Abstract

Motivated by previous work on kinetic energy cascades in the ocean and atmosphere, we develop a spatio-temporal spectral transfer tool that can be used to study scales of variability in generalized dynamical systems. In particular, we use generalized time-frequency methods from signal analysis to broaden the applicability of frequency transfers from theoretical to practical applications such as the study of ocean or atmosphere data or simulation output. We also show that triad interactions in wavenumber used to study kinetic energy and enstrophy cascades can be generalized to study triad interactions in frequency or wavenumber-frequency. We study the effects of sweeping on the locality of frequency transfers and frequency triad interactions to better understand the locality of spatio-temporal frequency transfers. As an illustrative example, we use the spatio-temporal spectral transfer tool to study the results of a simulation of two-dimensional homogeneous isotropic turbulence. This simulated fluid is forced at a well-defined wavenumber and frequency with dissipation occurring at both large and small scales, making this one of the first studies of "modulated turbulence" in two dimensions. Our results show that the spatio-temporal transfers we develop in this paper are robust to potential practical problems such as low sampling rates or nonstationarity in time series of interest. We anticipate that this method will be a useful tool in studying scales of spatio-temporal variability in a wide range of fluids applications as higher resolution data and simulations become more widely available., Comment: 30 pages, 11 figures, 1 table. Abstract

Peace and human rights serve as a check on the dominant or majoritarian culture. An absence of human rights is conducive to weak democratic forms, unequal social and political relations, marginalisation, oppression and, in some cases, criminalisation of communities. Such a scenario can be found in Sri Lanka. This paper expands upon a principal research project which found that the marginalisation of participants arose from aspects of their particular identities, including diverse sexualities and genders, races, ethnicities, religions and youth. The principal research was informed by intersectionality, social interactionism, interviews and interpretative phenomenological analysis. This paper was composed out of the research results and was further structured by literature review. People’s marginalisation, oppression and exclusion are related directly to the absence of peace and human rights manifested through injustices and structural barriers that frustrated social and political participation.

39. Perceptions of Educators on Effective Culturally & Linguistically Responsive (CLR) Practices

Abstract

For more than three decades, researchers have examined strategies to teach students who are culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD). For the purpose of this article, students who are CLD are those whose ethnic, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds, including English language learners and English speakers of other languages, differ from mainstream culture. The purpose of this study was to examine the perceptions of educators regarding effective culturally and linguistically responsive (CLR) practices they currently use in their classrooms to assist students who are CLD in attaining greater academic success. Eight teachers of students who are CLD from public schools in the midwestern U.S. were chosen by convenience sampling to participate in this study. The data gathered from participants of this study as well as from the literature show that teachers must take personal responsibility in becoming effective at executing CLR practices by developing positive character traits and by engaging in deliberate reflective activities. In addition, teacher preparation programs (i.e., institutional dimension) may help educators become literate in working with CLD populations by explicitly incorporating CLR practices into curricula (Li, 2013).

Abstract

This dissertation defines, analyses, and puts into practice a theory of speculative reading as developed from the work of G. W. F. Hegel, and assesses its importance for literary theory. Hegel's relation to literary theory is seemingly paradoxical. One the one hand, 'theory' often names that which has established itself against figures like Hegel and all that he ostensibly stood for: the imperium of reason, systematicity, 'absolute idealism,' and the end of art. And yet, this opposition notwithstanding, it is frequently claimed that literary theory cannot escape Hegel, and rests upon a number of concepts and ways of thinking that were prefigured by him. The Spirit and the Letter of Hegel seeks to complicate this debate, first by claiming that Hegel's influence on literary theory can only be registered in the way in which the latter has made use of certain concepts or arguments as abstracted from their more dynamic presentation in Hegel's writings. It also argues, however, that by reading Hegel 'speculatively'-that is, by being alive to the experience of the content as it progressively (and sometimes regressively) unfolds-Hegel's phenomenology yields a literary theory, and more specifically, a theory and practice of reading. This argument will be conducted across three main chapters and one extended concluding chapter, organised conceptually around four essential yet overlooked modalities of Hegel's dialectic: irony, recollection, 'the spirit and the letter', and critique. Through close engagement with the work of Hegel and a range of his readers (from Theodor Adorno, to Gillian Rose, and Robert Brandom) these chapters explore what Hegelian speculative reading might reveal about the relationships between text and meaning, the role of the critic, and the critical work that literature itself might be capable of. In particular, it seeks to cut through current debates concerning 'the limits of critique' in literary studies. In recent years, the theory and practice of critique has been increasingly cast into doubt as a mode of interpretation, and questioned concerning its political and ethical efficacy. Principally, it has been accused of being overly detached and methodological, tending to diagnose the text's disavowed symptoms at expense of the text itself. I will argue, however, that Hegel provides a model of speculative reading which is critical without succumbing to methodologism or pretensions of mastery and detachment; and one which prioritises the reading experience without succumbing to the implicit subjectivism of the so-called 'postcritical'.

Abstract

We assembled an ancestrally diverse collection of genome-wide association studies (GWAS) of type 2 diabetes (T2D) in 180,834 affected individuals and 1,159,055 controls (48.9% non-European descent) through the Diabetes Meta-Analysis of Trans-Ethnic association studies (DIAMANTE) Consortium. Multi-ancestry GWAS meta-analysis identified 237 loci attaining stringent genome-wide significance (P 50% posterior probability. This improved fine-mapping enabled systematic assessment of candidate causal genes and molecular mechanisms through which T2D associations are mediated, laying the foundations for functional investigations. Multi-ancestry genetic risk scores enhanced transferability of T2D prediction across diverse populations. Our study provides a step toward more effective clinical translation of T2D GWAS to improve global health for all, irrespective of genetic background.
