Abstract

In response to calls for public engagement on human genome editing (HGE), which intensified after the 2018 He Jiankui scandal that resulted in the implantation of genetically modified embryos, we detail an anticipatory approach to the governance of HGE. By soliciting multidisciplinary experts input on the drivers and uncertainties of HGE development, we developed a set of plausible future scenarios to ascertain publics values-specifically, their hopes and concerns regarding the novel technology and its applications. In turn, we gathered a subset of multidisciplinary experts to propose governance recommendations for HGE that incorporate identified publics values. These recommendations include: (1) continued participatory public engagement; (2) international harmonization and transparency of multiple governance levers such as professional and scientific societies, funders, and regulators; and (3) development of a formal whistleblower framework.

Abstract

Background Cerebral small vessel disease is associated with higher ratios of soluble-epoxide hydrolase derived linoleic acid diols (12,13-dihydroxyoctadecenoic acid [DiHOME] and 9,10-DiHOME) to their parent epoxides (12(13)-epoxyoctadecenoic acid [EpOME] and 9(10)-EpOME); however, the relationship has not yet been examined in stroke. Methods and Results Participants with mild to moderate small vessel stroke or large vessel stroke were selected based on clinical and imaging criteria. Metabolites were quantified by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Volumes of stroke, lacunes, white matter hyperintensities, magnetic resonance imaging visible perivascular spaces, and free water diffusion were quantified from structural and diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (3 Tesla). Adjusted linear regression models were used for analysis. Compared with participants with large vessel stroke (n=30), participants with small vessel stroke (n=50) had a higher 12,13-DiHOME/12(13)-EpOME ratio (β=0.251, P=0.023). The 12,13-DiHOME/12(13)-EpOME ratio was associated with more lacunes (β=0.266, P=0.028) but not with large vessel stroke volumes. Ratios of 12,13-DiHOME/12(13)-EpOME and 9,10-DiHOME/9(10)-EpOME were associated with greater volumes of white matter hyperintensities (β=0.364, P

47. Player experience in the academy to first team transition in professional football

Abstract

The thesis explores player experience during the junior-to-senior transition. A literature review, scoping review (under review), two empirical studies (published), a general discussion, and applied applications of the research comprise the thesis. The scoping review allowed us to explore the breadth of junior-to-senior transitions research in order to identify any and all gaps in the literature. Study one explores the evolving perspectives of young players' experiences going through the junior to senior transition in professional football. Using novel methods, namely video diaries, we were able to gain a rich understanding of the experience of transition players. Unique findings included contract decisions; adaptation to senior competition; barriers to transition without early success; and social aspects of the transition. Moreover, the weekly approach to data collection and analysis allowed a clear progression of the experience to be documented. Study two explored the junior-to-senior transition from professional contract to an established first-team player in an English men's professional football team. Using multiple interviews with each participant four unique contributions to the literature are discussed: the central role of opportunity in career progression; the presence of a "gray period"; difficulties in seeking support from coaches; and contracts' influence across the transition. The thesis includes a discussion of the overall findings and future research directions. The final chapter provides my experiences of working with athletes in transition to professional football.

Abstract

In this study, we automate quantitative mammographic breast density estimation with neural networks and show that this tool is a strong use case for federated learning on multi-institutional datasets. Our dataset included bilateral CC-view and MLO-view mammographic images from two separate institutions. Two U-Nets were separately trained on algorithm-generated labels to perform segmentation of the breast and dense tissue from these images and subsequently calculate breast percent density (PD). The networks were trained with federated learning and compared to three non-federated baselines, one trained on each single-institution dataset and one trained on the aggregated multi-institution dataset. We demonstrate that training on multi-institution datasets is critical to algorithm generalizability. We further show that federated learning on multi-institutional datasets improves model generalization to unseen data at nearly the same level as centralized training on multi-institutional datasets, indicating that federated learning can be applied to our method to improve algorithm generalizability while maintaining patient privacy., Comment: Deep learning, federated learning, mammography, breast density, risk assessment

50. Finding Flow: Unpacking the Capacity of In-Lecture Question Activities to Engage Online Students

Abstract

Maintaining student engagement in online and recorded lectures is a challenging aspect of higher education. In light of this, active learning through in-lecture question activities was investigated using a pre-teaching focus group (n = 12) and student evaluations (n = 43) after an in-class trial. Data analysis was underpinned by flow theory, which can explain student engagement and immersion with content and activities. The key findings included: (1) students' preference for familiar technology platforms; (2) students desired more engagement in their lectures both internally and online; and (3) in-lecture questions had to be matched with quality content to ensure the highest chance of flow and student engagement. Thematic analysis suggested engagement may have been related to key aspects of flow such as immediate feedback, and matching challenges to skill levels. Overall, learning designers and educational technologists should be used to ensure in-lecture question activity introductions work within current institutional platforms and pedagogies such as active learning.
