen measurement, dedicated to the ambitious kaonic deuterium measurement, together with the preliminary results obtained during the kaonic helium run, preparatory for the SIDDHARTA-2 data taking campaign.

10. Detecting Iron Oxidation States in Liquids with the VOXES Bragg Spectrometer

Abstract

Determining the oxidation states of metals assumes great importance in various applications because a variation in the oxidation number can drastically influence the material properties. As an example, this becomes evident in edible liquids like wine and oil, where a change in the oxidation states of the contained metals can significantly modify both the overall quality and taste. To this end, here we present the MITIQO project, which aims to identify oxidation states of metals in edible liquids utilizing X-ray emission with Bragg spectroscopy. This is achieved using the VOXES crystal spectrometer, developed at INFN National Laboratories of Frascati (LNF), employing mosaic crystal (HAPG) in the Von Hamos configuration. This combination allow us to work with effective source sizes of up to a few millimeters and improves the typical low efficiency of Bragg spectroscopy, a crucial aspect when studying liquids with low metal concentration. Here we showcase the concept behind MITIQO, for a liquid solution containing oxidized iron. We performed several high-resolution emission spectra measurements, for the liquid and for different powdered samples containing oxidized and pure iron. By looking at the spectral features of the iron's K$\beta$ emission lineshape, we were able to obtain, for a liquid, a result consistent with the oxidized iron powders and successfully quantifying the effect of oxidation.

Abstract

Biophotons are an ultra-weak emission of photons in the visible energy range from living matter. In this work, we study the emission from germinating seeds using an experimental technique designed to detect light of extremely small intensity. The emission from lentil seeds and single bean was analyzed during the whole germination process in terms of both the different spectral components through low pass filters and the different count distributions in the various stages of the germination process. Although the shape of the emission spectrum appears to be very similar in the two samples used in our experiment, our analysis is able to highlight the differences present in the two cases. Abstract

Pauli Exclusion Principle (PEP) violations induced by space-time non-commutativity, a class of universality for several models of Quantum Gravity, are investigated by the VIP-2 Lead experiment at the Gran Sasso underground National Laboratory of INFN. The VIP-2 Lead experimental bound on the non-commutative space-time scale $\Lambda$ excludes $\theta$-Poincar\'e far above the Planck scale for non vanishing ``electric-like" components of $\theta_{\mu \nu}$, and up to $6.9 \cdot 10^{-2}$ Planck scales if they are null. Therefore, this new bound represents the tightest one so far provided by atomic transitions tests. Abstract

We report the first simultaneous and independent measurements of the K$^{-}$p $\rightarrow \Sigma^0 \, \pi^{0}$ and K$^{-}$p $\rightarrow \Lambda \, \pi^{0}$ cross sections around 100 MeV/c kaon momentum. The kaon beam delivered by the DA$\Phi$NE collider was exploited to detect K$^-$ absorptions on Hydrogen atoms, populating the gas mixture of the KLOE drift chamber. The precision of the measurements ($\sigma_{K^- p \rightarrow \Sigma^0 \pi^0} = 42.8 \pm 1.5 (stat.) ^{+2.4}_{-2.0}(syst.) \ \mathrm{mb}$ and $\sigma_{K^- p \rightarrow \Lambda \pi^0} = 31.0 \pm 0.5 (stat.) ^{+1.2}_{-1.2}(syst.) \ \mathrm{mb}\,$) is the highest yet obtained in the low kaon momentum regime.

Investigations of possible violations of the Pauli Exclusion Principle represent critical tests of the microscopic space-time structure and properties. Space-time non-commutativity provides a class of universality for several Quantum Gravity models. 15. VIP-2 with modulated current: pathfinder for enhanced Pauli exclusion principle violation studies

Abstract

A large-area Silicon Drift Detectors (SDDs) system has been developed by the SIDDHARTA2 collaboration for high precision light kaonic atoms X-ray spectroscopy at the DA{\Phi}NE collider of Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare - Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati. The SDDs geometry and electric field configuration, combined with their read-out electronics, make these devices suitable to perform high precision light kaonic atoms spectroscopy measurements in the high background of the DA{\Phi}NE collider. Abstract

The Pauli exclusion principle (PEP), a cornerstone of quantum mechanics and whole science, states that in a system, two fermions can not simultaneously occupy the same quantum state. Several experimental tests have been performed to place increasingly stringent bounds on the validity of PEP. Among these, the series of VIP experiments, performed at the Gran Sasso Underground National Laboratory of INFN, is searching for PEP-violating atomic X-ray transitions in copper. In this paper, the upgraded VIP-3 setup is described, designed to extend these investigations to higher-Z elements such as zirconium, silver, palladium, and tin. We detail the enhanced design of this setup, including the implementation of cutting-edge, 1 mm thick, silicon drift detectors, which significantly improve the measurement sensitivity at higher energies. Additionally, we present calculations of expected PEP-violating energy shifts in the characteristic lines of these elements, performed using the multi-configurational Dirac–Fock method from first principles. Abstract

