Abstract

Mixed reality refers to the integration of virtual reality into the real-world environment. This digital content can be interacted with in real time. The emergence of mixed reality technology has been made possible by the introduction of head-mounted displays, which are being utilized across multiple surgical specialties. In upper extremity surgery, mixed reality has widespread applications in trauma, corrective surgery, arthroplasty, arthroscopy, and oncology. Preoperatively, mixed reality allows for complex 3D planning. Intraoperatively, surgeons can access this 3D data in a sterile environment. While in its infant stages, mixed reality is likely to become a powerful tool for intraoperative guidance and navigation. Mixed reality can change the paradigm of communication, as it allows the sharing of visual data from the surgeon’s perspective, enabling remote assistance and participation.

Abstract

The Morris Water Maze (MWM) is the most commonly used assay for evaluating learning and memory in laboratory mice. Despite its widespread use, contemporary reviews have highlighted substantial methodological variation in experimental protocols and that the associated testing procedures are acutely (each trial) and chronically (testing across days) stressful; stress impairs attention, memory consolidation and the retrieval of learned information. Moreover, the interpretation of behavior within the MWM is often difficult because of wall hugging, non-spatial swim strategies, floating, and jumping off the escape platform. Together, these issues may compromise the reproducibility, generalizability, and predictability of experimental results, as well as animal welfare. To address these issues, and as an initial proof-of-principle, we first narrowed the spatial dimensions of the MWM by using a T-insert, which constrained and reduced the overall length of time/distance that the animal must swim in order to navigate to the escape platform, thus reducing stress and off-task behavior. Given the robust performance observed across spatial acquisition (learning and memory) as well as during reversal learning (executive function), we further reduced (by 43%) the overall distance and time that the animal must swim in order to find the escape platform in a bespoke standalone Water T-Maze (WTM). We show, across five experiments, procedural refinements to our protocol and demonstrate robust, reliable and reproducible indicators of learning, memory and executive functioning in a task that is also significantly more efficient (3 days of testing within the WTM vs. 11 days of testing within the MWM). Taken together, our WTM apparatus and protocol are a significant improvement over other water-based apparatuses and protocols for evaluating learning, memory, and executive functioning in laboratory mice.

4. Orbit of a Possible Planet X

Abstract

The plausibility of an unseen planet in the outer solar system, and the expected orbit and mass of such a planet, have long been a topic of inquiry and debate. We calculate the long-term orbital stability of distant trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs), which allows us to expand the sample of objects that would carry dynamical information about a hypothetical unseen planet in the solar system. Using this expanded sample, we find statistically significant clustering at the ∼3 σ level for TNOs with semimajor axes > 170 au in the longitude of perihelion ( ϖ ), but not in inclination ( i ), argument of perihelion ( ω ), or longitude of node (Ω). Since a natural explanation for clustering in ϖ is an unseen planet, we run 300 N -body simulations with the giant planets, a disk of test particles representing Kuiper Belt objects, and an additional planet with varied initial conditions for its mass, semimajor axis, eccentricity, and inclination. Based on the distribution of test particles after 1–2 Gyr, we compute relative likelihoods given the actual distribution of ϖ as a function of semimajor axis for distant TNOs on stable orbits using a significantly larger sample than previous work. We find the best-fit unseen planet parameters to have mass m _p = 4.4 ± 1.1 M _⊕ , semimajor axis a _p = 290 ± 30 au, eccentricity e _p = 0.29 ± 0.13, and inclination i _p = 6 $\mathop{.}\limits^{\unicode{x000b0}}$ 8 ± 5 $\mathop{.}\limits^{\unicode{x000b0}}$ 0. Only 0.06% of the M. E. Brown & K. Batygin Planet Nine reference population produce probabilities within 1 σ of the maximum within our quadrivariate model, indicating that our work identifies a distinct preferred region of parameter space for an unseen planet in the solar system.

Abstract We previously observed lifelong endurance exercise (LLE) influenced quadriceps whole‐muscle and myofiber size in a fiber‐type and sex‐specific manner. The current follow‐up exploratory investigation examined myofiber size regulators and myofiber size distribution in vastus lateralis biopsies from these same LLE men (n = 21, 74 ± 1 years) and women (n = 7, 72 ± 2 years) as well as old, healthy nonexercisers (OH; men: n = 10, 75 ± 1 years; women: n = 10, 75 ± 1 years) and young exercisers (YE; men: n = 10, 25 ± 1 years; women: n = 10, 25 ± 1 years). LLE exercised ~5 days/week, ~7 h/week for the previous 52 ± 1 years. Slow (myosin heavy chain (MHC) I) and fast (MHC IIa) myofiber nuclei/fiber, myonuclear domain, satellite cells/fiber, and satellite cell density were not influenced (p > 0.05) by LLE in men and women. Abstract

Modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND), which postulates a breakdown of Newton's laws of gravity/dynamics below some critical acceleration threshold, can explain many otherwise puzzling observational phenomena on galactic scales. MOND competes with the hypothesis of dark matter, which successfully explains the cosmic microwave background and large-scale structure. Here we provide the first solar system test of MOND that probes the subcritical acceleration regime. Using the Bekenstein–Milgrom “aquadratic Lagrangian” (or AQUAL) formulation, we simulate the evolution of myriads of test particles (planetesimals or comets) born in the trans-Neptunian region and scattered by the giant planets over the lifetime of the Sun to heliocentric distances of 10 ^2 –10 ^5 au. We include the effects of the Galactic tidal field and passing stars. While Newtonian simulations reproduce the distribution of binding energies of long-period and Oort-cloud comets detectable from Earth, MOND-based simulations do not. This conclusion is robust to plausible changes in the migration history of the planets, the migration history of the Sun, the MOND transition function, effects of the Sun's birth cluster, and the fading properties of long-period comets. For the most popular version of AQUAL, characterized by a gradual transition between the Newtonian and MOND regimes, our MOND-based simulations also fail to reproduce the orbital distribution of trans-Neptunian objects in the detached disk (perihelion q > 38 au). Our results do not rule out some MOND theories more elaborate than AQUAL, in which non-Newtonian effects are screened on small spatial scales, at small masses, or in external gravitational fields comparable in strength to the critical acceleration.

Abstract

Using the equations of motion from Hill’s problem, with added accelerations for different forms of dynamical friction, we provide the (to-date) broadest scale-free study of friction-driven binary formation in gaseous disks and stellar clusters. We focus mainly on binary formation between stellar-mass black holes in active galactic nuclei (AGNs), considering both gas dynamical friction (GDF) from AGN disks and stellar dynamical friction (SDF) from the nuclear star cluster. We first find simple, dimensionless friction coefficients that approximate the effects of standard models for GDF and SDF. We perform extensive simulations of Hill’s problem under such friction, and we present a picture of binary formation through encounters between single stars on nearby orbits, as a function of friction parameter, eccentricity, and inclination. Notably, we find that the local binary formation rate is a linear function of the friction coefficient so long as the friction is weak. Due to the dimensionless nature of our model problem, our findings are generalizable to binary formation at all scales (e.g., intermediate-mass black holes in a star cluster, planetesimals in a gaseous disk).

Abstract

We present infrared photometry and Hubble Space Telescope imaging and spectroscopy of the Sab galaxy NGC 4826. Schwarzschild dynamical modeling is used to measure its central black hole mass M . Photometric decomposition is used to enable a comparison of M to published scaling relations between black hole masses and properties of host bulges. This decomposition implies that NGC 4826 contains classical and pseudobulges of approximately equal mass. The classical bulge has best-fit Sérsic index n = 3.27. The pseudobulge is made up of three parts, an inner lens ( n = 0.18 at r ≲ 4″), an outer lens ( n = 0.17 at r ≲ 45″), and a n = 0.58 Sérsic component required to match the surface brightness between the lens components. The total V -band luminosity of the galaxy is M _VT = −21.07, the ratio of classical bulge to total light is B / T ≃ 0.12, and the ratio of pseudobulge to total light is PB / T ≃ 0.13. The outer disk is exponential ( n = 1.07) and makes up D / T = 0.75 of the light of the galaxy. Our best-fit Schwarzschild model has a black hole mass with 1 σ uncertainties of $M={8.4}_{-0.6}^{+1.7}\times {10}^{6}\ {{\rm{M}}}_{\odot }$ and a stellar population with a K -band mass-to-light ratio of ${{\rm{\Upsilon }}}_{K}=0.46\pm 0.03\ {{\rm{M}}}_{\odot }{L}_{\odot }^{-1}$ at the assumed distance of 7.27 Mpc. Our modeling is marginally consistent with M = 0 at the 3 σ limit. These best-fit parameters were calculated assuming the black hole is located where the velocity dispersion is largest; this is offset from the maximum surface brightness, probably because of dust absorption. The black hole mass—one of the smallest measured by modeling stellar dynamics—satisfies the well known correlations of M with the K -band luminosity, stellar mass, and velocity dispersion of the classical bulge only. In contrast, the black hole is undermassive with respect to the correlation of M with total (classical plus pseudo) bulge luminosity. Thus the composite (classical bulge plus pseudobulge) galaxy NGC 4826 is consistent with previous results on black hole scaling relations and helps to strengthen these results at low black hole masses.

Abstract

Abstract Purpose Cancer patients with a history of radiotherapy are at an increased risk of ischemic heart disease. Preclinical animal studies demonstrate markedly impaired acetylcholine (ACh)-mediated endothelium-dependent vasorelaxation within days to weeks post-irradiation, however, whether microvascular function is affected in the intact human circulation during cancer radiation therapy has yet to be determined. Materials and methods Using laser-Doppler flowmetry, microvascular endothelium-dependent and independent responses were evaluated through iontophoresis of acetylcholine (ACh) (part 1, n = 7) and sodium nitroprusside (SNP) (part 2, n = 8), respectively, in women currently receiving unilateral chest adjuvant radiation therapy for breast cancer. Measurements were performed at the site of radiation treatment and at a contralateral control, non-radiated site. Cutaneous vascular conductance (CVC) was calculated by normalizing for mean arterial pressure. Results and Conculsions In part 1, patients received an average radiation dose of 2104 ± 236 cGy. A significantly lower peak ACh-mediated endothelium-dependent vasodilation was observed within the radiated microvasculature when compared to non-radiated (radiated: 532 ± 167%, non-radiated 1029 ± 263%; P = 0.02). In part 2, the average radiation dose received was 2251 ± 196 cGy. Iontophoresis of SNP elicited a similar peak endothelium-independent vasodilator response in radiated and non-radiated tissue (radiated: 179 ± 58%, non-radiated: 310 ± 158; P = 0.2).