The low-energy strong interaction of antikaons (K-) with nuclei has many facets and rep- resents a lively and challenging research field. It is interconnected to the peculiar role of strangeness, since the strange quark is rather light, but still much heavier than the up and down quarks. Thus, when strangeness is involved one has to deal with spontaneous and explicit symmetry breaking in QCD. It is well known that the antikaon interaction with nucleons is attractive, but how strong ? Is the interaction strong enough to bind nucleons to form kaonic nuclei and, if so, what are the properties (binding energy, decay width)? There are controversial indications for such bound states and new results are expected to come soon. The existence of antikaon mediated bound states might have important consequences since it would open the possibility for the formation of cold baryonic matter of high density which might have a severe impact in astrophysics for the understanding of the composi- tion of compact (neutron) stars. New experimental opportunities could be provided by the AMADEUS experiment at the DA?NE electron-positron collider at LNF-INFN (Frascati, Italy). Pre-AMADEUS studies on the antikaon interaction with nuclei are carried out by analysis of data collected by KLOE in till 2005 and in special data runs using a carbon target insert. Studies for the dedicated AMADEUS detector setup taking advantage of the low-energy antikaons from Phi-meson decay delivered by DAFNE are in progress. Abstract

An experiment to search for the $K^-pp$ bound state was performed via the in-flight $^3$He($K^-,n)$ reaction using 5.3 $\times$ $10^9$ kaons at 1 GeV/$c$ at the J-PARC hadron experimental facility. In the semi-inclusive neutron missing-mass spectrum at $\theta_{n}^{lab}=0^\circ$, no significant peak was observed in the region corresponding to $K^-pp$ binding energy larger than 80 MeV, where a bump structure has been reported in the $\Lambda p$ final state in different reactions. Assuming the state to be isotropically decaying into $\Lambda p$, mass-dependent upper limits on the production cross section were determined to be 30--180, 70--250, and 100--270 $\mu$b/sr, for the natural widths of 20, 60, and 100 MeV, respectively, at 95\% confidence level., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

A new spectrometer system was designed and constructed at the secondary beam line K1.8BR in the hadron hall of J-PARC to investigate $\bar K N$ interactions and $\bar K$-nuclear bound systems. The spectrometer consists of a high precision beam line spectrometer, a liquid $^3$He/$^4$He/D$_2$ target system, a Cylindrical Detector System that surrounds the target to detect the decay particles from the target region, and a neutron time-of-flight counter array located $\sim$15 m downstream from the target position. Abstract

Utilizing a dispersive crystal for X-ray Emission Spectroscopy (XES) significantly enhances the energy resolution when compared with spectroscopy performed with just silicon drift detectors. This high resolution is particularly valuable for studying metals, as it offers essential insights into their electronic structures and chemical environments. Conducting such experiments in the laboratory, as opposed to synchrotron light sources, presents challenges due to the reduced intensities of X-ray tubes and, consequently, low signal rates, with the effect of increasing the acquisition time. In this study, we demonstrate that XES spectra can be acquired within a few hours for a CuNiZn metallic sample alloy while still maintaining a good energy resolution and a large dynamic range. This is achieved with the VOXES spectrometer, developed at INFN National Laboratories of Frascati (LNF), along with a background reduction procedure that enhances the signal from emission lines under study. Abstract

Since their discovery in 1895, the detection of X-rays has had a strong impact on and various applications in several fields of science and human life. Impressive efforts have been made to develop new types of detectors and new techniques, aiming to obtain higher precision both in terms of energy and position. Depending on the applications, solid state detectors, microcalorimeters, and various types of spectrometers currently serve as the best options for spectroscopic and imaging detectors. Recent advancements in micron and meV precision have opened the door for groundbreaking applications in fundamental physics, medical science, astrophysics, cultural heritage, and several other fields. The aim of this Special Issue is to compile an overview, from different communities and research fields, of the most recent developments in X-ray detection and their possible impacts in various sectors, such as in exotic atom measurements, quantum physics studies, XRF, XES, EXAFS, plasma emission spectroscopy, monochromators, synchrotron radiation, telescopes, and space engineering. All the papers included in this Special Issue contribute to emphasizing the importance of X-ray detection in a very broad range of physics topics; most of these topics are covered by the published works, and several others are mentioned in the paper references, providing an interesting and very useful synopsis, from a variety of different communities and research fields, of the most recent developments in X-ray detection and their impact in fundamental research and societal applications.

Abstract

The AMADEUS Collaboration aims to provide unique experimental constraints to the antikaon-nucleon strong interaction in the regime of nonperturbative QCD. The K− nuclear captures, both at-rest and in-flight, are studied using the monochromatic low-momentum kaon beam (pK ∼ 120 MeV/c) produced at the DAΦNE collider, interacting with the KLOE detector materials. The studies are performed by reconstructing the hyperon-pion and hyperonnucleon final states. In this work a brief description of AMADEUS results for Λπ− and Λp final states is presented.
